The FFS Pro Pundits 34

And just like that, I find myself writing the last article of the season.

NOT AN ENJOYABLE SEASON?

FPL Gameweek 36 early Scout Picks: Brighton + Newcastle triple-ups

I’ll be honest. Just because of how the season has fallen after Gameweek 28, it has probably been one of the least enjoyable campaigns of Fantasy Football that I’ve played. And it has nothing to do with how I’m doing in Fantasy Premier League (sitting at 99k at the moment). Anyone I’ve spoken to, and this includes people that are having a very good season, is finding it a little bit like a chore because the schedule and FPL are gaming us, rather than vice-versa.

There are many things that have happened that make this season less memorable, in my opinion. The fact that we all had an extra Wildcard in all but name made 2022/23 fairly ‘easy’ on paper, with three overhaul periods leading to 80% of our players being similar in the second half of the season. The schedule after Gameweek 26 had a lot of doubles and because of this, the player pool was incredibly limited and we FPL managers consistently felt shackled when making our picks. There was just no scope for creativity or applying our minds too much because you were simply playing the schedule.

That said, it still is a game we all love and I will be eagerly awaiting next season with a big appetite. All things considered, we should be back to the good old days with a normal schedule and no Double Gameweek overdose in the second half of the campaign. In fact, in the last two to three weeks, I’ve enjoyed talking about next season more than I have contemplating the moves for this one, despite clocking a captaincy haul from Callum Wilson (£7.2m) in Gameweek 36.

PLAYING FOR FUN

FPL notes: Haaland haul, Ake rested + Solanke or Kane for Free Hit? 1

I wonder if there are any learnings from FPL this season?

From an individual point of view, in the last ten weeks of 2022/23, I’ve been reminded that I enjoy the game the most when I play for ‘fun’. I hope I will not stop myself from going for some picks next season due to reasons like staying with the pack. I think I now have the temperament to deal with extreme variance and have learned to detach from it emotionally. Having being shackled for a while, I think I do value just playing my own game, something that gives me joy. I think if there’s enough thought and research behind ‘playing your own game’ and a reasonable amount of not going too crazy, we should be okay. Right?

Having a permanent captaincy option like Erling Haaland (£12.4m) does help as you’re not really going to take extreme risks anyway because it would take a lot to bet against him for the armband. Maybe once I look back at the season, there might be a few more learnings but at the moment, our moves have been so dictated by the post-Christmas schedule that it is difficult for me to look past the ‘fun’ element.

My fellow Pro Pundit and pod partner Zophar made a good point when he said that people are so affected emotionally by the output of one or two players in their teams because they are the only players whose points actually matter, due to the template being so consistent and strong.

GAMEWEEK 38: SON TO SHINE?

Learning from 'The Great and The Good' FPL managers 4

FPL managers will be moving into punt territory in the final Gameweek of the season with everything except the relegation race and UEFA Europa Conference league position all but decided. I’ll just throw one gamble in there that I kind of fancy, someone who will be difficult to get to for most people involved. Despite the electric atmosphere that will be expected at Elland Road, I’ve got a feeling about Son Heung-min (£11.5m). Harry Kane (£11.4m) has been dropping a little deeper of late and I expect Tottenham Hotspur to get a fair amount of joy on the counter as Leeds United need to go for three points to have hope for survival. Son posted an expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of 0.7 in the previous game against Brentford and I do think he has the explosiveness to go big.

Why not go Kane instead? Well, there is nothing wrong with it but we’re all ‘vibes’ in the final week of the season and I just have a feeling about Son. What I noticed about Leeds was that their heads were dropping after the game against West Ham United and I don’t know if the reverse psychology attempt from Big Sam will pay dividends.

In case you’re looking for punts elsewhere, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Liverpool are the places to go, in my opinion.

A THANK YOU

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit

That is it from me this week. I just want to take a minute to congratulate Neale, Tom and the editorial team at Fantasy Football Scout for doing an incredible job this season. The content has gone up a couple of notches and I’m not just praising the team because I write for the website. For as long as I’ve played FPL seriously, I make it a point to try to read everything written on this site. It has been my practice for the longest time and I genuinely believe just covering that arms you with all the ammunition you need to make your decisions. I would also like to thank Chris, Geoff and the editorial team for making writing so much fun as I’m genuinely given a free hand to write about whatever I fancy and unlike the second half of this FPL season, that has been truly liberating.

Also the last and the biggest ‘thank you’ goes to all of you reading what we type. I always have and always will be grateful for your support. Here’s to next season being ‘back to the good old days’.

Good luck with the final roll of the dice and if you fancy some more FPL content, we had a ‘vibes and laughs’-heavy final pod of the season which you can view below.

Yeah thinking I may be the same with Shaw very unlikely to be risked surely and Porro possibly dropped. Only advantage I have over the two above me is 2FTs so hopefully I can navigate it without needing a hit

      Hi Natedog,

Thanks for help/advice during the season -wishing you all the best on Sunday OR away from mini league how have you done during this tough season.

      ---

Do you or they have any chips to play?

Anyone of the three rolling a ft from last week?

Keeping your final choice unwraps what is the difference between them & yourself?

Possible look at Aston Villa/Tottenham/Brentford with the other end in Everton/Leeds United & Leicester City
even Newcastle United/Manchester United (although last one might rota with FA Cup final to come)

Form always on the last day of season goes out the window some high scoring games

Hey mate, cheers, good luck to you too for the finale!

None of us have any chips, I'm the only one with 2FTs though and they've had a tendency to take hits in recent weeks so they may do it again. I have no decisions yet but main players I'm looking at are probably Son/Kane, Eze, Paqueta, Gray possibly if playing up top, I'm sure there are others too. Main differences are they both have Alvarez while I have Rashford and Bruno, one has Foden too but I'd expect he'll at best cameo after going off injured. I have a couple of other differentials (Martinez, Porro but unsure if he'll play) but I'm hoping the extra FT may make a difference.

How are things looking for you?

Same . 7 points behind in mine which is an extra £300 at stake. Should be on for between just over a grand to 2 grand though barring some miracle. This is why I play.. better than top 500 or top 1k etc that's for sure

    Iversen
    Trippier, TAA, Shaw
    Gakpo, Bruno, Rashford, Mahrez, Ode
    Haaland, Wilson

    - Raya, Isak, Estu, Stones

Is just doing Raya > Alisson and playing him the safe bet?
    Is the bench order OK?
    Any other suggestions?

Iverson is fine this week. No guarantee that Pool dot give their reserve keeper a game, at least Iverson will play, and Smith's been talking about keeping it tight
I'd be more worried if you'll have 3 starting defenders?

Good to hear your support for Iversen. I think he's a better pick that Raya given likely rest for Hammers top players. And take your point about focusing on getting three playing defs. Will look there and wait for possible team news. Thanks.

I would really love for Haaland to be confirmed not starting before the deadline. Kane scares me this week and the only possibility of getting him is Haaland --> Kane. Would be nice to do that without too much risk involved.

Just from a points perspective he scares me as he could inflict some serious damage on the counter against Leeds.

But, as I have Kane it takes the edge off it.

Id sell Robertson, probably Macallister as targets to move off

Eze is also a popular MF add

      But free up cash.

Feeling like getting Kane, Eze & 1 wild punt for a -8, what do you think?

    A) Haaland, Grealish & Wilson > Kane, Eze & Darwin/Jota
    B) Haaland, Grealish & Mahrez > Kane, Eze & Barnes
    C) Wilson, Grealish & Mahrez > Kane, Eze & Palmer

I think you are probably taking -8 to lose at least two players who should start which makes ever making that -8 back a lot less likely. Maybe the Kane and Eze bit for -4.

I like it - does depend on appetite for betting against Haaland. I'd probably have Botman ahead of Estu - Chelsea were woeful last night and expect Newcastle to hold them. Shaw in the team right call as doubt he will cameo if out.

      1. Karan_G14

I just feel a Kane haul will hurt a lot in my MLs as those who are chasing surely aren’t capping Haaland. And the top spots I’m chasing I’m hoping they don’t get Kane. Agree with that I think Newcastle will beat Chelsea comfortably.

As an "all or noting" roll, it would be exactly that. I have looked at Bruno to Son as part of my moves but I just don't see Bruno sitting out and, whilst he isn't the machine he has been, I still wouldn't lose him home vs Fulham

Man United have something to play for? Err...like what? Win, lose or draw nothing changes for them

3rd Place. Most home wins record. These are competitive sportsmen....

Something about home wins record I believe.

Gotta guess how important that is

The prestigious 3rd place trophy. Players will be putting it all on the line for that, with no eye at all on the Cup final.

      Rashford.

I don't think Leicester really have much about them - and if they had any fight I suspect we'd have seen it

Suspect Leicester will be up against a weakened Hammers team so possibly good to have Maddison, but not for Rashford.

        Why weakened?

They've got 10 days till the final after Sunday and have some integrity to Leeds and Everton to put out a decent team.

It's a bit of an unwritten rule in these circumstances.

They'd be fuming if someone played a weak side to let someone else survive at their expense.

Looking to have some possibilities ironed out to keep options open.

    - Think Haaland & Grealish/Mitoma to Kane & Eze is one option.
    - Greenwood & Grealish to Mbeumo & Eze something I am eyeing up if I don't have the guts to ditch Haaland.
    - Maybe Mitoma & Grealish to Eze & Ode but not really feeling Arsenal as an option.

Think the rest of the team I am comfortable keeping. Will play Shaw but expect Botman to come in

    Raya
    Trent, Trippier, Shaw*
    Salah, Bruno, Mitoma, Grealish, Rashford
    Haaland, Isak
    (Kepa, Botman, Estu, Greenwood)

One of the main mini leagues I am in, currently one point behind first. Wondering whether to roll the dice or not. I am currently on this:

    De Gea
Van Dijk - Akanji - Botman
    Gakpo - Mitouma - Salah - Rashford
    Wilson - Haaland - Martial

    Steele - Grealish - Guehi - Porro

I am seriously debating Haaland and Grealish out for Kane & Foden for a -4. Any other suggestions are welcomed.

I believe Grealish plays, unless his "injury" is real.
      I like the Gakpo pick
1 point doesnt need you to go crazy.
Eze or Mcneil could be good MF targets

Who from this team are likely not to start?

    DDG Forster
    TAA Dias Trippier Robertson Estupinan
    Salah Mahrez MacAllister Eze Rashford
    Haaland Martial Enciso

I've got a feeling Enciso is injured. At the end of the first half, he sat on the ground holding his hammy and although he came out for the second half, he didn't last long.

What do they have to play for?
      Am I missing something?

They have the shortest odds of any team this week to win, but even if you agree with this it seems it is tricky to nail an individual you would expect to start and do well.

Ok maybe not Trossard then, still think Arsenal can score some goals in that game.

No idea what my priority is here:

    De Gea
    TAA, Shaw, Trippier
    Salah(c), Mac10, BrunoF, Mahrez, Mitoma
    Alvarez, Haaland

(Kepa, Solanke, Botman, Estupinan) 1FT, 0.8

    a) Mac/Mah/Mit > Eze
    b) Bruno, Alvarez > Jones/Rice, Kane (-4)
    c) Haaland > Kane (c)
    d) I could go on indefinitely - no clue

This whole situation with players being rested is a complete farce. I am winning my ML, but I can see that changing on Sunday thanks to blind luck. When an entire season of skilful FPL team management is undone on the final weekend by ridiculous line-up changes, something is not right. The rules need to change: either end the FPL season at GW37, or change the GW38 deadline to kickoff time and give everyone at least 3 free transfers.

The deadline needs to go back if anything. 24 hours to end all this BS. It may increase the FPL servers uptime too

14 points ML lead... so nervous. I'm probably going to blow this lead and it's just going to be lottery in the end.

Only 1 FT (1.3 ITB) and don't really want to take any hits at this stage.

    Steele (Martinez)
Gabriel - Shaw* - Varane (Trips, Botman)
Salah - Mahrez - Mitoma - Fernandes (MacA).
    Alvarez - Haaland - Wilson.

    Captain who? Change anything?
