With six Gameweeks’ worth of Premier League player and team data now available, it’s time to bring Big Numbers back for the 2022/23 season.

For the uninitiated, this article series looks at the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) statistics ahead of the upcoming Gameweek.

These cherry-picked Opta stats can all be found in our Premium Members’ Area.

Only subscribers can read the full article; those wishing to sign up to our site and continue reading, as well as see a list of the benefits that Membership brings, can do so by clicking here.

Xhaka and Moura recalled as Ramsdale starts again

-3.50 expected goals prevented (xGP) by Danny Ward (£4.0m) this season. In layman’s terms, the Leicester City goalkeeper has conceded on 16 occasions when Opta’s ‘expected’ data reckons he should only have shipped 12.5 goals. That makes him the biggest underperformer of current starting Premier League goalkeepers, while no present number one has a worse save percentage (53.3%).

+2.60 is, by contrast, Jordan Pickford‘s (£4.5m) xGP in the first six Gameweeks, which is the best among FPL goalkeepers this season. He has been in fine form for the Toffees but he’ll be absent with a thigh injury in Gameweek 8, which could be a boost to the Fantasy prospects of West Ham attackers.

14 of Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£4.9m) last 16 Premier League starts have seen the Arsenal goalkeeper finish the match without a clean sheet. His xGP in that time is a poor -5.50, while his save percentage is down at a miserable 57.7%.

0.8 points per match averaged by Lucas Digne (£4.7m) this season, the joint-lowest mean of any ever-present starter in 2022/23 to date.

16 penalty box touches registered by Diogo Dalot (£4.5m) in the first six Gameweeks of the season, a total that no other FPL defender can better. Dalot’s rate of penalty area touches per 90 minutes has more than doubled compared to 2021/22, while he is also currently third for chances created (10) among players in his Fantasy position.

GW7 will still happen, just perhaps not this weekend if London Bridge falls down?

Or will it be cancelled altogether in sympathy?

Best guess would be all the games cancelled, GW7 deadline still happens and passes (as the deadlines did during the Covid suspension of 2019/20), and the matches form part of a DGW later in the season. But purely speculation on my part.

My favourite series, even if this one showing that transfering in Kulusevski was not very smart decision. And by the way Ward is really awful:)

Even if it seems like a meaningless article, there may be something on there that someone may not be aware of and gives them food for thought.

Didn't know about Dalot's penalty box touches and now he's on my watchlist for gw8.

      Thanks for this. Much appreciated

"while no present number one has a worse save percentage (53.3%)."

The weird thing I found while looking at goalkeepers yesterday is that Ward has stiff competition with Ederson (54.5%). All others have more than 60% saves. Pickford has been so much ahead of others (in calendar year 2022) that its incredible.

    1. GreennRed
      • 14 Years
      3 years, 3 months ago

Depends what the number of saves are a percentage of. Ward behind a poor defence. Ederson has 3 cleansheets, average is 1 save per game, 6 conceded. Ward average 2.5 saves per game, no cleansheets, 16 conceded.

Aye I noticed Ederson! He's not the greatest shotstopper by any stretch but you're dealing in such small numbers with City and shot concessions that one goal conceded sends his figure tumbling. Eg he had no chance with Bailey's shot in GW6 but that was the only shot on target he faced, so it's a 0% save percentage!

Mendy in goal has been a headache for me...I keep thinking I should sell him but the RMT tool keeps predicting he'll do better than the other options. Now he's dropped .1mil so I can't even get to Pope. With a new manager bounce Chelsea might keep a clean sheet, but he also might get benched for Kepa. I should just sell him, right?

I'd avoid Arsenal defence totally, there are better options out there. But if you were going to have one of them then Zinchenko has the potential to play further up the pitch so could get attacking returns. Gabriel isn't bad, likely to get a few goals a season from corners. I think Saliba isn't a great option long term; whilst he's had a good start I think he's still the most likely to be rotated and his attacking returns have been lucky rather than backed up with good xgi.

What's your view on Potter-less Brighton facing Bournemouth this gw? Are they gonna win easily? Are they gonna score lots of goals? Cause i was about to punt on Trossard

Would expect them to still be ok this weekend (if the game is on). They are still a well organised team against one of the worst teams in the league.
