Michael Laudrup continued his restructuring of the Swansea first-team squad late last week by snapping up Ki Sung-Yueng from Glasgow Celtic on a three-year contract. The South Korean arrives for a club record undisclosed fee and, having been granted international clearance, made his debut for the in-form Welsh club in this evening’s Carling Cup match with Barnsley:

Ki is the fourth signing of the summer, following Jonathan De Guzman, Chico and Michu to the club as Laudrup quickly puts his own stamp on the Liberty Stadium outfit. With money to spend, Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins took time out to explain the arrival of the highly-rated 23 year old:

Having lost Joe Allen recently, it was vital that we invested the money wisely by bringing quality young footballers into the club with potential to grow further. Ki fulfils that criteria and everyone in the football club is excited about the prospect of him playing and developing with us. His tactical awareness and quality has been there for everyone to see, especially playing for his country, and he is well suited to our style of football.

The Statistics

The 6 foot 2 central midfielder’s career began in his native country with FC Seoul in the 2007-08 campaign. Over three seasons at the club, he made 64 appearances and scored seven times, with the highlight proving to be a runners-up spot in the J-League in 2008. Ki made his way to Celtic midway through the 2009-10 campaign, with the Glasgow giants beating off interest from the likes PSV and Porto to acquire his services for £2.1m.

Ki’s first half-season at Parkhead was clearly a bedding-in exercise as he adapted to the more physical Scottish Premier League – he managed a couple of assists over his 10 league appearances for Neil Lennon’s side but the following term he established himself as a key member of the Hoops’ first-team. Three goals and four assists in the 2010-11 season was comfortably exceeded last time round as Ki produced six goals and six assists to help Celtic clinch the Premier League title and earn himself the South Korean Footballer of the Year for 2011 award. The Swansea new boy has already featured for his country on 47 occasions, finding the net five times.

The Prospects

Known as the “Korean Steven Gerrard”, Ki has plenty of quality attributes in his locker. His strong work ethic in the centre of the park, allied with superb distribution from deep and long range shooting, looks the perfect fit for Laudrup’s burgeoning side.

While the new man in charge has altered the roles of the two Swansea wide men to devastating effect so far, the 4-3-3 formation is sure to be maintained – bearing in mind that Ki is the club’s record buy, you’d expect him to be earmarked for a regular role under Laudrup. With Michu firmly established as the advanced central midfielder in support of Danny Graham, it’s likely that Ki will take over from either Jonathan De Guzman or Leon Britton as one of the two deep-lying Swans midfielders. De Guzman’s versatility means he could be shifted to the wing – with Scott Sinclair on the verge of leaving, the Dutchman could vie with Wayne Routledge for the left flank berth. Alternatively, De Guzman could remain in a more defensive role, with Britton making way for the South Korean instead.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, Ki’s defensive midfield role is likely to earn him a mid-price valuation across the board. FPL-wise, a price of around 5.5 seems the likeliest scenario; while his set-piece capabilities also boost to his appeal, it’s unlikely Ki will find a way in many Fantasy teams at the moment, with Michu and Nathan Dyer the obvious targets in Laudrup’s free-scoring midfield.

With Swansea afforded four home fixtures (SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) in the next six Gameweeks, however, Ki will be afforded plenty opportunity to impress – in the current Fantasy climate, all it may take is a trademark 30-yarder from the South Korean for another Liberty bandwagon to start rolling.

    Beovich // Foster

    Figueroa - Baines - Rangel - Cuellar - Hughes

Thanks. Dropping Kagawa for AJ has allowed me to have a better defence. I would think RvP is enough for ManU coverage.

A little concerned about doubling up on Newcastle offence.

Ok so quick 1 for u as I can’t decide.

Baines & Nasri (Or mid up to 8.8 From next week)

    or

Saylor / Gallas / Kaboul & Hazard from next GW. Who is the best Spurs option of the 2?

    Any help appreciated.

For me, I really don't understand the Baines love. He costs a lot and let's face it, you get a defender for the amount of CS you think he'll get (obviously Everton will get a lot). But for that price, you can easily get a City/Man Utd/Chelsea defender who will get more. That's just my opinion. And as for Hazard, it seems as though he is a must :p

But being on Pens & Set Pieces, he's almost a midfielder, that gets the points for Clean Sheets as well. Real tough 1 this, I may actually go for Baines ahead of Hazard.

Option A - although not 100 sold on Nasri.

Worried about not having Hazard, looking at the fixtures, they have the best run in the next 4. of the big teams. But really want Baines. It's a toughy. With Baines not rising today i may have another day to ponder this 1.

I am thinking Hazard is owned by so many that perhaps Torres (given his current form is an indication that he is reverting to somewhere near the old Torres) is a prudent way of getting Chelsea coverage?

Also means you can afford Baines who is playing his way into my team at present.

I'm wondering the same thing. Have Vidic and Kagawa, but thinking of losing Vidic soon. I think RVP is going to be game changer - If he is on fire you must have him, or the game will pass you by. If not, then money better spent elsewhere. Question is whether you take the risk?

Yea im worried about lescott id like 2 trade him but the only ways into a nailed on city cs is kompany or hart. As clichy and lescott are bound to rotate, lescott may rotate with kolo and zaba will be pushed onto the bench once richards returns. I'm not liking the position in which silva is playing as there is a lack of fluidity which is vital for Silva to succeed, but due to him becoming more of a differentialand out of the hope tha the regains form I want to keep him.

Right, boring poll question time Deadzoners:

    A) Nzog > Dyer this week for a hit (cash to upgrade Ivanovic to Baines or Bale to Hazard next week)

    B) Nzog > McLean for a hit (no cash for Hazard or Baines upgrades next week)

Gaz Downright, or anyone who cares about Spurs at all....am I the only one who thinks signing Dembele is the stupidest way to spend the Modric Kitty imaginable?

We already have a perfectly good midfield.
We pretty much have perfectly good everything......except for finishing. It was our problem last year and our problem this year so far. We would almost always boss the game, win the ball, and create more chances, but we can't finish. Even With ade, we have a striker who does everything but finish. Now we have yet ANOTHER ball winning midfielder (thats makes FOUR) and still no striking options.

So basically we spent a bunch of money buying a player just like the ones we already have, instead of spending the money to fix the big reason we have failed in the past 2 years.

Surely he is better than Sandro or Livermore though? Obviously Parker would be the other CM when he returns from injury.

With the remaining money surely you would have enough to get another striker.

What do you want then? You've already bought a striker which gives you 2 options in that position and Spurs practically always play with just one forward. Gylfi and and Van der Vaart are your typical goalscoring mids. Parker is your scrapper and now you've got Dembele.

And Dembele isn't a ball winning mid just because he's been playing deeper recently for Fulham, he's no more a ball winner than Scholes. IMO you're getting a quality versatile player that can carry the ball, pick a pass and has a decent shot on him.

Lampard SCORES though: his finishing is excellent. I'm not faulting Dembele for his finishing: its not what he is SUPPOSED to do.

I just look at us as a team who just dropped 15 mil and really doesn't look any more likely to win games. What does Dembele help us do? Create more chances? We CANT create more chances then we have had the past two games.

We don't need more creativeity: we need finishing and we have just spent 15 mil without improving one that one iota.

I'm almost certain you guys will have bought another striker before deadline day to possibly replace Defoe who will go somewhere else. I will be very surprised if you haven't. You can panic now but you'll get your striker I think, along with a new keeper.

Fair enough then I understand that point entirely. You are of course assuming you won't buy a striker. You have plenty of the Modric cash left over and it would make sense that you would get two players with that. A replacement for Modric in the form of Dembele and a striker. With other sales you should have enough funds to get a keeper as well.

To me I think Sandro is not good enough to be a starter for Spurs, he is good to have as cover but you really need a quality player to replace the immense quality that Modric brought to Spurs.

See, that was the thing with Modric, even: great player who can't shoot to save his life. We're weaker without him, but I'm not really that sad to see him go. We lose some creativity....but between Bale, VDV, Lennon, Gylfi, and Ade, we had more than enough creators....we need to stop wasting all the chances every single game. If anything, Dembele is a far BETTER finisher than Modric, but all we really seem to have done here is spend 15 mil for a player who adds somethign we never needed while there is still a gaping hope at the front.

Your so wrong on Dembele and your team its ridiculous. A big reason for your success over the last few years was because of Modric, sure the guy doesn't show up on the scoresheet often but he was a very, very good player, he controlled the tempo was good on the ball and help to set up the play through his deep lying distribution. Its like saying Barca are only good because of Messi, ignoring the work Iniesta, Xavi and Busquets who work tirelessly in Midfield and completely dictate games by having the opposition chase them around all day and by winning the ball back.

Dembele is probably the strongest midfielder on the ball I can think of, he never loses it, he scores more than a guy like Modric since he can shoot from distance and his distribution is pretty good and he can tackle, so hes a real box to box player. Sure you need goalscoring but Ade is your striker, should'nt have bought him if your not happy with his output, need one more striker probably but hes going to be sparsely used, but by and far games are won in the midfield, its where the game is dictated and Dembele is really good in all facets deep in the midfield, doing the work to keep possession and generate the ball in the right areas to lead to goals. Oh and Lampard is the worst player in Chelsea's 11 right now, he loses possesion so much and does'nt really do anything well other than take his chances and for a deep lying midfield those are'nt many, he only plays becasue of history and when Di Mateo benches him for Ramires or Meireles Chelsea will be much better off.

yeah, we have 2 options at striker.......and neither of them are goalscorers. Thats the problem.

I totally agree that he is more versatile then JUST a Ball winner....but my point is that we were totally set at midfield. We didn't need to drop 15 mil on another midfielder. That money should be used to stop the one glaring reason we are losing games: we don't have anyone who can score.

Against Newcastle your midfield looked quite flimsy without Modric and Parker and ye were on the back foot for spells. Look at City last season or even Liverpool several seasons ago, if you pack the midfield with players that can pass and retain the ball your defence will be so much better off for it.

I guess I saw the Newcastle game pretty differently than you. I never thought our midfield was flimsy. I thought we bossed the game with possession and passing. Newcastle have a good midfeild, and I think especially in the first half, we were casually dominant.

Stick Dembele in for Livermore in that game and I don't see a different result, do you? Our problem there wasn't possession or passing: it was finishing the multitude of chances.

Sandro, Livermore or Parker starting as 2 of your deep lieing midfield is a big problem, too much ball winning not enough creativity. There was a reason Chelsea and now Madrid were willing to pay so much for Modric. But I guess it makes sense from a Spurs fan to not understand soccer. AYYOOO

Spurs don't have a player who can drive from deep like Dembele. Sig and VDV are great attacking midfielders but lack the drive and stamina required to play in midfield. Dembele tore United apart last week because of these abilities. When he drives forward like that he draws out defenders leaving space for Lennon, Bale, Sig, VDV, Adebayor or whoever is playing in front of him at the time. Spurs only need one more striker anyway and have plenty of cash left to bring one in.

Bale has been 'drawing out defenders' for years, and it hasn't improved our scoring. Sure, I think Dembele can draw out defender and create space, but then what? He passes it to Bale, Ade, VDV, Lennon............and the chance is going to end up being wasted. He is another creator on a team full of creators with no finish.

Your saying Bale Adebayor and VDV can't finish?? Not to mention Siggy is in the mix now too. On the drawing out defenders thing, Bale does that on the wing so its not the same as leaving space in the middle and even then, Bale has created plenty of goals for spurs in the past couple of seasons

Bale hasn't scored in the league since Jaruary. No, he can't finish. Adebayor can't finish at all. Great passer, great at holding up the ball: he can't finish. He is a good assisting striker but not a point man. VDV is hot and cold...and half the time hes hot hes injured.

Gylfi is a great finisher, but he's not really a striker and it already seems like AVB prefers VDV.

              Bales - 10 goals - 14 assists

              VDV - 11 goasl - 7 assists

Spurs scored the 4th highest amount of goals last season in the Prem and that was without Sig

I'm not even worried about the tactics: we totally outplayed both Newcastle and West Brom. Our system created tons of chances...there was just no one there to finish them.Certainly no worse than last year.

Sure, the stats look fine in that regard, but consider how ice cold they all got when we needed them down the stretch last year: we created tons of chances, and they just stopped going in. If you compare goals converted to chances created, our percentage was incredibly low. Its the reason we backslid, really.

Missed seeing you last week leading up to our H2H matchup. I was nervous that my points hits were going to cost me, but not the case.

      A) Makes a nice trade to sell Petric for Lukaku at some point as well.

I'd have A with Graham. He could and should have scored a hattrick last game and they play Villa in gw4.

I agree as thats the situation I have but that also means doubling up on Swansea, which may or may not be a bad thing in the short term.

The subs will have to play as well, sometimes. Maybe not now as the season has just started but the injuries, suspensions and general tiredness will mount up as the season progresses and the Champs League begins. You can also forget all your star players playing in all four games over Christmas as well. There will be heavy rotation. You've got to have a squad where all 15 are guaranteed starters. So, no De jong, Sterling or Moore for a kick off.

        Hey Gaz,
Sorry I missed you the other morning/evening/afternoon. Had to run the kids to school Looks like you went ahead and WC, if I read your comments correctly, but yes, you were reading my thoughts correctly re: RVP and midfielders.

Any improvements on this team, and suggested transfers for GW3?

    Begovic (jasskalainen)

    Cole Rangel Gibbs Rafael (Clyne)

    Yaya Kagawa Hazard Fellaini (Sterling)

    RvP Tevez (Kane)

With 0.5 in bank, what should i do with Chelsea players as well?

Is that Kane from Spurs? what's he doing in there.

You could just swap Ivanovich to Zabaletta or Baines and have 1 sub in Clyne in case Rafael Sterling gets benched or something. Or downgrade Ivan to a cheapie like Cuellar or McCartney and upgrade Kane to Petric / Lambert.
