634x258 The Stock Check

A Hugo Rodallega header earns Martin Jol’s side the points and condemns Newcastle to their fifth defeat in six games. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday night’s events…

On the Up

Damien Duff
A brace of assists took the reliable winger to five for the season and made Duff Fulham’s leading Fantasy Premier League points scorer. Duff has been rotated in and out of Martin Jol’s lineup of late but demonstrated his worth and even hinted that, if the Cottagers can get back to goalscoring ways long term, he could present an option, particularly from Gameweeks 19-22 when Fulham face three favourable home fixtures in four.

Steve Sidwell
Another unsung hero in the Fulham ranks, Sidwell was a tireless performer and capped his display with a fourth goal of the season: a strong return for a 5.1 FPL midfielder. Having started the last six, his place seems secure and, like Duff, he could well present a differential for Fulham’s kind schedule from Boxing Day onwards.

Hatem Ben Arfa
The mercurial Frenchman made his return to the Newcastle lineup and reminded of his talents with an equalising goal: his first strike in the league since Gameweek 3. Investment in Ben Arfa looks unlikely given Newcastle’s evil schedule but he’ll be a player expected to enjoy an upturn in 2013 and could yet come into the equation before the season ends.

Going Down

Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian oozed class and was central to Fulham’s attacking ploys throughout; he also had opportunities to notch but the fact remains that Berbatov has now blanked in his last five league outings. With no goal, assist or bonus coming his way since his superb Gameweek 11 performance at the Emirates, it seems likely we’ll see continued sales. His price has dropped from 7.6 to 7.4 in the past two Gameweeks and the fidgeting and steady decline in ownership is likely to continue. Those that hold will be looking beyond the next two away matches and hoping for a change in fortune and, more significantly, a speedy return for Bryan Ruiz as Berbatov’s foil.

The Newcastle Defence
Despite the return of Fabricio Coloccini, Alan Pardew’s back four continued to leak goals: their only clean sheet in the last eleven matches has come against a Wigan side with 10-men for the majority of the match. Away from home, the Magpies have conceded twice in their last three trips. With Man City, United and Arsenal in their next four fixtures, it seems most unlikely that we’ll see an immediate turnaround in fortune.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

And he won't be rotated around the busy xmas period. He's also playing so well despite not scoring in 5 games. He plays well every game and Fulham create chances. Very unlucky not to score tonight

I think RvP at home to Sunderland is a better option though.

            RvP (c) Berba (vc)

That being said, given my record with vcs this year maybe I should captain Berba

RvP is the only choice this weekend, not even considering Suarez (cue a hat-trick from the racist).

I'm in the same boat with decent VC picks, poor C picks.

I might regret it but I've decided to take a 4 point hit and get in Rooney. My forward line is just mouth-watering now though! Plus I'm predicting a big scoreline v Sunderland.

    Begovic

    Demel – Shawcross – Rafael - Baines

    Michu – Fellaini – Sterling

    RVP (C) – Suarez – Rooney (VC)

I have enough in the bank to get Rooney in for Berbs and have that forward line.

Saying a player hasn't scored FPL points in 5 games isn't always a reason to instantly sell. It's a reason why it hasn't been beneficial to own somebody for the last 5 weeks, that's all. Any people who regularly visit this site know that stats mean a lot. You don't just buy Sidwell because he scored a fluky goal tonight. If there's one player you would buy after watching this game tonight it's Berbatov. If this was the first game of the season you would see him as someone worth picking up because of the strength of his performance and the underlying stats. It would be impossible to ignore that.

There's some dude on here who does explosion imminent tables, Berbatov after tonight would be very high on that table.

Fair enough if you sell Berbatov because of the price falls but two reasons to keep him that spring to mind are:

    a) he's now more of a differential
    b) there's few whose potential matches his at that price

I agree but the Stock Check isn't an in depth article which discusses such information - it's a quick assessment of whether a player's stock has improved or declined as a result of a match outcome. The Scout Notes go into more detail and discuss the points you've made (and some of the points I've alluded to above). I also think that Berbatov will likely hold around fourth spot in the Watchlist, despite his form - only RVP, Suarez and Defoe likely above him...

Just to say, this wasn't actually directed at your stock check article. More at posters saying 'but he hasn't scored in 5 gameweeks' hysterically as if it's automatically a reason to sell. If you are concerned by the price falls then go ahead but if Berbatov is 'off form' I don't buy it. Tonight he was immense and most certainly on form. His threat was unmatched tonight out of all attacking players in my opinion in terms of creativity and attacking influence.

Most FPL players don't give a toss about performances. Rightly or wrongly they will sell him in their droves. It's up to the clever cloggs on here to keep faith and punish the doubters.

Won't be selling Berb yet, but this run is woeful. At least I know he'll play, paltry consolation.

Just did an analysis of RVP vs Rooney in the members area. I am not one to generally make a knee jerk decision. Some interesting results.

    *Stats removed by Admin*

Is RVP worth the additional funds?? If i sold him today i would get 13.4 vs Rooney cost @ 11.8. I find that i tend to “fall in love” with RVP and am obliged to give him the armband each week due his price. No surprise that there seems to be a direct correlation between my overall rank and RVP performances. (I have slid dramatically since his last haul 4800 overall to 50,000) Another reason for conducting my analysis is that with the forthcoming xmas program, RVP is due a rest and I feel Rooney is nailed on to start every match as per SAF’s comments the other day.

Sorry for the long post but I feel that it is worth the discussion.

      Sharing Member stats! Haw 😛

This move could be genius or not. Van Persie is still scoring consistently. This could probably just be a burst of form for Rooney till he subsides again. Wouldnt make the transfer unless I really needed the cash or Van Persie's form dipped considerably.

From those stats, RVP has more shots in the box, more goal attempts overall and more touches in the box. In terms of goal threat, those are key. He has been unlucky the last 2 games not to get similar returns to Rooney.

At this stage, it seems pointless wasting a transfer to take RVP out for Rooney, it's definitely something to consider during the January WC though. Looks like Rooney has pens aswell.
