Southampton boss Nigel Adkins moved to boost the club’s defensive ranks last week by snapping up England Under 21 defender Nathaniel Clyne from Crystal Palace on a four-year deal. The right-back arrives at St Mary’s under freedom of contract but, due to the fact he is under 24, the Saints are still required to fork out a fee for his services – talks are still ongoing between the two clubs as to the level of compensation:

Clyne will join up with former Palace defenders Jose Fonte and Danny Butterfield at Southampton and is expected to challenge the latter and Frazer Richardson for a spot in a back-four that chalked up 19 clean sheets last time round – the second best record from the promoted clubs, just behind Reading’s total of 20. Delighted to finally clinch the signature of a player who has been linked with the likes of Man United over the past year, Adkins went on to say:

For the last three years Nathaniel has been a very attack-minded full-back who bombs on – he’s got pace and he’s a good one-on-one defender. He got into the Championship Team of the Year last year, and for such a young age he has had a lot of first-team football in the Championship. All being well, we can push him onto the next level now.

The Statistics

Clyne moves to St Mary’s after spending four seasons at Palace, his only senior club. Handed his debut for the London outfit by then-manager Neil Warnock back in October 2008, he managed 26 league appearances and picked up a couple of assists in his first term at Selhurst Park. The following season saw him continue to develop at the Championship club, with 22 appearances producing a goal and an assist – Clyne’s displays earned him the Young Player of the Year accolade in each of his first two seasons at the Eagles and helped him break unto the England Under 19 set-up.

The 2010/11 campaign saw Clyne step up in performance; playing every one of Palace’s league games, he provided three assists from the right-back berth and this time received the club’s Player of the Year award. Despite turning out for the England U21s on a couple of occasions, his game time was somewhat curtailed last term, with knee and foot injuries limiting Clyne to 28 appearances, with a single assist returned.

The Prospects

At 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and a mere 3.7 in the Sky Sports game, Clyne is a real cut-price option for our Fantasy squads but, at present, it’s perhaps a little too early to say just where he stands in Adkins’ first-team thinking.

Last season, Richardson was the club’s main right-back but lost his place to Butterfield over the last five league matches of the 2011/12 campaign after the latter recovered from injury; while Clyne’s acquisition will certainly increase competition for the role, Fantasy managers will be intrigued to see that the new boy made his debut as a right winger last weekend.

While the Saints boss raved about Clyne’s 20 minute debut display against Évian Thonon Gaillard, with four pre-season games still left to play we’ll be keeping a keen eye on Adkins’ plans. The Southampton boss has been tinkering with a 4-3-2-1 formation recently and, if it transpires that he intends to utilise Clyne’s trickery in possession and blistering acceleration further up the pitch, there is the chance we could have a real bargain out-of-position prospect on our hands – hopefully next weekend’s friendly against Ajax will shed more light on the situation.

Looking at the fixture list, many will be tempted to avoid Southampton’s Fantasy assets over the first four Gameweeks at least; a horrendous opening run of matches, with trips to City and Arsenal as well as a home clash against United, are anything but enticing. The upside is we will have time to analyse Clyne’s impact on the Saints first-team, then, and assess his likely game time before deciding whether investment is worthwhile before their schedule take a turn for the good in Gameweek 5, with (AVL, FUL, whm, wba) to follow in the next six.

Ok everyone, here is my plan...

Pick a good team now, taking into account the teams with easy fixtures etc

Then use my WC when the fixtures turn & I know who is actually starting etc

Before & after this, I will just use 1 transfer a week, replacing injured players, or ones that are doing crap.

I will captain a home player with the easiest fixture.

Easy peasy, why are everyone coming up with these 10 week masterplans??

Well, for example, in a 10 week plan, it rarely takes into account that the likes of Kawaga might not start, or may need time to adjust, players getting injured or suspended etc

So this big plans will more than likely not come into practice.

My point is that this big masterplan doesnt work, so you are only wasting time.

Injuries will happen, a lot of players we dont know will do really well & suddenly everyone will get them instead.

Also transfers are only just starting too...

              Not at all.

I am questioning the logic in making a 10 week plan, when we dont know who will actually start, what position they will play, transfers in/out by the club, injuries, suspensions, form...

This is why I said my plan was to just pick a side that has good fixtures, then use my WC when we have a better insight into form & players that are starting.

So basically your planning to use your WC early. Personally I am picking a team that will work for the entire season if it has to, hopefully I can get away with not WC'ing

    Federici, Friedel
Lescott, Ivanovic, 4mil WHU defender so McCartney/Demel, Rafael, Wilson
    Sigurdsson, Ramires, Pienaar, Taarabt, Dyer
    Maiga, Aguero, Torres (>Rooney GW2)

Thats City, United, Spurs and Chelsea defensive coverage
Quite happy to take a punt on Maiga from what I've read on these forums
Think midfield may be a little light but much will depend on where Pienaar ends up

I am now considering Ramires over Lampard so I can squeeze a spurs midfielder in from the off. Is Rafael not a big rotation risk? I can just see frustration with him all season like many had with Richards last season tbh. I would not have Torres anywhere near my side, but thats just me, my 3 chelsea are A.Cole, Ramires(Or Lamps) and Hazzard

I take it thats wilson from stoke yeah? Who rotate very nicely with west ham, but Stokes home games are horrific. Have you considered a Norwich defender? Teirney is 4mil, and has nice home games when west ham are away, at least up till GW 8. Hughton should sort the Norwich defence out

Could be a shout and would free up 0.5mil. Had originally planned to steer well clear of Norwich defence but you may have a point with Hughton coming in.
On second thoughts though, with West Ham's good early fixtures and having 3 "big hitters" in defence (assuming Rafael plays) its unlikely Wilson would get a look in until further down the line when Stokes run of fixtures will have improved.

It finished 4-4 on aggregate, but the Dudes got through after scoring three away goals in Austria this evening. Groussaarteg!

        http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18974073

Seems he must have said yid. Strange one this as at every spurs game I have been to one of the chants has been "yid army" in this past it was used as a derogatory term but nit any more, spurs fans have taken the term and made it their own

I just see that defence giving you major headaches mate, you`ll be chopping and changing and wasting transfers. Stoke have a horrible start, who knows how swansea will be at the back under laudrup, fulham are not really known for clean sheets. My advice is get at least 2 of the big boys in there for the first 5 or so weeks, a.cole is 6.5 so is lescott. get those 2 in, and then you can judge who is "unexpectadly" keeping cleanies like Swansea did last year

    Reasons for not getting Kagawa;

He may not start straight away.

Even if he does start straight away, he may take a few games to adjust to the new league & team mates

    His fixtures:

    23 Sep 13:30 Gameweek 5 Liverpool (A)
    29 Sep 17:30 Gameweek 6 Tottenham (H)
    07 Oct 16:00 Gameweek 7 Newcastle (A)
    20 Oct 15:00 Gameweek 8 Stoke City (H)
    28 Oct 16:00 Gameweek 9 Chelsea (A)
    03 Nov 12:45 Gameweek 10 Arsenal (H)

I think I will wait until these fixtures are over before getting him into my team.

I find myself agreeing with you. *pinches himself*

      Hazard
      Kagawa
      Torres

These 3 are becoming part of the FFS template, and there are quite a few risks embedded on punting on any of the three, let alone all of them. That said, they are all in my current draft. I do assume though that there will be some level of disappointment with at least 1 or 2 of them at the start of the season.

Liverpool? Mid table team now. Tottenham at home? United have an incredible record against Totenham. Stoke at home? Easy. Arsenal at home? Do you have any memories of that fixture? I'm asking you as a Gooner, I do.

So that leaves only 2 fixtures I'd wait for... our of 10.

Main reason not to get Kagawa is that for just £.5m extra you can get a quality proven FPL prospect in Nani who's still somehow a differential at around 5% ownership. Or Valencia too for the same price.

Had 2 million to do Torres --> Rooney GW 3 but then decided to use it to get Aguero for playing Southampton. Then Aguero --> Ade GW 2 for Spurs coverage and to free that 2mil up again for Torres --> Rooney GW 3. So really no money left.
