Now a stone lighter after shedding his golf course weight, Carlos Tevez has once again emerged as a key player for Manchester City and Fantasy managers alike. The Argentine, who spent much of last season in exile after a spat with manager Roberto Mancini, was the star of last Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Chelsea, scoring a superb effort and overshadowing his compatriot, Sergio Aguero. But can he continue that form and keep the more expensive Aguero out of our Fantasy lineups?

One of the biggest attractions is the price difference between the pair, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, where Aguero has been priced at 11.5m in compared to Tevez’s 9m price tag. However, the difference in the Sky game is less marked with Tevez priced at 9.4m compared to Aguero’s 9.9m.

Another attraction is the post Community Shield comments from Roberto Mancini about Tevez being “a very important player” for City. With the side’s penalty taking, maverick striker Mario Balotelli still lacking match fitness and Edin Dzeko still out of favour as a starting striker, starts seem assured for Tevez for Man City’s opening games at least. But with Balotelli likely to be used sparingly during August, Aguero is set to retain penalty taking duties, arguably adding further weight to his hefty price tag.

Mark says…
I’ve been hesitant to consider Tevez over Aguero, for the simple reason that it seems inevitable that Roberto Mancini will look to give Mario Balotelli pitch time. My other concern is Mancini’s formation. The 3-4-1-2 looks to be a winning formula right now but the City boss is already indicating that he’ll abandon it once the real business gets underway. Even if it remains, I’m not sure how he builds both David Silva and Samir Nasri into his lineup, whilst keeping two strikers. I’m pretty sure they’ll be times when he’ll push Silva or Toure forward and abandon the idea of a pairing up front. For me, Aguero looks the most secure, regardless of the tactical scenario.

In the short-term, however, I have to admit I’m enormously tempted by the slimline Tevez. His goal and performance on Sunday was a clear indication of form and confidence and it seems nailed on that he’ll line up against Southampton. There’s every chance he could again steal the thunder from Aguero in that game and that 2.5 FPL difference can be invested to some effect elsewhere in our lineups. Will I be 100% that Tevez will take the field in a few Gameweek’s time? That’s the issue. For me, Aguero is a fire and forget option, by going with Tevez, it’s a question of cashing in on the short-term benefits and managing your way out of the situation later. After Sunday’s showing and the noise from the City camp, I might just be willing to take that on.

Andy says…
When I look at comparing two figures like Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero there is one thing that is always at the forefront of my mind – the Fantasy captaincy. The armband is the biggest duty for Fantasy Managers on any given Gameweek and, if I think I’m going to be spreading it about the Etihad stadium with regularity, I’ll make sure to pick the player that I think is not only most consistent and most likely to start games. That man, for me, without a shadow of a doubt, is Sergio Aguero.

However, in the first couple of months of the new season I really don’t see too many of Roberto Mancini’s men pushing the issue when it comes to captaincy. Given that inference I have to hark to the other dominant factor: price. While I think Aguero is more assured of pitch time, it doesn’t even begin to make up for the extra 2.5 in your pocket by opting for Tevez. As a player I prefer Aguero – exponentially so – but for the first couple of months of the season I’ll be managing with my head and leaving my heart at the door. Tevez will be in my team.

Paul Says…
It’s impossible to say over the long-term but, right now, he certainly looks to be. Tevez’s attitude has been praised by both Roberto Mancini and David Platt and the City boss has already stated he expects him to be an important player in the season to come – a sure sign of how he plans to utilise him. Aguero’s phenomenal debut season was, in part, helped by a number of factors –Tevez’s determination to force a move away from the Etihad and subsequent strop in the Allianz Arena, Mario Balotelli’s indiscipline and Edin Dzeko’s loss of form all meant that last year’s summer signing was too crucial to be left out at any point. Now that Tevez is 100% both physically and mentally, Mancini may well feel he can afford to slightly restrict Aguero’s game time when Mario Balotelli is fully-fit.

Personally, I feel that Tevez and Aguero could be handed roughly the same number of starts, with one or the other dropping out for Balotelli on occasion, while Edin Dzeko is mostly reduced to the role of impact sub. Bearing in mind this was a player who was priced at 12.0 at the start of last season, I reckon Tevez looks exceptional value at the moment for 9.0 and that 2.5 saving over Aguero has certainly won me over for just now.

For anyone interested. Tevez comments after community shield:

"I'm returning feeling renewed. I'm really up for having a great season. I'm better now and only thinking about playing football," Tevez shared.

"I feel useful and valued and that is fundamental for me. It's been a long time since I've scored a goal like that (against Chelsea), like the ones I used to score when I was at Boca, and this speaks of the confidence I have."

The forward then went on to reveal that City’s Argentine connection is also bringing him joy.

"City is already Argentinian and that makes me very happy. In the dressing room, with Zaba and Kun (Aguero) we teach things in Spanish to everyone. It's the team's second language," Tevez stated.

    that means attack will be

    Bale Nzog Pineear Noble XXXXX
    Tevez Torres Graham

who should I get to fill the hole? I have 9m (excluding the torres upgrade fund)
is it better to get a 9m mid, or just spend 6.5m and upgrade tevez>Kun??

Just to throw a spanner in the works here. Although Mancini has been laying 3-4-1-2 (with Nasri and possibly Silva playing in the hole) there's no real reason he couldn't switch to playing 3-4-2-1.

In that formation the 2 would most likely be 2 of Silva, Nasri and Tevez and the 1 being Aguero or Balotelli.

If Valencia needs to play RB then Nani will go to the right and Young in his place. Kagawa may also be replaced with Welbeck as he has an international in Japan tonight and may not be able to start against Everton.

i am seriously thinking about setting up a gwk1 team and then wildcarding for gwk2.

    reasons for it:

    a) there are no massive fixture swings throughout the season, this seems to be the best with arsenal city chelsea and fulham all starting with easy fixtures then a tough one straight after, whereas spurs swansea and utd are the opposite

    b) i should know if rvp has signed for utd and can go with him and rooney gwk2

    c) i will know who is likely to start centre back for spurs

    d) will also know the preferred defensive lineups of the lower teams

    e) the season goes on a week longer with no euros or olympics so there are likely to be less double gameweeks to take advantage of later in the season

i know there are downsides but i feel if i pick a team going all out for gwk1 i can gain an advantage both in points and team value

    thoughts?

It's always risky to plan playing wildcard early on. Wildcard can be extremely useful later on.
Things change very quickly, you never know you would want to wildcard again in GW3.

Theres no way u will gain enough information from ONE gw, lineups can still change (friendlies today can change starting lineups gw1, then back to "normal"), and with another international break coming soon. Spurs defence could be a mess the whole season.
I just.. no, I cant see any point at all to pick a team now and use a wc right away.. thats, madness.. sry.. Honestly, I cant see one single upside with using a wc that early

Have to agree, you are playing a team for one week but can't say for sure who is going to play (Man City formation, players with different levels of fitness and the international matches) and if you don't maximise things for this game week you have truly wasted the wild card.

You transfer in all the players whose prices will rise, then trade out the ones you don't want before the start of the next GW, then get all the players you want last.

So you're setting up your team now for players whose price you feel will rise, as opposed to players you want to keep for the season?

Basically, you transfer in all the players who will rise during that week, then keep them, until Saturday morning where then you transfer out the ones which you don't want and choose the ones actual that you want.

No no, when on a WC you can take advantage of prices by putting them in your team then selling when theyve rose 0.2.

Yeah what Willis said. Not a stupid question at all. Bring in the players on the rise until they rise 0.2 then sell for 0.1 profit

I think if you were going to wildcard early, then setting a team up for the first few weeks, then do it in the first international break might be more worthwhile.

Say having Aguero and Tevez for the first three, then make the shift over to Utd/Spurs.

You aren't likely to make any money within the 1st week bar the odd one or two 0.1's IMO.

i was under the impression that loads of transfers usually happened after gwk1? i remember albrighton going up 0.3 a couple of seasons ago after 2 assists in his first game

obviously last year was different due to the free wc

making the shift to utd and spurs after gwk3 would be too late i think. as a fantasy football geek who religiously plays the fixtures i cant see a better swing in fixtures all season, plus you have the added advantage of teh double gameweek too

I know that there are transfers made and 0.1's are to be had, but you're looking for the 0.2's so you're making money.

I can't recall anyone going up 0.3 in the first GW, but then the price rise system changed last year where you only needed 30k for someone to rise so it could be different.

Ok, I think Im settled (and I appreciate I got no comments the last time I posted this, but Im going to say Im reposting from the hope it got lost on a page rather than the obsession to have validation from my peers - which I appreciate is not unheard of in RMT'ers... 🙂 )

    Schwarzer (Green)
Ivanovic (c), Gunter, Tierney (Demel, Stam)
    Carzorla, Bale, Gerrard, Mata, Kagawa,
    Tevez, Bent (Vaughan)

Should I drop Carzorla and Vaughan and replace them with Britton and Podolski? Gives me .5 for Stam - Cuellar/Fabio? Other thoughts about such a heavy midfield?

Good Q. He'll finally play further forward under Rogers and take fk/pens. I appreciate Gerrard isnt on the best run of fixtures, but whilst I wouldn't describe him as fixture proof, as captain I would expect his rotation to be minimal and his impact to be substantial. I think he may be a good differential early on.

Its different, which at this stage is no bad thing but a few ?s

      - Obviously you playing 3-5-2 every week but if Aguero/Rooney start to score loads you could easily get left behind and need 2 transfers to get one of them

      - Reading across you mid is nice but too much imo. One of those 4.0 defenders should be Hangeland/ Newcaslte defender/ Cellular. Leave Carzorla for now, get a cheapie and upgrade Vaughan and a defender

I think Vaughan will do well for Norwich this year. He's also had a good pre-season. But I appreciate what I think and what actually happens may, on this occasion, be different. No doubt Ill have another look and make even more changes at lunch.

My defence does indeed suck though. There is no avoiding it.

And no, not really.. they are getting older and not as good as they used to be.. valuation looks good to me with Gerrard being the more expensive. Off they two, I really think Gerrard will do best.. most offensive CAM role in 4-3-3, looked great in the euros+preseason.

Seen the odd bit of talk about Fulham’s defence in the last day or so, thought I’d try and give a clearer view of it. Our first choice back 4 will be Riether, Hughes, Hangeland, Riise. Senderos hasn’t had any pre-season as he’s been injured. Hughes missed our last friendly with ‘a knock’ that I would expect him to recover from for Saturday. A few people have favoured Hangeland in the hope he reprises his heroic goal-scoring season but there’s nothing to suggest to me that this is likely (nothing to suggest the opposite either of course, just don’t count on it is all I’m saying.) I think we may be hard to predict in terms of clean sheets this season anyway, with a few less at home but a couple more on the road. As for Frei vs Kacaniklic, both are supremely talented young players and a joy to watch. Frei is more likely to get some starts but there’ll be gametime for both. Can see Frei being frustrating in that he would ‘assist the assist’, Kaca more likely to provide attacking returns but will get a fair few 1 point cameos.

Not a Fulham fan, but this looks exactly like what Im thinking.. Hughes could (later on) be replaced by Senderos, therefor I rate Hangeland higher and well worth the extra .5, possibly goals (or not) would just be a bonus.
Kacaniklic imo, should start instead of Frei on the left, Rodallega will be competing aswell... I really think Kacaniklic will get to start the 2-3 first gws, and if he does well (and Dempsey leaves) he could very well start more games..
