Stewart Downing picks up the plaudits with a brilliant match-winner as Liverpool record a 1-0 victory in Belarus. Sir Alex Ferguson reveals Nemanja Vidic is ready to return for United’s remaining friendlies, while Chris Brunt admits he is struggling for fitness in time for the new season after picking up a calf problem:

FC Gomel 0 Liverpool 1
Brendan Rodgers chalked up a win and a clean sheet on his competitive debut as Liverpool boss last night. The former Swansea manager named a strong lineup for the Europa League third round qualifier, handing Steven Gerrard a role as the most advanced midfielder, while Fabio Borini led the line with Joe Cole and Stewart Downing on the flanks. Borini and Glen Johnson both had chances before Cole was withdrawn midway through the first-half after picking up a hamstring problem, but it’s fair to say Liverpool were lucky to go in level at half-time after their hosts spurned plenty of opportunities to break the deadlock. Martin Kelly and Lucas came on as subs in the second 45, with the latter continuing his comeback from a knee injury, though the Reds continued to lead a charmed life as Gomel spurning chance after chance. Stewart Downing eventually made the home side pay for their profligacy by firing home a superb 25-yard effort for the only goal of the game on 67 minutes – Borini had a chance to double the Reds’ lead and although he fluffed his lines, Rodgers’ men kept possession well to see out the victory.

Liverpool Starting XI: Jones; Johnson (Kelly 46), Carragher, Skrtel, Enrique; Henderson (Lucas), Spearing, Gerrard; Downing, Borini, Cole (Sterling 22)

The Liverpool centre-halves made the headlines for various reasons last night, Jamie Carragher marked his 700th game for the club, while Martin Skrtel’s display at the back earned him man of the match but the main talking point surrounded Daniel Agger. Initial reports suggested the Dane was absent for the 1-0 win due to a knock but – with Barcelona and Man City both rumoured to be eying up a move – the player’s agent was somewhat cryptic, going on to say:

He is not injured in any way. Only the club and the manager can answer to why he is not in the squad. But the reports of Agger handing in a transfer request are purely nonsense. He is very happy at Liverpool.

In Other News…
Only a couple of weeks ago, Sir Alex Ferguson had doubted whether Nemanja Vidic would be ready in time for the new season but yesterday the United boss revealed his skipper is well on the road to recovery and will feature in the club’s three upcoming friendlies. With Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling still unavailable, Vidic’s return is a timely boost for United’s backline ahead of their opener with Everton on Monday August 20, though Ferguson also hinted that Phil Jones could get the nod at right-back, due to the fact that Rafael is still involved in the Olympics with Brazil:

Chris Smalling is out for 10 weeks with his metatarsal operation and Jonny Evans is still just in light training. They’re big losses at the moment and they will miss the start of the season. Rafael is away [on international duty with Brazil at the Olympics] and Fabio is away on loan so there are four defensive players that we don’t have for the back four positions. We do have Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, though. That will be the back four on tour. Hopefully we don’t get any more injuries as it would leave me a bit short.

Chris Brunt has admitted he is struggling to make the start of the season for West Brom. The Irishman has failed to feature in the club’s recent friendlies due to a calf problem and with just over two weeks until the new campaign kicks off, is yet to return to full training. Speaking to the press yesterday, the Baggies midfielder conceded:

I’ve had a couple of decent days this week and I’m hoping if everything goes alright I’ll be back in full training next week. It’s really frustrating because I’ve missed out on a lot of fitness work as well. Also, I haven’t played any football yet – other than the few training sessions I got involved in. The nature of the injury means it’s difficult for me to run on it, which is a bit of a nightmare. If I want to be involved against Liverpool I’m going to have to play some football.

i like it but midfield could be a bit risky. not sure where Siggy will play, Hazard's first year (but for DGW is worth a go) and Michu's new to the EPL as well (altho I have gone for him myself). May well pay off tho, what do I know?!

Frontline of ade, tevez, graham. Yes I know the risks but there are a lot of choices in the 8.5 – 9.5 strikers who could come good: suarez, cisse, balo, bent, jelly which gives you leaves plenty of options. Is ignoring both of Rooney/ Kun blasphemy?

Also allows me to have 3 big hitters in midfield and 2 in defence. Having rooney & kun only gives me 2 in midfield or a rubbish defence or an otherwise unbalanced team.

      E) Bale (Hazard for GW1?) | Ramires | 6.5 | 6.5 | 4.5

Lots of good options for 6.5: Larsson, McClean, Michu, Walters, Pienaar, Fellaini, N'Zogbia, Hoilett, Diaby

The 4.5 is the only problem if you could find 0.5 to have Maloney would have that. Or could go Bale/Hazard | Ramires | Taraabt | 6.5 | Maloney. Ramires is a bargain at 7.0 imo and will do well for Chelsea cover after GW 1.

Chelsea DGW obv., but I think Cahill is actually nailed on (Luiz and Ivanovic competing for RB) and both are excellent in the opposition box (in fact I distinctly remeber Cahill nailing one from outside the box for Bolton in GW1 last year, much to the chagrin of the FFS community and the joy of all the casual players. I’d say Kagawa is more nailed on against to a lot of people.

He was the missing link in ManU squad, great playmaker who can pass AND score. Because of him, Roo may play more upfront, he doesn’t have to PLAY the ball before the 16th metre

Great playmaker but Fergie loves the 4-4-2 against weaker teams and Welbeck and Chicha is some stiff competition there.

Same can be said of Cleverley, Anderson et al....

Nobody is safe in United's team, anybody but Rooney is a risk as an attacking/midfield selection.

I would say the next safest attacking option after Rooney is Valencia, but even he will see the bench at times.

Kagawa will play plenty, but he won't be nailed on.

Nobody is nailed on at United bar Vidic (when fit), Evra (no other LB), Carrick and Rooney.

I'd say Kagawa is more nailed on against to a lot of people.

He was the missing link in ManU squad, great playmaker who can pass AND score. Because of him, Roo may play more upfront, he doesn't have to PLAY the ball before the 16th metre

I like Mata a lot for this season Frats...he could well be similar to Silva, who needed a season to familiarise himself with the culture of the Premiership, before he shone brightly. Mata is a similarly talented player too...immaculate touch allied to incisive vision and an eye for goal...class player ready to burst forth, imho.

    - Nicely priced
    - Has good attacking return potential

Have Fabio, Rafael, Lescott, Clark, Clyne.

I knew Rafael had Olympics games but was fairly sure he'd get the right back spot for GW1 and then some. But Jones is gonna get this RB shot according to Fergie and not now needed at CB it seems with Vidic fit. If he was tied up to CB with Smalling injured then Rafael looked a cert for RB for a while.

Thinking of swapping Lescott and Rafael with 1 Chelsea and other rotating decent CB.

My question, very roundabout way to get here, is will the regular Chelsea back four be Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry and Cole? Terry might be suspended for a while with Luis as RB, Ivanovic CB but that back 4, bar new signings, seems nailed on???

Are you joking me? England probably have one of the best back 4 panels in the world. What team is Rafael making again?

I'm a Liverpool supporter. Despite his fairly good Euro performance Glenn Johnson is a poor defender. Terry is an auld fella. Lescott is nothing special, prone to mistakes but he's definitely improving. Don't see Jones replacing any of them soon. England had also a class keeper and 2 defensive midfielders to make their back 4 look better defensively than it is.

You think their back 4 is better than Uruguay, Germany, Italy, Spain and Rafael's Brazil? Just cos their world ranking was inflated by being unbeaten in the Euros does not make them one of the best back 4s around.

Jones is a quality player but not "immensely superior" to the Brazilian Rafael who's technically better but not a good a defender as Jones. I like Jones, he'll get more gametime than Rafael if the stays fit but not immensely better!

Terry is an auld fella. So was Nesta when he retired. So was Maldini. He's in that league. A Cole is probably the best lb in the world. Oh, and they've got Leighton Baines as cover in that position for good measure.

              Johnson had an outstanding Euros.

Rio Ferdinand was left at home.

There are other players not in the squad (because of injury etc.) who are also top quality e.g. Matt Dawson

How old is Phil Jones again?

Finally, since when have Brazil been good defensively? Rafael might make a good RW, not a good RB though. IMO, of course.

I'm not disagreeing with you above. I just don't agree Jones is an immensely superior player. He's a better, not immensely superior, defender than Rafael, but I woudn't agree he's an immensely superior player If Rodgers signed Rafael in the morning as a RW I'd be more than happy. He should be trying Johnson there if you as ask me, but nobody does. In my opinion like!

    Evening you lot

Just as an experiment, I thought I'd put together a team based purely on statistics. I've used a combination of value and highest projected points from the 6GW match projections:

    Federici/Jaaskelainen
    Tompkins/Terry/Lescott/Rangel/McCartney
    Bale/McLean/Noble/Silva/Maloney
    Pogrebnyak/Rooney/Aguero

I have no idea how they rotate, but it's not a bad looking team.

I'm looking forward to the start of the season when all those who start off well start posting their nuggets of advice, now that they're so fab. And the one season wonders from last season who don't start off so well, they'll be posting that bit less. All fun tho, wouldn't change a thing. Next Thurs/Fri are going to be horrific here, RMT records will be broken.

He will get enough games, just not as many as last season. Wouldn't have him anyway, as he's not a prolific enough scorer.
