Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers brace themselves, once again, as reigning champions Manchester City and plucky title challengers Arsenal face off – and play twice – in Double Gameweek 23.

The main event bears the hallmarks of a blockbuster, with its very own master and the apprentice sub-plot, and despite Erling Haaland (£12.2m) appearing as the overwhelming armband favourite, we analyse the latest Premium Members data to solve the captaincy conundrum.

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Erling Haaland returns to the top of the captain poll in Double Gameweek 23 after a short break, backed by a mite over seven-tenths of the total votes cast by users at the time of writing.

No other player has garnered more than 10% of votes at this stage, with Bukayo Saka (£8.3m) currently in second place, backed by just around one in 11 of our users.

Martin Odegaard (£7.0m) occupies third place with 7.4% of the vote, followed by Eddie Nketiah (£6.8m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£12.4m) further back.

DOUBLE GAMEWEEK CANDIDATES

ERLING HAALAND/KEVIN DE BRUYNE/RIYAD MAHREZ

The summer arrival of Erling Haaland was proclaimed by all and sundry as the death of competition, with the realistic expectation that Manchester City’s dominance would be unassailable.

Haaland has certainly brought goals, 25 goals in just 20 Premier League appearances to be exact, but the Norwegian’s ample returns have papered over the cracks as Guardiola’s side struggle to adapt from tiki-taka to target-man.

Three blanks in Haaland’s last five Premier League matches have led to churlish suggestions that the Nordic sharpshooter is slightly out of form – but his recent hat-trick against Wolves is a stark reminder of his potential.

Haaland’s shot volumes are down over the last six matches, with his 15 attempts bettered by 19 other players.

The Norwegian places in the top four for big chances received (10) and expected goals (xG, 3.94) over that same period.

However, four of Haaland’s five blanks this season have arrived away from home in high-pressure games against the following “big six” opposition – Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Above: Erling Haaland rank second best for big chances received (10) over the last six matches

Kevin De Bruyne dropped to the bench against Tottenham Hotspur in City’s last Premier League outing, with tactical reasons cited as justification for the demotion.

De Bruyne is expected to return to the starting line-up against both Aston Villa and Arsenal who, unlike Spurs, typically play a more traditional back-four formation.

The Belgian was sprung for the bench just before the 60th minute against Spurs and created a match-leading three chances, highlighting the playmaker’s potential.

De Bruyne’s 19 chances created, six big chances supplied, and 15 successful crosses all play in the division’s top three over the last six matches – which suggests that returns will come for City’s underperformer.

Furthermore, City’s midfield maestro tops the charts for expected assists (xA, 3.15) and places a very respectable third for non-penalty involvement (NPxGI, 4.04) over that same period.

Riyad Mahrez (£7.7m) has undergone a timely revival as a Fantasy prospect ahead of Manchester City’s Double Gameweek 23 against Aston Villa and Arsenal.

The mercurial Algerian – usually renowned for his unpredictable and unreliable expected minutes – has started six out of seven Premier League matches for Guardiola’s troops since Gameweek 17.

A secure starting role and Mahrez’s natural ability are a potent combination, and City’s winger highlighted his high-ceiling potential in Double Gameweek 20.

Mahrez scored two goals and supplied an assist against Tottenham Hotspur delivering a 17-point haul in the second fixture.

Since the return to domestic action, Mahrez has registered seven attacking returns, netting three times and turning provider on four occasions, and the Algerian’s point tally (46) over that period is just two fewer than Erling Haaland.

The underlying numbers highlight Mahrez’s all-round potential with his nine shots in the box, 15 chances created, and five big chances supplied all placing in the top three among City teammates since Gameweek 17.

Manchester City’s immediate opponents Aston Villa are revitalised under the new stewardship of Unai Emery. Villa are in buoyant form, winning five of Emery’s first eight Premier League matches, but their defensive underlying numbers are a concern.

Villa place in the bottom two over the last six matches for big chances conceded (20) and non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC, 9.88).

Arsenal host City in the second fixture of Double Gameweek 23 and Arteta’s rear-guard will offer a much sterner test.

The Gunners have registered nine clean sheets this Premier League campaign, a total bettered by only Newcastle United (12), but bizarrely only two shut-outs have arrived at the Emirates Stadium.

Over the last six matches, Arteta’s troops rank third-best for shots inside the box conceded (39) but sit around mid-table for big chances conceded (11) and shots on target against (25).

However, the Gunners rank third-best for non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC, 6.11) despite facing Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United over that six-game period.

Normally would never even consider a sideways transfer but have a strong feeling Tomiyasu will start so spending a FT on White -> Gabriel is worth it over rolling for BGW 25...

It's not for a hit but I still got a spare free transfer which I prefer to roll so I have double FT in GW 24 or even GW25.

If 2FT and literally no other changes needed for team, then it would be a free transfer. Otherwise taking that FT may lead to a hit down the line or a missed opportunity down the line etc.

Please don't patronise me. I understand pretty well.

But when we are talking about free transfers – they are free, that is an immutable fact.

The ramifications may lead to hits, which of course cost. That's another matter.

But it is pure fact that free transfers are free, whether you want to talk all around it or not.

I don't like taking a hit transferring my keeper but Ward is stinking up my team. Would you shift to Ramsdale or Ederson for -4? Thinking Ederson at the moment as I'll probably want the third Arsenal spot for an outfield player going forward.

I took my first -4 to swap Ederson out for Kepa. I had Kepa since restart, made a wrong call during DGW20 to swap him out for Ederson who has underwhelmed since.

Ditching him has alowed me to free up a Man City slot and bring in Mahrez for Almiron. I felt good after, and I am looking forward to this weekends game a lot more!

I was around the 8K at DGW 20, and have dropped to 20k + since. Not having Kepa and TC'ing Haaland in 20 over Rashford in 22 have been the major factors in recent red arrows.

My tale of woe. Do with it what you like, but just get Kepa back.

  11. Reasons for keeping Martinelli?
    Arteta
    • 10 Years
    2 years, 11 months ago

I have to admit that I'm reluctant to sell Martinelli, even for free. I keep looking at this double gameweek as his last chance saloon and if it doesn't work out - I'm ready to move on. Do you actually believe that Arteta would drop one of his regular starters one week before the most important game of the season, and start experimenting with another player that basically just joined the club? I don't think so.

In case he blanks twice, plays bad, is replaced with Trossard in 59th minute and dropped for the second match... I will go ahead and buy Odegaard next week without a problem. I can admit mistakes and I can live with that, especially if Saka and Nketiah deliver the goods.

But if he restores his form against Brentford and City, scores some goals and gets assists, it will be absolutely worth the wait. The quality is obviously there and it's not like he didn't have any chances to get attacking returns in the past games. If he steals the show and improves the output, people will want him back.

I always ask myself: "What would be worse? If a player blanks again, or if he explodes right after I sold him?"
    The answer is clear.

The majority view on here is to move him to a better option. I didn't listen to advice on here during the final week of a previous FPL and lost my mini-league by one point. I've upgraded him to Saka.

White has been subbed off many times this season, yet before 60 mins only twice... And the half-time sub was due to an early yellow

If on a WC, maybe. If not, I think the 75-min subs for White actually help his CS chances

I agree with this. He was playing all games even when Tomiyasu was playing also, and breaking up what's been such an effective backline at such a critical point in the season for them seems so unlikely. It would only be the Gabriel goal threat which would sway me to switch but those goals are quite rare

For me, I'm not saying or thinking Martinelli will get dropped. His xMins have reduced with Trossard in the team. Also it's a long term view in getting a nailed Arsenal asset and feel this GW is a good opportunity to make the move.

Engaged fpl managers usually do transfers with a few gwks in mind...so question really is, will the Martinelli replacement outscore him in the long run.
In isolation, One could similarly argue...is a March to Mitoma transfer too sideways.

Same boat as you. I actually think Arteta is tactically a bit naive though and I think he would be happy playing Trossard in one of the games, yes. I think he will justify it with some hippy stuff like trust whilst holding hands in a circle. I am also keeping to see how Martinelli fares in the last chance saloon but I am not as confident as you that he will play both.

Not that well tbh. Think that was more of a specific need for Brighton in the absence of Welbeck, but he's much better on the left than as false 9

      • 16 Years

Martinelli has been performing fine on an individual level, but tactically he's missing Jesus which is the main reason for his drop in output. With Jesus naturally drifting wide it was a. Occupying defenders so that they can't double up on Martinelli and b. Creating space centrally for him to run into.

Add into that the increased rotation threat from Trossard and personally I'd make the sideways move to Odegaard or Saka.

I think it's quite clear that keeping him does not provide managers with the best possible chance of a successful outcome compared to the rivals for his position, FPL-speaking, which are Saka and to a lesser extent Odegaard - also Nketiah if you factor in the three-player/club limit.

The problem for most of us is that a transfer now pretty much guarantees a -4 (not or in the next week or two), or the decision to FH in what might not be the best GW to do so (25). Is it worth taking a -4 to remove a player who could quite easily outscore anyone else in the gameweek? it's a much harder decision and may well come down to a coin toss.

I think you have a valid point, however whilst you might ask yourself...."what would be worse..." you could also be asking these questions

"Do I think Martinelli to Saka will pay itself back, by 4 points or more back over the next 3 or 4 gameweeks". (I think this is a yes as there are 5 games in 3 weeks and Saka has the following advantagees
      - Is on Pens (as far as we know)
      - Underlying non pen Xg per 90 data almost the same as Martinelli
      - Higher expected minutes than Martinelli

"Week 23 - He suddenly isn't a minutes risk, gets plenty of gametime and explodes vs he blanks again, gets subbed early and Saka explodes"... I'd be more annoyed if the latter happened as I had all the indications and yet didn't act".

FWIW I don't think it is a clear and obvious decision either way, and it does depend on what else you have going on for your team. But for me, I thought it was worth the switch up.

Don’t we think there’s gonna be some rotation for several of the Arsenal players during this period, not only Martinelli? I think we’re maybe a little bit blinded by his limited minutes. He has actually better underlying stats than Saka and Odegaard despite being taken off early. If Saka and Ode are getting rested for the odd game, Martinelli will probably be the best pick or what?

    Current Team, 1FT, 0.9 ITB
    Grappling with the options below

    Pope
    Saliba* Martínez Trippier
    Bruno KDB* Rashford Martinelli*
    Kane Haaland(TC)* Gnonto
    (Ward Andreas Bueno Thomas)

    A) Martinelli to Odegaard for free
    B) Bruno to Saka for free
    C) Bruno to Saka, Martinelli to Odegaard (-4)

Don't like losing Bruno in such good form but Saka has 5 games in 3, Bruno has 2 games in same period.

I wouldn't. Bruno is back at CAM with Sabitzer starting, and it reflected in his stats vs Leeds

Bruno will blank in 25 so you will have to move him out anyways. Mahrez is likely to cover up the hit points because of DGW.

    5 DGW players.

    OR

    B) Bruno to Mahrez and Gnonto to Nketiah -4.
    6 DGW players.

I think if I was to get any city mid it would be Grealish as he feels more secure and is still putting in good numbers but I think I’d rather hold Bruno for the next couple

Saliba > Gabriel, far higher attacking stats than any other Arsenal defender... Schar as other one for back 3 IMO, probs. 6 points at least vs Bournemouth. Shaw if not.

On a FH, I'll take Zinch over Saliba and definitely improve the bench (Mitoma over Andreas, for starters) in case of unpredictable surprises. There is no penalty in FPL for benched points

      Estupinan for me too

    A) Bruno to Mahrez
    B) Shaw to Lewis
    C) Shaw and Bruno to Lewis and De Bruyne for -4 (I'm really considering this, since i want to get rid of both of them anyway before GW25, and then on GW25 I can switch De Bruyne to Salah for the double)
    D) Roll

    Cheers

I think offload Shaw - fair enough - but Bruno has 2 fixtures against sides that play open football and will get a lot of chances (plus a possible penalty shout over the 2 games). Bruno should have hauled the other night against Leeds. Was very unlucky not to.

Yeah I have also been thinking that, and moving Bruno/De Bruyne to Salah anyway for GW25 is what is stopping me. But essentially the only question that should matter is 'Is De Bruyne gonna outscore Bruno by 4 or more points in the next 2 GWs'?

Going to bring in Saka but question is how to do it?
    A) Andreas > Saka which means I need to bench 1 of Bamford.or.Gnonto this week and losing Mr Reliable 1st bench.
    B) Fernandes > Saka means dropping an in form player but helps with BGW25

  26. donbagino

Schar or Shaw --> Gabriel (-4).
I consider taking a hit, cause with my current defence: Shaw, Trippier, Schar, Bueno, Petterson there are no BGW25.
So sooner or later I will have to take a hit or 2.
