We end our analysis of the Gameweek 35 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on three Monday matches – Fulham v Leicester City, Brighton and Hove Albion v Everton and Nottingham Forest v Southampton.

Any numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

This bank holiday bonanza brought a whopping 21 goals in three matches, with big consequences for the battle to stay up.

Everton and Nottingham Forest secured important victories but Leicester’s position is even more worrying and the Southampton relegation is almost mathematically official.

MARCH BENCHED THEN INJURED

For the 60% of top 100k managers that own Brighton’s Solly March (£5.3m), his starting spot wasn’t supposed to be in jeopardy. All league matches had been started until Thursday night’s win over Manchester United and, surprisingly, he was again left on the bench for Everton.

Pre-match, Roberto De Zerbi simply said March was “not in his best moment” but there was an even worse moment later on. Already 3-0 down, March was one of four substitutions made by De Zerbi at half-time.

Before long, the winger was the epicentre of Brighton’s comeback attempt, creating two chances, totalling five penalty area touches and producing one shot on target. Yet he hurt his hamstring whilst chasing back for Everton’s fourth goal and had to be replaced immediately.

The timing of this is unlucky for owners, as the Seagulls are about to have successive double gameweeks. Perhaps March’s new rotation threat would’ve already seen sales take place but the bad-looking injury will escalate these.

MITOMA AND MAC ALLISTER COMBINE

Selling him for Alexis Mac Allister (£5.5m) may be dismissed as a sideways move but similarly-priced alternative replacements seem limited. Here, the Argentine hit the crossbar and soon combined with template choice Kaoru Mitoma (£5.6m) to score a consolation goal, just days after his stoppage-time penalty defeated Man United.

Since Gameweek 23, no Premier League player has taken more shots than Mac Allister (50) and, even though moving backwards into central midfield was expected to limit his threat, the World Cup winner is only bettered by Erling Haaland (£12.4m) since Gameweek 31.

ABOVE: Most goal attempts since Gameweek 31

Owning a penalty taker that takes so many shots is highly appealing, especially one with five fixtures during the final three gameweeks.

DOES STEELE KEEP HIS PLACE?

It’s a bad night for those with both March and cheap goalkeeper Jason Steele (£4.0m). Brighton’s defensive assets lost their clean sheet after just 34 seconds, with Steele later beaten twice at his near post as well as being the victim of an own goal.

As a team, Everton’s expected goals (xG) total was just 2.24 but Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.3m) and Dwight McNeil (£5.1m) both netted twice to pull off a huge south coast shock. In fact, McNeil’s pair of assists means it’s a brilliant 21-point haul – the winger’s best-ever in FPL.

So does this embarrassment mean Steele goes back to Brighton’s bench for Double Gameweek 36? If so, Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) awaits.

MORE RETURNS FOR MADDISON

Meanwhile, the lunchtime match brought a 5-3 goal-fest between Fulham and Leicester. There was previous popularity for James Maddison (£7.9m) ahead of a generous-looking Double Gameweek 29 that preceded Bournemouth at home. He duly blanked in all three and missed the Wolverhampton Wanderers match due to illness.

Yet FPL managers may want to put faith in Leicester’s talisman when he faces the untrustworthy defences of Liverpool and Newcastle United.

Attacking returns have arrived for him in three consecutive matches, with both a goal and an assist at Craven Cottage. Furthermore, Maddison should be back on penalty duties – having missed from the spot last Monday, Jamie Vardy (£9.1m) failed this time before the 26-year-old had some redemption 15 minutes later.

ABOVE: Maddison leads several ‘goal threat’ metrics during the 5-3 defeat

Leicester’s furthest forward player on the average position map, he led the way for shots, chances created, penalty area touches and expected goal involvement (xGI) in this match. No bonus points though, just like two-goal team-mate Harvey Barnes (£6.6m), who remains without any throughout the whole campaign despite netting 12 times.

SCINTILLATING GIBBS-WHITE

Finally, on a day of double-digit totals for McNeil, Doucoure, Barnes, Willian (£5.5m), Tom Cairney (£4.7m) and James Ward-Prowse (£6.1m), three such individuals belong to Nottingham Forest.

A quickfire Taiwo Awoniyi (£5.6m) double put the hosts 2-0 up, with Danilo (£4.5m) setting up the second and then bagging one for himself after a delicious backheel from Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m).

Additionally, the former Wolves midfielder bagged a first-half spot-kick and could’ve added another assist late on had Felipe (£4.5m) not been ruled offside. A wasted acrobatic celebration from the Brazilian centre-back.

He is quietly having a brilliant FPL season and is now on 15 goal contributions. His last four matches have brought three goals and three assists, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Crystal Palace to come. He’s an extremely interesting differential option, especially for March sellers.

Going though these options with 2FTs...

    1) All in: Botman March Watkins to Kiwior Mac Wilson -4
    2) Wilson: Botman Watkins to Kiwior Wilson
    3) Mac: March to Mac
    4) Getting $: downgrade Watkins
    5) Maverick: March Watkins to Murphy Welbeck/Enciso

I've responded a few times already, especially given simialrity of our teams piques my interest.

1 & 2 is basically the same as my A or A+B - but is it best use of 2/4 remaining FT?
3 is pretty straightforward and rolling into 37 with 2FT and more information on City might be useful.
4 is how I will burn a FT if I don't make moves
5 is interesting, but I don't know if there are enough minutes in those guys for me

Yeah that March injury and results yesterday opened new dimension of tinkering! I'm not to sold using FTs on New and Bri guys but it is some DGW frenzy, possibly better to use these to get Mahrez/Bruno/KDB for DGW37. That's why
I'm actually tempted by option 4. What could be nice in 5 is if you go Murphy and Encision you may have lots in the bank for DGW37.

I guess the issue with 5 is that you go into 37 with only 1FT so you need hits to spend much of that ITB which softens the appeal.

I think either 3 this week and 4 as part of brining in Bruno in 37 is good. Or skip 3 altogether, do 4 this week and see if you can add KDB instead in 37 (or Bruno or another City asset if KDB doesn't look sensible).

Morning all, 2FT and kinda stumped on which direction to take this team:

    Raya
    Trippier*, Botman*, Estupinan*, Shaw, Trent
    Rashford, Mitoma*, Salah
    Haaland, (C)Isak*

    Kepa, Martinelli, Grealish, Watkins

    a. Botman* & Watkins to Bueno & Wilson*
    b. Martinelli to Mac Allister* (probably bench Shaw)

A feels less than ideal by using 2 of remaining 4FT to shuffle Newcastle players. It also leaves some harder benching decisions in 37.

B would set me up to do Watkins to Greenwood and then one of Mitoma or MacAllister to Fernandes in 37 or even hold the Brighton lads and do Salah to KDB (8/9 doublers in 37).

Given I have a similar team to a lot, not really seen any other moves that scream out to me.

Actually I would try to keep Martinelli for the final week, or really play him this week over Shaw! Rest of my thoughts as above.

Arsenal more than likely to have lost the league by then. Nothing to play for so it'd be a prime one for rotation. Yes would love Martinelli vs Wolves at home on the final day, but does he start?

At home finishing the league, surely he should play

Maybe, I guess it depends on Arteta's mindset - give the first team a chance to play for the fans at home to celebrate a successful season (which it still is even if they end up 2nd) or shuffle the pack and give some of the second string a chance to show their worth.

Grealish >> Mahrez? Hmmm. It’s really hard to see a move and team looks decent. Perhaps the extra FT for 37 is the way to go so B may be best

Feels dull, but perhaps is the move - gives me a lot of doublers which surely is the sensible approach

Could go Grealish to Mac? I think Martinelli is a much better asset. Not even certain Grealish plays both in the double? Why are people assuming that?

He has been pretty nailed up to this point when not near CL games. I guess Foden has been injured so that has probably helped that. So perhaps Grealish could be a choice.

To be honest I'm not that keen on either option. I'm also on the side of keeping Martinelli, even or especially if the title is gone, given the recent article showing a significant xG boost for teams in that situation (2nd with nothing to play for) and the final day fixture. And like you say, I don't think 2 FTs for Wilson is that great when there's a risk he might not even start til the Leicester game (given spacing of the fixtures). I am struggling to find a better suggestion at the moment but haven't really seen any games this weekend so maybe I can get back to you on that later in the week

2FTs and 2.3m ITB but no real idea what to do? Any initial ideas? Get rid of Grealish perhaps?

    Kepa
    TAA, Tripps, Estu, Schär
    Salah, Rash, Mitoma, Mac A
    Haaland(C), Isak
    (Raya, Shaw, Grealish, Greenwood)

Good team. Maybe get a better keeper? Can’t see a move other than that as you are well set up. I would move for an Arsenal attacker soon..

Yeah I can’t see a lot. In a way I should have gone for Mahrez last week but for some reason I wanted 2FTs

    2. Biggsy

I think you can bench Grealish and then you'd expect him to play both in 37 (remember they could be the games than win City the league). I am honestly stumped with what to do because you've got the kind of team + 2FT this week that I want to have when I've used my 2FT....

If you are playing Kepa this week and, I presume, for the double in 37, maybe downgrade Raya to use a transfer and generate a bit more cash to attack 37?

      1. RAFA THE GAFFA
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, I think the keeper downgrade or Grealish to Mahrez or a better DGW37 asset is all I can see possible

Why Mahrez? Looks like he only started this week in the league with the expectation he doesn't start tonight. Might start vs Everton, but doubt you'll take that risk ahead of the current midfield and I'd fancy Grealish to be nailed again for 37.

            • 9 Years

Yeah, just when I do watch Grealish he doesn’t excite me. Can’t seem him scoring that well in 37

So perhaps, given you really don't have a lot of options, the sideways switch is a good move.

            • 9 Years

Other option is Schar >> Wilson with the 2FTs I guess

Yeah, its a similar option to i'm thinking above. I think issue is that you'd be going into 37 with 1FT so options for say Bruno or KDB likely to be more limited without losing Salah (who has a fading Villa side at home)

    3. Atimis
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 7 months ago

I'm sticking with Kepa as it is really tough to get a better option, eventually you may just downgrade Raya to get more funds. Surely wouldn't get rid of Grealish this week.

  4. Mati

2 FTs, 0.1 short of March -> Mac.

    A - March -> Gross, roll FT.
    B - Ederson -> Ramsdale (for 38, start Kepa in 36 and 37) + March -> Mac

    1. Biggsy

Kepa isn't a bad shout to start in 36 and 37 (not great fixtures, but two of them + save points you'd hope). Which means why do B with Ramsdale? Newcastle isn't a great fixture for Kepa in 38 but being last day of the season, few will keep clean sheets anyway and the extra £ may help attack 37 or a punt in 38? Maybe Iversen to cover risk Kepa is benched for Mendy?

      1. Mati
        • 3 Years

Yes, thinking about Iversen too. Other option is selling Kepa instead of Ederson, but I'm tired of his 2-pointers.

I am not Ederson's biggest fan, in fact I'd go so far as I so I'm very against him as an FPL option - therefore I'd lose him everytime

This. If the same Brighton show up at Arsenal as did against Everton, Martinelli will be the wrong call, but I don't think you can justify benching any of the others you have. Solanke easy choice.

Lads, please help - I am chasing in my league and really need some nice moves with the team. Current squad is:

    Steele
    TAA - Estu - Trippier
    Grealish - Mitoma - Rash - Gakpo
    Watkins - Haaland (C) - Alvarez (V)
Subs: Kepa - Zinchenko - Billing - Chilwell

    I have 2 FT, 4.1 ITB

My dillema is which ones to sell and who to bring in. I am thinking of getting rid of Chilwell, who is now also injured plus Billing who isn't delivering much. Bringing in 2 from Newcastle is an option, but I was also thinking if it would be better to plan DGW 37 with focus on Man Utd players. I would really appreciate some opinions here. Cheers!

Anybody looking at Willock this week?
I thought he looked v. dangerous against Arsenal, was main line breaker and could have had 2G quite easily.
But I don't know enough about the dynamics at NCU to be confident in minutes over double (Longstaff returning?, Almiron Gordon and St Max requiring game time, Murphy form, Wilson and/or Isak). Does 2 starts/150 mins seem realistic across both games?

Yep looking at either Willock / Joelinton for 1 week punt in place of March. My guess is both are fairly nailed for 2 starts even if Longstaff returns (with one of them LW), but look out for what Hairy Potter has to say about tactical dynamics as he's much more clued in on this than I am

Ok cool, Willock's minutes over previous 10 are much better than I realised as well. 9x over 60 mins and 4x full 90. Like the Joelinton pick too but, yep, it's for March, so can only trade down in price.

I missed most of this game but from the ones I've seen at least decent chunks of (Everton, Brentford) I've thought he's looked excellent, definitely worth a punt. If I didn't already have Wilson and Isak I'd go for him

Willock should be a guaranteed starter. He gets into good attacking positions from midfield and is a cheap punt in a DGW.

Miggy and Murphy will probably share minutes until the end of the season. ASM is just back to fitness so can't see him starting both and not sure Howe trusts Gordon enough at the minute. If Longstaff is out, it means Joelinton plays deeper and less attacking threat than LW. Also some reports that he was limping after the Arsenal match.

There aren’t enough captaincy discussion posts yet, unless most are going Haaland again?!

Who is the popular captain pick if chasing?!

Isak imo, or Trippier if you have the appetite.

I imagine most will be going Haaland again! Isak/Wilson will have a few captainers though I’m sure.

I don't think you can look past your Newcastle striker flavour of choice with their games.

I am not 100% Haaland is a great option - I would expect a rest with the game sandwiched by RM fixtures, but then I didn't expect him to play 90 at the weekend so shows what I know!

Think he'll start, usually does when not injured. Only 3 games this season he has played less than 45 mins, think 2 of them he was absent due to injury and the last one (26 mins) was the game he got injured in?

20 games of 90 mins, only 3 games (including the one he got off with an injury after 26 mins) he has featured with below 60 minutes

I was on Wilson, but after the way the Arsenal game went and how they both looked, pretty sure it'll be Isak, starting to worry Wilson may not start either

I think I'll just save FT, bench March and play Shaw.

Would you play Shaw or Watkins?

Watkins seems to be past his purple patch and Villa possibly fading a little, so i'd play Shaw - doubly so if it looks like he moves left with Varane possibly back

Normally I’d back the attacker, but Wolves are too poor away from home to ignore Shaw.

    DDG
    TAA / Estupinan / Trippier
    Salah / Rashford / Mitoma / March*
    Haaland / Isak / Jota*

    Raya / Grealish / Botman* / Gabriel

    2FT / 0.2 ITB

How about Jota / March / Botman to Wilson / Mac / 3.9 for -4?

Or March / Botman to Murphy / 3.9?

Do you think using 2FT and taking a hit is the best approach to managing your few remaining FT? Not saying it isn't but I am struggling to justify using 2 of my remaining 4 just to change Newcastle assets for other Newcastle assets when there are more doubles and the fun of GW38 to come.

Botman needs to play - i'd be tempted to do March to Mac and roll or downgrade Jota to Greenwood and have the money for Bruno, KDB etc in 37 perhaps.

The hit isn’t ideal, but it is replacing an injured player and a SGW for two doublers.

Also, Newcastle defence has been poor for weeks now. Wilson has far bigger upside than Botman IMO.

I could be dead wrong though.

    Watkins >?

    A- Isak
    B- Wilson

Have Botman, Schar as NEW coverage

Flip a coin. Likely play even minutes.

Isak maybe edges it as he can play out wide if Wilson plays, but Wilson has pens though.

Flip a coin or spin a wheel app.

I think Isak is number 2 penaly taker if Wilson is not on the pitch

If you’re only going to have one, Isak probably edges it.

I’d rather have him the last two weeks as a more likely starter Vs Leicester and Chelsea.

Isak for me. He seems like he’s first choice and has a better chance of starting both games.

Trying to work out how to deal with the March problem while keeping 3xBrighton and a City asset (so I can 3x them in GW37). Thoughts on below?

Dias & March to Stones & MacAllistar
    or
Arrizabalaga & March to Forester and Mac Allister?

    Team as stands is

    Azzi Steele
    Trippier Botman Dias Pinnock Shaw
    Bruno Rashford March Mitoma Salah
    Watkins Haaland Isak
