The first midlands derby of the season finishes all square as Darren Bent climbs off the bench to clinch a point for Villa. Shane Long returns to the West Brom first XI to grab the opener as the Baggies sit sixth after six Gameweeks under Steve Clarke:

Shane Long
Having been dropped for the previous match against Reading, Long’s return to the West Brom first XI was something of a surprise given that his replacement last weekend, Romelu Lukaku, has notched the only goal of the game against the Royals. The Irishman vindicated Steve Clarke’s decision, though, by firing home the opener at Villa Park and with three home games (QPR, MCY, SOT) and a trip to Wigan in the next five, could continue to plunder the points if he gets the nod over the Belgian again. Indeed, Long has produced attacking returns in all of his home matches so far and despite Peter Odemwingie’s return from suspension, looks in the driving seat to continue – he has now started five of the Baggies six matches so far. Lukaku continues to be utilised as an impact; he has now climbed off the bench in five of the first six, a real frustration for Fantasy managers eying up the giant Belgian.

The West Brom Defence
Fantasy managers will be keenly awaiting any injury updates from the Hawthorns ahead of the aforementioned upcoming schedule. West Brom have produced clean sheets in all three of their home matches so far but yesterday saw Clarke’s first-choice full-backs, Liam Ridgewell and Steven Reid, miss out with calf and hamstring problems respectively. Gareth McAuley picked up a knock but stayed on the pitch as Clarke had made all three substitutions – while this suggests his problem can’t be too severe, the commentators admitted the centre-half was noticeably struggling. Elsewhere in the backline, Billy Jones – standing in for Reid at right-back – also picked up a problem and was subbed off on 46 minutes as the injuries at the back begin to rack up for the midlanders.

James Morrison
The Scot was rested for the midweek Capital One Cup defeat at home to Liverpool, having limped out of last week’s Reading match with a leg problem. Morrison returned to his role in “the hole” yesterday, tucking in behind Long in the Baggies 4-2-3-1 formation and, after a blank run over the previous three Gameweeks, returned to form by providing the assist for his side’s early strike. He’s now played a part in three of West Brom’s eight goals so far and priced at just 6.0 in FPL, continues to offer a decent mid-priced midfield differential as the season unfolds. With Chris Brunt succumbing to a hamstring problem once again yesterday, Morrison looks the obvious route into the Baggies midfield ahead of the above-mentioned run of fixtures.

Darren Bent
Paul Lambert sprung a major surprise with yesterday’s team sheet, as Bent dropped to the bench for the first time this season. The midweek display of Gabby Agbonlahor played a major part in the Villa manager’s thinking; having grabbed a double in the Capital One Cup win over City, the forward was handed a role alongside Christian Benteke up top. Bent had previously played every minute of Villa’s league campaign and had notched a goal and assist in the last two Gameweeks – climbing off the bench for Benteke with 23 minutes remaining, he saved the day for the hosts with a crucial equaliser. While both Benteke and Brett Holman (playing at the tip of a midfield diamond) offered plenty goal threat, Agbonlahor failed to register a single effort all game – Bent’s almost instant contribution will surely serve Lambert a reminder that he simply cannot afford to overlook his goal-getting abilities if the midlanders are to flourish this term.

Post-match, the Villa boss played down rumours of a rift between the pair. Bent has also recently been stripped of the club captaincy but Lambert denied the forward was upset at his omission from yesterday’s starting line-up:

“No, he was great. There was no problem. I just named the team and that’s the team I picked. I need everyone, it’s a collective thing, I never look at individuals. The goal was brilliant, it was a world-class finish. He was fine at full-time. I spoke to him in the dressing room as well. He was totally fine, totally, no problem, none. Everyone is as important as anyone else. I explained the captaincy thing was to do what he did there – to score. That’s the only reason I did it.”

Ciaran Clark
The Villa centre-half is proving to be a real FPL bonus magnet; a single point for yesterday’s assist means he has now produced six bonus in the last four Gameweeks. After a dire first couple of matches, Clark is beginning to look an intriguing cut-price prospect at the back – he has now averaged 5.5 points over the last four fixtures, with a goal and clean sheet also accrued. Looking at the upcoming schedule, though, it’s unlikely we’ll be targeting any of Lambert’s assets; aside from a home clash against Norwich in Gameweek 9, the midlanders are now facing a horrendous run which only begins to ease up from Gameweek 14 onwards.

I've said this a few times - he'll score bags of goals but there's so many other options that will score lots of goals too, for a lot cheaper. Some will say he's "essential", but given his price I very much disagree.

Cracking week for me went from 105k to 13k in rank. (Gloat over)

I did it by not knee jerking, not chasing last week's points and calmly doing a transfer when needed.

Just a few tips for those that bang people in and out at the drop or a hat.

Get people in for the long run and leave them to it 😉

How many have lost faith with rvp then?

Don't you think that could come back and bite somewhat? I would say that despite his points so far he is yet to start firing properly. And I hope that's just round the corner.

Ah yeah, at some point he'll definitely come back to bite but for what I can do with that extra cash, it doesn't seem worth it at the moment.

Last season he was in a team where he was involved in such a high proportion of their goals whereas this year, Man Utd have points scorers all over the pitch. There's also Rooney to consider, is RVP even nailed on to start? Based on the fact he was rested recently, I'd say not... for £13.5m I don't want to be worried about looking at the team sheet personally.

A lot are copying the top 10. But if you think about it, so many plays have hit big at the start of the season that it makes sense that non-RVP owners should be at the top. But RVP's value is in his consistency, and so i predict as the season wears on, those non-RVP owners will slowly start to slip.

It's always right. It's an ongoing steady stream of points. The people who had the short term explosive players over the 6 weeks are top. But we don't have enough FTs to hop from one to the next, predicting perfectly each time. RVP's solidarity is crucial.

Have stated my case a few times, but to cut to the chase. If you think RVP will score like last season, i.e. around 7.5-8 points per 90 played, then he is worth the outlay. If you think he will get less game time for whatever reason and thus probably score less points then last season, then he is not worth it.

Consistency is all fine and dandy, but till I see how he links up with Rooney and if rotation creeps in, ill stick with the Russian roulette of other captain options.

I do find it mildly amusing that a player who has scored or assisted in every start so far is causing this much cause for concern.

That said he's a massive outlay and you can see others firing for much cheaper.

TBH Tina, that would give me more comfort in keeping RVP. SAF would have no choice but to play him over the tough period.

I posted about losing my faith on Saturday night but after a sober (literally) reassessment of the United situation, I'm a believer again.

Just because I think Rooney will create more goals for the team as well as score some - if they play like they did in the second half against Spurs I'll be happy keeping RVP for now. Plus, Fletcher at the back may let them attack more. He's a better ball winner than Carrick/Scholes.

      I'm 100% keeping him.

He could (should) have scored 2 vs Spurs, and on another day would've done.

I thought RVP, Rooney and Kagawa looked awesome in tandem in the 2nd half on Saturday, and I doubt it went unnoticed by SAF.

Well lets talk Arsenal defense. As a unit they were still good IMO. Nice movement from the back 4. The new coach has done good. But guess what they've conceded twice from set piece. I blame AOX and Kos. Bottom line benching Mert was a mistake. I still believe they need him in order to be solid defensive unit again. Kos can be used only against quick forwards ala Defoe. Other than that he is useless IMO. Maybe I exaggerate but I see Mert experience in the Bundes Liga and especially for the national side to valuable.

So in conclusion, Wenger do your math and continue starting Mert I want 5, Arsenal defender for me team.
    Period.

Agree about Arsenal defence not suddenly becoming bad in one game. They did get caught high up the pitch a lot in the Chelsea game, especially the fullbacks, but they had a lack of defensive cover from midfield which actually is a long running Arsenal problem. This is no surprise given that Diaby limped out of the game so early.

I really do rate Kos. He has not had enough playing time yet to really get sharp, whereas Mertesacker has. Kos is a great last defender IMO, though so is Mertesacker. It's a good dilemma to have.

Verm gets forward too much from a defensive point of view and commits to tackles too early.

Basically, Kos & Mertesacker = good deep defence
Kos & Verm = one deep, one forward, can be a useful combination
Kos after little match practice & Verm = problematic

It's the same problem which Arsenal had last season. When they start messing up their back 4, they leak goals. Had they played less than half of 17 different back 4 combinations last season, they'd have been amongst the top 2 defences in the league.

Latest draft of the WC squad (you actually have to pick kinda early if you want to avoid price rises...)

    Foster, Begovic
    Baines, ACole, Gibbs, Demel, Clyne
    Silva, Cazorla, Mata, Bale, Michu
    Fletcher, Crouch, Lambert

Obviously I'm a little concerned about how light it is up front, but so far each of their stats seem as good as the upper-end of the mid priced range. Ba has tough fixtures coming, Berbatov is still injured (though I'll be keeping a close monitor of both)

Midfield in particular and defence seem stacked.

Cole's there because he seems the most nailed on of what has looked like a solid Chelsea backline so far. Terry suspension, Azpilcueta on the bench, only Bertrand to challenge for minutes at left back, and £0.5m cheaper than Ivanovic - seems to offer the most upside of the lot.

Mata is a similar story. I currently have Hazard but it seems like Mata is going to flourish as part of that three. And if not flourish then at least keep close to pace and at £8.8m vs £10.3m I'd say Mata is probably a little underpriced and Hazard a little overpriced, so there's potential value there.

For the points on the bench with no teams being doubled on in the front 8 there's always one who was a bad fixture making the decision pretty easy (and if all else is even, I'm happy to bench Crouch for Stoke away games).
