We’re hearing from all our guest writers ahead of the big Gameweek 1 kick-off.

Here, three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser discusses four things – both on and off the field – that could still alter our Gameweek 1 teams.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

Lateriser triple Forest

There’s not much time left to make many decisions and yet I’ve still to resolve so many of them.

Largely, I feel fairly settled with the information my brain has processed and have a shortlist in my head of permutations and combinations. However, I think most of us FPL managers will only finalise those decisions based on what we see over the weekend.

We keep telling ourselves that pre-season doesn’t matter and it’s only a fitness exercise but I think the closer the friendlies get to Gameweek 1, the more relevant the information. And that is why I think we can gain a fair amount of knowledge from the action at the weekend – and what happens off the field over the next week.

1. HOW WILL MAN CITY LOOK?

FPL notes: KDB outdoes Marmoush + why Pep didn't use Haaland 2

So far, we don’t have an idea of how Manchester City will look.

While the shape of Chelsea is relatively more predictable (if we use the end of the Club World Club) as a base, that of Manchester City still has some question marks.

I think all of us are conveniently ignoring a certain Erling Haaland (£14.0m) using the ‘captaincy’ reason but I think we might regret it if we don’t go there. I am certainly giving myself the same reason but I just know that he’s going to start the season on fire. Man City are much better equipped to handle this campaign with their recruitment and return to fitness (and relevance) of a couple of their key players.

I am certainly targeting that fixture in Gameweek 6 as a key point to invest in their team (if my head hasn’t turned this weekend).

2. DUBRAVKA + GUIU: HOW MANY MINUTES WILL THEY GET?

FPL new signings: £4.0m goalkeeper Dubravka 2

There is so much information out there to gain which will determine the shape of our squad.

If, like me, you’re looking at a Bench Boost in the first three Gameweeks, the fitness of Martin Dubravka (£4.0m) and how Sunderland plan to use Marc Guiu (£4.5m) is very important.

How Burnley and the Black Cats use these two budget gems over the weekend will be interesting. Keep an ear out for next week’s press conferences, too.

There’s also a question mark over the fitness of Morgan Rogers (£7.0m), of course.

3. STRIKER MERRY-GO-ROUND

FPL Gameweek 9 differentials: Wissa, Cunha + Anderson 4

And not just that, a big striker-sized domino effect is still pending in the league.

The futures of Alexander Isak (£10.5m), Yoane Wissa (£7.5m) and Nicolas Jackson (£6.5m) are still to be determined, all of whom will become very relevant in the FPL domain.

A £7.5m or £6.5m forward leading the line for Newcastle would be an interesting proposition.

I am really hoping that Ollie Watkins (£9.0m) does not become a part of that merry-go-round for strikers, as I would very much like him to be the main man at Aston Villa.

4. PALACE’S EUROPEAN FATE

FPL notes: Eze’s scoring run, Munoz threat + Kulusevski injury

Speaking of information to be gained, I am very intrigued by Crystal Palace because I believe they have had a very good pre-season with a settled team playing together regularly.

But what happens with their appeal on Monday will determine how I view their team. If they have to play a European qualifier between Gameweeks 1-2 and 2-3, that will slightly put me off their assets and vice versa.

In addition, while the news of Eberechi Eze (£7.5m) leaving Crystal Palace has calmed down at the moment, I am still worried about one of the north London clubs making a big move. This might have an Olise-sized effect on the start of the season for Palace, who were slow off the mark last year. I don’t expect that to be the case this year if they keep hold of Eze, which makes the in-form Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m), Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m), Daniel Munoz (£5.5m) Maxence Lacroix (£5.0m), Chris Richards (£4.5m) and Eze himself all very interesting options from an FPL point of view.

This affects the attackers more, in my opinion, as I think Eze directly affects the points potential of Mateta, Sarr and Munoz (who I see as an attacker!).

PLAYING MY OWN GAME

Away from the above considerations, it is an exciting time in FPL. So much to learn and the heart is full of hope and optimism.

I’ve not had the best three years but while I admit I didn’t really play good FPL for a season or two, last year I thought I played fairly well and just didn’t have the rub of the green. I’m aware that my playstyle means a relatively wider bell curve in the possibilities of rank in the season, where I am as capable of having a top 5k finish as I am of having a top 500k finish.

But I realised in the two years of not playing FPL well that, to truly enjoy the game, I have to back my gut and hope that the hours of time put into reading, watching football and now looking at analytical data (you learn or get left behind) is going to lead to a subconscious that is more powered than the average FPL manager.

I’m hoping to pay more attention to minutes, work on accumulating more free transfers so I can make them in tranches of 3-4 instead of 1-2, not ignore penalties and largely start going rogue only when we start going deeper into the season. All of the above, while reflecting a little more and spending some time with my own mind.

With the abundance of content out there, it is easy to keep consuming more while ultimately thinking less about your team. It’s a mistake I’ve tended to make over the last few seasons. Hopefully, I’ll correct that and process my thoughts a lot more than listening to others’ processed thoughts.

And most importantly, here’s hoping that lady luck is on my side this campaign. Fingers crossed. On that note, good luck everyone!

Should be some good insights from Neale after this!

I am a bit disappointed in City’s fixture. Palermo came 8th in Serie B last season, not quite the test that most other premier league teams are giving themselves, and of all the teams on this list it’s City we probably know the least about

That's probably because City is more focused on building fitness, as the Club World Cup could count as their more tactical preseason games

The strangest part is when people do bad at the game and start talking about how their feelings are hurt or they’re struggling

I’m addicted to this game but it’s not that deep. It’s not life and death

        Mental health is highly individualised

If it's not deep for you, it could easily be deep for another person. And you don't get to choose that for them. They might not even get to choose that for themselves

I’m sorry to write this but I have to, replying to me with a link about mental health when I have a very close family member that has schizophrenia pretty much sums up my point. I don’t understand this part of the community, it shows a lack of life experience. I’m not trying to point score

Mental health problems and your feelings about doing bad at FPL are not the same thing

            I agree

I think it's more ego than mental health

Feeling down because your fantasy players didn't score is next level

Alright then, I'll explain further as a medical doctor

"It's not that deep" is one of the worst things to say to someone who has already pointed something out as an issue or a trigger for their current mental state

Consider anger as an example. If you're already angry, then something that *you* would consider a small issue on a regular day will suddenly piss you off even further

That's where this idea is coming from. Everybody has very individual circumstances that lead to certain things being triggers or signs for them, no matter how trivial they might feel to everybody else

The strongest source of info on what's gotten someone feeling so low is the person themselves, not our own standards. Where doctors then come in is if there is enough of a need to treat beyond behavioural changes and support from loved ones

No, but it's the field I was interested in before I left the medical career. And of course, lots of personal experience with loved ones and self, so I still look into it often

I wouldn’t say it to someone’s who’s already struggling. But FPL is a free game, there’s no money involved. If someone is triggered by FPL, they should stop playing. I rage quit a season like 7/8 years ago and after that have improved so much at the game. People have to learn to accept the highs and lows of it. If a person was telling you that they’re triggered by playing FIFA or Call of Duty and losing on it, would you feel sorry for them or think maybe they shouldn’t link mental health problems with their feelings about how their game is going and that’s what I’m trying to say, it’s a game. It’s not right to link FPL with mental health issues and other serious issues in life. I don’t believe that’s putting someone down or dismissing how they feel in life

Imagine one suffers from genuine mental health problems and then sees a person mentioning such issues because their captain blanked or they’re having a bad season. Without putting people down, at some point it becomes a bit ridiculous but that’s just my view mate 🙂

Mental health struggles are not often rational. Telling someone who is struggling with something that their issue is not important and they should just stop is never going to be helpful.

Passion for a hobby creates highs and lows and it is ok for people to talk about their feelings. Normalise talking about feelings. Particularly in male dominated spaces.

There's an argument for including nearly every Palace player:

      Henderson

Munoz (most nailed and attacking defender)

      Lacroix (DC)
      Richards (DC)
      Guehi

      Wharton (DC)

      Sarr
      Eze
      Mateta

Arias at Fluminense .... 47 goals and 55 assists in 230 games. Not bad.

Think I'm going to start the season with him. Not sure whether to bench him for a West Ham £4.5m defender in gameweek 1 though.

The Eze release clause may or may not have expired - depending on whether it is calculated from season start or end of window - trying to be moderately helpful as is my wont. But would take Mateta as the prime Palace attacking asset somewhere down the line. Weeks 30-38 seem traditional.

A then - with half a thought that Wharton might well equal Anderson this time around for a vital saving. Lad barely played last season and is in the category of players where 24/5 is not a barometer for 25/6.

Newcastle United have put an end to the possibility of Alexander Isak's transfer to Liverpool.

They have informed him he WON'T BE SOLD this summer.

I guess if Liverpool aren't going to offer much more than £110m then Newcastle had to exert some control.

Why didn't his agent get him to go AWOL at the start of the summer, before Liverpool and Arsenal had spent money. I guess they thought that behind the scenes manoeuvres would work.

I'd definitely play him against Liverpool if I was Howe.

unless players have bulletproof release clauses built into the contracts, I really don't see why/how some can actually throw their toys out of the pram whilst still under contract. I'm sure it was all smiles when they 1st signed that contract.

We don't know the real ins and outs on this, despite journos and supposed ITKs trying to connect the dots. I don't blame him for wanting to leave. I would have liked him to stay another season, given we qualified for the CL. The fact is he's developed faster than the team and club around him. Maybe cashing in on him this summer would be the best for everyone involved.

          1. x.jim.x
            • 11 Years

I don't think anyone would have blamed him for bowing out gracefully after the cup win. If his team had let the club know early doors, and followed it up with a nice statement at the end of the season, I don't think anyone would have had a bad word to say about him really.

Waiting until now when anyone who actually could afford the fee have already bought strikers is just madness - he needs to sack his agent cos he'd be in a Liverpool shirt already if they'd actually thought things through. Can't see him anyone else coming in for him now, unless a foreign club shocks us all.

I think the most likely situation is he comes back with his tail between his legs, scores a couple in his first appearance, and all is forgiven.

Who is the best 4.5m to fit alongside a Gvardiol and Milenkovic? Likely starting every GW, With 2 4ms ? I'm currently on VDV.
      This should give me
Gvardiol, VDV, Milenkovic for around 8 GWs. Esteve playing GW2 when Spurs have City.

Not sure theres a standout to be honest. Andersen looks good for defcon potential and they underperformed defensively last season, might revert to the mean who knows. Richards is actually much better than Guehi on defcon but less goal threat, both ok options. Wan-B probably solely an attacking threat pick as might be De Cuyper, not sure either defence is amazing and full backs likely to struggle on defcon. Theres loads you could throw in. One I'm not keen on but seems to be popular is Konsa as Villa generally do nothing on defcon, not sure if thats an Emery passive defending tactic. Hes a worse version of Guehi

I'm looking mainly for 1 4.5m to rotate with Esteve and Reinildo or Rondon over the first 8 or so GWs. Transfers can obviously swap them around as well.
VDV gives me Burnley, Esteve, Sunderland, and either ReinildoBrentford/ VDV,Bournemouth (H) first 3 games.

That's what I initially had, Think Milenkovic will score a fair few more than Williams. With the 6m and 5m. I just need 1 4.5m to rotate with Esteve and either Reinildo or Rondon

      Hi folks

Currently I have both VVD and RAN in defence. The Rogers situation has me reviewing my squad. I’ve no Salah and saw Wirtz against Athletic and think I need him. Would need 1.5 by downgrading one of the 6m defenders.

What’s are your thoughts on the below options?

      A) Keep RAN and Rogers(if fit)
      B) downgrade RAN to 4.5def, upgrade Rogers to Wirtz
      C) downgrade RAN to 4m def, uograde Kudus to Wirtz (keep Rogers if fit)

      Team below:

      Sels
      VVD, RAN, Porro, Williams
      Palmer, Fernandes, Rogers, Kudus
      Haaland, Wood

      Dubravka, Guiu, Le Fee/Carvalho, Dorgu
