The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League (UCL) begins next Tuesday – and so does the competition’s official Fantasy game.

We’ll have plenty of coverage on UCL Fantasy over the next week in preparation for the big kick-off, as well as articles throughout the season.

If you’re new to the game or just need a reminder of the rules, check out our ‘how to play’ guide below.

SIGN UP TO PLAY UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FANTASY HERE

Our series of preview articles continues by looking at the best UCL Fantasy goalkeepers on offer.

With a squad of 15 players and substitutions possible between the evenings of a Matchday, having a playing goalkeeper from each half of the group draw is a great way to maximise points. This way, you know that there’ll be an option on both days.

It should be said that many defenders offer more routes to points thanks to potential attacking returns and recovery points. It’s for this reason that many UCL Fantasy managers stick to a combined price of €8.5m-€10m for their two goalkeepers.

With that caveat ringing in your ears, here’s a guide to who’s who.

GROUPS E-H

FPL Gameweek 15 preview: Goalscorer and clean sheet odds

Ederson (€6m) – Manchester City

Manchester City’s fixture against Crvena Zvezda is one of the most appealing of Matchday 1 and many UCL Fantasy managers will be wanting to triple up on the reigning champions. With “Pep Roulette” always a risk, Ederson is probably the safest bet to start the season with as he comes with less risk of being rotated. He’s a six-pointer just waiting to happen.

Marc-André ter Stegen (€6m) – Barcelona

The La Liga champions have a very easy group from a defensive point of view. That, and the fact they were by far the team with the fewest goals conceded in the top five leagues last season, make the German international a solid premium option for the entire group stage phase.

Diogo Costa (€5.5m) – Porto

All the UCL Fantasy managers who owned Diogo Costa last season are probably considering him for this campaign, too. Despite Porto being knocked out during the round of 16, he ended up finishing as the second-highest-scoring goalkeeper only behind finalist Andre Onana. Porto are a competent defensive side as it is but the Portuguese can add to his points tally with an occasional penalty save or even an assist. The fixture against Barcelona in Matchday 2 can also be avoided with the very common strategy of an early Limitless chip.

Janis Blaswich (€4.5m) – RB Lepizig

The best budget option from this side of the draw. Leipzig are not known for their defensive proficiency but Young Boys and Crvena Zvezda are easy enough fixtures, and the clash against Manchester City (it’s best not to remember what happened last season against the Citizens…) falls in Matchday 2 – which again furthers the case for a Limitless chip in that round.

Ivan Provedel (€5.0m) – Lazio

Group E is an interesting one, for sure, and the match-ups between Lazio, Atletico Madrid and Feyenoord could go either way. With Jan Oblak (€6.0m) arguably outclassed by ter Stegen and Ederson as a premium option, Lazio’s shot-stopper gets the nod here. Provedel kept the most clean sheets in Serie A last season and scooped the division’s “best goalkeeper” award at the end of the campaign.

GROUPS A-D

Kepa Arrizabalaga (€5.0m) – Real Madrid

Kepa was supposed to compete with Robert Sanchez at Chelsea when he was priced at only €5.0m in UCL Fantasy but an unlucky injury to Thibaut Courtois has landed him a move to the Spanish capital. Real’s backline is not as strong with the Belgian and Eder Militao both injured, but it’s extremely rare to have such a nailed cheap option from a team expected to go all the way into the final stages of the competition.

Yann Sommer (€4.5m) – Inter

Another player who was criminally underpriced because he was expected to be a backup option before moving to another team. Sommer has started his Inter career very well, and he’s yet to concede a single goal in Serie A this season. Inter also proved to be an extremely solid side in 2022/23, going all the way to the final while registering the most clean sheets in the tournament.

Samuel Soares (€4.0m) – Benfica

Odysseas Vlachodimos moved from Benfica to Nottingham Forest on transfer deadline day, leaving the Portuguese giants with Soares as their main goalkeeper. Benfica share their group with Inter, RB Salzburg and Real Sociedad. With Soares being so cheap, he’s a viable option as an enabler to facilitate a move for the premium UCL Fantasy forwards. He’s also capable of scoring six points in at least a couple of games.

Marko Dmitrovic (€4.5m) – Sevilla

Dmitrovic is another option who could rival Sommer and Soares as the go-to budget goalkeeper from this side of the draw. Sevilla are always a very decent team in UEFA competitions, and although their defence doesn’t look as strong as Inter’s or Benfica’s, the Serbian goalie is a viable option for those Fantasy managers not playing a Limitless in Matchday 2 – as his tough match-ups occur in Matchdays 3-4.

Mitoma -> Mbuemo the obvious move this week?

    Onana, Turner
    Chilwell Estupinian, Udogie, Beyer, Kabore
    Rashford, Bruno, Saka, Maddison, Mitoma
    Haaland, Watkins, Mubama

You could keep Mitoma for GW5 vs UTD defence and bring Mbeumo GW6. I am bringing in Mbeumo -4. It is for Ahamada so good riddance to him.

That doesn't seem at all obvious to me with the current state of Man Utd - being tripled up on them looks like your main issue to me

Bruno for me. I know his stats look decent but its really just the pen & that horrible miss v Spurs that's propping them up. Plus I think there's more uncertainty over his role than Rashford's now (Hojlund should enable Rash to play LW, whereas injuries + Sancho/Antony might see Bruno shuffled around)

I'd rather just go Kabore (not nailed, bad defence) to Henry and roll

Starting Xi looks fine for this week, imo, unless you're tempted by Bruno to Son

Baldock and Osula flagged leaves only Kabore on my bench. With Kabore not nailed Osula > Archer looks to be the best move for cover (and its a move I would make anyway if on a wc tbf). however it would be for a hit. Normally a hit to change bench players is something I would scoff at, however going with such a weak bench concerns me and with uncertainty around the likes of Estupinan the risk is enough to make me seriously consider doing it. Team copied below for ref:

    Turner (Pickford)
    Gusto Estupinan Chilwell
    Salah Saka Son Maddison Eze
    Haaland Alvarez

So, go with this starting 11 and risk it or Osula > Archer for -4?

Not worth it for a hit

    2. Ze_Austin

      I think you're risking 0 points vs -4 points

If everybody in your starting XI ends up on the pitch, even if it's just for 1 minute, then you won't need your bench, meaning the -4 will bring nothing in return this GW

If someone's actually injured or red-flagged in the starting XI, then the risk would be more of 0 points vs -2 points (if the replacement doesn't get negative points), as appearance points would claw half of the hit back, and then a chance of other returns

This is why I never take hits for my bench, no matter how concerned I am. If it's a combined move to raise funds or change formations, then maybe. For this one, I'd just risk the 0 points

Heck, Kabore isn't nailed but will probably still get some minutes even if benched, so it's more like 1 point vs -4 points...

Sound advice thankyou, and if I am honest what I was thinking anyway. Archer is tempting though, us Villa fans rate him highly and could see him getting something at Spurs. But, even then the upside of +2 does admittedly make it a bad punt. Appreciate your feedback, cheers/

What uncertainty around Estupinan? He's as nailed as they get at BHA and has a decent record of starting after IB / international travel as far as I remember.

I wouldn't take the hit - save that move for your WC

Just like the rumours about Son last night.
Even after he played 91 minutes of the match last night there was still people on here afterwards fretting that he was injured.
Cannot find a single mention of an Estupinan injury anywhere on the net.

To answer the OP's question, it's definitely not worth a hit to replace Osula this week imo.

I know you want Son but are you giving him the armband?

Unpopular opinion with him moving back to the left, but I'd rather get rid of Rashford than Bruno tbh

Playing Turner over Onana might be better?

This might not be the week to get rid of Gabriel (eve)? Can you do Rashford and Baldock ➡️ Son and Udogie?

Armband is unlikely but could be tempting. Rash >> Son works but not the Baldock move. Not sure that’s worth a -4 anyways with only 1FT. Hmmm

I would recommend that, especially as I did:

                  Baldock ➡️ Udogie
                  Mitoma ➡️ Maddison
                  Rashford ➡️ Son(C) (-4)

                  Pray for me lol

Haha ok. Its a close one & I'm largely basing this off 'feel' but I think Arsenal are going to concede. They have a shoddy recent record at Goodison. So I think I would start Estupinan over Gabriel myself. Think Brighton will win 3-1 or something like that & should be decent potential for Estu attacking return

Should I wildcard? —-I’ve already taken a -4 to get in Son for Bruno before price rises etc.. It would be to sort out keepers, Newcastle assets in, slight revamp defence and can take back the hit.

    Turner
    Cash - Chillwell - Gusto
    Son - Salah - Mbuemo - Saka - Sterling
    Alvarez - Haaland (C)

Anderson - VD Veen - Archer - Kabore

even though i would class myself as a liverpool and general football fanatic it is alien to me as to what would possess a person to continually boo or berate a player based on nothing other than you dont think he or she is very good . its the same with social media. even when karius was chucking in goals against madrid in a champions league final if I saw him I dont think i could bring myself to say anything other than maybe hello?he didnt do it on purpose. he just froze in a big game. it still hurts and il probably never forgive him but im not going to tell him that. he will carry it for the rest of his life. i remember when davison sanchez came on for spurs when stellini was in charge and the second he got the ball he was booed then a few moments later he made a mistake, and then another so you could actually blame the supporters in a sense for those. as grahm taylor said re john barnes "hey your talking about another human being here....."

Currently got the armband on Son, and its just occurred to me how a few seasons ago what a pain in the arris he was to captain (never delivered for me when I capped him and I recall it was the same for many on here). I may well wimp out and retreat back to the Norwegian before the deadline.

I think in the season before last it was quite tricky choosing between Son/Kane as (C) at times - I often went for Son in away games where he'd have more space to run in behind but I think he ended up hauling more often in softer home fixtures.

I'm still quite undecided about this week too - can go either Maddi/Son depending on tactical read, or just Haaland since I'm still a little bit sceptical that WHU are overperforming so far

      1. CRAZY TRAIN

I think with West Ham its more a case of them underperforming last season. This season they are looking much more solid and I can see them giving City a good game at home, which for me makes a very good case for Son or Maddison (I have both).

I would wait on it. I see the temptation in going early as everyone will pile on him as soon as he hauls, but my impression of his cameo v Arsenal is that he might need a bit of integration time still. I'm thinking especially of that overexuberant run down the middle when Rash was leading a break, where Hojlund failed to offer a pass or create space to attack, and Rash threw up his arms in frustration.
