Our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2025/26 team previews continue with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Here, their best FPL picks for the upcoming campaign are discussed. We’ll also attempt to predict the line-up for Gameweek 1, review pre-season, detail the best players for defensive contributions (DC) and more.

What is Zophar still debating with one week to go?

The data and graphics in this article come from either our Members Area or Statsbomb, with whom we are again partnering in 2025/26.

Fantasy managers can get access to the wealth of Statsbomb numbers, as well as the usual Opta stats, new defensive contribution (DC) points, recalculated points from last season, exclusive articles, transfer planner, tools and app, with a 47% discounted Chief Scout membership today.

REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

FPL pre-season: Isak’s future + Arteta on Gyokeres' pens

THEY’VE BOUGHT A FORWARD

Last season’s 69 goals were very low for a supposed title contender, far less than the 88 and 91 of their second-placed finishes in 2022/23 and 2023/24.

Bournemouth had more overall attempts, while the Gunners ranked seventh for shots on target (180) – below both the Cherries and Brighton and Hove Albion. They only narrowly pipped Crystal Palace to sixth for expected goals (xG, 61.58) – yes, these 69 strikes were actually a big overachievement!

Arteta has long been chasing the purchase of a top-class striker, so the hope is that £64m man Viktor Gyokeres (£9.0m) can help turn all those draws into wins. Arsenal dropped 21 points from leading positions, enduring a February-to-May spell of three wins in 11.

Not that Kai Havertz (£7.5m) had been particularly bad, bagging nine goals in 21 pre-injury league starts.

STRONG DEFENCE

If Arsenal eventually better their three years of being runners-up, a big reason will be having the bedrock of a good defence.

No side conceded fewer goals (34), expected goals (xGC, 35.08), shots on target (120) or big chances (58), keeping 13 clean sheets along the way. David Raya (£5.5m) was the joint-winner of the Golden Glove.

Two seasons ago, they were also the best in these four areas, with even better numbers of – in order – 29, 28.42, 83 and 40.

Whether it’s from Gameweek 1 or once fixtures improve, FPL managers absolutely need coverage of this backline.

SET-PIECE THREAT

As is often discussed by pundits, Arsenal are good at dead-ball situations:

They ended 2024/25 as the fourth-best for set-piece shots (153) and second-best at preventing them (86). Alongside Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, the Gunners scored 17 times from such moments.

REASONS TO BE FEARFUL

FPL notes: Saliba ban, Arteta on Saka 1

ILL-DISCIPLINE

With Gyokeres one of many signings – more on them below – not much should concern supporters.

Even so, it’s worth mentioning that Arsenal collected a league-high of six red cards. That’s despite conceding the joint-fourth fewest fouls (401) and accumulating the third-least bookings (66).

If Arteta can calm everyone down, maybe those wins stop becoming draws and there will be more lineup stability.

FPL Marc Broadcaster, writer and overthinker. Hoping that ‘differential potential’ will catch on.

Starting with Gyokeres only because of the GW2 fixture vs. Leeds. If it fails I'm ready to get Sesko for GW3 vs. Burnley.

With the Rogers injury I’ve downgraded to Malen and now I have no clue where to put the 1.5.

    Sels (Dubravka)
    Konsa VDV DeCuyper Diouf (Esteve)
    Salah Palmer Wirtz Anderson Malen
    Haaland (Guiu, Kroupi)

I’ve been tempted by a couple different ideas:
    1) De Cuyper>Frimpong
    2) Kroupi>Fullkrug
    3) Upgrading two 4.5 defenders to a 5.5 and a 5.0 defender
    4) Wirtz>Saka in GW2
    5) Just hold onto it and use when necessary

5 - Reasonable to start with Anderson and Malen under the circumstances, but I think you will likely want to upgrade one of them within a few weeks.

This is what I’m leaning at the moment! Don’t think they’ll work long term but in the interim they’re fine options. The defense is cheap but has good fixtures to open. It just feels really bad not using the entire budget when I can

Currently, Piroe is my 5.5 attacker punt with bench fodder 4.5 mid. I’m also considering Guiu as fodder and converting the mid to Malen. If I do that, I would bank the 1.5 to bring in Rogers on his return/Malen expiration.

Hey Kun. Nice to see your interesting team at the start of a new season, as always. I think I would go with at least one upgrade in defence. Hard to decide whether to cover the 6.0 price or spread it, but I would probably lean towards spreading it -- 5.5/5.0 + 5.0/4.5

      1. Deulofail
        • 9 Years

Thinking about it, why not upgrade Esteve to a player you would be happy to play most or all weeks? It's nice to get the money saved out of a 4.0 defender, but with your structure, it would pay to have a better first sub. Maybe Fullkrug or Piroe would do, and would give you a deeper bench, but you can get more bang for your buck in defence, so I think that's where I would spend it.

          Good to see you Deu!

I like both of your ideas. Esteve to a 5.5 (likely Murillo) would allow for some decent rotations every week on defense, right now Esteve is very likely to just ride the bench apart from maybe GW2. The spreading across the defense also feels salient but I don’t know how much of an upgrade the 5.0s are on the 4.5s, which I assume is also your hesitancy on that one.

And like you, I agree I’m not sure Fullkrug and Piroe are a big enough jump in quality to merit the spend either

          1. Deulofail
            • 9 Years

I was saying that with Piroe in my team as well!

But thinking about your team has led me to selling him off for a 4.5 to upgrade defence. Now my team is similar to yours.

            Sanchez 4.0
            VVD Porro Williams Lacroix Truffert
            Salah Palmer Ndiaye Anderson Baleba
            Haaland Guiu 4.5

I like these two 5.0 defenders, though their 5.5 counterparts are worth the upgrade if you can afford them.

Next, need to decide if 1-up-top is worth it in the mid- to long-term, since it'll make it harder to jump on a forward with money locked up in defence. Might be back on Piroe in a couple days or starting the draft from scratch.

            Good luck this season!

That’s an incredible defense. Anderson and Baleba should tick over nicely. Looks like a very decent team.

Again if the difference between having a 5.0 or VVD is whether you want Piroe or not, I’m inclined to lean VVD. Very solid draft. I can’t look past Salah+Palmer+Haaland, and Wirtz is sort of in that conversation for me as well

                4 months, 20 days ago

Tempting also to downgrade VVD to Murillo, even if that means tripling on Forest. Can bench them all against Arsenal. Just wouldn't know what to do with the 0.5. Covering the 6.0 price could be useful though. Maybe leave it in my bank for that reason.

I can see the appeal of Wirtz for sure. Currently taking a wait-and-see approach on him until the fixtures turn, mostly because of the benefit to the defence as you can see. 😀 But you could certainly tear up the game with all 4 of those players. Thankfully I would only be 1x Wirtz behind you

(I'm silly. I could bench 1 against Arsenal. 2 if Guiu is an option away at Palace that week. Might lean away from the triple-up then)

United need their attack to gel quickly, because according to the bookies they're in the bottom 3 for projected clean sheets in the first 6 gameweeks.

In fact, the Burnley game in GW3 makes their odds inflated.

Here's my second draft. I quite like this direction, but not committed to it.

    Sanchez 4.0
    Porro Williams Lacroix Truffert Rodon
    Salah Palmer Enzo Rice Baleba
    Haaland Piroe 4.5*

It's gone for "explosive" forwards, to try and capitalise on the extra goals scored in the opening weeks of the season (that's my assumption anyway). Starting with Salah and Haaland last season worked well, when many had just one. Adding Palmer to that could help me get that safe start again, using the money invested in premiums to downgrade later, once better value picks become more obvious. I've gone for Piroe for now as a cheap, less explosive explosive option, coz you gotta save money somewhere.

On the flip side, I've picked three midfielders who should be relatively fixture-proof (thanks to DCs) and safe for starts & minutes, so I can save up the transfers if I want. They have some potential for attacking returns too.

In defence, I think the 4.0-5.0 bracket is being a bit overlooked, so there could be price rises to be found here when people are scrimping together funds for upgrades elsewhere. I wish I didn't have Porro, but he seems like a good option, I suppose, with those fixtures. They all rotate well-enough when necessary.

I am considering downgrading Porro to upgrade Rice (or Piroe if he's looks too risky), which was my initial instinct, but I'm not currently keen on the alternatives in attack, though I'd like to have an 8.5 mid to switch to Wirtz if he's looking hot. Always try and see if I can get 3x 4.0 to rotate for one slot in defence, or something like that, and I'm not writing it off yet.

*Not Guiu, as I don't want to be forced into an early transfer or lose 0.1 if he's sold en masse

I like the 3 DC options with attacking potentials to complement Haaland, however, the defence looks weak & only 1 fwd option isn’t good especially if players get scathed.

Just done this for now. Piroe + Enzo + Rice + Rodon > 4.5 + Ndiaye + Anderson + VVD

The XI looks a little better, but squad a little weaker, maybe too weak. So I've gone for Guiu, who I didn't want, but need his potential mins for squad depth

Not him, either. I think the Isak transfer is going to happen which would change the dynamics at Liverpool somewhat.

My theory is Isak would be the first CF that Salah's played with at Liverpool worth their salt. I doubt Isak would sign if he was going to play second fiddle to Salah. Moreover, Salah is 33 and Liverpool are an institution much bigger than one man. They've got to start thinking about life without him at some point and I think their aggression in the market this season is a sign of that.

Salah will still score points, absolutely, but I think they'll occur in a different manner. No offence to Nunez, but Isak can do the job of a proper number 9 and Wirtz has already started finding central positions.

Of course, this theory is null-and-void if Isak doesn't sign.

I might be with you on this, although I'm not totally sure about Saka either. But he is at least a convenient place to park Isak funds for a couple weeks, and I feel like Gudmundsson is probably going to struggle against him, especially if not getting much help from Gnonto, so GW2 (C) could be on

Not sure i can make the money work since i've got 3 bigs in there. Even to turn a 6.5 kudus into a 7 neto means basically no bench. 7.5 might be a bridge too far, unless i think about shipping isak or haaland.

Isak won't have a pre-season, I'd pass on him tbh.

Saka and Palmer priced the same as last season with unfinished business and undisputed the best premium mid options outside of Salah (last year I was a bit distracted in Foden/Son)

Bit tough to fit them and Watkins in though doable

No. Everton signed Barry from Villarreal this summer. Beto will start the season, but they'll be benchings/rotation.

Barry pricing at 6m suggests he's not an auto starter and competing with Beto. If Beto maintains form from end of last season might be more secure...

Barry looked pretty good after coming on in the last friendly. Has a lot more pace than Beto.

Anyone have a good idea of how the Man united back line will look gw1? Seeing Dorgu higlighted as an option but is he even likely to start and if so who misses out? Ideally want a 4.5def. Dalot Yoro? I have no idea who starts for them this season. Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

Likely to be Dorgu - Shaw - De Ligt - Yoro - Amad

I'd like to see Heaven start over Shaw, but I think Amorim will want to rely on experience in such a big game.

His season ended in February, so he's still working his way back to fitness. Mazraoui is currently injured.

Best bet I would say is Dorgu - he's looked really sharp in the gametime he's gotten and he's miles better than Dalot there. Seen some suggest that Dalot starts over him to try and neutralise Saka, but I think that would be a mistake.

Would imagine Dorgu starts as he has no competition. Seems unlikely that they would play Shaw left wing back. They signed a young player called Leon but would seem unlikely he would go into the starting 11

If I need a 5m midfielder to rotate with Guiu, A Ramsey and 2 x 4m defenders (IE 1 x starting spot), would you go:

    A) Dewsbury-Hall

    OR

    B) Baleba

Do you guys think Haaland will be a monster for goals this season? I appreciate when committing to a non-Haaland draft we want to convince ourselves he won’t damage our ranks however objectively speaking do you fear he could go nuclear?

Haaland will score loads of goals all season long. He is currently only 20% owned though, so not owning him wouldn't be the end of the World. Not owning Salah at that ownership could be catastrophic.

Question is really, are you brave enough to go against the Salah ownership and captain Haaland each week.

Wouldn't mind an aggressive start, but not convinced on my Captaincy options in BB team.

Option A) Current team (no BB)

    Kelleher (Dubravka)
    RAN Williams Diouf (Dorgu Gudmundsson)
    Palmer(V) Wirtz Gakpo Reijnders (Sarr)
    Haaland(C) Watkins Pedro

Option B) BB team WC GW2/3

    Sels Bizot
    RAN Frimpong Cucurella Porro Williams
    Palmer(C) Wirtz Gakpo(V) Tielemans Sarr
    Watkins Bowen Pedro
