Tom Hadley – a one-time world number one in FPL â€“ is the newest addition to our ever-growing team of contributors.

He’ll be providing data-driven articles regularly this season, continuing with this one on defensive contribution points (DefCon).

It’s that time of the week where we go through another defensive contributions (DefCon) update and how we can look to maximise those extra points over the coming weeks.

It’s my job to analyse any trends that are forming from the DefCon assets and the teams they face. This week, I’ve tried to combine both elements to fully understand the whole picture.

Top DefCon performers

Firstly, let’s look through the standout performers after Gameweek 7:

top DefCon

We’re at a point in the season where the data is slowly starting to take shape. I very much expect these names to stay at the top of this leaderboard.

Senesi remains the yardstick despite Gameweek 7 blank

FPL notes: Strand-Larsen injury update + 1

Marcos Senesi (£5.0m) maintains his lead at the top of his charts despite failing to hit the threshold for the first time this season in Gameweek 7.

It’s no cause for concern in the slightest, however. Players won’t bank DefCon points every single week and, in fact, we’ve been lucky to see such inflated numbers so far this season (I’ll come back to that later).

For me, the fact that he hit seven contributions in less than 80 minutes against a Fulham side that hasn’t been amazing DefCon opponents and were playing without a recognised striker – it’s very positive reading.

Regarding Senesi in particular, he still resembles some of the best value in the game – even now at £5.0m. He is an all-action defender and will continue to get DefCon as regularly as anyone. He also has excellent attacking potential, as we saw in his last full season with four goals and five assists.

It’s simple for me: don’t bench Senesi in any game, with the possible exception of Manchester City away. Bournemouth are a solid team capable of clean sheets and, therefore, there’s always a chance of a big haul, just like we saw away at Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 3. His upcoming fixtures aren’t amazing but I still see a high floor for him and it’s always worth playing him with that frequent 3-4 point safety blanket, knowing that you’re covering a possible big haul.

Value at Palace

Best Konsa replacements for FPL Gameweek 2 onwards 1

I’ve said it a few times but the Crystal Palace defenders are simply exceptional value. They lost to Everton two weeks ago but their overall defensive data is superb. I doubt they will concede more than one goal in many games.

They also have the best total DefCon accumulation across their whole team in the league. The defensive, low-possession approach they take should only continue to generate excellent DefCon numbers.

Gameweek 8-13 fixtures: Ranked by DefCon potential

Now, the right-hand side of the leaderboard above incorporates opponent stats and the DefCon points achieved against them.

So, I have used the full opponent DefCon study across each team and combined it with a fixture difficulty ranking for the upcoming matches:

Probably Diouf because you want to enjoy playing the game. The answer might be Defcon Kilman.

Andersen will be great once Fulham tighten up and have the fixtures for it.

I'm heavily considered him, between him and Saka as Bruno replacement. Thing is, Saka has pens (unless he gifts them to Jokeres) and better xMins

Morning all. 1FT, 6.0 ITB. How to spend the Salah cash?

    Dub (4.0)
    Gab – Senesi – Lacroix - VVD - Gudmundsson
    Eze – Grealish – Reijnders – Semenyo - King
    Haaland – Pedro – Gyokeres

I'll be doing 4.0 GK to Pope in gw 10, but that still leaves 4.9m itb.

Get Saka in, with Eze or Gyo making way? Gakpo or Gordon in for Grealish? Could get palmer in if he's fit?

    Any thoughts?

Clearly haven’t seen much Arsenal this season.
Gyokeres is basically Darwin Nunez 2.0 but bit older.

Joao Pedro suffers without Palmer in the team.

I agree about the Palmer/Pedro point but that is harsh on gyokeres I think. Not being being on pens is a big blow to owners

That fine pal - football it’s about opinions.
I’m willing to bet £10 that Gyokeres willl join a long list of players who came with high expectations\price tag and completely flopped.

Unless Arteta can teach a grown up man to find his footing quicker and not fall over in the process.

I think there is no way gyokeres is a complete flop. I'd be amazed if a guy who scored 100 goals in 2 years is a flop here. I'm not a gooner so not been watching his every move but he was class at sporting, ok it's an easier league but he's still quality. Odegard being out hurts him as they were linking up really nicely.

Is LiveFPL meant to be the best price change predictor now? As I've been keeping my eye on it this last week and had 2 players drop in value that didn't look anywhere near according to their predictions. And the same players are at the top and bottom but haven't changed? Very hard to keep track of unless I am just being thick

      Genius this stuff
I wonder if you could somehow combine the defcon xPoints with the cs difficulty to find out an overall defensive consitution which shows how good it is to defend each opponent based on both, weighting the cs at maybe twice defcon but bringing both in
This could be huge for FPL

4.5mil rank... Worth captaining Salah as a last chance in my team?

      Captain:

      A. Salah
      B. Haaland

Salah traditionally does well against United at home so in isolation its a good captain pick. However backing against Haaland being in form and at home feels super risky.

Don't worry too much about rank at this point and gambling, pick who you think scores the most points.

        1. Cold Palms
          • 1 Year

How do you pick any captain options as traditionally? I certainly won't consider a traditional pick for Salah he looks useless right now and his armband selection is too bigger a gamble, for me it's all about form and fixtures all day long to make any captain decision

well in his last 4 home games vs united he's scored 5 goals and got 5 assists. So the point is he has historically done very well against them.

The point is United at home for Liverpool is not a bad fixture, and his record vs them is impressive so if you are feeling like going down that route then there are reasons for it. However, of course this season he is performing differently so the decision comes down to what an individual views as more important.

For me, and sounds like for you aswell, I think that Haaland is just a better pick this week and that it's not worth the gamble.

I’m 100K and might opt for Salah (C).
        Fancy him against United.
        Haaland is the obvious choice

        1. Cold Palms
          • 1 Year
          1 month, 20 days ago

Similar rank now - i was 40K last week but did not captain Haaland and dropped to 104k if you have Haaland he's has to be permanent captain surely just owning Salah should be enough for rank climb

          1. Salarrivederci
            • 9 Years
            1 month, 20 days ago

            You’re right.
            Was 30K last GW.

Thing is if you own Salah and (C) Haaland it’s something like:
Salah + fourth/fifth defender against Saka + Pedro This GW.

Salah (C) outscoring Haaland helps big time

            1. Salarrivederci

So you are playing the hope over the probability game - Hope Salah finds his traditional form versus Man U against Haalands traditional weekly points hog and his probability of scoring v Everon continuing - But owning Salah and Haaland does this to you, this is why I sold Salah he's out of form and only a traditional fixture captain choice is not enough

Well. Once again I somewhat agree.

This GW Haaland and Salah have the same chance of an attacking return though.

I play this because I would like to win the whole thing at some point.
Obviously I try to do better each year, and going against Haaland might not be the smartest. On the other hand Salah do add an extra point pr. goal. Odd chance of a CS point, and I do think Everton will be better at the back compared to ManU this GW.

No. Don't gamble captaincy. Fix the weakest parts of you team and ban yourself for hits for 3 gameweeks

Last decision to make. Views appreciated.
      A) Play VVD home to Man Utd or
      B) Senesi away to Crystal Palace

I have the same question, although I also have Munoz and generally avoid two defenders against each other if I can.

Of the two I am playing Virgil. I think both probably concede so going with the home game and also think Virgil's probably more likely to nick something from a corner.

This is where I am at the moment and I have Munoz too - playing him for sure. Seems like Senesi will be 1st sub then. Hey is Enzo doesnt play Senesi plays anyway.

      4ft and 0.7itb

      Raya
      Gabriel Senesi Rodon
      Bruno Semenyo Reijnders Ndiaye
      Haaland Gyökeres Pedro

      Dubravka; Stach, Tarkowski, Andersen

Thinking about Bruno or Ndiaye to Enzo. Possibly even both for Enzo + Sarr. Would that make sense?

I'd roll get to 5ft first, I don't think you need to rush either move.

Which combo do you prefer on WC?
      BB GW9

      A) Eze and DCL
      B) Longstaff and Woltemade

      Also have Saka

      My next two transfers:

      1. Gyokeres - Woltemade
      2. Paqueta - Sarr

I only have 1FT. Which one to do this GW?

Would have to be the latter first, can't be selling Gyökeres ahead of Fulham who are typically bad after international breaks as per Fulham fan Colm Bulger.

Estevao's expected goal involvement per 90 is the highest in the top 5 leagues.

Can't decide whether to pull the WC trigger

      Pope
      Senesi / Porro / Richards / Rodon
      Salah / Semenyo/ Kudus / Reijnders
      Haaland / JP
      (Dub / Grealish / Dorgu / Foster)

      Yes or No?

No. Your team needs a couple of tweaks but not a WC.

I have Haaland and Pedro up front. Wood has been on my bench but can sell him this week. Who to go with?

      Bowen
      Waltemade
      Mateta

Waltemade looks decent but Bowen is proven and Mateta has the stats and once he starts scoring normally streaks. Flip some coins

Bowen is my 1st choice I think but a case can be made for the other 2. Mateta is getting the chances and I think onlyba matternof time before he starts banging them in. Might do Bowen this week and Mateta for Pedro if he blanks the next couple

Bowen seems obvious to me. A couple of back to back goals and suddenly you've just earned yourself 0.4 team value and a 0.2 profit.

        A -or B for me

majority will say woltermade because he is new and flashy and settled quite well and priced well

Im going for my reliable bowen because hes proven and now has good old nuno at the helm

think either options are very much valid to pick from tbh

      Hi all,
Seeking some feedback on the below trade options:
      A) Roll & play Rondon (bur)
      B) Gyokeres & Grealish to Woltemade/ Bowen & Saka for -4
      C) Grealish to Enzo/ Sarr

Really confused about my transfer plan.
      A. Gyok + Bruno to Saka + Bowen
      B. Bruno + Gakpo to I. Sarr + Saka
      C. Bruno to I. Sarr and save 1 FT

      Pope
      Gabriel Timber Senesi
      Enzo Saka Semenyo Sarr
      Haaland João Pedro Bowen

      Dúbravka Rodon Andersen Dewsbury-Hall

I need to save 0.6 but don’t want to change starting 11. Who should I get? Options?
