Sergio Aguero runs amok as Man City see off a Malaysia XI 3-1. A dazzling solo goal and a couple of assists served Fantasy managers a devastating reminder of his current form, with Carlos Tevez and Adam Johnson also finding the net. Scans reveal Gareth Bale looks to have escaped serious injury after Charlie Adam’s challenge in Spurs’ friendly with Liverpool last Saturday:

Malaysia XI 1 Man City 3
After Vincent Kompany flew home on Sunday to be treated for a calf problem, Roberto Mancini reshuffled his defensive options for yesterday’s match with a Malaysia XI. City kept faith in their new 3-5-2 formation once again and, with Pablo Zabaleta slotting into the back-three – Adam Johnson was handed a rare starting role on the right flank, Yaya Toure maintained his attacking central midfield role, while Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez started up front once again.

As City’s fitness increases with every passing game, Aguero’s influence continues to grow. Yesterday, he produced a masterclass and played a part in all three of his side’s goals – a clear indication of his menace ahead of the new season. Within the first 10 minutes he had a goal disallowed for offside and also hit the bar before a fantastic solo effort opened the scoring on 17 minutes; dancing round four opposition defenders, the Argentine found the net after executing a deft chip over the keeper to grab his second in the past three games.

City went in at the break one up but Aguero then turned creator just three minutes into the second-half, teeing up Tevez for the second. Only four minutes later, the former Atletico Madrid was at it again – this time a superb chip found Johnson inside the box and the winger wrong-footed the keeper to notch City’s third. Roberto Mancini made six changes as the game progressed and, much to the home side’s relief, withdrew Aguero after 70 minutes; the hosts’ late consolation failed to take the shine off a strong display from the Premier League champions, who have now won three in a row and conceded a single goal in their last four matches.

Post-match, Mancini revealed that Kompany’s calf problem is “nothing serious”, while going on to praise the performances of his front pair ahead of the new season, saying:

We were confident two weeks ago and I’m even more confident today. Sergio played very well and his partnership with Carlos has continued from last season. They scored a goal each today which is good. Hopefully we can continue his good form in the coming season.

Man City Starting XI: Pantilimon (Johansen 75); Savic, K Toure (Boyata 76), Zabaleta; A Johnson, Razak, Y Toure (Scapuzzi 58), Suarez (Evans 64) , Kolarov; Tevez (Mancini 76), Aguero (Lopes 70)

In Other News…
Reports in the Mail suggest Gareth Bale has escaped serious injury after Charlie Adam’s tackle in Spurs’ goalless draw with Liverpool on Saturday. The Welshman has returned to light training after scans allayed fears of a possible lengthy absence ahead of the new season – Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas played down the suggestion of the matter being reported to the FA but once again called for Adam to make an apology:

Needless to say, we are extremely relieved Gareth has not been seriously injured. There is previous history between the two players on the challenge that was done I think three years ago. Will we take it any further? We are discussing it within the club but in my opinion, the matter is dealt. But it would be extremely human for Charlie to come out with an apology. But you can’t force people to say anything and we will have to wait and see.

Slight reduction in the number of Chelsea midfielders: Kevin de Bruyne is now definitely moving to Werder Bremen on a one-year loan deal after negotiations were successfully completed yesterday in London. The medical has been passed, De Bruyne will be officially unveiled by Bremen tomorrow and will train with his new team-mates on Thursday.

Werder didn't manage to negotiate an option to purchase the player at the end of the loan period.

The defence is weak to the untrained eye, however if you examine closely you will notice that the gk is in a solid team and will get enough save points to justify selection. Hughes has only really 2 troubling fixtures in 10, Warnock has just 2/3 in 10, Heitinga has just 3 and Cole simply plays for Chelsea.

Some thought on Everton - I predict (hope) they'll be much faster out of the gates this year. Maybe. Possibly... The team did well after Christmas for 5 reasons (not just, contrary to popular belief, because of Jelavic)

    1. Pienaar - losing Arteta last season was a huge blow (and one of the key reasons for the early dip in form) - without a creative force we looked toothless. Pienaar links very well with Baines and they are as good a left sided partnership as you'll see in the league.

    3. Gibson - a strategic move and as key to Everton's recent form as any other in the team. bossing midfield defensively, good passing and tackling. Got a good boot on him too - expect an early price rise I think (although not a good fantasy prospect in the current role).

    3. Jelavic - not since Duncan Ferguson or Super Kev have Everton had an out an out target man.

    4. Stability - we started last season and the season before with both injuries and players sold off. This season we've only served to bolster attacking positions and players are all looking sharp for a return - including Rodwell the underrated Anichebe (his records speak for itself). Everton have one of the most stable teams in the league in some respects and could be a strong reason for some early form. (Cahill's timely move can only help Rodwell, Naismith, Osman, Fellaiani cement roles).

    5. Moyes. Not really much to say. We keep Moyes we do well.

I think the generally accepted use of > is as an arrow. It's an illustration of a proposed action, not an opinion.

Also, it's spelt "implies". Pedantic remarks with spelling errors make you look very foolish.

      My Team so far....

      Mignolet, Schwarzer

      Lescott, Williams, Cuellar, Hughes, McCartney

      Bale, Toure, ????, McClean, Noble

      Aguerro ???? Petric/Graham

Keepers: Mignolet and Scwarzer rotate really well for the first 9 weeks and then I can stick in DDG when the fixtures improve. First nine are NOR, RDG, whm, WBA, whm, WIG, sou, AST.

Defence: Always play Lescott, Fulham and Sunderland rotate well and Swansea have reasonable fixtures till week 9. Trying to predict which 4m defender will sit on my bench and go up in value is tricky but WHM have the best fixtures so may keep clean sheets.

Mid: Tottenham's great fixtures mean Bale if fit is a must, Toure should do well - could change to Kagawa. This assumes Dempsey moves, if he's at Fulham a shuffle is in order.

      Att: Explains itself.

????'s Torres and Ramires week 1, to change to one of the following...
      Valencia and Adebayer
      Pienaar and Rooney

      How am I doing??

Snevitz, very well IMO. Really like it, it's very similar to may way of thinking, although I have been factoring in DDG from GW2 (Feddy RDG for GW1). I'm also toying with Roo from the off, Hazard over Bale GW1. Bring Bale in GW2 and beyond to get CHE DGW, then TOT good fixs.

Pienaar speak sfor himself although I quite fancy Fellaini and same price. But concerned about EVE slow starts. Main diff is Ivano with Joleon GW1 for the DGW. But I like the Cuellar.Colo rotation with perhaps Rangel angle.

        Hmm.

I dunno about Koscielny, but I can see Arteta gaining a bit of popularity as we get closer to kickoff, he's a very tempting price given that he'll presumably now be on all or at least most of the dead balls.

Defensive strategy seems to come down to this: (a) two big hitters and 3 player rotation or (b) one big hitter and 2x2 rotation.

      Foster | Bego
      Ivan | LESCOTT | Cuellar | DEMEL | CYLNE

      or

      Foster | Bego
