Jermain Defoe is at the double as Spurs register their first win under Andre Villas-Boas at the fourth attempt. Gareth Bale opens his account for the season in a 3-1 win at the Madejski, though the visitors’ clean sheet is ruined late on thanks to a strike from Hal Robson-Kanu…

Jermain Defoe
A fourth start of the season saw the striker score twice to earn the points for Spurs. In spite of Tottenham’s toils, Defoe has now provided three goals and an assist for his Fantasy owners and is the top scoring Spurs player in FPL with 22 points; his strong start looks to have kept him in pole position for the lone forward role right now, with Emmanuel Adebayor left to warm the bench. Many had expected Adebayor to automatically be installed into the first XI as soon as his fitness is fine but, at the moment, it seems like the spot is Defoe’s to lose – with four home games in the next six, including (QPR, AVL, WIG) he could well be set to plunder the points once again.

Spurs Midfield
Having drawn blanks in each of his first three Gameweeks, Gareth Bale had been sold in huge numbers across the Fantasy games. To date, the Welshman has been transferred out by 185,000 FPL managers and dropped 0.2 in price already but his goal against Reading proved a bitter blow to those who chose to ship him out. While Gylfi Sigurdsson continues to struggle and with Clint Dempsey earning game time from the bench, Bale is currently the only one of Spurs’ highly-priced midfield trio looking capable of producing during the above-mentioned run of fixtures.

Aaron Lennon picked up his second assist of the season yet continues to fly under the radar, with less than 4% ownership. His acquisition could appeal to those who fancy a punt on Spurs but are not quite willing to spend over the odds – at 7.0 in FPL to Bale’s 9.3, for example, he’s been the better value so far. Moussa Dembele was handed his first start and looks to have immediately settled alongside Sandro in the double-pivot. While many were hoping for a more attacking role, it seems the Belgian will be tasked with his share of defensive duties in the current 4-2-3-1.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto
The Cameroon international could be set for a shprt-term spell on the sidelines, according to Villas-Boas…

“Benoit has a small fragment in his knee that makes it swell a lot. He has played through pain in the last couple of games. His knee may have to be washed out and if that happens we are looking at a four-week absence.”

If Assou-Ekotto is indeed sidelined, Kyle Naughton looks set to benefit. The youngster filled in at left-back yesterday and offers a cut-price route into the Tottenham defence – priced at 4.5 in the Sky Sports game and 4.4 in FPL (compared to Kyle Walker’s 6.5 in the latter game) he could be a real differential at the back for those willing to take a real punt.

Reading Tactics
Brian McDermott once again rolled out a 4-4-1-1, with Danny Guthrie tucked in behind lone frontman Pavel Pogrebnyak. With his side a goal down at half-time, however, the Reading boss tinkered with his formation – a move to 4-4-2 saw Guthrie drop deeper into the midfield four as Adam Le Fondre climbed off the bench to partner the Russian up top. Le Fondre’s introduction cancelled out the Spurs clean sheet late on, after he teed up Hal Robson-Kanu for a consolation. While Guthrie’s starting role in “the hole†adds to his appeal, it’s clear that McDermott is willing to change his position when chasing games – a position Reading are finding themselves in frequently right now.

Adam Federici & Alex McCarthy
Declared fit and available by Reading after pulling out of the Australian squad in the week, Brian McDermott revealed post-match that Adam Federici was in fact still being troubled by a knee problem. Subsequently dropped in favour of Alex McCarthy in yesterday’s match, the Reading boss has revealed that Federici will also miss the trip to West Brom next weekend before he can return to compete with McCarthy for the number one jersey.

“I decided to make a change and put Alex in, it was a tactical decision but Adam has also got an issue with his knee so we need to have a real good look at that and get it sorted. He could be out for a little while, he has to recuperate and when he comes back he’ll be challenging for that position…He certainly won’t be playing at West Brom, like I said I don’t know how long it will be, it’ll be a while”

The Federici-David De Gea combination was a popular one at the start of the season but the duo have failed to feature over the past two Gameweeks – a hugely frustrating situation which is currently being addressed, judging by the transfers in so far. Meanwhile, Alex McCarthy has emerged as a potential new budget candidate. Currently there are no active 4.0 keepers in the FPL – McCarthy is the first to make a full appearance this season and, if he can cement a run of starts, he could offer those seeking to free up funds a new route.

I assume I am the only idiot with Adebayor still? The fact I binned Podolski to get him a few weeks ago makes it all the more enjoyable.

still happy with my transfer tbf.
hazard was very attacking and came close to a pen and goal.
moreover, the .5m increase in price mean that won't be able to afford him now if I didn't transfer him earlier on

Repost due to posting just as this new article went up ^^

Posted up a piece on the viability of an all mid priced forward line in the preseason before GW1. I won’t bore yous with it again, though will link if anyone is interested.

I suggested that a possible viable alternative this year could be to pick up a few mid priced forwards, such as Tevez, Ba, Jellyfish etc and use the additional funds saved to invest elsewhere in our squads. Basically the idea was that only 3 big forwards existed, Rooney, RVP and Aguero. Now imo, Rooney has showed previously he does not profit FPL wise when working with another world class striker (see previous seasons with Tevez/CR7). RVP has to average around 8 points per 90 played to justify his cost, and that is just about justifying it, so your already effectively paying for his upside. BTW, last season he averaged 8 points per 90P.

Now, if you think he can sustain those numbers this season, then he is probably worth it for the captaincy alone. But if you like me, think Rooney will take some of the limelight at some point or that others represent better value, then the mid priced striker route may be for you.

I think it is reasonable to say, Tevez, Berbatov, Fletcher, Ba, Podolski, Jelavic and Suerez all look good shouts for hitting double figures in goals this season and bringing some useful points per million spent for owners. Perhaps, great value in the cases of Tevez, Berba, Ba and Pod.

Now, issues to consider before jumping aboard this route is that a certain confidence will be needed to stick the armband on any of the big mids (Cazorla, Bale, Hazard etc) or one of your mid priced strikers. Id say if the fixtures and form suit, id feel comfortable with this, but others may seek the safety and explosiveness of RVP. Saying that, Tevez to date has being a very safe armband choice. Aguero coming back into town could change this and it remains to see if rotation will kick in later on in the season. Now for my money, Aguero is a great bet as a big striker, so that is a disclaimer right there.

Rather then pushing my warez or gloating, id like to think this post is for anyone WC or without RVP and considering there options. Imo, there is viable alternatives to the template squads so often posted on here. Easier to suggest after a weekend like last perhaps, but RVP will come good some days and you will just have to grin and bear it, hopefully the extra funds redistributed throughout your squad make the difference to close any gap on those weeks.

It’s a thought to consider at least.

As always a nice read thanks , Id have to agree a lot there with you Brian, as I've yet to play my w/c I'm thinking a lot about rvp ( whom I currently have )
Consider this Berba + Fletch = Rvp more or less from a cost point of view, both should hit the 15 + goal mark , and this allows the likes of Verm/Baines and 4 big Mf into your team.

Cheers lad! It's certainly the idea in theory. Biggest issue is the armband, if RVP consistently delivers like last year, then he is probably worth owning for the captaincy issue. It's a matter if whether you believe he will or not.

And as I say, I fancy Aguero to offer perhaps the best value of the big forwards, so one to consider down the line.

Yes...Reading are shit. And if he did think he is a 90 minute manthen I would agree he's lost all sort of plots. But to me...as a Gunners fan...so no love. It just looks like he'sholding out for full fitness. Does he have more faith in Sandro than I would yes. But it's up to a Dembele in my opinion to force his prescence out there and it appears the old guard: defoe, sandro and lennon are filling tthe vacuum with the time they have left...which ain't much longer imho.

Morning lads. Is this team fixable without using my W/C? FT already used and 2.5 in bank:

    Foster (Fed)
Rangel | Demel | Baines (Gorkss | Zab)
Hazard | Michu | Yaya | Kags (Guthrie)
    Adebayor | Graham | Tevez

Worried about Zabs and Ade (and possibly Tevez) gametime. Fed's injured and his two teammates are shit.

Will be shipping Ade out today (possibly for Fletcher) whatever happens as he's decreasing in value overnight.

    Krul (Begovic)
    Baines Demel Boyce (Cuellar Rangel)
    HBA Kagawa Bale(c) Mitchu (Sterling)
    RVP Tevez Graham

Now I have 2 free transfers but £0m in bank. Kagawa and Graham are both common outs but I got the same feeling I had with Bale this week. I feel they are due.

I have more issues with Baines and Rangel tbh not got too much faith in Baines when away but with what I pay I got to start him regardless.

Would Rangel>Nelson makes sense and use the extra mil to change Graham +1 next week?

Just get a defender if you think your 3rd defender will score 0. You can cover the keeper issue unlike people with DDG & Federici.

Depends, are you happy with your Big hitters? If yes, then no id not WC. Tbh I think your team is okay, few transfers over the next few GW's to patch it up and you will be grand. Not ideal in defense, but that happens with our original squads.

Yeah the conservative plan would be to maybe take one hit for a defender this week and gradually over a couple of weeks fix my defence. The downside is that I would require my midfield and strikers to do the buisness for the next few gameweeks while I get the defence sorted. I won't have much flexibility to make changes there.

Not even sure id take the hit tbh, Zab is a rotation risk, but could still easily play next week. If you feel confident you can throw out 3 defenders and a keeper this week, id sit tight and do a transfer next week and so forth.

Save the WC for when the turd really hits the fan imo. If it makes you feel better, in a similar situation with my back line. Have the faith in my offense to pull through, and tbh yours looks grand as well.

    New WBA Nor Rdg

You would think that Spurs could have managed at least ONE cleansheet?!

But NOOOOO! It is on these minor matters that seasons are won and lost...

Again, AVB, you are a moron sir

Newcastle, then injury time, 85th minute, injury time. Having Vertonghen for the last three has been three late kicks in the balls.

        ...for one week.

Anyone see the Chelsea game? Is QPR's defence finally picking up where they left off last season or were they just lucky?

Or to put it another way, get Nelsen soon?

No. Its your defence that is in most immediate need of repair. Sadly it is the captain choice to date that is giving the biggest differential. And look how many of us are getting that wrong 😉 so you are not alone buddy

Selling Bale could become same as selling Graham for Berba next week. I think I've never chased points that much in my fantasy football carеer. That isn't the formula for success as I remember. Anybody there to say wise words. Anyone playing his own game and not going with the masses? This price rices are killing it

considering berba created 7 chances and was the lynchpin of fulhams attack, vs graham who roams around having 1 or 2 chances per game at max and rarely get an assist opportunity.. berba is a much better buy

I am doing a bit better than last year, despite this weekend. And I think Lennon might well be the answer.

Well, I can't do any worse...

If and when I play my WC, I'm just gonna go with what I think is best... and I have a few left field options up my sleeve...

Yeah, the insane price rises do not help at all...

Well I brought Bale in instead of Hazard last GW, so I guess you could say I was playing my own game. The stats said Bale looked good, he converted it to points this week and has the fixtures to kick on.

Berba has the stats (limited date mind you) and the fixtures, id say it's a pretty great option. The masses are correct in this case. Though if you want to be different, Ba at 7.7 has had allot of shots so far, is playing centrally and his record over his league career speaks for itself. Could easily come good soon and has the fixtures.

I'm sitting on him for now, may get Berba in if Ba fails to shine in next two.
