Jermain Defoe is at the double as Spurs register their first win under Andre Villas-Boas at the fourth attempt. Gareth Bale opens his account for the season in a 3-1 win at the Madejski, though the visitors’ clean sheet is ruined late on thanks to a strike from Hal Robson-Kanu…

Jermain Defoe
A fourth start of the season saw the striker score twice to earn the points for Spurs. In spite of Tottenham’s toils, Defoe has now provided three goals and an assist for his Fantasy owners and is the top scoring Spurs player in FPL with 22 points; his strong start looks to have kept him in pole position for the lone forward role right now, with Emmanuel Adebayor left to warm the bench. Many had expected Adebayor to automatically be installed into the first XI as soon as his fitness is fine but, at the moment, it seems like the spot is Defoe’s to lose – with four home games in the next six, including (QPR, AVL, WIG) he could well be set to plunder the points once again.

Spurs Midfield
Having drawn blanks in each of his first three Gameweeks, Gareth Bale had been sold in huge numbers across the Fantasy games. To date, the Welshman has been transferred out by 185,000 FPL managers and dropped 0.2 in price already but his goal against Reading proved a bitter blow to those who chose to ship him out. While Gylfi Sigurdsson continues to struggle and with Clint Dempsey earning game time from the bench, Bale is currently the only one of Spurs’ highly-priced midfield trio looking capable of producing during the above-mentioned run of fixtures.

Aaron Lennon picked up his second assist of the season yet continues to fly under the radar, with less than 4% ownership. His acquisition could appeal to those who fancy a punt on Spurs but are not quite willing to spend over the odds – at 7.0 in FPL to Bale’s 9.3, for example, he’s been the better value so far. Moussa Dembele was handed his first start and looks to have immediately settled alongside Sandro in the double-pivot. While many were hoping for a more attacking role, it seems the Belgian will be tasked with his share of defensive duties in the current 4-2-3-1.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto
The Cameroon international could be set for a shprt-term spell on the sidelines, according to Villas-Boas…

“Benoit has a small fragment in his knee that makes it swell a lot. He has played through pain in the last couple of games. His knee may have to be washed out and if that happens we are looking at a four-week absence.”

If Assou-Ekotto is indeed sidelined, Kyle Naughton looks set to benefit. The youngster filled in at left-back yesterday and offers a cut-price route into the Tottenham defence – priced at 4.5 in the Sky Sports game and 4.4 in FPL (compared to Kyle Walker’s 6.5 in the latter game) he could be a real differential at the back for those willing to take a real punt.

Reading Tactics
Brian McDermott once again rolled out a 4-4-1-1, with Danny Guthrie tucked in behind lone frontman Pavel Pogrebnyak. With his side a goal down at half-time, however, the Reading boss tinkered with his formation – a move to 4-4-2 saw Guthrie drop deeper into the midfield four as Adam Le Fondre climbed off the bench to partner the Russian up top. Le Fondre’s introduction cancelled out the Spurs clean sheet late on, after he teed up Hal Robson-Kanu for a consolation. While Guthrie’s starting role in “the hole” adds to his appeal, it’s clear that McDermott is willing to change his position when chasing games – a position Reading are finding themselves in frequently right now.

Adam Federici & Alex McCarthy
Declared fit and available by Reading after pulling out of the Australian squad in the week, Brian McDermott revealed post-match that Adam Federici was in fact still being troubled by a knee problem. Subsequently dropped in favour of Alex McCarthy in yesterday’s match, the Reading boss has revealed that Federici will also miss the trip to West Brom next weekend before he can return to compete with McCarthy for the number one jersey.

“I decided to make a change and put Alex in, it was a tactical decision but Adam has also got an issue with his knee so we need to have a real good look at that and get it sorted. He could be out for a little while, he has to recuperate and when he comes back he’ll be challenging for that position…He certainly won’t be playing at West Brom, like I said I don’t know how long it will be, it’ll be a while”

The Federici-David De Gea combination was a popular one at the start of the season but the duo have failed to feature over the past two Gameweeks – a hugely frustrating situation which is currently being addressed, judging by the transfers in so far. Meanwhile, Alex McCarthy has emerged as a potential new budget candidate. Currently there are no active 4.0 keepers in the FPL – McCarthy is the first to make a full appearance this season and, if he can cement a run of starts, he could offer those seeking to free up funds a new route.

      Too much money on keepers

Update defence - Cueller may be out a while, Clyne plays for a team who leak like a sieve.

      Kags - opinion varies.

      Graham same.

How’s my team looking for GW5?

    Jussi

    Baines Demel Davies

    Michu Bale(c) Santi Hazard

    Berba Tevez RVP

    Subs: Henderson Sterling Jenkinson Gorkss

I know my sub goalie is a problem, but I plan to catch 2 price rises from Sterling (fingers crossed) by next gw. I will use my FTs to ship out Sterling, Henderson, Jenkinson and Davies for a Guthrie, Begovic, 4.5 and a 4.0…this will happen over the next 4 GWs when Begovic’s nightmare fixtures loosen up

Aside from the 0.2m price rise this week, what is the rush to get Berb in?

Granted he's class but Fulham away is a totally different team. They play Wigan away and then city at
Home, two difficult fixtures. No rush in my opinion.

A general rule that I try to follow as much as possible is ALWAYS wait with transfers until Friday.

You don't hear it too much on here these days since people have gone bonkers with the quick price rises, but I still think this very much applies.

The game is about scoring points and not making money after all...

Fulham's fixtures look good to me in the short term. And who is to say they will continue last year's poor away form, particularly with a former golden boot up front and eager to prove himself all over again.

Can't believe even that beast of a Scout team is only on 33 points (assuming RVP(C) ) with 2 to play. Might scrape 50 if Everton have a blinder I guess.

Planned transfers these next two weeks, thoughts?

    GW5 - Podolski> Berbatov & De Gea> Howard (-4)
    GW6 - Torres> Aguero (Leaves 1mil in the bank.)

    Gives this team next week:

    Howard (Federici)
    Hangeland Clark Rangel
    Nolan Hazard Michu Kagawa/Kacaniklic
    Torres(c) RVP Berbatov(vc)

Foster actually rotates very well with your second keeper Federici who is, albeit, unlikely to play... but still...

Even if you don't plan to rotate them, Foster is good for all his games, since he is likely to get a few saves points in the matches without CS IMO...

Makes no real difference to the transfer market, though. The NTI thereshold is based on the number of active players, the NTO based on ownership. So yes, agreed there have been more transfers - but, like you say, there are more players - so this is expected. Prices have been just as volatile as they were las season.

This week brings up another contentious issue that might ruin my chances of a decent score...

I have 5 players in the SWA v EVE game, and 3 players in the MCI v ARS game... and in both games I have attackers v defenders... what is the best possible outcome?

I reckon I need the Swansea game to finish 3-2 or something, and hope my defenders (Rangel and Baines) provide some assists for my attacking players (Michu, Graham and Pienaar)...

Wishful thinking I know, but I really need something to go right for me this week...

If Jinswick is still around (or anyone with McCartney), my two cents on McCartney at WHam:

Picked up a knock for FUL game, so OBrien filled in, we were brilliant and kept a CS, so Big Sam kept the defence unchanged for NOR, despite McCart being fit, who was on the bench.
Yes we kept another CS, but we're less convincing at the back, and OBrien made one horrific mistake especially when NOR should've scored.
So I expect/hope McCart starts the next game instead of OBrien.

    Lads,

Was about to press CONFIRM on Petric to Berba... but i cant help but feel that FLETCHER might be a better transfer over the medium term....

Fletcher is the main man at Sunderland, with good providers and seemingly better fixtures over the next 10, with only really CITY AWAY a solid game in the next 10....

BERBS is class but is one of 3 strikers who will most likely be rotated and has tricky couple of upcoming fixtures....

    BERBS OR FLETCHER..... OR OTHER?

Very interesting to see Goal Attempts for both teams both over the whole season and the current gameweek... without giving too much info away it is clear Fulham have been the most active, however i still feel that these extra attempts and better accuracy statistics are somewhat diluted by the fact that he is 1 of 3 strikers, AND that the loss of Dembele may have weakened their midfield somewhat, though only time will tell how much...

It does seem at present like i should go for Berba... but i can just imagine johnson, mcclean, larrson all combining to give Fletcher some foundations from which to EXPLODE in my berba tinted sunglasses....

I am looking forward to the article ANDY mentions below.. sounds like it will be welcomed (Sooner rather than later please)....

I think i prefer Fletcher as he seems to have the ability to score against all the stronger teams too, and is less of a flat track bully. Fulham's away form is iffy so i don't think Berbatov will be as consistent. It's a close one though. Sunderland's fixtures just edge it for me too.

Fletch seems to be solid - but rarely explodes. Berba has a tendency to explode. Both of them also have a history of going on 2pt runs - so I'd go for Berba purely based on those 'golden' weeks.

      Berba.

Fletcher has had 3 shots in 2 games and scored 3 goals. People keep saying he has good providers but they've only added Johnson. Last season they struggled to create many chances for Bendtner. Not saying he's not a good pick but i'd back Berba to score more. Berba is also likely to get you assists whereas Fletcher won't.

Stay clear for Ramirez, maybe Nasri to Morrison or Pienaar

Ramirez just seems such a nice differential - Sot'ons fixtures are easing up, they score goals and he's a class above.

Agree. Many was saying stay away from Michu and look what happened there.

Nothing wrong with an early punt, might work, might not.

No need. I have Jussi as well so when I start him I jinx myself.

He's 3rd sub on my bench looking at me and laughing.

Probably won't do this but would be fun to get Lindegaard in for Federici so I always have a United keeper. I realise this would be a waste of a United position though.

I don't think there's many Man Utd players that are really needed anyway.

If you put Gerrard and Lamps in a ring to fight to the death who would win?
