FPL 2022/23 ‘sleeper’ picks: David Raya

The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who had a quieter 2021/22, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise, who we think have the potential to make an impact in the coming season.

Here, we look at David Raya (£4.5m), who could push his way back into our thoughts as an FPL asset in 2022/23.

The screenshots and data are from our Premium Members Area – sign up today for £2.49 a month (billed annually) to get access to all of these statistics and a whole lot more.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: David Raya 1
  • Starts: 24
  • Goals conceded: 27
  • Clean sheets: 8
  • Saves: 78
  • FPL points: 95 (4.0 per match)

David Raya was one of Brentford’s best players in their debut Premier League campaign, as they ended in 13th place, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

The 26-year-old featured in 24 games for The Bees despite missing a few months due to a knee injury, conceding only 27 goals and keeping eight clean sheets, form which earnt him a maiden international call-up for Spain.

In that time, Raya also collected five bonus and 20 save points, proving himself to be a very capable shot-stopper at this level.

The Spaniard ranked 17th in his position for FPL points, but matched Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) on a points-per-match basis, a record that placed him joint-fourth among regular starters, only behind Alisson (£5.5m), Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) and Ederson (£5.5m):

With Raya injured last season, Brentford missed his presence greatly, with his deputy Alvaro Fernandez conceding 24 goals in 12 appearances, only registering one clean sheet.

However, following his return to action in February, it’s fair to say The Bees and Raya stepped up a level.

From Gameweek 24 onwards, in 15 starts, Raya averaged 4.1 points per match, a tally only two regular starting ‘keepers could beat (see below).

Five clean sheets were kept in that time, while the Spaniard also racked up 56 saves – only Illan Meslier (£4.5m), Nick Pope (£5.0m), Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) recorded more.

Raya’s passing ability, which is crucial to the way Brentford try to play out from the back, is also worth noting, with only Alisson, Ederson and Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) surpassing his BPS pass completion total of 32.

“I’ve always felt comfortable with the ball at my feet, and we work on that every week. The manager wants us to be another attacker, an extra element in bringing the ball out, creating chances and passes, short and long.” – David Raya

“The goalkeeper could wear the number ten shirt. He has sent several incredible balls, exactly what you should do when you play against us.” – Jurgen Klopp on David Raya after Brentford’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool in September

2022/23: THE PROSPECTS

Squad steps up as Robertson maintains fine form: FPL notes from Liverpool v Brentford 5

After a stellar first season in the Premier League, Brentford will look to continue improving in 2022/23.

And their end-of-season form bodes well, as they won seven of their last 11 matches, keeping four clean sheets while only conceding 12 goals.

“We will keep the foundations from this year – the defensive side of the game, fitness and set pieces. Then we’d like to add a bit more on the offensive side of the game in terms of controlling games like we did against West Ham at home. That was a very good example of how I’d like us to dominate games even more.” – Thomas Frank

“I don’t believe in all this second season stuff or the narrative around it. That said, I know we can be relegated next season, but I also know we can finish seventh. Everything’s possible between 20th and seventh. We want to add layers, build and end higher and play better football. That’s the aim, but you never know what happens to a team when they get a lot of injuries or lose momentum. But hopefully we’ll avoid that and build.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford ended the 2021/22 season ranked eighth overall for expected goals conceded (xGC, see below), but the fact the players now look comfortable in a 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 offers encouragement that they can adapt tactically to different situations and maybe improve upon that defensive record.

Notably, the Bees have a sustained good run of fixtures right through until the World Cup break.

In fact, they don’t meet one of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12, while Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool aren’t concerns until the festive period.

The big six sides they do encounter in Gameweeks 8 and 12 both have to come to the Brentford Community Stadium, too.

Now, with hopefully an injury-free season ahead of him, managers looking for value should consider Raya, who is perhaps the pick of the £4.5m ‘keepers on offer in FPL.

I get the impression that Potter really loves Welbeck...

"Sometimes you need a player that can make the difference and Danny Welbeck is a player that can make the difference, it's as simple as that. He doesn't win a game of football on his own, I'm sure he'll be the first to tell you that, but he's got the quality and

...he's one of our best players. He's got fantastic experience and it's common knowledge that if Danny Welbeck's fit and enjoying his football, he's a huge asset for us." - Potter, Dec 21

He's classy when fully fit, which doesn't appear to be very often.

I love Welbeck. And as Potter said at the end of the season, "he’s fully fit and enjoying his football".

While he's fit, I'm tempted to get him for Brighton's good set of fixtures.

I wonder if we'll see a repeat of Watford last year, where Josh King was the name everyone knew and had the PL 'pedigree' without really ever tearing it up, only for Emmanuel Dennis to come down the blindside on the back of a decent showing in a minor Euroleague and knock him into a cocked hat. I'm wondering whether Undav could be the one to have from B&HA.

    Bottomed.

I've decided to BB GWK1 and early wildcard. Anyone else fancying this strategy so that BB doesn't dictate any of your transfers in a negative way further down the line?

Just doesn't seem worth throwing away both so early in the season. What if the BB doesn't work out? It'll end up frustrating you and you'll wished you'd kept it for the DGW's later in the year.

    A: Chilwell, Saka, Coutinho, Undav

    D: Chilwell, Coutinho, Gray, Jesus

Note: 3/4 of these players will start.

Probably A from these options, but I would probably go with Chilwell, Coutinho, Jesus and 4.5m mid. This would let you upgrade Tomiyasu to someone like Trippier, Tierney, Cash, Digne or Perisic.

Anyone going with any massive punts?

Looking at sinisterra at 6.5m as Leeds have good fixtures first 8 games

Have been looking at odegaard but unsure of his minutes with viera signing.

Ward prowse has lions share of set pieces but poor fixture's

I don't think they're actually that bad. They bullied Arsenal at the end of last season and have Villa and Brentford at home as well (where they were very good last season). I can see them being tricky for Liverpool and City again too but those aren't ideal games for sure

If I was betting on a Man Utd revival it wouldn't be Rashford or Fernandes I'd get.

Martial got 17 goals and 9 assists when he was the main striker a couple of seasons ago and it could well be the case he's the only striker there soon.

Based on the reasons given for picking Raya from the start, do they hold true for Toney as well?
I get the whole 'look at what 7m gets you in defence' argument, but he could really start the season on fire with those fixtures, and I fancy a 7m forward and 4.5m defender to score better than a 4.5m forward and a 7m defender.

Talking keepers I was looking at Ramsdales stats to see why they tailed off so badly.

GW1-19 he scored 83 points. Joint top with SA. Played 16 games. 9 CS.

GW20-38 he scored 52 points. Joint 18th with Mendy & only Krul was worse on 51. Played 18 games & 3 CS.

Mendy also tailed off badly from 78 points in the 1st half season.

I believe a major influence on Ramsdale decline was the injuries to key defensive players & inadequate replacements.

    Tierney missed last 8 games
    Partey missed part 7 games
Tomiyasu missed the whole of the 2nd half of season aside from a couple of games at the end where he still wasn’t fit.

The solid unit had become broken & the replacements e.g. Tavares & Cedric were not up to the job.

Arsenal are looking to buy another DM LB & have Saliba back from loan & Tierney & Tomi fit again so I believe Ramsdale can become an option again with good early fixtures.

Anyone giving Ramsdake another crack or are there much better options…

Let’s see all the drafts with Sterling now that the Chelsea move is confirmed.

    Raya (4.0)
    TAA, Cancelo, Cash, Tomiyasu (4.5)
    Salah, Sterling, Diaz, Martinelli, Neves
    Haaland (4.5,4.5)

    Not shabby.

I could try to stretch 1.5m out of my squad to upgrade Bowen but honestly I feel more secure with Bowen. I'm sure Sterling will become viable at some point in the season but think getting him to start with would be too much of a drawback for the rest of my team

        I tend to agree.
If he makes it on the US tour that Chelsea are leaving on and does amazing then I might be tempted. Feels like post-WC1 might be the time.
With Ziyech leaving, Pulisic and Werner inconsistent I can see him becoming a fixture on the wing.

Probably but lots of unknowns atm. Ten haags midfield is all about ball retention and intricate movement. Bruno doesn't fit the profile at all. My guess is he plays wide in the front 3 or even false 9

I’m hoping if they move Ronaldo that Rashford becomes a good option for cheaper - but Bruno can be amazing and could be a steal.

Lots of talk about how the defenders at 7.5 and 7 are the best value money points wise but I don't recall there being such a plethora of attacking mids at 8 that could have massive seasons.

We had Bowen last year but Foden, Kulveski, Diaz, Maddison and Saka could all get an equally daft amount of points.

Yep there's loads. Seems like it might be a good strategy to have at least two 8.0 mids so you can move on the ones that are peaking.

They could but TAA Robbo Cancello have done it over a few seasons already ( no speculation with these). Also all the signs are that if Chelsea get a couple of decent centre backs James & Chilwell will join this points bracket. A good number of players could get plenty of points .
There has been plenty of chat on here regarding the inflexibility of 5 heavy hitters at the back. This is rubbish in my eyes as 2FT easily changes a formation and enables upgrades & downgrades where necessary.

      1. Bartowski
        • 13 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

I would disagree that there is no speculation. TAA and Robertson for the first time have real competition for their places, they will both get rested more this season than before and this will probably be in the easier fixtures or those before European games. Once City but Cucurella it will be the same for Cancelo.

In any respect my argument wasn't against defenders only that mids had been overlooked for their potential.

        1. George Sillett
          • 8 Years

Exactly the same applies to the mids as well re rotation and arguably even more so if past evidence is anything to go by. There is no speculation that the pints from previous seasons are in the book for TAA Robbo & Cancello. It's plain fact.

The difference that I was pointing out was that their points totals relied upon the fact they weren't being rotated so obviously it will go down if they are.

And so will that of the mids you mention as the clubs they play for have strengthened in midfield. It's all relative.

                1 year, 9 months ago

Yes I know that but the defenders you are saying will get this many points again is dependent on them playing the same amount of games which if they have proper competition won't happen and therefore they wont get the same amount of points.

The mids are not at all relevant top that point. The point is solely with regards to those defenders matching previous seasons point totals.

                  1 year, 9 months ago

In terms of PPG there is no speculation whatsoever. The mids are totally relevant as their PPG is relatively less and they are prone to the same or arguably more rotation.

Your original pint wasn't . It was about comparing the points potential of certain mids in relation to big hitting defenders. The fact remains that those defenders have the pints in the book from previous seasons and their PPG exceeds the mids. Whichever way you look at it with rotation if the PPG trend holds up they will still outscore those mids and are therefore better value .

Actually my point was two fold. That these 8m mids could compete with the 7.0+ def points wise. The initial point was based on the idea we haven't had this amount of cheap and excellent mids before so your previous seasons comparisons are irrelevant to the hypothesis. Diaz and Kulveski for example only joined in Jan. Foden has been in and out of the first team due to Sterling and Jesus.

The second part was that the defenders you refer to won't be able to match said previous seasons totals if as is suspected they now have the standard of competition in place that will see them rotated. This will especially be the case if they are rotated for the easier games where their points totals could be expected to be greater.

I don't actually see how you've countered either of those points mainly because I suspect you've already decided 541 is the way forward.

Plus any points totals are entirely relative to the defender you have in their place i.e King Lundstrom for example.

I think the problem here is we know almost for certain who the 6-7.5 defenders are that will be the high scorers.

The 8m mids are in abundance, any one of them at any point in time will deliver, but typically at different times as well.
It will inevitably be hard to not only choose the right ones, but also at the right time.

The baseline return for these premium defenders is higher more often than not too, as they play for defensively strong teams and have just the same likelihood of attacking returns to the 7-8m mids sometimes.

You are choosing to cherry pick your argument. On a previous post above I have stated that with 2 FT's the big at the back approach can be altered. Additionally please indicate where I have stated that I have decided that 541 is the way forward - you are factually incorrect here. I'm going with 532 for the record.

What does 'I suspect' mean, does it mean that you that it is factual or is it an assumption based on what a person has said and the present group think template on this site? As for cherry picking, I think I've been quite clear on what I believe although I do note that you don't actually counter either of my points but rather go on the defensive in so far as I have to state where you've said 541 even though I never said you stated that.

I've simply said mids are overlooked at the same price point, made it clear that this season is different in that respect from the off. Made it quite clear why I don't think the defenders you mention will necessarily match previous seasons points tallies and you've just ignored both points, offered no counter and gone with some tedious moral high ground nonsense.

Nope , you've certainly cherry picked , ignored the PPG point which is the crux when all positions are likely to be rotated more including the mids you mention ( as I have previously stated and you have conveniently brushed over ) . As for your moral high ground comment - really ?

Once again you haven't actually countered anything I've said. I had the decency to reply to your PPG argument by pointing out said players being rested this season for easier fixtures and you ignored that as well. Now you've also ignored what the words 'I suspect' mean and once again gone for the moral high ground by going 'really' so good luck with five at the back, you don't seem to be able to hold any point in your head apart from the one you're making.

Defenders at every price point are better value for money. Keep hearing "show me a 7m attacker that can get 200 points" but show me a 4.5 attacker that can get 130 (boosted to 150+ with good rotating pairs) or a 5.5 attacker that c

*5m attacker that can get 150
        Etc
Problem is we cant pick 15 defenders. The 7m defenders are good ootions for sure. So are the best 5, 4.5, 4 defenders. Balance and adaptability is key. We arent picking dead teams. I couldnt care less how much players will score over the season. Just the next month or two.

        • 13 Years

You're not playing the 4.5 attacker though and I agree defenders at any price point are better value for money so a 5.5 or 6.0 def and a 8.0 mid may be better than a 7.0+ and 6.5 mid.

Trying to play safe/flexible and see how the season goes before investing in Haaland (new strikers rarely fire consistently from day one).

    Raya (Balcome)
    TAA, James, Tomiyasu, Cancelo (anderson)
Salah, Bowen, Kulu, L Diaz (Rice)
    Jesus, Toney (Greenwood)

Can swap the £8M midfielders for Maddison or such depending on form?
If Jesus is a squib then can swap to Antonio, Watkins, Ings etc .

I really want Son in there but cant fit him in do have Kulu as a consolation.

Rice you may as well downgrade to 4.5. Not sure how nailed Kulu is with Richarlison there. If you switched Anderson to Neco and Rice to 4.5. And Kulu to Grealish. You could get Sterling for Bowen

Did BB GW1 last season. Worked out ok. Def enjoyed not having to think about it later in the season and actually had best season for a while.

Just a thought, can you play the BB while the world cup unlimited transfer rule is in play?

I'm reading the rules now and it doesn't seem to count as a wildcard, so looks like you can play it then?...

Looks a much better option than GW1 if that is the case.
