With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2025/26, we’re welcoming back our team of guest writers for the new campaign.

After winning the inaugural FPL Challenge in the 2024/25 season, Zawad Amin shares his FPL ‘classic’ thoughts and team-building approach for the upcoming campaign.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

Pre-Season Strategy: Playing the Long Game

The 2025/26 season brings with it some significant changes, particularly in the chip structure.

However, I’m maintaining my long-standing philosophy of avoiding early chip usage. Instead, my focus remains on saving transfers early, ideally through Gameweeks 1 to 3, and making my first key moves in Gameweek 3 or 4, when we have enough data on player roles, minutes, and form.

To support this approach, I’ve built a squad that balances popular picks with a few calculated differentials. The idea is to minimise early damage from ownership swings while staying flexible enough to jump on early-season bandwagons with minimal hits.

Key Selection Principles

Penalty Takers & Talismans from Big Teams

Players on pens and with talismanic roles are usually immune to short-term dips. This year, I’ve prioritised players with set-piece duties in top teams, often a consistent source of FPL points.

Ownership-Based Stability

I lean toward highly owned assets early on to limit rank volatility. This helps absorb early bandwagons and reduce the risk of falling behind from a low-owned punt that didn’t land.

Players I’ve Picked (and Why I’m Not Fully Comfortable)

fpllenge_zawad I won the FPL Challenge 24/25 season and have consistently finished in the top 1% in FPL Classic since 2018/19 with my best finish being 1917th in the 23/24 season. Follow them on Twitter

Thats the BIG question, Do we start with Watkins and then move to the Big G if he is nailed on starter & firing?

What order would you put the following 5m mids?

    A. Xhaka

    C. Christie
    D. Baleba

    Cheers for any response.

      Hi All,

My first draft below. Grateful for any comments.

      Kelleher
      Kerkez, Milenkovic, Chalobah
      Wirtz, Palmer, Kudus, McNeil,
      Gyokeres, Watkins, Bowen,

Bench: Petrovic, Reijnders, Truffert, De Cuyper. and £2.50m ITB. Might go Cucu for Chalobah, but like having cash ITB to afford quality incomers.

Kudus to Xhaka. Allows Chalobah to Cucurella and Kelleher to Sels (set and forget) this Petrovic to 4m gk and more cash ITB

Thanks for the input. Definitely going Cucurella, but might stick with the keepers as they dovetail well when Brentford have a tricky fixture. Initially dismissed Xhaka option, but now actually think he's a good option. 7G+8A when last in prem with 8.5XGi, and Sunderland have decent early fixtures to GW9.

0.5, or even 1m itb to start is smart to cover early moves. 2.5 feels like putting yourself at a disadvantage (especially with an overloaded bench too, although I guess that gives you flexibility for an impromptu BB at least)

Think I will upgrade a player or two before week one, and have less ITB. I like to have a strong squad of 15, so I can navigate the fixtures without using transfers so much. Won my minileague last year so I might be on to something!

Just that the Salah/Haaland double up unbalances things, leaves the midfield weaker than I'd like.

Not a fan of four at the back when there are so many good midfield options (albeit 6.5m and above) but otherwise a nice line-up given the the 2x14m investment.

Depends on rotation, check which one has the better fixture the week you might need him. Another thing to keep in mind is Esteve has a much higher ownership, for now at least, meaning he is more prone to a price drop.

I’m looking at Bijol with possible DCs against Arsenal after no one owns him in GW1.

He was signed for €22m after impressing (and getting suspended) in Italy. Would be weird to see him left out of the squad completely especially if they play 5 at the back. One to watch.

Can you rank the below players in terms of necessity? I'm thinking of alternatives for all to create a more balanced team, but it's difficult to get past their upside.

      A) Salah
      B) Palmer
      C) Haaland

I'm thinking of their importance in that order, but with Wirtz, Ekitike, and possibly Isak coming in, that means not all of the action will be going through Salah this season - he will not need to be both chief creator and chief goalscorer like he was last season - and therefore may not be AS essential as he once was.

Also with Wirtz at 8.5, JP at 7.5 and Foden at 8, that's a big savings which can be spread out into the rest of my team, including being able to afford premium defenders.

      3. Captain Mal
        • 1 Year

It mostly depends on captaincy plans, that's the main reason you pay the premium price anyway.

      4. The Mentaculus
        • 4 Years

Trying to cover premiums with mid-priced alternatives from the same club never works. Just pick the one (or two) you consider the best bet(s) for captaincy to start with and go from there (i.e. rather than picking Haaland just because Wirtz is more nailed than Marmoush/Foden)

        Or, ACB

To McNeil or not to NcNeil...

He looks undervalued based on his - limited - record last season. And a nice price point/alternative to Ndiaye or Anderson (if trying to avoid a Forest triple-up). But Everton look shonky. Tempted, but is anyone else going there?

      1. Luis Suarez Ate My Homework

AKA the English Messi (or at least, that's what my mate calls him).

If you can afford the extra .5, go for Ndiaye - he's on penalties and will be their talisman this year.

Thanks. Yes, Ndiaye might be a better bet. The ppm for McNeil look great, but maybe better to take the 0.5m out of defence.

Everton offer great enablers and CBIT, but they're looking like an early season trap once more. Think I'd rather not have any and bring some in, rather than start with them and think, "it's like death and taxes... why did I bother when I know this happens annually"

Every season is different of course so I'm wary of being flippant

Newcastle need to get a handle on this before the situation becomes untenable - Isak is already training away from the group in Spain, and I'm not sure whether the club has actually sanctioned that or not.

To me, it makes sense for them to give him a Suarez deal (ask for one more season and promise to let him go next summer for a smaller fee) but I don't know how the player's feeling obviously. Whoever his agent is wants sacking because he's gone about this completely backwards.

If Liverpool sign Isak as well as the attacking line up they have, it's over for everyone. They'll run away with the league

They still need another centre-half and a left-winger but they're by far and away the most complete squad in the league - would also be the only squad in the league with 4 indisputably world class players.

dont agree, if anything it makes them less likely to win it again. The new players will need time to bed in and no guarantees that the new strike force will be better than the old one.

Defenders still get -1 for every 2 goals conceded. So yes, theoretically, but it would be net zero i.e. +2 DC, -2 for GC

If there's one thing to learn from this article, it's that every clown in the world can win FPL.
What a joke of a team.

Having a torrid preseason and I don't think any of their 4.0 defenders have played yet. Xhaka is a tidy signing but I still don't see them being anywhere near good enough not to finish in the bottom 2. Would rather have a Burnley defender if you have to start one in GW2, although not really much in it and only 1 goal in the previous 3 matches between the sides

I'm going with two 4m benchfodder, only to start when a premium is injured. Currently on Esteve and Reinildo but could be anyone. Way i see it, any time they have to fill in, they have a chance of DC points even if the side gets battered.

Yeah, for the three or four times over a season I might have to call on Rodon, I'm thinking I might as well punt on Gudmunsson on the tiny off chance he hers an attacking return.

I keep shuffling the .5s over here and over there

            Sanchez

            Neco - Colwill - Konsa

            Salah - Wirtz - Palmer - Saka

            Wood - Raul - JSL

            Darlow -- Rodon - Esteve - 4.5

Lacks Villa attack, CBIT and a 9 fwd

I understand the clamour for 3-5-2, but the bonus is so heavily weighted towards the 3 forward points/positions I think. I love the midfield and then the defence isn't the skeleton crew I've often had set in there. Just then focus on no.9 talismen up top to nick a goal here and there

Pretty solid team. I like the Neco pick. Double Chelsea defense might be a bit much. Colwill > Lacroix?

Arsenal looking very sharp in preseason. High press is causing a lot of problems.

Fulham. Andreas or Wilson for 5.5 mid?

start with Solanke straight away or punt on Wood first and move after 2/3 GWs?

I just stood at the backdoor and shouted "Piroe" as loud as I could. Scared away two pigeons and made the baby next door cry. So yes, quite a good shout.
