Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa means that it is now just one clean sheet in 10 matches for Newcastle United.

The Magpies were the division’s leading side for shut-outs before Gameweek 22 but have since been overtaken by Manchester United, although Eddie Howe’s troops have still conceded fewer goals than any other Premier League team.

Most active Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will count Kieran Trippier (£6.2m) amongst their number, while many of us own a second (or third!) representative of the Newcastle backline, too.

With that in mind, we thought it would be worth a deeper look at the Magpies’ defence to see if there is any cause for concern.

GAMEWEEKS 22-24: EYES OFF THE BALL?

Newcastle embarked on a winless run ahead of their EFL Cup final appearance in late February, conceding goals to struggling Bournemouth and West Ham United before their 10 men were defeated by Liverpool.

They were bossed by the Cherries and the Hammers during periods of those games, while the Reds were 2-0 up even before Nick Pope (£5.4m) saw red.

Eddie Howe denied it at the time but since that trip to Wembley, the Magpies’ head coach has admitted that the mid-season prospect of silverware was a distraction.

“The cup final, as much as we didn’t want it to be, was a big distraction for us.

“Not so much for me because I’m preparing for a game – all games you prepare for are very similar processes.

“But for the players, I’m sure their lives, their families, every time they went outside the door it was hitting them in the face that it the cup final was the focus. That can’t help but just interfere with your normal train of thought.

“That’s gone now and we’re back to our league form and we want to attack everything and finish as high as we can.” – Eddie Howe, speaking in early March

Anyone not having Trippier on FH?

I think I'm going without, having bottled selling him last week and regretting it.

Who do you reckon, if already owning 3x ARS attack & 2x LIV attack? Palace CBs?

If I decide to get White, Trippier could get nudged out.

I think most are going villa for 3rd choice , not convince over doubling up on palace as I’ve gone Johnstone in goal. But think it’s a coin toss like most of the 50/50 choices. This week to many good options to go for making you doubt your are picks .
Especially with the number of fh teams being posted .

Same here currently on White can’t really see a better pick , I know they haven’t kept many clean sheets lately but don’t want to double up pool def or villa prefer to play the odds a bit

Hasn't really been a consideration for me. Not that I don't think a clean sheet is possible (I actually think Newcastle could put Spurs to the sword, especially after being beaten in the manner that they were by Villa), but no matter how poor Spurs are they still manage to score quite often. If I knee which of Isak or Wilson would start I'd definitely get one of them but I'm not sure how much more I'll be playing Trippier this season

I genuinely had not considered putting him in ... so yeah! I'd be surprised if I went there if it hadn't even crossed my mind.

It's a nice one-week opportunity to go against ownership without having to use a transfer getting rid of someone who could 'explode'.

I already have 10 outfield players and I started thinking about all the possible transfers. Arrizabalaga (BRE ars bou NFO mci mun NEW) to Alisson (NFO whu TOT FUL BRE lei AVL sou) is one of those.

Kepa served me well, but I feel like it's time to move on. I really don't see a lot of clean sheets for Chelsea in their remaining matches and I don't expect them to tighten up at the back. Then again, Liverpool are still hunting down that 4th place and will probably grind out a few 1:0 or 2:0 wins. Their home record is way better and 5 ouf of the last 8 games are at Anfield.

I can count on Steele in DGW36/37 and still gain some points in between with Becker in goal.

And of course I thought about the others. But some aren't even playing this weekend, others have tough or mixed fixtures, and the ship has sailed for a few of them. In my opinion, Alisson looks good on paper and is an underrated option for the run-in.

As a non-FH32, I'm likely doing Kepa->Allisson. I still have a WC/BB so have an out if something really weird happens in the next couple.

What I'm really toying with is doing Bueno->Konate for a -4. If I'm taking a hit, gaining a doubler in 34 seems smart. But what do I know.

    Question about Custom Stats Tables:

I have created a table for xGI, and included an exclusion criteria of "must have at least 1 start" and yet some players like Dominic Calvert Lewin and Samuel Edozie are appearing in the table, implying that this criteria isn't being applied properly. I've checked it over and can't see that I've made a mistake.

It's a simple thing for me to double-check myself but it makes me a little concerned that not all data is being displayed as requested in other areas maybe.

    Any thoughts?

Should specify it's filtered by last four matches, so neither of those players should be appearing.

Hey Tozier! That filter is for a player's last four matches, rather than the team in question. So, for example, DCL's last four apps in GW19-22 will be what are showing.

    Value: 98.7
    ITB: 3.1

    Raya
    Pinnock Gabriel Trippier Botman Toti
    Saka Bruno Andreas
    Kane Watkins

    Subs: Kepa, Haaland, March, Mitoma
    Planning to use FH later
Now I need Salah. If i do Fernandes to Salah, which was my plan but I fall 0.2 short.

    Raya (Kepa)
    Chilly, Shaw, Trippier, Botman, Mee
    Rash, Mitoma, MacA, Maddison, Saka
    Haaland, Watkins, Kane

    2 FT, 1.5 itb

Bad planning because of having "a life". Original plan was to FH this week, but not happy about losing 1 FT. Another thing is that I don't fully trust Shaw and Rashford when MU has this injury crisis. So now I am considering FH 34 and trying to manage this weekend hiding behind the sofa. I can't get Salah easily without selling Haaland. What's the verdict, FH or trying to get 10-11 eleven starters?

Since you can't get Salah, and buying Martinelli isn't really ideal at this point, what would you be looking at? Chilwell & Maddison - Trent & a Palace mid? Think I would just play the FH still, unless you feel your optimal GW34 team is too far out of reach now

        • 4 Years

You could still do Kane & Maddison - Salah & someone for free. And then a hit for Chilwell - Trent would be more than justifiable

Thx. Besides FH 34 strategy there could be huge upside with FH 37/38. Some teams are on the beach after relegation and there could be monster scores for some home teams.

Yes. Or sell Haaland instead of Kane now. That would give me for -4 following starting XI:

          Raya
          TAA, Trippier, Botman, Mee
          C Salah, Maddison, Saka
          Watkins, Kane, Solanke

I don't think it's too far away from FH template, even though certainly not optimal. Perhaps about 15 expected points(?)

So as a result of wildcards I have Ederson and Kepa as my GKs.

Based on the blank and remaining fixtures I'm going to ditch Kepa. Looking at Man City's fixtures I would probably happily start Ederson every week for the last five GWs of the season so I'm only really looking for a GK for this weekend and next. Alisson, Pope, Martinez and Sa probably a bit pricey for me and Raya, Pickford, Fabianski, Bazunu, Lloris, Ramsdale and Navas all have at least one awful fixtures. Lob on Steele and De Gea who have blanks that leaves me with the following six to get in as a replacement - Johnstone, Iversen, Neto, Leno and Meslier. Johnstone seems like the only "form" pick going, while Iversen is "best of the rest" just as he's cheapest, any case for any of the other three?

    How is this FH looking?
    Alisson, Johnstone
TAA, Trippier, Moreno, (Guehi, Neco W)
    Salah, Saka, Martinelli, Eze (Andreas)
    Kane, Jesus, Watkins

    FH team

    Johnstone
    Trent Trippier Moreno
    Salah Saka Martinelli Eze
    Watkins Jesus Jota

    (Iversen Son Toti Williams)

    Unsure on
    Son or Eze?
Any better option than Trippier? Besides from Arsenal/Pool

I've somehow got a top 900 rank currently. Can I get away with saving my FH? If so any transfer suggestions?

For anyone who isn't going to own Salah this week -

Who are you going to captain?

I feel like Arsenal will be the goto, so most likely martinelli

The answer I believe is Newcastle have been worked out now. It generally takes the clubs analysts a good while to dig into specific teams especially when they have changed their style of play.

I think earlier in the season teams were playing Newcastle based on their previous form or history in the league. However we are now seeing teams set up against them defensively as they would do a top 6 side and defensively they seem to have worked out where the weak spots lie.

It will be tough for Newcastle to sustain what they have previously done but I definitely think it’s no longer a real surprise when teams face Newcastle now

I partly disagree. Individual errors leading to a conceded goal have been huge factor lately, (at least according to article).

Can anyone advice me wat to do here. Was all set to fh 34 but now having doubts . .

    Raya

    Zinchenko*/Mee/Tripp

    Saka/Eze/Andreas

    Toney/Kane

    [Kepa/haaland/mitoma/grealish/
    Chilwell/estupian]

Maybe Zinc to Moreno, or Chilwell to taa, even Salah for saka but maybe should wait till 34 for Salah and play Saka. Idk. .
