FPL 2022/23: When to best ‘hop on’ players with good fixtures

While home advantage was largely wiped out during the pandemic and empty stadiums, the power of home support kicked back into gear last season.

In 2020/21, away teams won 40% of Premier League matches, compared with 34% in 2021/22.

And while there is no escaping the fact that home advantage generally remains on the wane, for most clubs outside of the elite, targeting wins at the location you know best still makes most sense.

With that in mind, this article aims to identify the teams outside of the traditional ‘big six’ who have the best runs of consecutive, winnable home matches at the start of the season – the types of games managers will be earmarking for three points.

You’ll also notice that we’ve tried to ensure a few reasonable away fixtures are thrown in too, and that all of the runs we highlight start no later than Gameweek 8.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

GAMEWEEK 2-8

Brighton and Hove Albion start next season’s Premier League campaign with a trip to Old Trafford and follow it up with a kind run of fixtures from Gameweeks 2-8. In that time, they face Newcastle United, Leeds United, Leicester City and Crystal Palace at the Amex, whilst also visiting newly-promoted Fulham and Bournemouth.

2021/22 was a season of extremes for Graham Potter’s side, as they went 11 Premier League games without a victory from September to December and then six straight defeats in February and March. However, they finished strongly, taking 18 points from a possible 27 at the end, raising interest in their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assets.

Robert Sanchez ended last season with a creditable 11 clean sheets but wasn’t a prolific save machine. In fact, a total of 14 first-choice Premier League goalkeepers had a better points-per-match average than the Brighton custodian (3.4). There are other appealing options at the back, however, including Marc Cucurella, whose total of 21 bonus points was beaten by just four other defenders, Lewis Dunk and bargain buy Joel Veltman, who racked up 33 Premier League starts. Further forward, the form of Leandro Trossard is also worth noting: the Belgian ended the campaign with four goals and three assists in his final six appearances.

      GC: 25
      xGC: 37.08
      Δ: -12.08
      Alisson xGP: 1.00

So they were expected to concede 12 more goals than they did, and Allison was responsible for preventing just 1 additional goal.

So had the opposition's finishing been of average quality, they would have expected to concede an additional 11 goals.

Stats are maybe doing disservice to Alisson here... do they account for his positioning in one-on-one situations? Few better at closing off the angles at just the right time

        1. Piggs Boson

Oh I agree. He intercepted many dangerous through balls before they even resulted in a shot. He was tremendous last season. But this is looking purely at the shots that did happen, so it doesn't affect my point.

The new model does account for goalkeeper positions and pressure on the ball. https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2022/03/30/changes-to-optas-expected-goals-xg-stats-explained/

Interesting that Liverpool have the 2nd worse XGC delta of 11 but Wolves who are top conceded 43 but XGC was 65! delta of 22..

Puts me off any Wolves defenders…

              • 12 Years

Yeah that was pretty mental. Jose Sa, to his credit, prevented a hefty 8.4 of those goals! The rest was just bad finishing from the opposition.

Under the old xG model, I probably wouldn't give this data much weight, but this new OPTA model is seriously good. I'm treating it with respect.

Liverpool's defence would still be top tier, but more Chelsea level than City level. That might affect whether I double up with TAA and Robbo or not...

I agree, and West Ham's playstyle suits him more imo.

I don't expect him to be as red hot as he was, but a solid FPL player during the right fixtures. Perhaps a bit of a confidence player, might need to watch for body language.

Yes, but I don't expect all the new signings to be on the right. Raphinha and Saka would be the main competitors for that slot, I'd have thought. 2 main competitors for each of the front 4 spots.

Of course, given form, fitness and tactics, players could play anywhere on a given day. But I expect Plan A is about balance and harmony, giving everyone a realistic shot of making an impact.

I don't know if it matters. The starter will play 45-75 mins; the sub will play 15-45 mins when goals are more likely. And neither will be nailed to start. I'd be tempted by either, both or neither Martinelli + ESR.

I strongly disagree. Firstly check his salary and secondly his injury history. Neymar would completely break the wage structure and most likely end up just like Ozil or Aubameyang, if not worse. We seriously don't need another expensive problem that won't go away later, when he decides that he doesn't want to give his all anymore and turns up when he feels like it. We could argue that he's past his prime too. His attitude is far from perfect and we're actually trying to get rid of those who cause drama and issues. I honestly think this deal would be a complete waste of money and he's a luxury player only a few teams can afford.

Sam Johnstone would be with Raya at 4.5m at Palace as set and forget keeper, except for Palace's poor fixture run-in.

It will be interesting to see who goes whether it is Guaita at the age of 35 (with one year left) or Butland at 30 (with one year left)

    SALAHS FUTURE

Currently unhappy with is wages at Liverpool.

Liverpool do not want to lose him for free, so are willing to allow him to leave for a fee of around £60m

    His wage demands are £400+k/week

Salah favours staying in the premier League, surely to the dislike of Liverpool?

I've heard that Real Madrid are monitoring the situation but due to the whole Ramos incident and salahs revenge comments it might not work out.

City are undoubtedly linked although this is presumably highly unlikely due to salah wanting to respect Liverpool.

    Other contenders may be
    1) Chelsea - in the market for a forward, currently pursuing the cheaper option of sterling, the return would be good for newspaper headlines.
    2) PSG - with neymar and di Maria leaving they suddenly have a big hole on the wing, definitely got the money to make it happen
    3) Bayern - link up with Sadio Mane? 🙂
    4) other e.g Barcelona or Juventus - unlikely

Would Salah leaving the PL make FPL easier?

Would he be more/less vital if he left to play for Chelsea or City? Would he still be a shoo-in?

Bayern have a very rigid wage structure, they won't break it for Salah.

agreed, just thought with mane being there it could be an attractive proposal for him.

Bayern don't especially need him and really cant afford him, admittedly

He's left it a bit late in the day to start demanding £400k/wk.

Who wants to shell out £60m up front then £20m/yr thereafter for a 30 year old?

      Only takes one bad tackle.

exactly - probably why Liverpool want him to leave...

Can't imagine Salah would go to another premier League club.

Chelsea are pretty much signed Sterling, City aren't in desperate need of a RW with mahrez Alvarez (foden) and Palmer all more than capable.

Arsenal wouldn't afford it and are chasing raph

Spurs won't be able to afford it and it wouldn't be an attractive proposition for Salah

Likewise with man United he wouldn't want to go there

Maybe only Newcastle if they could justify that spend 😉

Much as I'd love to see that I'm afraid FFP would have a field day with us.

I’d say less vital of he joined City due to the rotation and the fact he would no longer be the main man. More vital (or at least as vital) if he joins Chelsea or Utd. Think he’ll probably end up staying though.

agreed i bet pep would probably start mahrez over him anyway haha.

Chelsea (and maybe Newcastle) are the only other *realistic* options.

I say *realistic* cos Salah won't go to Newcastle and it's unlikely he will sign for chelsea

Arsenal attacking assets ? It's still Saka as the most nailed for this season.

I still believe Martinelli will reach great heights but with regret the breakout FPL wise is likely to be next season.

      Odegaard seems a decent option

Picking the right one will be tricky. If they’re as per the FPLLive predictions though you could start with one of the 6.5’s and still get to just about any of the others (aside from Saka) once the picture becomes clearer. I’d probably favour Odegard to begin with as at least he feels certain to start though I think a better option will materialise.

Yeah no doubt Odegard starts so I am also leaning towards him.
Just that I have a very strong belief in Martinelli and was hoping this would be his year ,

Im backing Martinelli to have that kind of breakout this season and, apparently, will be enjoying his relatively modest EO at the start 🙂

Saka is legit, Ofegaard is legit value but Martinelli still has things to prove

I hope they keep Martinelli price low, keep him interesting

Just a question - I have kept the same team name for 4 seasons of playing. Seems wrong to change every year.

Best name that I never would have imagined for myself

    "Boom Xhaka Lacca"

I wish that dude would have won the FPL championship

Rasmus Kristensen, give the hard man a chance lads.

    > 7 goals 3 assists in 29 league games for RB Salzburg in 21/22
    > Averages 1.5(0.61) shots(on target) per 90,
    > Already playing well in pre-season, popping up in advanced positions and tenacious in his tackle as well. A huge upgrade on Ayling.
    >Only face 2 top6 teams in the first 8, and he rotates well with 4m NFO wingback Neco Williams, who helps Kristensen dodge the United and Chelsea games in GW3 and 8. A Neco/Kris rotation cost just as much as a 4.5m defender rotation, and at that price you're probably looking at CBs/non-attacking fullbacks.
    > Defence SHOULD improve with the inclusion of Tyler Adams and Roca in center midfield, keeping in mind Kalvin had a really poor season in 21/22, which contributed a really poor showing in the back. Marsch has also made them more solid since he came anyway.
