Our series of articles assessing the potential of certain key candidates from the three promoted clubs got underway earlier today with a look at Southampton’s Rickie Lambert. Next up under analysis is skipper of the npower Championship winners Reading, Jobi McAnuff:

The left winger was a key contributor in his side’s title-winning season last time round. McAnuff missed just six league matches, playing 40 times and, with five goals and 11 assists, was the Royals’ chief creator; only Noel Hunt – with eight goals and nine assists – contributed to more of Reading’s 69 goals in 2011/12. With McAnuff’s game time looking assured for the upcoming campaign, he looks in pole position to once again play a significant part in his side’s attacking forays.

The Statistics

McAnuff began his career as a 20-year-old at Wimbledon in 2001-02. Over the course of his three seasons with the Dons he made 96 league appearances and netted 12 times before the club went into administration – as a result, he joined Alan Pardew’s West Ham in the January 2004 transfer window. His time at Upton Park was brief, however; the winger played just 13 matches and scored a single goal before making his way to Cardiff after just six months at the London club.

Once again, he was afforded little time to settle – a single season in Wales produced two goals in 44 league appearances before Crystal Palace came calling. McAnuff spent two years at Selhurst Park, returning 12 goals and seven assists in 77 league matches before joining up at Watford in June 2007 in a deal thought to be worth £1.75m. A couple of seasons at the Hornets saw the winger make 82 league appearances, scoring five times and providing 14 assists before former Watford boss Brendan Rodgers snapped up his services for Reading prior to the closure of the August 2009 transfer window. Despite Rodgers’ subsequent departure, McAnuff seems to have finally found his home at the Madejski and has flourished under the guidance of Brian McDermott. Already, he has spent three seasons at the club and, prior to the beginning of last term, was handed the armband – to date, he has appeared in 116 league matches for the Royals, scoring 12 goals and providing 27 assists.

The Prospects

Although Reading have been one of the busiest clubs in this summer’s transfer window with six new faces already unveiled, McAnuff’s position has not been threatened. The acquisition of Garath McCleary from Nottingham Forest places doubts over last season’s regular right winger, Jimmy Kebe, but McAnuff, as the skipper, looks a far more secure starter on the opposite flank.

To some extent, the downside to investing in Reading’s attacking assets is that there was no real home/away disparity in terms of goals scored last term; the Royals bagged 36 in front of their own fans and 33 on the road, meaning it could be a touch more difficult to rotate their mid-price options with as much confidence as, say, Southampton; Nigel Adkins’ side notched 13 more goals at home (49 versus 36), for example. McDermott’s tactics means the Royals utilise speed on the flank to hit on the counter, regardless of opponent – in all likelihood, there is as much chance of McAnuff producing the goods away from home as there is at the Madejski if the club keep the same approach as last season.

Costing 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.0 in the Sky Sports game, McAnuff is reasonably priced, considering his creative potential but there are, perhaps, question marks as to whether McDermott’s approach will be quite so fruitful in the Premier League. Of all the Royals midfield assets, though, McAnuff looks to hold the most potential, given how vital the wide men are to their attacking forays; bearing in mind the central midfielders’ main job in McDermott’s system is to sit deep in front of the back-four and break up the opposition play, their appeal looks comparatively sparse.

A double Gameweek 1 will no doubt boost McAnuff’s initial level of investment, with Reading playing host to Stoke before travelling to Chelsea but, after that, the schedule is anything but enticing. With trips to Sunderland and West Brom, allied with home clashes against Spurs and Newcastle in addition to a blank Gameweek 3, it’s fair to say the allure of Reading’s assets could quickly dissipate – bearing in mind there are a handful of similarly priced or cheaper options with better opening schedules, it could well be we treat McDermott’s men with much trepidation until their fixtures take a turn for the better.

I actually haven't seen that one, but I will check it out.

Even if films are 'shite', I can actually still appreciate them.

The worst ones are just 'mediocre' films. If a films really bad, at least I'll probably still pay attention to it for the laughs.

What time constitutes the Dead Zone? If I keep drinking furiously for the next hour surely I'm in?
Sometimes I read back on the middle-of-the-night stuff. Lots and lots of people from another hemisphere posting fantasy football gems to each other.
I note that the DZers always congratulate each other on the quality their posts. They pay particular attention to highlighting the fact that us dopey Euro's can't quite compete with their in-depth analysis.

    C'mon! Set up your "Southern Cross" league again! It was DOMINATED by your Celtic brethren last year ; top three ;

              1. Aguero will be rotated once the UCL starts, so i'd make the most of him for the first few gameweeks.

              2. Rooney counts as up top by himself, as Kagawa will play deeper than Rooney did last season.

Indeed, I was painfully burned by Silva and Aguero's rotation last season but Aguero at least looks a must for GW1 and 3.

I will go with Rooney from the off and yeah I can definitely see it going that way.

I count both actually! City play 4-2-3-1 with Aguero the lone striker most of the time, at least according to the average position maps, and that's good enough for me. I anticipate Rooney being freed to be the lone striker with Kagawa's arrival.

So maybe I am going for teams with 1 striker! However, if such 4231/4411s count along with 433s then we still have a lot to choose from. It has helped solve the Norwich striker and, more importantly, Newcastle striker conundrum though as Ba and Cissé will surely share the points in a move back to 4-4-2.

we play single ST at Arsenal. With Wenger saying Podolski will play centrally it's a no brainer for me. Whoever plays for us centrally scores. When Bendther was there due to injuries to others he was banging them in. Hell Chamack was scoring 2 seasons ago when he was leading the line during RVPs injury

Yep you mention all these occasions we only had one striker available which is kind of my point. We have two very first choice strikers available, they will both play and reading what Wenger says they will play closely. Both are used to being main scorers at their club not creators - Giroud in particular has always been the target. Hence it'll be about as 2 striker as you can get.

but only 1 will be central. If its Giroud then im having him in my team but Wenger wants Podolski there. We are not returning to 2 strikers. One will be on the bench.

What evidence do you have for that? It's not a rule that we have to play 4-2-3-1, your personnel set the formation, not the other way round.

We only had RVP as a serious striker last year, so we played 4-2-3-1

We have 2 serious strikers now, Wenger will adjust accordingly.

    For Now Back To Me

Been following this a bit. Sounds like he wants to play two central strikers feeding off each other (perhaps Podolski more off Giroud). Interesting firstly that he also mentioned 4-4-2, are we heading for that then? I worry about too much space between the attacking lines but at the same time it gets rid of our problem finding a player to go in the hole.

Secondly, are we going all physical? All Stokey? 😉

Interestingly I have a dilema - Park or Kagawa?

Will Kagawa get played like Park did or will he be a permanent starter?

With Park having moved to QPR he should get a lot more starts yet, is he past his time now?

I've always enjoyed watching Park Ji Sung play and felt he was one of the most underrated players in the United side. Will he bring that magic over to QPR and will it rain goals for the Queens PARK Ranger?

    Morning chaps,

So, I figure a big decision this year is whether to go with:

    a) 2 big hitters in midfield and 3 big hitters up front, or
    b) 3 big hitters in midfield and 2 big hitters up front

It's a tough call, but I'm swaying towards a) mainly because I think there are a lot more strikers than midfielders in the 8.5m + range that have explosive potential, and allowing 3 spots for these players should make it easier to bring them in when they hit form. Also, I think there are a lot more decent options in midfield than up front in the 6.5m and below range.

Which way are you guys swaying, and more importantly, why?

Looking at the top scores across positions (from last season at least), it seems unlikely you'll miss out on any big scorers in defence. 3 uber cheapies for me at the back and 3 in midfield to rotate... *

Right, I'm in the DZ. So i Have a DZ question.
How do spiders stay alive? I remember having a spider living in my wing mirror for what seemed like years. No amount of car washes got rid of him...he always re-appeared. He was a very little lad so I always assumed he got to eat microscopic flies or what-nots that came his way....fair enough.
I've now got a big MFer living in my downstairs toilet. He only seems to appear late at night in one particular corner and he's never there during the day.
Don't get me wrong...I'm not one of those people who's scared of spiders or anything, so I'm just wonderin'....does the poor little guy have enough to eat an' all?
My limited arachnid knowledge only extends to the fact that they eat flies (caught efficiently in their high-tech webs) but I can't see a web and there's no way any flies can get through a closed door.

He's growing on me tho....I've named him Siggy.

Following on from Jinswick's suggestion of punting on Tevez last night, this is what I can do if I downgrade my Rooney/Torres/Aguero attack to Rooney/Torres/Tevez - and go for the "4 x 6.5ish mids" strategy.

    Federici DDG
Cole Dawson Cuellar/Gunter/McCartney - play 1 from these 3 every week
Kagawa Pienaar/N'Zogbia/Ramires/Taarabt - play 3 from these 4 every week
    Rooney Torres Tevez

The advantage of the 6.5ish mid strategy is that there are so many players at that price that they are easily swapped for each other if you get the wrong one.

the cheapest of my midfielders is 6.5 😀 talk about different strategies. might work though! i think tevez will be AMAZING if he starts, but it may be a big if... then again i've got aguero silva AND nasri atm :S

Aguero and Silva safe! Nasri... errrrrrgh. If I get Silva instead of Aguero a whole different set of possibilities opens up, looked at that too.

I'm working on the assumption that loads of our GW1 picks will be crap so I'd better make it as easy as possible to bring in the ones that did well - surely one or two of the 6.5ers will.

nasri is a bit of a punt but considering he had a supposedly crap season last time round he actually scored pretty well per minutes played, so if he really hits form he could be brutal. plus he's at least as likely to start as tevez methinks.

You're right, this year has been a crazy one for midfield transfers, everyone's fixing their holes in the middle!

If I wimp out on Tevez I could downgrade him to say Graham, upgrade Kagawa to Silva to retain safe City attacking cover and upgrade Ramires to Kagawa...

i've ended up going with two cheapo forwards ATM 'cause i think the striker options are sort of abysmal in the expensive bracket aside from rooney/aguero :S i am NOT trusting torres

you'd need to formulate a plan, as reading don't play GW3 of course.... really it depends on whether there's someone you want to upgrade elsewhere in your team. if you can't make great use of the 1.0 then i'd stick with graham, who has impeccable fixtures.

at the moment i have lescott in defence... and i think i could get Kompany with this amount... but yeah as you said, reading is not playing in GW 3 so have to think about that... moreover in my team there is kebe, so to transfer both the players is nigh impossible to me.. so i think i will stick with graham and lescott instead of pogrebnyak and kompany

Any thoughts on Lamps for this season? Hazard scored the goals @ Lille last season, but 9 or so from the spot. Chelsea look a tricky team this year and I can see a good amount of PKs coming their way with Oscar, Hazard in the side. Will Hazard take over from the spot or will Lamps enjoy the fruits of this new look Chelsea labor?

Dont think so either and so my point is - take away his 9 pks last season and his 1 fluke fk goal and it drops him to 10 goals. Granted he drew many of his own pks and so his assist level may be high, but this isnt france either. If Lamps can hold his playing time, and with this new supporting cast - I think Fatty may find again away back to his better FPL seasons.

it's really hard to call i think. if he gets the same amount of gametime as last season, he absolutely rips his score from last season to shreds. but i'm betting he'll get less, despite AVB's reign cutting into his playtime; he's a year older, and chelsea have WAY more options now than before. furthermore he's likely to, on average, play a deeper role i should think, which makes him more heavily reliant on pens. there's just so many variables and i'm not gonna risk it, at least 'til we see what RDM's plans are.
