Our latest Members article series, reviving an old Scout strand called Tales of the Expected, explores the expected goals (xG) data from the last six matches, assessing each side from an attacking and defensive perspective.

In addition, we’ll also check out the form players on show, asking if their recent output is sustainable.

Having last looked at these tables after Gameweek 21, it’s time to revisit them again, armed with the latest stats from our Members Area.

TEAMS

XG: LAST SIX MATCHES

Manchester City and Brighton and Hove Albion are the league’s two most potent attacks right now, leading the field for xG and actual goals scored. Both sides have created an abundance of chances in their last six matches, averaging over 2.00 xG per game, which is hugely impressive.

Brentford extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. They have now racked up a whopping nine big chances across their two away matches at Arsenal and Man City this season. Ivan Toney (£7.6m) has found the net on both occasions, as The Bees remain in the hunt for a top-six finish.

Their home form has been particularly impressive, having won six and drawn four of their 11 matches, averaging 1.66 xG per game. It’s the foundation of their stellar season, with home games against Crystal Palace and Fulham to come before they ‘double’ in Gameweek 27.

Newcastle United (-6.17 xG delta), Liverpool (-5.98) and Chelsea (-5.24) are the three biggest xG underachievers in the sample and need to become more clinical. The Magpies have been in a real finishing slump since the restart, scoring just six times in seven league games from 11.07 xG.

Leicester City, meanwhile, have served up two of their best attacking displays of the season in Gameweeks 22/23, putting eight goals past Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur. That’s coincided with Tete’s (£5.5m) arrival, which has freed James Maddison (£8.0m) up to play through the middle behind the impressive Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.1m).

As for Leicester’s opponents last weekend, Spurs, their attacking process has been poor, with an improving West Ham United outfit up next on Sunday. The Hammers are now unbeaten in three league games, with their defence looking solid (see below). David Moyes has mostly used a more conservative shape (a wing-back system) in the last month, which perhaps bodes well for future clean sheets.

Finally, Crystal Palace are without a goal from open play in the above sample, averaging just 0.79 xG per game. They next face Brentford, Liverpool and Aston Villa.

    Thoughts on this plan with 2 fts?

    gw24 - kane > felix
    gw25 - bruno patterson > salah kilman 2 fts

      Looks decent although I'd be wary of losing Kane, despite Spurs' issues he's still consistent and he loves a derby

        He's my only route to salah for the dgw though, might have to take the risk. Felix against Sou also a decent fixture.

    Best route here?

    (A)
    24: Save FT
    25: Patterson & KDB -> Tark & Salah
    => 10 starters & 6 DGWers

    (B)
    24: Martinelli & Kane -> Saka & Felix (-4) [bench Mitro]
    25: Shaw & KDB -> TAA & Salah (-4)
    => 11 starters & 7 DGWers

        What about C with Estupinan instead of Tark? One less starter/DGWer in 25 but an extra one in 27, and it means I get to keep Kane. Felix -> Toney in 27 also.

    Shaw, White, Akanji
    Rash, Bruno, Martinelli, Mitoma
    Kane, Haaland, Nketiah

    Ward, Trippier, Andreas, Bueno

        They were very good against them at the Emirates last season. Dubious penalty for City, moment of madness from Gabriel and a late goal snatched defeat from the jaws of victory but that was the first time in a while I had seen a City side in that form being outfought in that manner

          I've had him since GW20, booting Mitro after that DGW

          Happy to keep him until he becomes Felix in BGW28. Things will get interesting if the Leicester game isn't postponed, as there's a likely DGW29 anyway

          A whole lot that we won't know until GW26

          For the yellow cards: I think he's aware of that, especially with how he chose to carry out that jersey celebration in the last game. Still a reason to get someone else (Felix, Watkins) instead of buying him until GW27, I agree

    The xGC stats in this article show that even the best defences in the league should have conceded close to once per match over their last 6 matches

    That feels higher than normal, but I haven't checked that

    City's matched their xGC with goals conceded, while Newcastle has similar xGC but much fewer goals conceded. I guess that's where Pope vs Ederson comes in

      Is it worth taking a -4 hit to bring in a player for 25 for a full starting 11?

      I have yet to take a hit this season.

          I would pay Scout £50 so I could get an extra paragraph per article of otherwise free stats.

          I would then pay Scout £60 for three phone calls so I could speak to a nerd who will repeat the same articles and additional paragraphs to me verbally.

          Also, gamble more and delete anyone with a sense of humor and/or personality.

              Depends on what the move would be? I wouldn't do it just for the sake of getting 11.

            Hi guys, sorry if this has been discussed, but I haven't seen it....

            I'm starting to look at when to play my remaining chips. The two main options I'm considering are:
            1) FH25 and WC27 (BB TBC)
            2) WC27 and FH 28 (BB TBC)

            The first option is actually looking like the best one, for my team.
            Is anyone considering anything else?

              Really it's all team dependent. For example, for my team I can get to 9 players for BGW25 with no hits and (as below) can chance a hit for 10 but I might even have someone already that may feature enough to avoid that. I've got double Brighton already for DGW27 and will likely only want maybe one more for that so I don't need to use lots of transfers for that week, and at the moment I'm actually healthy enough for BGW28 (6 players definitely and likely to have at least 1 more) so I think I'm going to try hold onto FH for a double. But I've seen completely different situations above. WC will actually be the biggest question for me as I have no real window that I'm aiming for right now. I may just wait until the big double comes and see how I am

            What option here is best for BGW25?

            A) Keep Cash knowing he's pretty much guaranteed to sub on for 1pt / tiny chance of a start
            B) Keep Patterson and hope he's fit enough for a couple of sub apps for 2pts / maybe fit to start the second game, but also possible he may end up playing no part
            C) Take a hit and just get rid of both and bring in Tark/Coady

            Gut-wrenching dilemma, I know

              Not much to gain, or to lose, by hitting out those 1pt-ers for DGW defenders. Except that if you get somone just to cover 25/8 they may end up lingering while you focus transfers on DGW29. Not sure of your chip plan but for me I'd rather not use FTs just for 2 week punts on defenders right now. Even my backline for 25 looks a bit flaky - Ake, Moreno & probably James

                Cheers mate, yeah fair points. I will likely still go with Kilman as I was eyeing him or Semedo up before the double was announced, will be benched a few times no doubt but think I may be happy to keep afterwards. Patterson getting 2pts may honestly not be far off what Everton starters get over 2 games is what I'm thinking so probably just getting that would be enough

            Post out of pure boredom here...

            Kepa
            Kilman Trip Gabriel
            KdB Rash Saka Ode Mitoma
            Haaland Kane
            Ward Gnonto Tark Tete
            1ft 0.6itb

            Play Kilman (BOU) or Tark (LEE)?
            Plan is to save and do KdB to Salah gw25, and what else with 2ft?

                Will take an assist, considering he can't do anything right on the pitch in the last few games

              He looked better at the weekend but he was given a lot more room by Villa than I expect Arsenal will allow. Also have a sneaky feeling that Alvarez may be in with a shout for starting over him given his pressing capabilities. I'm just very unsure with KDB at the minute

                Thought he was out of sorts at the weekend. So many misplaced passes/crosses.
                For me it's a sell and return to him in the future when form picks up.

            Still questioning myself whether it was a bad idea to play perraud over shaw this week. Probably but the stats above suggest it wasn't clear cut.

            Still can't believe Southampton conceded to a 10 man wolves

              I benched Shaw too but would have played him over Perraud. Can't trust Southampton at the moment regardless of fixtures

                Yes you are probably right. Just trying to be a bit too clever. Annoying because I'd be on a nice green arrow with the extra 10 points
