West Ham take a slender lead into the Carling Cup semi-final second leg in a fortnight, courtesy of a Ben Foster blunder that allowed Carlton Cole to hand the 10-man Hammers an advantage and Avram Grant some breathing space. Here’s the notes on last night’s events…

The urgency of West Ham’s pursuit of a loan deal for Wayne Bridge was emphasised by the fact that Matt Upson was started the game as an emergency left-back. Winston Reid came into the centre of the defence to partner James Tomkins. The Bridge deal could be finalised today and will be a welcome addition at Upton Park – his Fantasy credentials remain limited however.

Mark Noble and Scott Parker were a force in midfield as the Hammers dominated the first period. This pairing carry the hopes of survival and both will need to maintain form and chip in with goals if West Ham are to maintain their status. Parker in particular, could be a strong magnet for Bonus points over the remainder of the season.

Jonathan Spector was handed a midfield role once again and played his part in both goals. Spector is classed as a 4.1 defender in the Fantasy Premier League game and could come into consideration if he can maintain a midfield start.

Victor Obinna’s petulant kick out at Seb Larsson will see him miss two league matches against Arsenal and Everton, plus the second-leg at St Andrews. His absence will likely see Carlton Cole restored to the starting lineup against the Gunners, although Grant has other options with Luis Boa-Morte, Zavon Hines and Junior Stanislas also in the reckoning.

Scott Dann owners face an anxious wait after he was stretchered from the field with a hamstring injury to be replaced by David Murphy. Alex McLeish had this to say on the situation…

“Scott has a hamstring injury, and it looks like a tear. It’s a blow because he’s another player who has been in fine form…Our medical team will continue to assess him and we’ll have a clearer picture in the next 48 hours.”

Dann is obviously a major doubt for local derby with Villa this weekend and could face several weeks on the sidelines. Liam Ridgewell and Roger Johnson could both see increased interest over the next week or so then as Fantasy Managers consider Brum defenders ahead of their potential treble fixture in Gameweek 27.

Talking of which, despite Foster’s dreadful error for Carlton Cole’s winning goal, Birmingham will remain confident of turning the tie around at St Andrews. Should they win passage to the final, their recently rescheduled league fixture at Everton would be shifted to March 9 and dropped into Gameweek 29 which would leave them with a double here and give them with just the two fixtures in Gameweek 27.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

A week is long time in FF. After the first lot of games everyone was laughing at those with Torres as captain, especially those who had captained Gerrard or Adam. Then Gerrard got sent off and everyone starting laughing at people who captained Gerrard, especially those who had captained Adam. Now, it looks like Adam won't be playing tonight so those who captained Torres may well have the last laugh!!

He looks like he is on his way out of the club - can't see them risking him getting injured as its a lot of money for Blackpool. Might even be gone before then. Hope I'm wrong as I am one of the many who have him cpt.

Villa and Brum's offers have been turned down. Under those circumstances Blackpool would be mad to show that they are ready to fold easily by leaving him out of the team. They need to show he is valuable to them.

I personally think he wont play either (I have him as Captain), as Usually in this sort of situation the manager leaves the player out due to personal reasons..i.e. his head being turned and not being in the right frame of mid!!
Anyway fingers crossed he plays (and scores)!

A bit hard to have it carrying on for weeks on a website, don't you think? THEN people will really think you are stupid.

When Kroky began his post by writing "BREAKING NEWS!!!!", wasn't it pretty obvious there already that it was a windup? I thought it was funny since I found the "news-breaking" utterly absurd.

        I agree.

If I were to come up with a perfect frontline it would have to have

Carroll (when fit) even with his price rise he is still a bargain

Tevez - frustrating, but I've never seen him not give everything, penalties and capable of some seriously high scores

the third spot is up for debate - but a fit Rooney as Man Utd come into the usual better second half o the season would be my preference.

you don't need Defoe if you have VDV. Campbell is fine because he'll be on the bench basically every week, but the other two strikers are going to be playing all the time and need to be a little better, probably Dzeko or Tevez as you don't have any City players. RVP is a definite option, not sure on him myself but he could very well come good.

I think City's forwards are under too much threat of rotation and Tevez doesn't want to be there; have him atm but want to get him out.

Ditch Tevez at your peril. He may not want to be there but I've yet to see any evidence of slacking form. He can get the odd 2pt game - but its not for want of trying. I can't think of a better, more consistent striker.

Also Mancini has said he wants to be more attacking with Dzeko and others in the line up, that means greater chance of assists as well as goals. I actually can't believe that Tevez is set to leave your team. He'd have to be dead/pregnant/possessed by a paraplegic ghost to leave my team.

The voice of reason....Dzeko may or may not hit the ground running, and even if he does Tevez could benefit from City having more attacking outlets.

They should get him to sign a new contract with the promise of letting him go at the end of the season so they can benefit from his play to keep them up, the sell him for more in the summer.

Adam can walk out for free if a tribunal says that Blackpool broke the contract over his bonus for getting them up that is why they might cash in. Holloway must play Adam as long as he is a Blackpool player.

Cheers for that. Even more reason Holloway will play Adam then. Still 18 months left on contract so if Adam does not sign a new ccontract they may still cash in as there is some blood bad between the owners and Adam now over that contract bonus.

        - It was feared the disagreement could result in Adam's departure from Bloomfield Road under a breach of contract, but the former Rangers man is adamant the matter is now settled.

"We had an agreement in the contract and that's what it is. It's finished now," said Adam, who turns 25 on Friday.

"At the end of the day, I want to play football. The decision has been made and I'll move on. The past is the past and I want to look to the future."

    Begovic
    Coleman Kolarov Vidic
    Adam Bale Nani Brunt N'Zogbia
    Torres Tevez(C)

    Foster Carroll Evatt Konchesky

I have 1 free transfer to use, but i'm looking at saving it for GW24 and having 2 free transfers to do Brunt > Fabregas and Konchesky > Djourou. Opinions?

Exactly. I'm about 40 or so points behind in the mini-league so it's worth a shot in my opinion.

If I was 40 points in front, I'd keep Tevez as he's the safe option. Dzeko is a gamble. Could pay off, could back fire. We shall see.

I personally am giving him a one-week punt because I'm playing my wildcard and I'm not certain which Man Utd striker to go for for the BIR/blp double header.

So Dzeko gets a week, then I'll choose which of Berbs, Rooney and Hernandez I fancy for the double game week.

I think part of it is because FPL players are often striving to be right about something first. It feels good.

It's similar to the fact that many players would rather get 10 points from a captain that most opponents don't have than 12 from a common choice.

              major bummer Jonty,

just an idea-print up 500 business cards, cost u nothing, and start handing them out round town with his picture on them and your number and a 20 quid reward written on it- KIDS are the people you want on this, with mobiles. if u go into a printers, theyll whip em up for you in no time, and get them out there to every kid in the town.

Maybe make it 50, cos kids have a lot of money these days- as the instructor at the krusty clown college tood us 🙂

              seriously though man, do it!!

that;s good advice. There's a pretty good community spirit around here though so haven;t done the reward thing yet, but have given out 100s of posters and little flyers with my number on it. I may go down the reward route soon tho.

Ok ok ok, behold the ultimate pre-GW 27 wildcard team

    Foster -- Begovic
    Vidic -- Coleman -- R Johnson -- Djourou -- Foley
    Fabregas -- VDV -- Nani -- Brunt -- Adam
    Tevez -- Berbatov -- Carroll

This gives me exactly 11 DGW players (and 2 triple GWs) for GW 27 and a good base of Vidic/Nani for doubles in the following GW.

    Any changes?

Sorry for this, but any input would be appreciated:

    Stockdale - Foster

    K.Toure - Hughes - Djourou - Rafael - Gohouri

    Fabregas - Dempsey - Nani - Nasri - VDV

    Carroll - Tevez - Rodallega

My real doubts are with Dempsey, rodallega, and Gohouri, the rest i feel pretty confident with. Anyway, any input much appreciated, thanks.

Well what a game last night. Cracking atmosphere. Frederic Piquionne should never wear a West Ham shirt again, he is a terrible, terrible, terrible footballer. Carlton Cole made such a difference when he came on, not just the goal (Which he meant by the way, just like the dummy Vs Wolves). Mark Noble put in an excellent shift, and Victor Obinna was our best player until he got sent off, just seen it for the first time, stupid tw*t. Julien Faubert at right back is very underrated in our team. And for the Birmingham treble Gameweek i did some scouting.

Seb Larsson - He had the running on Matthew Upson all game, and was a lil maestro on the set pieces. Whenever he is on the pitch he will hog them for sure. Murphy (The left back that replaced Dann,) took one while he was on, so if Dann is out for a long time then he is one to watch, poor free kick mind. And some other player took one after Larsson went of, also poor. So he will hog set pieces. He is in my team for the Treble GW for sure.

Ben Foster - Ignore the fact he got done over by a brilliant finish from Carlton Cole, and he had a decent game, once again. He is a cracking goalie. Couldn't do nothing for the first one. And the only time Birmingham really looked like scoring to me was from a set piece. Or.....

Alexander Hleb - Plays with his socks down and cuffs of his shirt over his hands, srawny lil rat. But looked a threat when running at us, and was instrumental in there play. He and Larsson seemed to be the only ones with ideas. (Larsson more than Hleb). And anything good came through them two.

Nikola Zigic - Jerome did sweet FA last night, and had Zigic been playing the entire game, it would of been a different scoreline for sure. Ok, he played against Winston Reid and James Tomkins (Who didn't deserve MOTM, Reid deserved it). But he looked a HUGE threat for the small amount of time he was on the pitch. If he begins to get a regular starting place, definitely one to watch.

And as for West Ham. Obinna is our main threat and shoots on site. I personally will refuse to get Piquionne in my team now, but he will get points annoyingly, as will C.Cole. If Faubert was listed as a Defender he would be worth getting in if/when we get some nice fixtures. Don't bother with the rest.

Anyways, I am over moon with the result. Bit annoying, at 1-0 during the first half I would've said what a poor result. But with Obinna being stupid and Brum having the momentum, we looked like we would concede 2 or 3 more. I would of happily took 1-1 at that point. Now for the away leg, Come on you IRONS!!!!!
