Gameweek 18 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) kicked off on Friday evening, as Liverpool edged past Leicester City and Brentford beat West Ham United.

We’ve got the key quotes, notes and stats from both matches in our Scout Notes summary.

The numbers you see in this article are from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League match.

It was a night to forget for Wout Faes (£4.5m), whose two own goals handed Liverpool a 2-1 win at Anfield.

The Reds have now won four Premier League games in a row, yet owners of Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) and Darwin Nunez (£9.0m) had to settle for a solitary assist and a combined seven points in Gameweek 18.

The pair served up a whopping 11 shots, including three big chances, but failed to find the net with any of them.

As for Darwin, he hasn’t scored since returning from the World Cup, despite racking up 1.83 xG across his two league outings. However, his interaction with Salah was encouraging and he did at least provide an assist, although owners may now be looking to move him on ahead of Monday’s Gameweek 19 deadline, with fellow forwards Aleksandar Mitrovic (£7.0m) and Kai Havertz (£7.8m) both involved in doubles.

Salah, meanwhile, had a goal ruled out for offside and missed a few good chances, one in particular after an excellent through ball from Darwin.

Elsewhere, Liverpool were vulnerable at the back and missed Fabinho’s (£5.3m) presence in midfield. They were carved open a number of times and lost their clean sheet after just four minutes when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£4.9m) finished past Alisson (£5.5m). As a result, the Reds have kept just four clean sheets in their 16 Premier League games this season, with only five sides keeping fewer.

“We’re here for results and that’s what we’ve done. The early goal wasn’t helpful, we lost balls at the wrong moments when we were too open but we had good spells and scored the two goals, or we forced them to score own goals, and we were much better in the second half, though they still had their moments. We have to take the result momentum but play better.” – Jurgen Klopp

Adding to their worries, Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) and Harvey Elliott (£5.0m) were both taken off injured, with Jurgen Klopp providing an update after full-time.  At this stage, both players are early doubts for Monday’s trip to Brentford, given the tight turnaround.

“Funnily enough, Harvey, before the game, injured Robbo a little bit. In our warm-up game, he hit him with a knee at the hip, so it was a dead leg. He could play but then at one point the muscle closed and he couldn’t play on. Harvey got a knock, which was quite painful, but when you see the situation because it is clear that’s painful, but that’s it, I think.” – Jurgen Klopp on Andrew Robertson and Harvey Elliott

Prior to kick-off, Brendan Rodgers discussed James Maddison (£8.1m), with his knee injury set to be assessed in seven to 10 days. That will likely mean he misses Gameweek 19 and the FA Cup tie at Gillingham.

“They’ll hopefully see some progress over the next week. After seven to 10 days, we’ll see where he’s at in terms of re-joining the group.” – Brendan Rodgers on James Maddison

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold (Gomez 86), Matip, van Dijk, Robertson (Tsimikas 62), Henderson, Elliott (Bajcetic 86), Thiago, Salah, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Keita 62), Darwin

Leicester City XI: Ward, Castagne, Amartey, Faes, Thomas, Ndidi (Tielemans 59), Soumare, Perez (Iheanacho 71), Dewsbury-Hall, Barnes, Daka (Vardy 15)

Brentford cruised to a 2-0 win at West Ham United, but their night ended on a sour note with Ivan Toney (£7.5m) leaving the pitch on a stretcher after landing awkwardly.

Earlier, the 26-year-old had put the Bees ahead after the hosts failed to deal with a throw-in, before setting up Josh Dasilva (£4.2m) just before half-time.

As a result, Toney is now up to 12 league goals for the season – only Erling Haaland (£12.2m) and Harry Kane (£11.6m) have scored more. However, a serious-looking injury paired with a possible betting ban makes him a no-go for FPL managers right now, a real shame given that he is the best value forward in FPL.

“Of course, it didn’t look great, but I’ve also been in this game long enough to know that you never know exactly what it is until it’s been assessed over the following days. Hopefully it’s a minor injury, a minor thing, there’s a good chance for that, but of course it could be worse. We don’t know yet.” – Thomas Frank on Ivan Toney

The impact of Christian Norgaard (£5.3m), plus goalkeeper David Raya (£4.6m), is also worth noting. Since the former returned from injury in Gameweek 16, Brentford have taken seven points from Manchester City (a), Tottenham Hotspur (h) and West Ham (a). Raya, meanwhile, is up to second in the goalkeeper rankings, with his record of 75 saves first among Premier League shot-stoppers.

As for West Ham, they have now lost five consecutive Premier League games.

In Gameweek 18, David Moyes started out with a 3-4-2-1 formation with cheap defenders Vladimir Coufal (£4.1m) and Emerson Palmieri (£4.0m) lining up as wing-backs, before switching to a 4-4-2 in the second half.

The result, however, leaves Moyes on the brink, with just 13 goals scored all season.

“I don’t think it’s unfair, because I think the business we are in means that normally when you go five games where you’ve not won, you can always be under pressure. I totally get that. But you feel bad when you lose one, never mind two, never mind five.

Obviously, that is football, I understand that totally. I only want the best for West Ham because it’s been a great club for me and the club’s done well and we’ve sort of taken it into a little bit better of a place than I think it was before so I’m determined and sort of desperate to keep it there.

I don’t want it to go back down and get dragged back down, so I’m hoping that we can get ourselves away from where we are.” – David Moyes

West Ham United XI: Fabianski, Dawson, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Coufal, Rice, Paqueta (Soucek 82), Emerson (Antonio 64), Bowen, Benrahma, Scamacca

Brentford XI: Raya, Zanka, Pinnock, Mee, Roerslev, Dasilva (Ghoddos 67), Norgaard, Jensen (Janelt 59), Henry, Toney (Jansson 90+5), Mbeumo (Wissa 58)

LOL @ FF. Salah & Robertson rising tonight after flopping, KDB & Foden dropping a few hours before they haul! 😆

      Pre deadline kneejerks

Spend 7 weeks deciding to run KdB over Salah, and to punt on Foden despite xMins concerns, then reverse it all based on 90 mins of action.

Classic FPL. Even amongst many serious players the most important advanced stat is “Last Weeks Score”

I think this is a really poor BB being honest. Fully expect Fulham to score, Almiron against White and Brighton being very good, not sure why you’d choose now.

There's so much value going around right now that I don't think 0.1m matters very much this season. I was so obsessed with using up my full team value before GW17 that it cost me an absolute shed load of points.

Cucu is risky though with the 2nd game of the DGW being so far away. Chilwell is back in training.

Aye that's what I was looking at doing now too. Robinson (4.4) and Diop (4.3) are tempting with their double but I'm leaning Botman (4.4) and just doubling up with Trippier whenever they have a plum fixture.

        A) Wilson + James ------> Azpi + Havertz
        B) Wilson + Darwin ------> Havertz + Mitrovic
        C) Wilson + Darwin + James ------> Havertz + Mitrovic + Azpi (-4)

Not totally sold on the Chelsea double up in defense either so Azpi could be Shaw instead.

I'm not unhappy with him, he puts in, that's something. Could have had a decent haul easily, only inches away a couple of times, and a sublime big chance he gave Salah who wasted it.

        Haaland, Kane, MITROVIC

Yes, but which keeper will you sell?

Downside of selling Ward: benching headache

Downside of selling Ederson: City doubles. This can be addressed by Bueno to Akanji for GW20 with the extra funds though, and allows you to bench Shaw for those two games

Probably Ward and then just play Kepa in 19 and 22. If I lose Ederson I’d have 1.7m in the bank so could even get another MCY attacker next week, but I’m not sure that’s the best idea.

I think Kepa + Sanchez is the best GK combo for the upcoming doubles and even singles. There are BB opportunities coming soon, so it could be nice to get read of the 4.0 deadweight as early as possible

Ederson isn't really earning his FPL price this season, so I'm not sure that'll improve much in his doubles anyway

Yeah I’m not particularly sold on Ederson either, but if nothing else he should play all the games which can’t be said of many MCY players.

Will Akanji play much with Dias, Walker and Ake soon to return? With Laporte and Stones also to consider the CB position looks a minefield.

I’m thinking Ward -> KEPA this week and then assess MCY (and further DGW) options over the next few weeks.

Why does the fact that your players are on different teams make any difference. I hear this a lot and have never understood. If anything, it is a hedge, so a good thing!!

Because you are knowingly capping your returns. If Ward keeps a clean sheet that guaranteed that Mitrovic and Andreas blank (in that match) and if Martinelli returns that guarantees Trippier doesn’t get a clean sheet.

Also it’s not a great hedge, let’s say Arsenal win 1-0 with a Saka goal - then Trips AND Martinelli blank

So you are capping your upside potential more than limiting your downside potential

But if you avoid opposite players and get it the wrong way then that is a double loss! Fair play, we all have different tactics and that is great, but this is one I have never ever followed. I always judge players on individual merits. Anyway, good luck for the season.

In mathematical terms you’d say the returns are negatively correlated ie one player returning makes it less likely another player returns.

If you think the expected returns of each player is high enough to accept the negative correlation then you should still pick them, but they aren’t independent events so you shouldn’t consider them in isolation

Disagree completely with your comments on mathematical correlation. To me they are independent events and I judge them so. But also I don’t want a row so best wishes pal.

Would you not agree Trippiers probability of keeping a clean sheet against Arsenal and Martinellis probability of scoring / assisting against Newcastle are correlated?

Yes I agree. But Tripper is equally likely to keep a clean sheet or Martinelli score irrespective of who is in your team!!! I totally agree it caps your returns but also limits yours losses by the same amount. Mathematically!! A risk taker would avoid this scenario, but risk averse would embrace it. I personally favour the latter, partly due to my risk averse strategy, but also to reduce the stress of bad decisions!! Personal choice.

I agree with much of what you say - and wholeheartedly agree with the stress avoidance point.

However I disagree on one key point - the capping doesn’t cancel out in both directions.

In the Trippier and Martinelli example. You can have lots of events that lead to Trippier conceding and Martinelli blanking but there’s zero scenarios where Martinelli returns AND Trippier keeps a clean sheet (assuming he plays 90 mins which is very likely).

I think this is a good example as if you own both you probably play both because they are still great options, but owning both is less good than the sum of owning each individually

Always a gut punch when your replacement for an injured player immediately gets injured

Very well then, Robbo to Estupiñán after GW19 pressers. Then it's Shaw to Cancelo for GW20, if nothing else(!) arises. Can't afford the straight Robbo to Cancelo switch. I've got Akanji, so there's no rush to double up on the City backline vs Chelsea anyway

So after this coming gameweek, Man Utd have Man City and then Arsenal.

I’ve used one of my FTs to do James to Azpli (ahead of the price changes). I now have the exact change to do Rashford and Martial to Mitro and Mount for a hit. Worth it or just bring in Mitro (for Martial) if he doesn’t get another yellow?

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years

I wouldn't lose Rashford in this form. He's a confidence player, and I think he's much better than Mount as an FPL asset atm

Just Mitro to Martial, for me. Especially to avoid a hit to remove someone who can punish the similar City and Arsenal styles of play on the counter

We also can't ignore the fact that Man Is have Bournemouth in this same DGW, so the Mount hit could bite hard

I understand Martial to Mitro because Mitro is a great FPL asset this season. Mount just isn't, for now

Check the fixture list on any of their players in FPL

Crellin says their first double could be soon, but there's no way to be certain until the announcements start rolling in:

I believe if Man U and 1 of Palace or Leeds don't have FAC R3 replays to play then they could have a double in GW20.
City and Spurs probably won't have a double that same GW if either of them has to have a replay.

If you're getting a defender, ignore this DGW. Nobody from those two sides promises a haul. It's just two more fixtures in which they'll very likely blank (Fulham) or be rotated (Chelsea)

Who to actually get depends on who you have and what your long-term plans are, especially for better upcoming doubles

              Trippier Shaw Akanji White Estupiñán

Then Shaw to Cancelo for GW20. But it's all based on DGWs and fixture rotations

How "Twitter news" can be negative:
Stay away from Mitro he is injured. Well he wasn't and got 15 points.
Toney is on the naughty step. Not a good pick.
James is fit and will have a double. He was still a risk IMO.
Set up possible Arsenal, ManU DGW's via Ben Crelin.

Now we have everyone running to Mitro with 4 yellows hanging over his head.
James got the inevitable injury. A transfer required to another dodgy Chelsea defender.
        No new DGW's so far.
Will the big Wilson sales pay off?
Will KDB sales to Salah pay off?

To be honest, receiving content creator info cost me more than if I had no news at all.
I would not have got Wilson and stuck with Mitro. I would have had Toney, albeit injured now. I would not have had James and ignored yje DGW's, avoiding taking out players I wanted for the long haul. YOU CANNOT BEAT THE FPL SYSTEM.

After site crashes, waiting for last minute news has done more harm than good.

Of course they were correct moves. I did it myself. What I am saying is to sift through misinformation, typically this season, from managers and the press has hindered rather than help. It is not the tool I am complaining about, it is the rubbish we are fed and forums such as this advertise it; and so they should. What I am saying is it worth it and just stick with the basics.

You can always mute content creators if you feel the need to.

Fact is, Toney has a potential long term ban looming. Mitro was a doubt and is still on 4 yellows. James was fit till he got injured again. In all 3 cases the information was right. If you did stock up on Arsenal and United their attackers have delivered immediate returns.

Don't be a hindsight merchant and own your bad luck.

I found Crellin, Legomane & Mikkel Tokvam incredibly helpful in planning for DGWs last year. No way I would have smashed it so well without their info/tools.

Also it was really Silva who put us all off Mitro

I have found Crelin and Co helpful too in the past but I believe sometimes, for whatever reason, the information is coming has foundation but social media popularity has become important too recently. I think James of planet FPL has a good point in this regard.

I have been playing FF for 10 plus years ( Im still rubbish ) however, I think content creators are just another tool as is twitter and this very site. The issues I have is the cognitive bias people have and ANY content provider who calls him/her self an "Expert" ....( Dan of FPL Mate a classic case ).

Your own bias state will seek information that suits your own bias belief and the provider of that information will deliver the same bias, and whilst I believe 95% of content providers try to avoid this it is inventible. Even FPL Raptor who I find hugely enlightening and has a PHD in the field, will fall foul............its human nature.

Best move assuming no further injuries?

        A) Ward -> KEPA (leaves 0.3m)
        B) Ederson -> KEPA (leaves 1.7m)
        C) Save FT
        D) Something else

        Ederson
        Trippier, Gabriel, Shaw
        Kdb, MOUNT, Rashford, ANDREAS
        Haaland, Kane, MITROVIC

        Ward, Martinelli, Patterson, Bueno
        Bank 0.9m, 1FT

Thanks. Think I’m between A) and C). If A) then Kepa covers Ederson’s tough games (19, 20, 22) nicely and gets an extra DGWer. If I could get to Cancelo or there was a Foden on form then B) would make sense I think, but right now there isn’t.

        A. Trossard to Mount
        B. Wilson to Havertz?

Not the worst time to hop off. bre/bha/CHE doesn't really compare that favourably with some doublers. I'm thinking of switching to Kane for a bit

Have 2 FTs and 0.0 ITB

        Kepa
        Cancelo - White - Dalot
        KdB - Mount - Odegaard - Rashford
        Mitrovic - Haaland - Darwin (C)

        Ward - Trippier - Almiron - Bueno

If no news on Dalot, then looking to move to another.
        a) Cash (WOL, LEE, sou, LEI)
        b) Botman (ars, FUL, cry, WHU)
        c) KWP (NFO, eve, AVL, bre)

Probably getting Mitro or Havertz for the dgw, and already have Kepa ANS Cucu.

Also have Andreas, but find it hard to play him over any of Haaland, Kane, Kdb, Almiron, Rashford and Martinelli.

        What are you doing?

I think I don't mind benching Martinelli/Almiron for a doubler given that both defences are so strong & its a tricky game to predict. Maybe a little nagging doubt that it turns into 2-2 / 3-3 thriller

Morning. Early days - but what would you look to do with 2fts and 1.9m? Thanks

        Thinking james to dalot.

And martial / darwin to havertz or mitro

        Kepa
        Cancelo trippier white (james patterson)
        Kdb martinelli rashford andreas (almiron)
        Haaland darwin martial

Would you sell Martial before Bou game? Better to sell Darwin?

Who’s the better choice of Mitro and Kai?

Tough call on who to sell. Martial only seems to play an hour - and only 2 days till that Bournemouth game....

Not sure which striker to bring in. Booking for mitro today makes an easy decision

        2 FT and 1.0 ITB.

        A - KDB & Greenwood > Mount & Mitro
        B - Martial > Mitro and roll 1
        C - Walker > Botman and roll 1

        Kepa
        Gabriel - Trippier - Shaw
        Salah - KDB - Martinelli - Rash - Almiron
        Haaland - Martial
