Spot the Differential – Gameweek 1

Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Personally I'd downgrade vidic and upgrade zab, and goalkeeper-wise i'm probably gonna go for federici/friedel partnership - fed for gw1 and then friedel for the next 4 weeks (spurs fixtures are amazing). With the extra cash you could upgrade guthrie to someone decent (maybe sinclair - swans fixtures are good and he's on pens, free kicks, corners etc)?

DDG and Vidic is a bit much. Might want to consider Chelsea defender or Verm instead of Vidic, or go with a cheaper keeper and free up cash to upgrade Ramirez or Guthrie.

not convinced on Arsenals start sorry mate, Gibbs is a no no, id rather have Hangeland/Hughes(apart from Man Utd game the fixtures early on are great!)

Also Podolski will be OoP playing Left Midfield, i dont like the thought of one of my strikers playing in midfield 🙁

ye mate but you've got 2 think VDV is lazy and always comes off roughly with 10 mins 2 go! Dont get me wrong i think he's class but knowing AVB, he likes work rate and if im being honest i can see lennon getting back into the side when he's fully fit and push VDV deeper of lestening his minutes further!

U know spurs r looking for another striker and IMO we've 2 many class Attacking Mids, its guna be like ManUtd's Mid, Your best bet is Bale he's world class and will keep his spot everyweek while he's fit and he's Consistent!

Not sure if Kaboul is nailed on & Moreover AVB's game plan is more about attacking football, So i wouldnt go anywhere near Tottenham's defence, way too leaky, You might wanna go for atleast one established MF, Kagawa & Hazard is too much of a punt IMO

Kaboul will play and im guna put it out ther that i think spurs will get 3/5 cleanies in the 1st 5 games. AVB likes 2 play a high line so Spurs are more suited 2 that because of their pacey back 4!

ye we'll see pal, i think the reason the highline didnt work for chelsea was their lack of pace in the centre of defence. Remember that game against QPR when they got 2 men sent off ok 1 was a 2 footed tackle by the drog but the other one was a ball over the top and i think JT bought SWP down!

Last attempt to respond to RMTs..To paraphrase Ewan Mcgregor

choose a keeper. Choose a high value defender. Choose a team strip. Choose a balanced midfield, choose a fcking big centre forward. Choose passers, tacklers, tricky little players and big brutal ones. Choose good rotation, low risk and mid value. Choose players whose value will rise. Choose starter players. Choose you wannabe friends. Choose them by instinct and matching stats. Choose a 3 piece strikeforce on a high budget in a range of fcking talents. Choose tinkering obsessively and wondering who the fck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind numbing, spirit crushing games, stuffing more junk into your team. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last 1m on in a miserable mood, nothing but disappointment for the fcked up brats you picked to replace your gw1 punts. Choose your future. Choose life.

    But don't choose Boselli

keepers fine, although we bench a 6.0 keeper? if ur gonna bench him, get someone cheaper.
defenders nice. i'd maybe start shawcross.
mids looking good. u could wait on kagawa and get him later. start with someone like siggy/bale.
      fowrds amazing, perfect.

      pls rmt above too. thx

Someone pointed out to me the other evening that the FPL price structure is - on the whole - pretty good and bargains are hard to find. That's bloody true (Tevez & Pog aside) so avoiding wastes of money becomes an important criteria in this game. I'll name and shame a few fantasy imposters. Have I missed any big 'uns??

    Hazard (nb)
    Van Persie
    Rooney
    Van Persie
    Cazorla (nap)
Silva (2 goal since bonfire night before you start bleeting

P.S. Van Persie is now such a waste of money I named him twice.

I don't agree on Cazorla precisely because RVP has left surely boosting his potential. I'd put him in the same boat as Podolski

Cazorla & Hazard impostors before they've kicked a ball? That Sir is nothing more than a guess, because you have nothing to base it on.
