After Saturday’s eight fixtures provided us with goals aplenty, yesterday’s final two matches of Gameweek 8 proved something of a let-down from a Fantasy perspective. Two own goals, two red cards and no clean sheets – for many, it was a Sunday to forget…

Newcastle Hold Firm
It’s not been the easiest of starts for Newcastle in terms of injuries. Not once has Alan Pardew had the chance to roll out his first-choice XI this term but with Tim Krul, Fabricio Coloccini and Danny Simpson all returning yesterday, and Steven Taylor emerging from the bench late on to continue his recovery, their backline is looking solid ahead of a strong run of fixtures. Mike Williamson was impressive alongside Coloccini in yesterday’s rearguard action and it will be interesting to see if Taylor earns an immediate recall against West Brom in Gameweek 9. That match is the start of a favourable run for the Magpies (WBA, WHM, SWA) over the next four and while the ball-winning abilities of Cheick Tiote will be sorely missed in midfield, Pardew has the similarly tenacious Vurnon Anita as an option alongside Yohan Cabaye in the centre of the park.

Ba Remains Pivotal
An own goal took the shine off his performance but there’s no denying Ba’s importance to Newcastle’s attacking forays. Having supplied the assist for Cabaye’s opener, he has now had a hand in seven of his side’s nine goals so far this season – indeed, Ba has either scored or assisted all of the Magpies’ goals from Gameweek 4 onwards. With Papiss Cisse dropped to the bench for derby day favourite Shola Ameobi, Ba looks the one definite starter up front for Pardew and could well be set to plunder the points over that above-mentioned schedule.

Toothless Black Cats
Martin O’Neill’s side may have only tasted defeat once but their problems up front show little sign of abating. After seven matches, no Sunderland player aside from Steven Fletcher has found the net, with Ba’s unfortunate own goal earning the hosts a draw yesterday. It left O’Neill to bemoan a lack of creativity in his post-match comments…

“Our creative players are just finding it a bit tough at this minute…We just need them to get back to what they’re capable of doing. I’m hoping we can rectify that in the next few weeks.”

As this report reveals, no side in the top five leagues in Europe has recorded fewer goalscoring opportunities than the Black Cats. In terms of FPL points, Fletcher has the same total as Seb Larsson and James McClean combined (43), while Stephane Sessegnon has contributed no more than two bonus points so far – it’s a huge concern for the Wearsiders ahead of a schedule that sees them face three away trips in the next four (stk, eve, ful).

Everton’s Midfield Options Diminish
Over 200,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers shipped out Marouane Fellaini ahead of yesterday’s game at Loftus Road, with Steven Pienaar picking up 74,000 transfers in as an Everton midfield alternative but the South African is now sidelined for next week’s Merseyside derby after being dismissed for two yellow card offences. With Fellaini still uncertain of a comeback for the Liverpool match, it leaves David Moyes with a real quandary ahead of next weekend. Thomas Hitzlsperger could come into the reckoning on the left of midfield in Pienaar’s enforced absence, while Victor Anichebe could continue in the support role if Fellaini is indeed ruled out.

Post-match, Moyes revealed that, while he is far from happy with the Pienaar decision, he accepts the South African will now miss out next weekend…

“(It was) A rubbish decision by the referee. He had a poor game all day.I’m really disappointed with it (the sending off) because it probably ruined our chances of going on and trying to get three points. And in the end we had to fight very hard to make sure we got one. We will have to see how we cope with players out through injury or suspension. I thought we coped quite well without Marouane Fellaini, Darron Gibson and Tony Hibbert. So we have to try and get some of these players back and fit now because obviously we’re going to lose Steven Pienaar for our next game. I don’t talk too much about players who aren’t available so we move on.”

The FA have confirmed to us this morning that Everton are not in a position to appeal the decision…

“Clubs cannot appeal against sendings off for Persistent Misconduct offences.”

Toffees Short on Cleanies
Once again, the Everton back line failed to keep a clean sheet – they have now kept out their opponents just once in the last seven Gameweeks. With four home games in the next six (LIV, SUN, NOR, ARS), though, in addition to trips to Fulham and Reading, the fixture list continues to smile kindly on Moyes’ men, affording Leighton Baines and co further opportunity to produce the points as Moyes looks to keep his side in the top four.

Rangers Rotation
Despite a home point, Mark Hughes’ side remain rooted to the bottom of the table. Once again, Hughes’ tinkering is making QPR virtually impossible to consider for Fantasy investment. Yesterday saw two changes to the back-four that started at West Brom last time round – Stephane Mbia replaced Anton Ferdinand at centre-half, while Armand Traore came in for Clint Hill at left-back. Shaun Wright-Phillips dropped to the bench, Samba Diakite was afforded a chance in the centre of a four-man midfield, while Ji-Sung Park moving to the right flank. Junior Hoilett – handed the role in “the hole” behind Bobby Zamora – grabbed a goal in his first start since Gameweek 5 but, just eight matches into the season, only four players have started more than five matches – it’s little wonder the London outfit are struggling for consistency.

    I see a lot of people are doing Suarez to Ba. This was my planned move aswell, but looking at it again, is Ba really the better pick over the next 2? Seems like it could be a wasted transfer.

      Thinking exactly same, two tough games for Ba. Thats what made me think about Defoe, but with Ade pressing to start it might not be the smartest move. Might be worth keeping, the only other option for me is Crouch, Im not sure I can bring myself to have three stoke players. Even bring Tevez back. What are you thinking hold tight?

        I have no idea at the moment. Ba looks good good longterm. Just not sure if it's worth holding off for two weeks. If Tevez doesn't start against Ajax, he could be an option and captain material.

    Is Guthrie to Sterling a must with .8 in the bank? Want to get Bale next week, will have to take a -4 to do that if I get Sterling but want Sterling.

          Like I said last week, Kolarov scores in one game, what somebody else would do over 2/3/4 games, so it isn't necessarily madness to own him.

          He will probably score a hatrick in the Swansea game, so you can jibe back at me then!

    Not sure what to do with this lot. 2FTs:

    Foster Federici
    Baines Ivanovic Hangeland Cuellar McCartney
    Cazorla Yaya Michu Nolan Guthrie
    RVP Tevez Lambert
    1.0 in the bank, 2 FTs.

    Federici should probably go as I don't want to play Foster this week. McCarthy or Begovic?
    Yaya - Mata? But Yaya is home to Swansea this week and Mata's fixtures aren't great.
    Guthrie - Sterling?
    Lambert - Crouch?
    Yaya, Tevez -> Bale, Ba? Leaves me no City cover.

          Sounds like both things happened, not sure how we can be certain what resulted in the penalty.

          Just glanced over a few match reports and they all seem to suggest it was given for handball but that's hardly definitive.

    After a great start, my season is now in free-fall. Although Fellaini > Sterling hit saved this gameweek from total ruin, I do need to stop the silly point hits. But beyond that I do wonder what's so bad about my team that ignoring the hits, they just aren't bringing in the points. Just about everyone in my team is on the scouts' watchlist and looks decent on paper. Bah.

                  Cheers mate. Yeah, Jenks is on red-alert. The plan was always Sagna but Arsenal's defence seems oddly dysfunctional now. Considering Wilson and/or Simpson.

                    I'm looking at both of those as well.... Currently on Wilson and doubling up as not sure Simpson is nailed on and Newc. defence is more rocky (although very attractive)

        I do know. Just getting frustrated waiting for it to happen, and noticing that my biggest successes have come from luck (Michu from the start, Berbs early) and the transfers based on 'underlying stats' have practically all flopped.

        Maybe some lunch will shore up my resolve ... 🙂

    got 2 FT and 0 in the bank

    Which option would you pick
    A. ACole -> Wilson, Fletcher -> Ba
    B. Fletcher -> Crouch, Guthrie -> Sterline
    C. Hazard -> Bale, Barnett -> Wilson
    D. Fletcher -> Crouch, Barnett -> 4.5 def

    Begovic Juss
    Clyne ACole Baines Barnett Hughes
    Cazorla Hazard Noble Guthrie Michu
    Rvp Tevez Fletcher

      B or D. The others are more sideways. B offers you more with Sterling and Crouch fixtures are good. D does the Crouch bit but gets rid of your non-playing defender.

      Your choice but B seems better as you can focus on Barnett in the next couple of GWs.

    Already made one transfer, i brought in Wilson for Zabeleta. I have one more FT and i was thinking to bring in Rooney. I havent had RVP all season and i have kind of gotten away with it.....SO FAR (im top 3 in my ML's). now though i think i need united cover and want to get rooney. what striker would you transfer out or should save the transfer?

    Jussi
    Riise / Wilson / Rafa
    Santi / HBA / Michu / Nolan
    Berba / Tevez / Podolski

    Subs - Vorm / Demel / Clyne / Pienaar

    Thanks for the advice. need the help as i have reason to keep all 3 strikers

    i can either upgrade michu to bale, or upgrade podolski to rooney. i think rooney is the right move since michu is involved in almost every swansea goal, and rooney showed that he is capable of scoring even in his new position behind the striker. thoughts?
    also if i were to get rooney, would it be worth -4 points to get him in next game week (not this one because im not trading out podolski against qpr)

            Ramirez won't be fit for this weekend, thinking Ramirez -> Lallana.

            Up front I've got Aguero who if he plays mid week will be rested against Swansea probably, Fletcher away at Stoke who doesn't look like he'll do anything and Pienaar who is suspended. Definitely need to take a 4 point hit but not sure where the priorities are.

      Tricky, both capable of returning the odd CS, but Fulham are liable to the occasional spanking, whereby Sunderland are generally tight even when losing.

      Curiously I have no ManU coverage in any fantasy league... I prob should rectify that, just seems good value in other teams, and too much rotation in their attacking options??

    I know it's early, but I've done my FTs already.

    Team look ok for the weekend? Banking on Kaca starting.

    Could still wildcard. I want to bring in Begovic, Hughes, Sterling.

    Thoughts please. Is patience the key? Still not gotten a green arrow this season yet!

    Jaaskelainen
    Baines - Hangeland - Cuellar
    Bale - Michu - Kacaniklic - Cazorla
    Berbatov - Van Persie - Ba (c)

    Federici - Pienaar - Rangel - Fabio

      Yeah got Ivanovic too. Tempted to sell but he's getting forward so much.

      Don't think you should sell Cazorla before QPR, even for Bale.

        I'd wait, so much can happen between now and deadline. Unless you really can't afford it. For the first GW ever I did my transfers the last hour or so before deadline, it was a great feeling!

      Mata.

      I think it will be close but Mata looks more likely to score from open play etc...., and price seals the deal too.

    So, I've got 2FTs - what to do with them?

    My team's here: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/43360/history/

    Options are:

    Michu and Suarez -> Mata and Berbatov/Fletcher

    Kaca and Suarez -> Osman/Nolan and Berbatov/Fletcher

    Vertonghen, Kaca and Suarez -> Hughes, Mata and Berbatov (-4)/ or do over two weeks

    Any thoughts or other suggestions welcomed!

    Done Pienaar to HBA, have another freebie, where to invest or should I save?

    Begovic/Jusii

    Davies-Rafael-Cole-Demel-Gorkss

    Oscar-HBA-Cazorla-Sterling-Puncheon

    Aguero-RVP-Torres

    downgrade Torres and upgrade mid and defense ? although he does seem to be getting into good positions, he's bound to have a good week or 2 right?
