While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

what happens if Rooney has an absolute blinder and is more than 12.0 and Torres has a stinker and is less than 10.0 - what will all you GW3 changes do then?

More serious answer. Ba or Cisse fixtures look okayish for the foreseeable at that point so could go that route and upgrade elsewhere.

Prices only change after midnight (and there are sites out there that track transfers in/out) so you'll have plenty of time to switch before any price changes (though it could happen before Torres' second game)

The more interesting way of looking at it is for those who consider Torres a viable long-term option.

Now Torres is going to drop in value GW1 regardless of how he or Rooney performs (unless the latter picks up an injury or something) because enough people have this transfer planned. Even if you want to keep Torres in your team long-term you're going to have to sub him out unless you're happy losing that value, and that only amplifies the effect.

Now, as well as the 'savvy' people transferring him out GW1, how many more will there be who load up FPL GW3 and see Torres has no game and sub him out then? Further drops.

By GW4 I think we could definitely see a 9.5 or lower priced Torres, which is a _VERY_ interesting proposition indeed.

Don't agree with this. The planning, FFS typed player is a minority.

It all depends on how Torres and Rooney do. If Torres scores a hatrick v Wigan then he'll rise in price as loads of casual players will transfer him in.

I have 2.5m in the pot as I am starting Lamps instead of Hazard for that very reason and not sure I want to take a 4 pointer on GW2. If Torres explodes will have Rooney-Aguero-Torres and put in a 4.5 bench player for Lamps.

Having major re-thinks on my team. Looking at the last couple of years strikers have been the big points scorers and this year there looks to be an abundance of quality proven midfielders in the mid price range. Players such as:-

Mclean surely 150+ points based on last seasons 101 with half a season.
    N'Zogbia 125 – 150 points (had 167 2010/11 & 146 2009/10)
Pienaar 100+, the main man at everton just under 120’s in 2008/09 & 2009/10)

Using players like this I could squeeze Tevez, Rooney & Torres into my forward line and Torres could be switched to Ade (should be at spurs this week) for GW2.

So after all that, what team is better guys

    A.
    de Gea, Federici
Zabaleta, Hangeland, Cole A, Cuellar, Demel
    Lamps, Bale, Pienaar, McClean, Noble
    Rooney, Tevez, Graham

    B.
    de Gea, Federici
Zabaleta, Cuellar, Cole A, Tierney, Demel
    N'Zogbia, Bale, Pienaar, McClean, Kacaniklic
    Rooney, Tevez, Torres

I like B. Anything in the bank? As you only have two Chelsea (so not as much pressure to get them our for GW3) you could start with Aguero, Tevez, Torrez and then decide whether to switch Aguero to Rooney. Just a thought.

I prefer A because the defenders rotate better on fixture difficulty (notably Hangeland and Cuellar).

Also, I think Graham is going to do well, and him and Noble have easy fixtures for a good while, allowing you to concentrate any subs elsewhere.

However, I would have Torres for GW1 and then do the usual upgrade to Rooney GW2. That would give you an extra 8 points just from dgw players, with the rest covered by easy fixtures anyway.

Whilst they aren't the tightest at the back, they clearly have a better shout at a CS than the alternatives over the 2 games as you can hardly play the full City defence. Plus they have the extra appearance points.

One of my first names into my team and hasn't moved out of there in any draft that has a 4.5 defender in it.
Attacking player with a lot of talent who may play OOP sometimes. Fixtures are a mixed bag but then he's a 4.5 defender you don't have to play him every game.

Why is no one going for defoe? hes a steal at 7.5!
he played 1300 minutes and got 92 points, which is pretty amamzing!
and with no other recognizable striker at spurs and the ade deal getting stalled he will get a lot of game time!

i know this may sound stupid but would you not have defenders and midfielders from the same team [unless city, manu, liverpool] so you would spread the potential for clean sheet bonus whether it would be 4 [def] or 1 [mid] ?

Not stupid, but I reckon it comes out in the wash--some days you get both, some days not. Spreading it around just means you also take on the chance of one clean sheet but not the other, etc.

Got 3mil in the bank atm...2 for Rooney but one just sitting there.

    Friedel - Federic

    Cole - Zabaleta - S. Taylor - Cuellar - Tierney

    Bale - Lampard - Dyer - Noble - Guthrie

    Aguero - Torres - Graham

Obvious choice seems upgrading Dyer or Guthrie, but I only really need the latter for the first week short term and he's good value with the double, whilst I think it's worth backing Swansea heavily with their fixtures. Meaning maybe Dyer > Michu is the logical move, or Noble > Nolan if Kevin is actually fit.
