Stewart Downing picks up the plaudits with a brilliant match-winner as Liverpool record a 1-0 victory in Belarus. Sir Alex Ferguson reveals Nemanja Vidic is ready to return for United’s remaining friendlies, while Chris Brunt admits he is struggling for fitness in time for the new season after picking up a calf problem:

FC Gomel 0 Liverpool 1
Brendan Rodgers chalked up a win and a clean sheet on his competitive debut as Liverpool boss last night. The former Swansea manager named a strong lineup for the Europa League third round qualifier, handing Steven Gerrard a role as the most advanced midfielder, while Fabio Borini led the line with Joe Cole and Stewart Downing on the flanks. Borini and Glen Johnson both had chances before Cole was withdrawn midway through the first-half after picking up a hamstring problem, but it’s fair to say Liverpool were lucky to go in level at half-time after their hosts spurned plenty of opportunities to break the deadlock. Martin Kelly and Lucas came on as subs in the second 45, with the latter continuing his comeback from a knee injury, though the Reds continued to lead a charmed life as Gomel spurning chance after chance. Stewart Downing eventually made the home side pay for their profligacy by firing home a superb 25-yard effort for the only goal of the game on 67 minutes – Borini had a chance to double the Reds’ lead and although he fluffed his lines, Rodgers’ men kept possession well to see out the victory.

Liverpool Starting XI: Jones; Johnson (Kelly 46), Carragher, Skrtel, Enrique; Henderson (Lucas), Spearing, Gerrard; Downing, Borini, Cole (Sterling 22)

The Liverpool centre-halves made the headlines for various reasons last night, Jamie Carragher marked his 700th game for the club, while Martin Skrtel’s display at the back earned him man of the match but the main talking point surrounded Daniel Agger. Initial reports suggested the Dane was absent for the 1-0 win due to a knock but – with Barcelona and Man City both rumoured to be eying up a move – the player’s agent was somewhat cryptic, going on to say:

He is not injured in any way. Only the club and the manager can answer to why he is not in the squad. But the reports of Agger handing in a transfer request are purely nonsense. He is very happy at Liverpool.

In Other News…
Only a couple of weeks ago, Sir Alex Ferguson had doubted whether Nemanja Vidic would be ready in time for the new season but yesterday the United boss revealed his skipper is well on the road to recovery and will feature in the club’s three upcoming friendlies. With Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling still unavailable, Vidic’s return is a timely boost for United’s backline ahead of their opener with Everton on Monday August 20, though Ferguson also hinted that Phil Jones could get the nod at right-back, due to the fact that Rafael is still involved in the Olympics with Brazil:

Chris Smalling is out for 10 weeks with his metatarsal operation and Jonny Evans is still just in light training. They’re big losses at the moment and they will miss the start of the season. Rafael is away [on international duty with Brazil at the Olympics] and Fabio is away on loan so there are four defensive players that we don’t have for the back four positions. We do have Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, though. That will be the back four on tour. Hopefully we don’t get any more injuries as it would leave me a bit short.

Chris Brunt has admitted he is struggling to make the start of the season for West Brom. The Irishman has failed to feature in the club’s recent friendlies due to a calf problem and with just over two weeks until the new campaign kicks off, is yet to return to full training. Speaking to the press yesterday, the Baggies midfielder conceded:

I’ve had a couple of decent days this week and I’m hoping if everything goes alright I’ll be back in full training next week. It’s really frustrating because I’ve missed out on a lot of fitness work as well. Also, I haven’t played any football yet – other than the few training sessions I got involved in. The nature of the injury means it’s difficult for me to run on it, which is a bit of a nightmare. If I want to be involved against Liverpool I’m going to have to play some football.

This Dawson thing is class FFS see what you want to see.
Yes it would be good to get Dawson is he was 5.0 but it's pre-season friendlies, he's getting back up to fitness, and we haven't put out a full strength side yet.
No way AVB is leaving Kaboul on the bench all season after last year. All it seems to me is that both will be a rotation risk (which is reflected in their price).

I know you weren't saying he was nailed on or anything.
Just been annoying me people saying that he IS captain and therefore nailed on when in fact AVB said he's a strong consideration for captain and being captain doesn't really nail you on anyway.

            Not one of you know.

            You are all just guessing.

If you want to take a risk, put Dawson in, if he doesnt start as many games as you wish, transfer him out for someone else.

United tend to rotate their defenders a bit more - Ferdinand, Jones, Smalling, Evans and Rafael will all be in and out of the team. I presume this accounts for their prices.

Even De Gea may see his game time suffer at times due to Lindegaard.

Vidic, if fully fit, will be nailed on, as will Evra if we fail to buy another left back.

I know what you mean. Two years ago Boselli, last year I started by tripling on Wigan (why, why, why?). But third time's the charm! 😉

Seriously though, they've found a system that works for them. Before they changed system they picked up 16 points in 24 games, after it was 27 points from 14. I'm not saying they'll keep THAT form up, but I don't expect them to be thier usual early season clusterf**k of a team.

        Lucas = more clean sheets.
Glen Johnson = attacking and the BP system LOVES him. Was third for defensive BPs behind Terry and Baines and with 800-1000 minutes less on the clock.

        I was also semi-joking.

I like the BP back up there, I didn't know that. Lucas will mean a couple more clean sheets but as many tackles as he makes, it doesn't bring down Johnson's 6.5 😕 Would much rather Lescott!

I'm thinking that the complete system overhaul that is the Rodgers approach makes previous cleanie performance irrelevant. Obviously the result last night was promising but read the article and it's clear that it was more about the opposition wasting chances than Pool shutting them out. And we're not talking about a quality side here.

      Wait and see.

Im contemplating doubling on Newcastle and Sunderland Defence -

    Mignolet Krul
    Cuellar Collo

My reason being that i dont 100% trust DDG and I think Friedel will be replaced before the transfer deadline.

I am thinking of experimenting with a super balanced defence myself rather than the two big hitters and three rotators

I know but I have to sacrifice somewhere and rotation is great. If Steklenburg signs for Spurs I will find 0.5 for him and Fed hopefully.

I do not trust DDG playing all games meaning you need 4.5 keeper to rotate. An extra 0.5 million gets you Hart and a bench warmer then you do not have to worry about rotation.

GW1 punt as I don´t want him in my team for the future, main reason is also everyone is going for Pogrebniak wich will hand him very high percentage of ownage, and if other transfers are needde in GW2 will be stuck with a player that at his actual price is difficult to trade, even more if his price drops like a stone (wich will certainly happen come GW2).

KoL. I totally forgot to give you any tips about Sweden. Did you have a good time regardless? I'm really sorry about that.

I think his fixtures are decent for a player in that bracket, you'll easily know in which two out the four first games to play him and he does have some quality. Think he got 15 assists and 10 goals last season (or similar), that's pretty great.

Good be bad news for Theo &/or Ox.

This could also mean that Gervinho could play up front for the first few games, as the 2 new strikers wont start the season (confirmed by Wenger).

Or Theo could play up front.

Gervinho at 7.5m & a midfielder playing as a striker, MUST HAVE!!

Is this the same RVP that isnt training with the first team?

The same RVP that said he is leaving?

        Chamakh? Are you serious?

          in case u didnt know

rvp IS training with the first team and WILL travel with the squad to germany for a friendly

chamkah is still better than gervs or walcott when it comes to playing up top on your own

Chamakh is a good player. He scored the goals while RVP was injured 2 seasons ago.

RVP is indeed training with the first team and it's not a foregone conclusion that he'll leave this month.

Those internet statements were his agent's machinations anyway.

A or B guise? This trade is currently sat in my players in and out:

    A) Rafael, Valencia, Aguero, Maloney (No cash for Torres>Rooney)

    B) Vidic, Sinclair, Tevez, Taarabt + cash for Torres>Rooney

No brainer? Spend Vidic cash elsewhere?

Can someone explain all of the Petric love? Apparently, he has been pretty bad last season and he is on the decline (he is over 30). Yes Fulham have nice fixtures but he isn't nailed on.

Fulham will start slowly as well, I'm relatively confident of that. Dempsey is the only player worth haning as well imo.

Are all the people with Hangelaand in their teams going for security as they're concerned Hughes isn't nailed on or is he still being seen as a goalscoring CB? Just wondering why the extra 0.5 is being seen as value...

Goals I'd guess. Why one would want any of Fulhams back 4 puzzles me though. I don't care what their first six games ar5e like they couldn't buy a clean sheet last season, albeit still getting good results along the way, like 5-2 against Newcastle.

They kept 11 clean sheets last year - more than Chelsea, Stoke, Villa, WBA, etc.

        Not too shabby.

Fair enough, just wondered as I've gone for Hughes myself as it stands.

Personally think the 2010/11 season (6 goals in 37 games) was a bit of a freak result when compared to the rest of his time in England:

        11/12 - 0 in 38
        09/10 - 1 in 32
        08/09 - 1 in 37
        07/08 - 0 in 15

Nailed on mostly.. looking at his history theres really only one season (6 goals) that gave attacking returns. If u really cant afford the .5 extra, go for Hughes, but it makes me feel a lot better to go with Hangeland tbh

Quite a lot of people investing in Podolski!

Flair teams.. I bet they also have Giroud, Hazard, Marin, Kagawa, etc.
