West Ham take a slender lead into the Carling Cup semi-final second leg in a fortnight, courtesy of a Ben Foster blunder that allowed Carlton Cole to hand the 10-man Hammers an advantage and Avram Grant some breathing space. Here’s the notes on last night’s events…

The urgency of West Ham’s pursuit of a loan deal for Wayne Bridge was emphasised by the fact that Matt Upson was started the game as an emergency left-back. Winston Reid came into the centre of the defence to partner James Tomkins. The Bridge deal could be finalised today and will be a welcome addition at Upton Park – his Fantasy credentials remain limited however.

Mark Noble and Scott Parker were a force in midfield as the Hammers dominated the first period. This pairing carry the hopes of survival and both will need to maintain form and chip in with goals if West Ham are to maintain their status. Parker in particular, could be a strong magnet for Bonus points over the remainder of the season.

Jonathan Spector was handed a midfield role once again and played his part in both goals. Spector is classed as a 4.1 defender in the Fantasy Premier League game and could come into consideration if he can maintain a midfield start.

Victor Obinna’s petulant kick out at Seb Larsson will see him miss two league matches against Arsenal and Everton, plus the second-leg at St Andrews. His absence will likely see Carlton Cole restored to the starting lineup against the Gunners, although Grant has other options with Luis Boa-Morte, Zavon Hines and Junior Stanislas also in the reckoning.

Scott Dann owners face an anxious wait after he was stretchered from the field with a hamstring injury to be replaced by David Murphy. Alex McLeish had this to say on the situation…

“Scott has a hamstring injury, and it looks like a tear. It’s a blow because he’s another player who has been in fine form…Our medical team will continue to assess him and we’ll have a clearer picture in the next 48 hours.”

Dann is obviously a major doubt for local derby with Villa this weekend and could face several weeks on the sidelines. Liam Ridgewell and Roger Johnson could both see increased interest over the next week or so then as Fantasy Managers consider Brum defenders ahead of their potential treble fixture in Gameweek 27.

Talking of which, despite Foster’s dreadful error for Carlton Cole’s winning goal, Birmingham will remain confident of turning the tie around at St Andrews. Should they win passage to the final, their recently rescheduled league fixture at Everton would be shifted to March 9 and dropped into Gameweek 29 which would leave them with a double here and give them with just the two fixtures in Gameweek 27.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Guys, please rate my WC Team.
    Hart - Al-Habsi,
    Rafael - Coleman - Toure - Djourou - Alcarez,
    Nani - VDV - Cesc - Brunt - Nzogbia,
    RVP - Dzeko - Rodallega

Wigan players are in temp for DGW, Will swop RVP for Defoe at some stage...

How do you have 4 Wigan players? Also the midfield is strong, but your forwards are pretty risky. Other than that it looks good.

LOL no no, I took Al-Habsi out for Gordon I mean. I'm just using Alcarez for GW 24, then to Pantsil or Hangeland I reckon. Dont trust Wolves...

Not keen on your strikers actually.

With a Utd dgw coming up why are you assing about with an untried Man City striker and an injury prone Van Persie?

Most scout readers will have Adam instead of Brunt as he is a more reliable source of points.

And unless you really believe Dzeko, in 1 game, wil outscore Berbatov or Rooney in 2 then get one of the Man Utd strikers and worry about Dzeko after GW24.

And most scouts on here will tell you to leave Defoe well alone and for a very good reason.

So, with Dann and Wingie now doubts (and both pencilled in for my WC this week), any suggestions for alternatives of the same value?

    I'm looking at

    a) Rodellaga and Pantsil or
    b) DJ Campbell and R Johnson

    Help!!

      B) for sure. Rodallega has no real form, and Johnson is a better chioce than Pantsill.
      Can you not get Ridgewell??

Holloway playing Adam all through that bonus saga showed that he wasn't willing to bring off field issues into consideration for his team selection and i fully expect that to be the case tonight. I'm pretty sure Adam will play.

Gonna be annoyed if he does end up moving though, no idea as to whether he'll be anywhere near as effetive at a different club, and i don't really fancy DJ at blackpool without him there.

GJ can play in midfield though, that is fine with me. His wife better not be a selfish one and start poppin his sprog out any time today.

liverpool had a very tiring game three days ago v united.

Gerard, their best player, is out.

The whole team is pretty well shlte.

Both these teams are level on points, and one is at home.

Torres couldnt kick snow off a rope of late

    Blackpool score goals.

    DJ campbell is my captain.

For all these reasons, im finding it EXTREMELY difficult not to put 20 quid on either the Draw no bet tonight for Blackpool at 2/1, or Blackpool outright, at 3.2/1.

thats what im thinking Soop- they have to (well, probably will) go for the win. Blackpool have been done at home this season by teams that have come set to defend. Hopefully, Liverpool will try play ball, in which case at least we'll see goals, and hopefully more for blackpool, and mainly DJ

I dislike people justifying risky moves because they "need to chase a lead." FPL isn't one of those types of games. You're not dependent on an opponent at all. It doesn't matter if you're chasing a lead or defending one, if you think that a player in a given situation will get you more points than another, then go for it.

If it's the safe option, then so be it. No teams are exactly alike, and what one person may think has more point scoring potential, another might disagree. If you play the game, just play it to score as many points as you can and not worry about your opponents, you'll do just fine. Heck, you're at a big advantage since you're on this site and everyone throws around ideas for high potential point scorers. Don't take unnecessary risks because you think you have to. There are still a lot of gameweeks left...

I would get Simpson in from Newcastle for £3.9m. Gives you more money to upgrade Rafael to Vidic/Evra or use the dosh further upfield.

Have you ever been tempted to get as many players from 1 club as possible?

It is possible, if you have 7 players. 3 from Man City, and the other 4 are transferred to Man City then you will have 7 Man City players.

It's definitely possible, but the players would need to come from other FPL teams. Once outsiders are brought in (like Dzeko), you'd have to wait until they were added to FPL before buying them. Then the game would make sure that you were down to the proper quota of players before getting Dzeko in.

        transfers: facepalm etc etc etc.

for instance, you could have started with 3 liverpool players, then bought Konchesky and Cole to make 5.

If you stuck with it until now, given that they might transfer Adam, you could end up with at least 6.

          Whatttt??

example above with cole and konchesky joining livpool, if you had torres (lpool) cole (chelsea) konch (fulham) Gerrard (lpool) Johnson (lpool) then after the transfer window you'd have 5 lpool.

on the first day of the season you would get points for all 5 ( mayb cole was a bad example )

Yeah, definitely. I'd like to see Liverpool relegated, but poor old Roy has my sympathy.

He was doing a cracking job at Fulham, and left for the bright lights of Liverpool. Was supposed to be a move up, but now look.

Luckily I think at least managers aren't judged by their last season, so he'll be alright, but it wasn't fair on him and he must be upset.

I think it would be better for him to go to a club he can build from the ground up, and somewhere he can actually exceed expectations.

Huh, no kidding ... well then, Cheers Riot/Goose ... you may have just saved a life 😉

    Please rate my WC team:

    Hart (Al-Habsi)
Baines / Coleman / Huth (Bardsley / Rafael)
    Nani / Nasri / VdV / N'Zog / Fabs
    Carroll / Tevez (Elmander)

    Any thought would be appreciated!
