Thoughts on Foden? With Mahrez gone will he get more game time or are Grealish, B Silva and Alvarez better picks?

    Which GK & MID pairing?!

    A) Martinez & Fernandes
    B) Pickford & Rashford

Sorry don’t like it. Edouard not a good option as second striker, Enciso minutes will be subject to rotation, as may Foden. Botman fixtures poor first few weeks, Ake minutes not assured if Gvardiol signs, no reason to think Everton defence going to be better.

I think someone that makes the number of saves he does and in one of the best defences in the league is going to be very hard for most to pass up

I'm sure Arteta will even rotate his GKs. Having multiple players for multiple positions was still fine but now he's tinkering too much

Rotating two number 1 keepers never works, the backup keeper role is a niche position in a squad and tends to suit a young, up and coming keeper or a veteran.

The flaw to that argument is that he’s not going to be making the same number of saves now that he’s playing for the league’s best defence.

I don't disagree with your point in theory, but Arsenal do actually tend to concede a fair few shots on target in most games. He's also much more comfortable on the ball than Ramsdale and has far better distribution which would aid bps (Ramsdale already does well with that mind)

I've had him as a placeholder in case of something like this.

Don’t understand this at all - why would him or Ramsdale be happy playing backup?

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

I don't think either would, but looking at spending £30m-£40m on another keeper surely acknowledges that Ramsdale isn't good enough. On too many occasions he seems to have a rush of blood to the head and does silly things and, while not as regularly as before, he does make mistakes every now and again

          • 11 Years

Yeah I don’t rate Ramsdale that highly and in the pressure moments you can see his decision making is poor.

I might have to disagree with you (for once!) on the RIP thing. There's other factors besides his individual quality which I think would dampen his FPL appeal at Arsenal. People will say it takes up a valuable spot on a GK, but even more importantly I think Arsenal have just become too good for their GK to hit the top of the rankings. Only City conceded fewer shots last season, and while Ramsdale's 17 save points are at least respectable compared to Ederson's 5, it still ranks 13th so they'd need a healthy bump in CS - 5 more (on top of 14) - to reach 160pts if the save & bonus points remain about even

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 3 Years
        9 months, 3 days ago

All fair points. I guess I feel that they are likely to improve clean sheets with him there compared to Ramsdale, and while the save pts are good but not great, Raya in general has a much better save percentage and that should improve things too. Ramsdale also had a tendency to do extremely well with bps even in games where he made 0-2 saves so I can see Raya doing that too. I can see a fair few switching from Gabriel/Saliba to Raya and 4.5def

I suspect Brentford want a transfer fee and it will become another social media saga involving Arsenal. If it has legs?

That could happen, but swap deals don't happen anymore because of FFP rules and advantages of having two seperate transfer.

My team structure seems to hinge on three major (unanswered) variables.

    1) Kane staying or leaving Spurs - if he leaves then Richarlison becomes essential. If Kane stays then the valuable midfield slot goes to someone else.
    2) Is Areola first choice - if so I go with Onana/Areola rotation. If not then i'll just start with Pickford/£4.0m and spend the £0.5m outfield.
    3) Is Nunez the main CF for Liverpool - if so I choose him over Jesus and have 2 x Arsenal mids.

    1. tricpic
      • 14 Years

      Agree with all this.
Points 1 and 2 collide. For me it’s Richarlison and Pickford or Mitoma and Onana. That’s the last big decision; I think I’ve already decided to risk a Darwin pick.

    2. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      9 months, 3 days ago

It's possible 2 or even 3 of these variables will not be answered until after the season starts.
If Kane is at Spurs on 11th August, will you have him? Because there will still be 2 weeks before the window closes.
Nunez may start GW1 but be dropped, or vice versa.
There's some serious tension behind the scenes at West Ham. Note they've received $105m and aren't spending any of it because the manager and recruitment are at odds. Moyes could walk, and a new manager has different ideas about the #1 position.

Interesting point about WHU. I also suspect their defence looks a bit concerning/targetable. Conceded a ridiculous number of shots against Spurs and Soucek as the sole DM doesn't seem right

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years

I initially was completely sure I'd punt on Paqueta, but even before the Rice sale was confirmed I saw a few West Ham fans they thought this was going to be an awful season for them, so I'm just keeping clear of them

      2. LangerznMash
        • 7 Years

If Kane is still at Spurs then no way i'm getting Richarlison. Probably smart to wait until GW3 anyway and avoid tricky opening two fixtures. I just fear a rapid price rise if Richarlison starts against Brentford.
Fair point on Nunez, he is always going be a bit of a punt based on gametime, but has a really high ceiling.
I think Pickford matches (or outscores) Onana for opening 8 GWs and the fixture tickers support this.

    3. Count of Monte Hristo

I hope Kane leaves so we can take advantage of a 7.0 Richarlison as a midfielder. Darwin is in for me, got a strong feeling he will be deadly this season.

Got a nice-ish team for this sort of scenario.

        Onana
        Stones Gabriel Estupiñán
        Saka Richarlison Fernandes Rashford
        Haaland Darwin Jackson
        Areola // Chilwell 4.5 4.0

Not sure how I feel starting with Darwin/Richarlison is the only thing. Would they outperform an ARS/BHA combo? (For example.) - Although Darwin can move to Nkunku v. soon if need be.

Understand Chelsea have internally decided on targeting Brighton Robert Sánchez as the goalkeeper to provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

But as of last week, no contact made yet with player’s side. #CFC #BHAFC

    https://twitter.com/NathGissing/status/1685650020102541312

Totally get we could do with a more 'proven' backup given Mendy left but Sanchez doesn't excite me very much. At least it would force Kepa to stay on his toes.

I don't think we're in for Raya really. Poch has talked up Kepa in preseason.

If we're sounding 40 mil on a player you'd have thought it wouldn't be to bench him.

Just watched City v Atletico. It was 0-0 until each team made 9 changes and then the goals came, ending 1-2 but nothing to learn from that period, other than some good flashes from Kovacic & Rico Lewis. Phillips & Cancelo were poor.

In the first half City played fairly similarly to last season but with a weird tweak - Stones inverted from RCB to DM in possession and Walker stayed high and wide in a RW Mahrez-style role, so it was more of a 2-2-5-1:

    Ederson
    Dias Laporte
    Stones Rodri
    Walker Foden Bernardo Alvarez Grealish
    Haaland

Walker (who has been captain during pre-season) offered zero threat going forward and was there only to stretch the play in the centre, with Grealish doing the same on the left but offering a bit more threat in terms of the occasional dribble & cross.

Foden, Bernardo & Alvarez all buzzed around in the centre as three no10s, interchanging positions and linking up well. Obv you'd expect KDB (who was on the bench) to come in for Alvarez and the quality of passing & shooting would increase. Bernardo was slightly further back pulling the strings and played some great through balls + a few good turns to make space. Foden & Alvarez more often on the edge of the box and both had decent efforts on goal.

Laporte looked off the pace and uncomfortable with the unique demands of the LCB role in that system - Ake (or if signed, Gvardiol) will surely be ahead of him. Dias played the 90 mins and scored City's only goal from a corner late on.

Haaland looked his usual self but didn't have much space, Atleti clogged up the middle effectively and you would think this will be a problem for City moving forward unless the players hugging the touchline can offer some threat - e.g. moving Foden to RW. The other players that end up with space are the DMs & LCB - Stones, Rodri & Laporte regularly found themselves with shooting/crossing opportunities.

I'd be surprised if City didn't sign someone for the RW spot, with Foden clearly looking to come inside more often. That being said, given how crucial Bernardo appears to be for one of the no8 roles now (he has been offered a new contract so may now stay), it looks as things stand that Foden is the only good option for the RW spot, where he excelled at the start of last season (e.g. the hat trick vs Utd). At 7.5 he could be good value.

From an FPL perspective it's all a bit underwhelming though, Haaland is the only nailed + good option and everyone has him. I would consider Foden and Stones for differentials and both look set to start the season. Alvarez at 6.5 is obv a great option if he looks like he's nailed down a place but I just don't see that happening with KDB around. This post is basically a long way of saying not very much!

It's a good write up but I'm standing firm that it was 2 up top with Alvarez playing with Haaland on the left.

The SofaScore heat map shows this, even though he dropped back into the City half on more occasions.

              Yeah! 😉

My right side isn't aligned and those who drop back like Walker and Foden in this role average more central positions, even though in reality they're at both ends of the pitch more often so by definition must be putting more leg work in.

Yeah it's possible, and it's obviously a fluid system that responds to the game state - and with Atletico clogging the middle so much it may have been that Alvarez intended to stay up top but dropped into a 10 role to find space.

Either way, I think he is set to share time with KDB & Haaland. KDB played no10, basically alongside Haaland, in some games last season (e.g. vs Arsenal). And in others was a bit deeper - this was again dependent on the opponent & game state. And when he played Alvarez filled in this role - unless coming on/deputising for Haaland as the main striker.

I would love Alvarez to be an option, and maybe he will, but I'm not convinced he's found his own role in the side yet and will continue being an understudy for the KDB & Haaland roles. And with both Haaland & KDB fit (KDB showed off his fitness in some open training sessions in the stadium yesterday), Alvarez isn't looking like he's worth the gamble in FPL yet

Have Bruno and Tonali played in the same team yet in pre season and if yes has Bruno been more advanced?

    1. Hairy Potter
      • 9 Years

They've played one half together, against Villa in an experimental 3-4-2-1. Both didn't look very good TBH.

Bruno played his normal deep lying position against Brighton. Tonali has played as the right sided 8 against Rangers and Chelsea. Tonali looked like he needs some work to fit in with how Newcastle play with and without the ball.

I'd imagine, unless something changes in the friendlies next weekend, that Bruno remains deep and Joelinton plus another takes the other two midfield slots.

Will probably be a bench player again this season. He can play as an 8 or winger so should get regular cameos.

There is an outside chance he could start GW1, if Longstaff and Willock are still injured and Tonali needs time to settle into the team.

There are just *so* many good players ahead of him in the pecking order. I see there needing to be multiple injuries for him to get starts. Just wait until that happens to buy him. No need to try to get ahead of the curve on this one.

This team is bad right? Just seems so tempting to have one bad starter to make the rest of my players great.

    4.5
    Gabriel - Shaw - Estupinan
    Salah - Foden - Saka - Bruno
    Haaland - Jesus

Then rotate through one of 4.0 def, 4.0 def, 4.5 mid, 4.5 forward each week for the last starter.

The template doesn't have a fodder player in the starting 11 though does it? Notice I only put 10 people in my lineup, and have 0 left ITB.

Not bad at all. I'd suggest Shaw's numbers aren't strong enough to justify his price 5.5m and downgrading could give you better options for rotation. Plenty of solid 5.0 options and rotating two 4.5s could be a great option (Pau, Botman, Henry and Pinnock are all good picks imo). Only concern would be the lack of flexibility in terms of how budget is spread.

Yeah cheers. He's just a bit of a BPS magnet, and has two easy home fixtures in the first three.

        Could go Shaw+4.5 mid to 4.5 defender+Enciso.

Or could go Shaw+4.0 defender to 5.0 defender+4.5 defender. The problem with this one is that outside of Arsenal and Estupinan, there aren't a pile of 5.0 defenders I particularly like.

        1. gart888
          • 9 Years

          So...

          4.5
Gabriel Estupinan Tarkowski (with an eye to swap him to Botman after the first 4ish GW)
          Salah Saka Bruno Foden Enciso
          Haaland Jesus

          Fodder bench.

This actually looks pretty good if Enciso is getting reliable starts for Brighton given their early fixtures.

Could swap Foden, Jesus or my keeper to similarly priced players in better form. There's lots of useful lateral moves with transfers.

This team is obviously flawed trying to squeeze in Salah while keeping Saka and Bruno, but I don't think the lack of things to do with early transfers is the issue.

Anyone 'in better form' is likely to have risen though .... and already having duds means you're just creating headaches

I'd take out Shaw for 5.0 or even 4.5 and upgrade with that 1m ..... you don't need Shaw at 5.5 IMO

Yeah, already considering the above. I just don't really like the cheap mid options. Between 4.5 and 6.5 seems a bit of a wasteland. Not really crazy about the 5.0 defender options either once Estupinan and an Arsenal guy are off the table.

Just to elaborate as I am such a troll:

Areola is highly owned and unlikely to start so will drop like a stone. Keep an eye on it
TAA won't keep many clean sheets and I didn't like what I seen today in the friendly. I think there are better options
I genuinely don't like Man U as an attacking team and I think there are better alternatives who are better attackers or in a better attacking team. I would be interested in the new striker, price dependent
Maddison is a wait and see with first 2 games and I prefer Rich, if Kane leaves
I think Jesus is a rotation/minutes risk and I just don't think he is a good FPL asset
Wissa, as per below, is a minutes/rotation risk and I just don't like Brentford
Better options than Guehi and Baldock

I could go through them 1 by 1 on why but that doesn't mean people need to change their team.
