Stewart Downing picks up the plaudits with a brilliant match-winner as Liverpool record a 1-0 victory in Belarus. Sir Alex Ferguson reveals Nemanja Vidic is ready to return for United’s remaining friendlies, while Chris Brunt admits he is struggling for fitness in time for the new season after picking up a calf problem:

FC Gomel 0 Liverpool 1
Brendan Rodgers chalked up a win and a clean sheet on his competitive debut as Liverpool boss last night. The former Swansea manager named a strong lineup for the Europa League third round qualifier, handing Steven Gerrard a role as the most advanced midfielder, while Fabio Borini led the line with Joe Cole and Stewart Downing on the flanks. Borini and Glen Johnson both had chances before Cole was withdrawn midway through the first-half after picking up a hamstring problem, but it’s fair to say Liverpool were lucky to go in level at half-time after their hosts spurned plenty of opportunities to break the deadlock. Martin Kelly and Lucas came on as subs in the second 45, with the latter continuing his comeback from a knee injury, though the Reds continued to lead a charmed life as Gomel spurning chance after chance. Stewart Downing eventually made the home side pay for their profligacy by firing home a superb 25-yard effort for the only goal of the game on 67 minutes – Borini had a chance to double the Reds’ lead and although he fluffed his lines, Rodgers’ men kept possession well to see out the victory.

Liverpool Starting XI: Jones; Johnson (Kelly 46), Carragher, Skrtel, Enrique; Henderson (Lucas), Spearing, Gerrard; Downing, Borini, Cole (Sterling 22)

The Liverpool centre-halves made the headlines for various reasons last night, Jamie Carragher marked his 700th game for the club, while Martin Skrtel’s display at the back earned him man of the match but the main talking point surrounded Daniel Agger. Initial reports suggested the Dane was absent for the 1-0 win due to a knock but – with Barcelona and Man City both rumoured to be eying up a move – the player’s agent was somewhat cryptic, going on to say:

He is not injured in any way. Only the club and the manager can answer to why he is not in the squad. But the reports of Agger handing in a transfer request are purely nonsense. He is very happy at Liverpool.

In Other News…
Only a couple of weeks ago, Sir Alex Ferguson had doubted whether Nemanja Vidic would be ready in time for the new season but yesterday the United boss revealed his skipper is well on the road to recovery and will feature in the club’s three upcoming friendlies. With Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling still unavailable, Vidic’s return is a timely boost for United’s backline ahead of their opener with Everton on Monday August 20, though Ferguson also hinted that Phil Jones could get the nod at right-back, due to the fact that Rafael is still involved in the Olympics with Brazil:

Chris Smalling is out for 10 weeks with his metatarsal operation and Jonny Evans is still just in light training. They’re big losses at the moment and they will miss the start of the season. Rafael is away [on international duty with Brazil at the Olympics] and Fabio is away on loan so there are four defensive players that we don’t have for the back four positions. We do have Phil Jones, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, though. That will be the back four on tour. Hopefully we don’t get any more injuries as it would leave me a bit short.

Chris Brunt has admitted he is struggling to make the start of the season for West Brom. The Irishman has failed to feature in the club’s recent friendlies due to a calf problem and with just over two weeks until the new campaign kicks off, is yet to return to full training. Speaking to the press yesterday, the Baggies midfielder conceded:

I’ve had a couple of decent days this week and I’m hoping if everything goes alright I’ll be back in full training next week. It’s really frustrating because I’ve missed out on a lot of fitness work as well. Also, I haven’t played any football yet – other than the few training sessions I got involved in. The nature of the injury means it’s difficult for me to run on it, which is a bit of a nightmare. If I want to be involved against Liverpool I’m going to have to play some football.

Hangeland - Consider Newcastle def alternatively.

Except Allen, pretty much the generic team.

Have you thought about your defensive rotation? I've not worked yours out, it's just something you need to look at. I've heard whispers about a Martin O'Neil tweet saying Cuellar and O'Shea are battling for one place, keep that in mind.

Allen is a good player but I prefer Noble around that price range with his penalties too. Hazard/Mata for the DGW looks strong. Strong midfield and front 3 imo. Nice team. Probably 8/10 from me.

I owned Downing for 3 weeks last season. And not the first three weeks where it could be excused, right in the middle when we all knew he was having an awful season. And you want to know the kicker? I ditched him before he notched two (FPL) assists vs. QPR.

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly how Rodger's team will line up but there could be quite a few good value picks - Suarez at 9.5 could be good if he stops hitting posts, Bellamy and Downing are 6.5m, Henderson only 6.

I am totally open to the idea that nothing that was true about Liverpool last season will be true this season. It's exciting .... but not so much that I'll go with an opening Pool gambit. Plenty of rubbish fixtures to sit back and see how they're doing.

It's a weird one. Used the season ticker to find a combination where I would always have 3 favourable fixtures. The home/away thing doesnt really come into it. Just went for 3 defenders Cuellar/Hangeland/Rangel who can keep clean sheets both home and away. McCartney because he is cheap, has good early fixtures and provides good cover for the other 4.

For 4.5, Guthrie might do his job very well - sit on your bench. Seriously tho, if he's a regular starter, which I think he will, he'll do fine. Thought he was impressive enough any time he got on the pitch for NewC.

No, I think its well worth it considering the extra money to spend on the rest of your team. Aguero could be rested so he can play CL.. I think/hope Tevez will be a regular starter in PL

The risk is in not having Aguero. He is the most owned player and if he scores a hattrick first GW you will be playing catch up to a lot of people. Having a forward line of, say, Torres, Aguero and Tevez with a weaker midfield seems less risky to me than having Tevez instead of Aguero.

not going anywhere near a wigan defender would be an improvement, like the idea of 3 team rotation though.

2 x 4.5 mids is disastrous, no point rotating 2 mids who will only get your 2/3 pts per GW. Downgrade Yaya to a 6.5 and use the spare to upgrade Britton

lots of questions mainly around defence
    1.Vidic or Evra?

2.Cuellar or Fabio (to rotate with Hangeland and Noble/Maloney in mids, gunnahave a swinging postion between a 3-4-3 and 4-3-3)

3.Kompany Vs defs (in particualr Clichy/Lescott)

4.Silva vs any other mid in particular bale

currently full Manchester coverage only 1 chels, no Aresnal, no spurs, no LPool

    Hart, (Henderson)
    Kompany,Hangeland,Vidic (Cuellar, Clyne)
    Silva,Kagawa, Maloney, Noble, (Guthrie)
    Rooney,Graham, Torres

      1) prefer vidic will get more attacking returns than evra.
      2) cuellar not nailed on yet but id prefer him if he was.
      3) city dont sign another cb get lescott and free up 1m (think he has just as much attacking potential as kompany)
      4) bale has better fixtures early on and cheaper but it gives your team no man city attacking coverage

      Yikes, expensive defence

      1. Vidic for goal threat
      2. Why not do Hange > Colloccini and rotate with Cuellar
      3. I prefer the security of Komp but others will disagree
      4. You need some City cover so would stick for now, although Kagawa > Siggy could be a good option as you already have Rooney.

I like Guthrie, he can score assist and is cheap. I'm not too gone on Yaya but in fairness he does score the points. I think that pair is much safer, the other two could be hit or miss. I'd go yaya and guthrie

4mil def I'm thinking Demel or Gunter.
Michu Hazard kagawa, 3 unknowns so that's a gamble. I like all three (have Kagawa myself) and think they should do well but just think having them all is risky.
I like Tevez, have him myself but am wondering if it's better to take the hit money-wise and stump up for Aguero.
How about trying to squeez in some chelsea cover, especially with the dgw

Recreativo Huelva look favourites to win the prize for the worst kit of the new season. Here's their new away strip, designed by Hummel:

    http://www.footballkitnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Hummel-Recreativo-Shirt-2012.jpg

It's been described in Spain as "an inverted Tour de France King of the Mountains jersey", "conceived by Minnie Mouse's stylist" or just "mierda". Anyone found anything worse than this so far?
