Most Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads will contain at least one budget enabler.

Here we look through the cheapest starting players in FPL Gameweek 1, as well as those making an appearance off the bench.

We’ll be going through all four Fantasy positions: goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards.

GOALKEEPERS

Following his summer move to Burnley, Martin Dubravka (£4.0m) was a popular choice for FPL managers as a reserve goalkeeper. Indeed, with a 34.6% ownership, the Slovak is the most popular keeper in the game.

In Gameweek 1, Dubravka played the full 90 minutes for the Clarets against Tottenham Hotspur but did little wrong in the 3-0 reverse. He saved 50% of the six shots he faced and half of the two big chances with which he was confronted.

DEFENDERS

Echoing the thoughts here. Think Petrovic and the Sunderland GK could be the ones but early days and little data to go off.

Roefs in the Sunderland line up reminds me of the Raya style of Brentford. Very tempted to go there over Petrovic on WC

I was going to FH this week to stack on Arsenal, but really not convinced... Though would be typical of them to take advantage of the marauding Leeds!

    Sels
    RAN, Frimpong, Diouf
Salah (c), Palmer, Rice, Kudus, Reijnders
    Watkins, J. Pedro

    Dubravka, Fullkrug, VDV, Gudmundsson

    Thinking Diouf > Cash?
    Alternatively FH
Alternatively WC (was going to do in GW4) - only went J.Pedro to cover off due to ownership, was half tempted by him. Think I'm happy to lose Palmer to get Haaland

I think it’s still too early for any of those changes. Chelsea conceded a few chances against Palace and I don’t think they’ll be bulletproof against WH.

      1. Zenith UK

Hence why I'm just thinking Diouf > Cash? I have four players in the WHU v CHE game and as an FPL manager I need/want Palmer/J.Pedro to score (which means Diouf needs an attacking return to make it worthwhile), as a WHU fan I need us to win...

    RMWCT

    Sels
    Gabriel - Chalobah - Dorgu
    Palmer - Mbeumo - Semenyo - Reijnders
    Haaland - Gyokeres - Watkins

    Dubravka - King - Gudmundsson - Reinildo

BB done in GW 1. WC now to get rid of the heavy bench.

    Salah plan -

    GW 3 - Gyokeres ➡ Wood
    GW 4 - FH
    GW 5 - Palmer + Mbeumo ➡ Salah + Anderson/Arias

Planning a few transfers to have Salah back in GW 5 for captaincy.

    Thoughts? 🙂

I don't think it's a good plan at all. If U haven't played the WC yet don't do it.

U want more info before making long term picks on WC. I bet come week 4 Ur laid out plans will have changed cuz somebody else will be the flavour of the week in these next two game weeks

Besides with the Defcons available Ur defenders don't need the best fixtures to get some points for the next two and mids and forward points are extremely hard to predict first few weeks

this - and a few rolled transfers can get rid of a heavy bench and move more into your 11

Also this plan seems very short sighted. If you're planning to sell gyokeres why get him for just one game? His ceiling is already limited with minutes..but then if u keep him Ur chain of transfers is already compromised. It's a lose lose situation

One punt on WC is allowed. Have always played that way. Got a 3 digit rank as a result. May as well start with Wood. But that’s not my style.

I set up my team with WC GW 2 in mind

Have triple spurs defense vs City and triple Forest defense away to palace and Diouf vs Chelsea.

Ndiaye, Fullkrug, Rutter don’t seem of much use long term. That’s 10 players not worth holding. Got a decent 72 points BB and I need to maximise.

Planned only a couple of transfers. Have a really good feeling about Arsenal and Gyokeres this weekend.

Rest are all long term picks.

For starters BB 1 was clearly an error here then if U were planning to WC straight after... Can easily drag a BB team to 3 weeks with 3 week picks then WC but that's done...

Secondly, Ur making the same mistake with gyokeres that U did with some week 1
picks, just looking at one week. Unless you're planning to captain him and he goes big, he's not going to realistically return enough to warrant a use of transfer

Not an error if it has gotten me 17 more points than my non BB team would have.

Dragging a BB team would mean not having the ideal players for BB. Also, dragging would mean far from ideal GW 2 and 3 teams.

Now that it’s out of the way, I can have a very cheap bench and all the money spent on the eleven without having to think of a gw to BB.

Your non BB team would also have a WC in hand after next week though. Let's see how u get on but I'd still strongly recommend not using a WC now. I reckon you almost certainly won't be happy with Ur team in 2 weeks but happy to be proven wrong. Only time will tell

I always take one punt on WC and it’s Gyokeres this year. Have always played that way over 12 years resulting in multiple top 10k finishes with the best bench by 675.

Flawed strategy would have meant far less success doing it over the years.

One week punts are fine with the right context. WCing in week 2 then making a questionable one week punt can be a pickle. If he does well then you're in another situation with Ur Salah plan

The ranks thing isnt relevant here I have multiple top10k finishes too but don't like this WC plan at all.

If he does well and bangs a hatty, I will still get rid next week for the larger plan.

The rank thing is relevant here because you mentioned BB to be an error and striker from top 4 club at home to a promoted side a mistake.

Making those errors and mistakes wouldn’t have got me those ranks in the past. Hence the reference.

                Anyways, cheers for the inputs.

Your WC should try and accumulate players who will accumulate xG / Be potential tailsman / tick along and form the template

The following players are not this and i would be shocked if any of them (bar a Palmer position change can be the future template):
Chalobah - no attacking threat, no DC threat, no BP threat chelsea defence still maybe suspect, Cucurella way better option for Chelsea, at 5.0 million Lacroix is a much higher potential future template pick due to his ability to get DC and BP in a very good defence.

Dorgu - his underlying xGI has always been poor, United dont have a goalie, stay away for now.

Palmer - for sure a former template tailsman, however his output for 6 months and position has been poor - read around on chelsea fans showing how ineffective his numbers are when he plays in his current AM instead of RAM role.

Gyokeres- this is a huge punt on your part that he can be the xG / Tailsman for Arsenal directly from portugal when they have had Saka being that guy for years. I dont see it happening, he may tick along but i see a huge number of mid price forwards in other clubs who will get xG outscoring him. I can see strand larson for example easily match him. Id want Saka this week and beyond.

Mbeumo, hard to decide yet if its him bruno or Cunha, Id rather back the brazilan international to be the one , but could happen mbeumo steps up, most likely if United click both will be value

I also wouldnt make a Salah plan, its as likely you wont want / need him, and instead go for two of Witz, gakpo, Eki, Isak by then. And perman captain Haaland.

Loved what I saw of Mbeumo and Dorgu. United looked so good.

Great long term fixtures for Dorgu as well. Hit the post. Only 4.5.

        Mbeumo will fund Salah anyways.

Gyokeres is a punt I’m willing to take.

        Palmer again will find Salah.

Rest of them are very solid long term fixtures based picks.

Mbuemo data last year also was crazy good due to having 9 penalties , take those away and its not great.

Always play this years game is my advice every year going back to the mid 2000s and not last years - so Salah could be viable but I would be open in this new system to not have him.

Mbeumo had 11 non pen goals which is huge from a team like Brentford. Not to forget the 9 assists.

Considering the fact that he’s playing with Bruno, Cunha and Sesko now, I’m pretty sure that I’m playing this year’s game.

Weird to say “always been poor” about Dorgu when he played very limited minutes in a binfire of a team. He’s been great going forward in preseason, and again on Sunday, where he was also part of a good defence.

The eye test shows he looks lively, but its not based on anything.

His data shows he averages an assist less than 1 in 20 and a goal less than 1 in 10, coupled to the suspect United defence. Its not viable

His fixtures arent great either, at best 2 clean sheets (Bur and Sun) in the next 7 weeks coupled to no attacking threat.

sorry, didnt meant to ignore it. I meant he is one of those players who looks good, has a good burst of pace but is very poor ( he is in the bottom 5% of all left backs) at creating chances or providing assists. All his history shows this. I found him a very strange signing for United, given the money

United dont have a goalie and they need a midfield, Bruno who is great will go forward leaving huge gaps in the middle which teams will exploit

You really think they can keep cleansheets against Fulham , City , Chelsea, Liverpool, in the coming weeks?

                Again missed the point.

He barely HAS a history at the club, never mind enough to pull stats from. He started 10 league games in a team in the middle of a transition, which couldn’t score goals.

I’ve watched every minute of him (there aren’t many) in a United shirt, and he’s been a completely different player since the break.

yes, agreed there is potential to improve, but his stats are career based not just United. He has historically not been a lb who can provide attacking returns. He may become this , but there is nothing yet to indicate this.

Dorgu only plays 3 of the top 4 till GW 21.

That’s great looking fixtures long term for me.

Also, doesn’t really matter what he did in the past. Players improve with age, experience and coaching. Many in the PL have in the past.

                So?

I’m setting my team for the long haul. Can’t be short sighted with fixtures.

Also, GW 4 when he plays City, I’ll be on FH and will play Gudmundsson (bur,WOL) when he plays Chelsea and Liverpool.

                I have thought this through.

Just that the three you mentioned are a much worse defense than United and has no 4.5m attacking wingback.

                    Different teams.

Bournemouth have lost Zaba, Kerkez, Huijsen and Kepa

Palace are going to lose Guehi

Whereas United have strengthened and solidified under a good manager like Amorim.

The play in this game is to predict what’s gonna to happen in the future rather than what happened in the past with different set of players.

They haven't strengthened defensively or in DM. You could run a bus through their midfield last year and that hasn't changed. It's getting worse if anything!

I suppose Bournemouth have lost some defenders.

How much xG does Ekitike have from GW1?

Over 1.1 in 70mins. Not counting the two headers VVD took off him which would have probably added another 0.6

Salah is non negotiable for me as well. May add Ekitike or Wirtz later but not going without him from GW 4 onwards.

Pretty convinced that Cunha would be the ball progresses and creator with more chances falling to Mbeumo.

Cant see anyone but Bruno being the creator in that team. But could be wrong.

Good team. I’d probably upgrade Sels to Raya downgrade Chalobah to 4.5

If you’re on WC, would you drop Salah for Saka for next two GWs? And bring him back in GW4?

    Saka (C) in GW2
    Haaland (C) in GW3

Or just keep Salah who can probably match Saka?

15 years of playing FPL, God knows sitting tight on transfers for the first few (minimum 2) GWs is the only way forward. Hands up if you have had your botty reddened by recency bias too often to know better! o/
