Our series of articles assessing the potential of certain key candidates from the three promoted clubs got underway earlier today with a look at Southampton’s Rickie Lambert. Next up under analysis is skipper of the npower Championship winners Reading, Jobi McAnuff:

The left winger was a key contributor in his side’s title-winning season last time round. McAnuff missed just six league matches, playing 40 times and, with five goals and 11 assists, was the Royals’ chief creator; only Noel Hunt – with eight goals and nine assists – contributed to more of Reading’s 69 goals in 2011/12. With McAnuff’s game time looking assured for the upcoming campaign, he looks in pole position to once again play a significant part in his side’s attacking forays.

The Statistics

McAnuff began his career as a 20-year-old at Wimbledon in 2001-02. Over the course of his three seasons with the Dons he made 96 league appearances and netted 12 times before the club went into administration – as a result, he joined Alan Pardew’s West Ham in the January 2004 transfer window. His time at Upton Park was brief, however; the winger played just 13 matches and scored a single goal before making his way to Cardiff after just six months at the London club.

Once again, he was afforded little time to settle – a single season in Wales produced two goals in 44 league appearances before Crystal Palace came calling. McAnuff spent two years at Selhurst Park, returning 12 goals and seven assists in 77 league matches before joining up at Watford in June 2007 in a deal thought to be worth £1.75m. A couple of seasons at the Hornets saw the winger make 82 league appearances, scoring five times and providing 14 assists before former Watford boss Brendan Rodgers snapped up his services for Reading prior to the closure of the August 2009 transfer window. Despite Rodgers’ subsequent departure, McAnuff seems to have finally found his home at the Madejski and has flourished under the guidance of Brian McDermott. Already, he has spent three seasons at the club and, prior to the beginning of last term, was handed the armband – to date, he has appeared in 116 league matches for the Royals, scoring 12 goals and providing 27 assists.

The Prospects

Although Reading have been one of the busiest clubs in this summer’s transfer window with six new faces already unveiled, McAnuff’s position has not been threatened. The acquisition of Garath McCleary from Nottingham Forest places doubts over last season’s regular right winger, Jimmy Kebe, but McAnuff, as the skipper, looks a far more secure starter on the opposite flank.

To some extent, the downside to investing in Reading’s attacking assets is that there was no real home/away disparity in terms of goals scored last term; the Royals bagged 36 in front of their own fans and 33 on the road, meaning it could be a touch more difficult to rotate their mid-price options with as much confidence as, say, Southampton; Nigel Adkins’ side notched 13 more goals at home (49 versus 36), for example. McDermott’s tactics means the Royals utilise speed on the flank to hit on the counter, regardless of opponent – in all likelihood, there is as much chance of McAnuff producing the goods away from home as there is at the Madejski if the club keep the same approach as last season.

Costing 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.0 in the Sky Sports game, McAnuff is reasonably priced, considering his creative potential but there are, perhaps, question marks as to whether McDermott’s approach will be quite so fruitful in the Premier League. Of all the Royals midfield assets, though, McAnuff looks to hold the most potential, given how vital the wide men are to their attacking forays; bearing in mind the central midfielders’ main job in McDermott’s system is to sit deep in front of the back-four and break up the opposition play, their appeal looks comparatively sparse.

A double Gameweek 1 will no doubt boost McAnuff’s initial level of investment, with Reading playing host to Stoke before travelling to Chelsea but, after that, the schedule is anything but enticing. With trips to Sunderland and West Brom, allied with home clashes against Spurs and Newcastle in addition to a blank Gameweek 3, it’s fair to say the allure of Reading’s assets could quickly dissipate – bearing in mind there are a handful of similarly priced or cheaper options with better opening schedules, it could well be we treat McDermott’s men with much trepidation until their fixtures take a turn for the better.

    Afternoon lads, 2 Questions:

1 - Will Wilshire (possibly) coming back eat into Arteta's gametime?
2 - Who is the best mid at 7.0 or less?

Yeah! I think he was great in last season too (when got to play). Unlucky not to get more goals & assists. Didn't have penalty duties last season. If he's now on penalties and gets to play every game, he's able to have a grrrrreat fantasy season.

I've heard from one or two people on here saying Lindegaard has been looking really good in the pre-season friendlies. Perhaps ddg's spot isn't so concrete as we first thought. I'm going with Mignolet and Federici this year, two budget options who I believe rotate moderately well

It's strange, it seems the price of the mids (and some defenders) have been cheaper than ever, but the high price of RVP, Rooney and Aguero have made it harder than ever to form a team this year. Who else are your GKs and defenders?

C'mon.. I woudn't say harder than ever! RVP is more expensive yes, but Rooney, Aguero & Suarez are the same price. Tevez is cheaper. (Almost) All the mids are cheaper. Imo it's a lot easier to form a team than the previous 2 seasons i've been playing. Currently have 5.0mil in the bank!

I have 3 possible drafts...uber cheap at the back(3x4m) / Expensive(2x6.5m)/budget(1x6.5m+1x5m)...deciding which one to go with obviously effect the rest of the team.

            At the moment I'm on:

            Jussi
            Lescott/Hughes/Mariappa
            Dempsey*/Lamps/Noble/Bale
            Kun/torres/Graham

            Bego/Cuellar/Maloney/Clyne

*If he stays at Fulham. Lamps might become Hazard if I downgrade Hughes to a 4m def, but that might be pushing it to far.

Too much uncertainty in you defence, Chiristina.

Hughes, Mariappa, Clyne all have ?'s against their nailed on status.

Either Torres or Lamps for me but not both. Downgrade Lamps so that you can get a better keeper and some more 'nailed on' defenders, in my opinion.

I disagree. Hughes played all of the friendlies so far. Also played last couple of games towards end of last season. Easy enough to replace with Fabio(Happy?)

One of Gorkks/Mariappa has to play for Reading. They only have 4m defenders!

Clyne/Fonte will play. Rotates perfect h/a to start off. Lamps becomes Valencia/Kagawa in week 3.

You have a lot of power in those mids and forwards, but with the light defence you have, you need everyone of those mids and forwards to play. Lamps is too risky, I'd downgrade to Kagawa and maybe upgrade Hughes to Hangeland for that potential attacking potential

Mignolet and Green for me. When QPR have tough fixtures Sunderand seem to always have favourable ones.

Sunderland should be able to handle Swansea in GW3, Liv in GW4 and QPR at home to Everton who they bet 1-0 at Goodison last season?

              Sunderland GK is fine.

In fact, I'd say its a damn sight better for cleanie chances than Jussi and Federici who are in everyones teams and despite great early fixtures look certain to concede goals to all comers.

Sppend that extra on 2 good defenders and rotate 3.

Look at last years winners GK splits mate. Look at rotation tables for last season as well as see how useless it ended up being. I ended up playing Krul virtually every week by the end of the season.

Spend your money on goalscoring strikers and mids, that's where your FPL points are going to come from.

No, I said your defenders weren't all nailed on. Nowt wrong with cheap defenders but just try and pick ones who will start every week.

Those tend to be found in the £4.5m category. I agree with the tactic but think you could choose a better 1st choice keeper and a few better defenders by balancing out your team a little better.

    Morning fellas

Which one you prefer safer bet to start the season?

    a) Mignolet + Rafael
    b) DDG + Cuellar

Also q for your tactics / midfield

    a) 2 * big + 2 cheapies + 1 mid price
    b) one big + 1 cheapie + 3 mid price

I'm currently on b) because I see lot's of good players in 6-7 mil category, so it should be easy to swap those players. Of course if Kagawa, Hazard, Siggy, Nasri, Nani etc starts to bang points, it would be harder to jump to those wagons - well actually, 4 point hit needed, is that so bad..

Have a look at what fergie does before squeezing him in Jinswick.

I don't quite like your team.

      Lamps - might play deeper
Cole more of a certain starter over Ivanovic

Probably right on Rafael - I think he's first choice at the moment, especially with the injuries they have at the back, but who knows with Fergie eh! Seems a snip at 5.5m if he is indeed a regular!

Lamps is for a 1-2 week gamble - he most likely -> Bale in GW2 or GW3. Pens and, I think, more assured starts than all the new boys (RDM loves our fat frank) is swaying me his way.

I think Cole and Ivan are both nailed on, unless they sign a new RB. Ivan's only competition is Ferreira, who is pants.

This deep playing nonsense with Lamps is well...nonsense. I'm with Jinsi, it's a 1-2 week gamble. Lamps still on corners and fk's. Oh, and peno's. And he is a fattrack* bully.

Wait with Rafael. Won't get much from EVE i think. If I go with Cole, then he becomes Rafael as soon as ManU settles down.

Jeez, I'm so confused at the moment. I have 3-4 drafts that I have printed. Ubercheap/exp/budget defence. All depends if Demps stays at fulham I'm afraid. For me anyway.

I had Hazard in my team since FPL opened, but I have Clint at the moment + Lamps(who I want to own at least once this season. Week 1, prob the best time!)

Benefit of JT is obv his goal threat and he is nailed on. I've toyed with him becoming vidic/baines later on but decided against it. Like you I'm hoping the inj at Manu make it possible to get some action from Rafael. Jelly/Pienaar I prefer at EVEwhen their fix pick up.

Re hang/hughes..tosey seems to think Hughes is nailed on. I suppose the risk is Senderos. I was shocked to read the CS stats from ful from last season. 5th highest number of CS away from home. Only ranked 15th at home! I'd prefer hughes + Williams.

Same here with Hazard - had him in for a while, but not been impressed with him so far, so he's out for Fatty.

Just comparing the 5.0m defenders on the comparison tool - Rangel is a stand out winner over the last 6 matches, and with his fixtures, perhaps he and Ivan are the way to go!!

                For e.g. key stats over the last 6....Rangel 9 - 0 Hangelaand !!

Sorry,I can't help you there. I'm not a member. I'm not a believer in getting to bogged down in stats and comparisons.(Sorry Mark) FPL is a guessing game. No one knows what is going to happen.

I hope you are not referring to the last 6 fix of the season?! That's way off! No way will teams stay the same for so long. Injuries, rotation, loss of form will come into the equation and no tool can predict that.

Another top 1k finish for you it seems. Doing all the hard work already.

Haha, I think I actually look into the stats too much sometimes. 2 personal targets for this year are to trust my gut more often, and take more hits. Only took 3 last year and a number of those I held back on would've earned me a fair few points.

Looking at last 6 matches, which I think covers the last 6 games each player played in. Bizarelly I can't find a defender who scores higher than Rangel!! Welcome to the team, Angel Rangel!

Nice team, Jinswick. Re Dempsey, wasn't his main attraction last season based on him starting a lot of games up front? Now Fulham have Petric and Rodellega, doesn't this mean he'll be playing further back?

Thanks! Hmm, perhaps, although I don't think he knows how to play further back. He was still uber attacking when on the pitch with Pog and A Johnson. Fulham also have decent fixtures and I assume Dempsey is now on pens with Murphy leaving. The obvious alternative is Bale, and it will definitely be him if Dempsey joins lolerpool.

I really feel that Torres, Rooney and Kun are unnecessary. I'd downgrade Rooney to a cheaper striker, then trade Torres out in GW3 for Rooney. If you get someone like Graham, that leaves you with 4.0 to spend on midfielders and defenders

Cheers. That said, being captain doesn't always mean you start every week (looking at you Ledley). A fair bit of uncertainty in the CB role at Spurs I reckon - perhaps a wait and see for a few weeks.

That's because Ledley did his training on an exercise bike for the past few years to prevent his knees from exploding, but yes Holt didn't start every game last season and he is our captain

Add how AVB likes to play his defence (High as hell). Imo Tottenham are worse then Chelsea on paper for that. And if AVB is as stubborn as he was with Chelsea Tottenham will leak goals like the Titanic. Im not touching anything defensive from Tottenham untill i see how they play.

No way are Spurs less suited to the high defensive line than Chelsea were. All the Spurs defenders are faster. Whether the high defensive line works is another matter entirely though.

How about Cashley, Hangeland and Maloney instead of what you have for option B? I feel B>A, but I think my adjustment means you get rid of Hughes, who isn't nailed on for someone who will play and carries a decent attacking threat

Not a bad idea, although I think I'd prefer a NEW or SWA defender if going into the 5.0m bracket.

Also, looking at the stats, JT and Ivanovic are waaaaay ahead of Cashley, so I'm tempted to stick with one of them....

I'm getting Cashley just for the job security. He is as nailed on as JT, and for some reason, there is a little bit of doubt in my mind over Ivan. I would prefer to go Ivan myself, but I feel Cashley is more nailed on than him.

I wouldn't say nailed on, but of all the mids, I feel he is the most likely to play. We have a lot of good mids this season (Snodgrass, Pilks, Surman, Crofts, Fox, Howson just to name a few) and to be honest, I would not get any of our mids due to the uncertainty surrounding our formation

Uhm, nothing has changed. He scored 140 pts from a starting price of 5m.

So what, he is 7m this year. Same as Sinclair, who scored 151pts, that everyone is buying. Yes, Sinclair is on peno's but I think Moses must not be written off. Especially if Martinez sticks to the formation he ended with.

However, O'Neill's hunt for a striker is unlikely to stretch to an interest in what would be an intriguing, but hugely controversial, move for Liverpool's unsettled frontman Andy Carroll.
