The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sinful Saint

Last weekend it was Dimitar Berbatov, this evening it’s Rickie Lambert that will be wandering into our minds mid-conversation, over the Saturday evening tipple. Prompting nagging doubt, questioning our best-laid plans.

Lambert is the latest to cause cracks in our established Fantasy thinking. Like the Bulgarian, he arrives in a Gameweek where, once again, the likes of Eden Hazard and Michu – assets who were cemented in our squads – returned blanks. The foundations of the template team again come in question then, with Lambert joining the queue to find a place in our forward lines that looked so settled just a fortnight ago.

There’s little doubt that, as we suggested in the midweek Watchlist article, Lambert has emerged as the budget striker of choice. However, we also spent some time in said article pondering if he could be more than that. If he could displace the array of mid-price assets fighting for our attentions – Dimitar Berbatov, Steven Fletcher, Jermain Defoe. Tonight, I’m even wondering if he can threaten to break up the heavy-hitter pairings.

I’ll be watching Carlos Tevez carefully against Arsenal. While he’s flourished in the opening matches, Sergio Aguero’s return to fitness and Roberto Mancini’s “nine lives” approach to Mario Baltoelli raises a cause for concern. That’s before we consider that Eden Dzeko has, as he’s done so often, found the net when he’s given pitch time.

A Tevez blank or, worse still, an early withdrawal against Arsenal, could trigger a rethink. There’s little doubt that City have the fixtures to find goals in the coming weeks, but growing concerns about their defence and Mancini’s insistence that it must approve, has raised alarm bells for me.

I remember when City battened down the hatches, when they fought for 1-0 wins away from home. Should Mancini take that route again, we could see 4-5-1 with Yaya Toure behind Aguero away from home, something that would hurt Tevez’ scoring potential immeasurably. While Sir Alex appears to be going all out for goals, will Mancini dare to tweak his tactics to tighten up?

Such thoughts crop up before I even consider the merits of sticking with the ultra-expensive Robin Van Persie, under the threat of rotation and rest. I’m trying to fight those doubts off, however.

There is clearly a very attractive plan B forming. Lambert, like Berbatov, offers assured starts. He offers the “big fish in a small pond” scenario. He offers spot-kicks, assists and he faces a long line of fixtures that could bring further returns. The temptation to go with this option, even over the proven class of Tevez, does begin to mount when you consider that Mancini’s whims can waver and throw us the unexpected.

This kind of talk is almost sinful, “Knee Jerk” material of the highest order. We’re talking about supreme Fantasy assets here, while Lambert is perhaps just a noisy new arrival at the party. Four goals in five games is a decent entrance, however, and certainly Tevez will need to offer a reminder of his class on Sunday if tonight’s bout of puzzle-head isn’t to transform into a fully-fledged plan of action.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not sure what to do guys; I've had 2 really bad weeks, but not sure what needs addressing first.

    A. Fabio (injured)
    B. Fed (injured)
    C. Kaca (have Berba)
    D. Hazard (infuriating)
    E. Save FT
    F. Use WC

    Jussi - Fed
    Fabio - Rangel - Cuellar - Ivanovic - Hangeland
    Hazard - Michu - Yaya - Pienaar - Kaca
    RVP - Tevez - Berbatov

Hold tight with minor changes untilGW7 then WC during the internaional break. Things are going to look very different in another couple of weeks id imagine. If anything the big hitters rvp, hazard, tevez etc will be less appealing as xhamps league starts to stretch squads

Fabio 1st. He`ll be out 4 maybe a month. Jussi can cover Fed for the time being. No need to rush into a transfer. Monitor Federici when he comes back. Lotsa save points for Jussi even if he concedes. Nice attack. Kaca`s playing time might be slashed with Ruiz, Duff back. I would give Hazard a few more chances. No need to WC. You already have a super team. Patience and smart rational transfers. Good luck

I have Ivanovic as expensive defender which will play week in week out. Im thinking to do

    Ivanovic -> Baines

Everton fixture look good. All blue in next 6 game compare to Chelsea mixture of 3 red and 3 blue.
But, Baines didn't go to penalty box as frequent as Ivanovic.

Do we think Felliani is a better option than Pienaar?

    What I mean is...

Is Felliani just having a purple patch?
Previous years stats returns are poor? (but he does seem to be playing more forward nowadays)
Pienaar is consistently good on assists?

    So, which is best?

Fellaini a better option ATM. Plays in the hole behind the striker. He's very physical and very familiar with scoring, whereas other years he's played as a Def. Midfielder. On the other hand Pienaar is a great option too. He playes beautifully the right wing with Baines and can assist and score. For as long as Fellaini is gonna keep the advanced position he's worth the extra .4 over Pienaar. Cheers

Pienaar is more of a season player
The left side of Everton with him and Baines is very highly rated and until now he hasn't picked up many goals which means he's gonna score with The good run of fixtures that he has
Fellaini on the other hand is a variable.... One day he's in the hole the other he's in central midfield...
Pienaar>Fellaini unless Fellaini is always playing in the hole
Then it becomes in the hole>winger

good morning sunday morning crew. I was exasperated yesterday and activated my wildcard. feel bad about it now, especially as I have gone for a risky team initially. But, I am delighted with my defence, with the possible exception that I have had to go for A Cole rather than ivanovic to make room to upgrade to Oscar in a couple weeks (Gibbs, Cole, Baines, Olsson, Nelson). Wall of text...

Doesn't sound too bad, but I'd probably get someone other than Cashley with a WC. I doubt he'll have many more attacknig returns and The next few fixtures don't look particualrly good for Chelsea.

How much of a price swing do we thing we will see between and graham and lambert over the next 3 week? I had set up the transfer before the deadline, but must have forgot to confirm. Not I am tempted to keep graham for his two lovely home games, but by then the transfer could be 0.5m+ more expensive. What do you guys reckon?

Don't think about it in terms of coverage. Think about the position.

Is baines the best luxury defender? is pienaar a season keeping mid price mid? I've both and all going well may well still have both gwk38.

I'm even tempted to get Fellaini in for michu. Coverage is overrated .. Look at players and fixtures.

Re-post taking into account backlash above 🙂

good morning sunday morning crew.

I have ditched Hazard and Michu and gone for a differential (?) with Gervinho who according to a source close to the coaching staff at Arsenal is earmarked to play quite a lot through the middle. I have gone for the budget pairing of Nolan and Maloney, and my last midfield place is currently with Fellaini who will probably make way for Oscar (or Gervinho will) at the right time.

Standard up top with Tevez, Berba and RVP for now.

If anyone feels like critically assessing my knee jerk i’d be grateful as I am a bit concerned I have been a numpty

Looks good... And don't worry Nout wildcard ing... I did it gwk 3.

I would however be wary about making the Chelsea defender decision based on wanting a transfer in two weeks. Things change. I'd go for baines as your luxury defender, plus Chelsea's fixtures are not great over the next few weeks. Gervinho a good call... And do not change the front men.

Hiya, Yep happy with it so far. May swap Tevez in a week or two depending on what happens when Aguero is back and fit.

Everton had conceded at home in the last one
      Swansea have been free scoring
Benched both defenders in that game as I saw goals from both
Had I played Baines, I'd have benched Clyne
So lost two points ( even though it looks a very poor decision in hindsight)

Thanks Flynn, done it. Very interesting results... Ridgwell above McAuley by a long way despite both returning just clean sheets. Had a feeling Mark Noble would be propping up the top of the West Ham stats, despite never doing anything FPL wise. Confirms my suspicions that Baines will be almost essential this season, very high score and i imagine he's at the top most if not every week.
