634x258 The Stock Check

A Hugo Rodallega header earns Martin Jol’s side the points and condemns Newcastle to their fifth defeat in six games. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday night’s events…

On the Up

Damien Duff
A brace of assists took the reliable winger to five for the season and made Duff Fulham’s leading Fantasy Premier League points scorer. Duff has been rotated in and out of Martin Jol’s lineup of late but demonstrated his worth and even hinted that, if the Cottagers can get back to goalscoring ways long term, he could present an option, particularly from Gameweeks 19-22 when Fulham face three favourable home fixtures in four.

Steve Sidwell
Another unsung hero in the Fulham ranks, Sidwell was a tireless performer and capped his display with a fourth goal of the season: a strong return for a 5.1 FPL midfielder. Having started the last six, his place seems secure and, like Duff, he could well present a differential for Fulham’s kind schedule from Boxing Day onwards.

Hatem Ben Arfa
The mercurial Frenchman made his return to the Newcastle lineup and reminded of his talents with an equalising goal: his first strike in the league since Gameweek 3. Investment in Ben Arfa looks unlikely given Newcastle’s evil schedule but he’ll be a player expected to enjoy an upturn in 2013 and could yet come into the equation before the season ends.

Going Down

Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian oozed class and was central to Fulham’s attacking ploys throughout; he also had opportunities to notch but the fact remains that Berbatov has now blanked in his last five league outings. With no goal, assist or bonus coming his way since his superb Gameweek 11 performance at the Emirates, it seems likely we’ll see continued sales. His price has dropped from 7.6 to 7.4 in the past two Gameweeks and the fidgeting and steady decline in ownership is likely to continue. Those that hold will be looking beyond the next two away matches and hoping for a change in fortune and, more significantly, a speedy return for Bryan Ruiz as Berbatov’s foil.

The Newcastle Defence
Despite the return of Fabricio Coloccini, Alan Pardew’s back four continued to leak goals: their only clean sheet in the last eleven matches has come against a Wigan side with 10-men for the majority of the match. Away from home, the Magpies have conceded twice in their last three trips. With Man City, United and Arsenal in their next four fixtures, it seems most unlikely that we’ll see an immediate turnaround in fortune.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

5 flagged players, 1 unavailable, would like to hear some thoughts

    Bego Jussi
    Enrique* Ridgewell* Cuellar Davies Hughes
    Silva Bale* Puncheon* Michu Fellaini
    RVP Fletcher* Giroud*

    1FT 3.9m ITB

I know I probably need to bring Suarez in, and I'm not afraid to take a hit. Would prefer keeping and risking Bale.

Was tempted by Fletcher to Suarez then Giroud to someone else. He was pretty woeful against Albion, and carrying a knock I doubt he'll start against Reading.

        To who is the question.

    Begovic Foster

    Enrique Shawcross Cameron Cuellar Garrido

    Silva Michu Fellaini Sterling Sessegnon

    RVP Suarez Berba.

1 FT 0.3 in the bank. Thinking Berba to Defoe and just bench Sessegnon at Utd.

Think I'd prefer to have Berb against qpr than Defoe against swans. Save xfer or consider replacement for Cameron. Bench Sess and save for Sou game if you want to play him then

Ruddy absence expected to be 3 months. He twitted that at the time of injury.
I like Sagna's price better plus he'd be worth once he acquires form. I suspect Wenger won't be taking more chances with Jenkinson after that very poor pass to GK which originated Michu's goal.

Quick one people, for the next 3 GWs best cheap 3rd striker slot; Holt or Long?

    Holt - WIG, west, CHE
    Long- HAM, NOR, qpr

I'd probably punt on Long if I had to choose one. Has better fixtures and Norwich seem to share their goals out more. But obviously Long is a big rotation threat, but 1st choice generally speaking.

Just going through the pro's and con's of deciding whether to sell Ba or Berbatov so I can get Suarez in.

    BA

    + Higher goal threat
    + Plays up front
    - No creativity
    - Bad Fixtures

    BERBATOV

    + Very creative
    + Good fixtures
    - Plays deep (Because no Ruiz)
    - Less goal threat

Basically its a CAM with good assist potential and good fixtures vs a striker with a high goal threat but bad fixtures.

Ba is a proven goal scorer, I have been wanting to switch to Berba for a couple of weeks but I am definitely waiting until Ruiz is back. Berba is class but even playing MCI, I would feel more comfortable having Ba. I am sticking.

I'd honestly go for Defoe. So what if you have Bale? Double-up while they have great fixtures (and Bales injured) and then sell him when the fixtures get harder or if his form dies.

Imagine where you'd be if you'd owned both so far this season. I can speak for myself and say I'd be much higher up the rankings thats for sure

Fair enough. It's nice doubling on your own team when they do well it's all the sweeter, but that works in reverse too I guess.

This barren Berba spell is a little worrying. Along with the Rooney/RVP dilemna and the unreliable Suaz, things are getting a little troublesome for our front three heros.

Thoughts? Ideal front 3 currently are:

    1.

    2.

    3.

Suarez is a season keeper for me. Even at his points rate last year, he sill could get 180p. This year he's improved more, he would get 200p.

A consequence of wildcarding early. Plus I'm a bit impatient when I see problem areas in my team; hence the hits.

In this case I believe he didn't deserve any. He scored a late consolation goal when his team were 4-2 down. Snod and Holt had bagged assists and goals and Bassong added one and obviously had done other things right. If it was 3-0 Swansea I'd agree...it would be outrageous for Michu not to get any. But in this case I don't think he was anywhere near man of the match in terms of the match as a whole.

          Just sayin 😉

That doesn't matter. The PPI is all stats - it doesn't take into account the 'importance' of goals.

The reason Michu got no BAPS is because he had too many shots off target, simples.

Yeah but what importance were Michu's goals? They had no significance in the end. His team's efforts were futile and they lost to an away team that hammered them with 4 goals themselves. And Snod/Holt were outstanding. Their contribution was more important than Michu's who had 6 shots off target. If he'd put more on target maybe his team would have got the result.

I'm a bit freaked out by this Xmas schedule. I only really took FPL seriously post Jan WC last year because it offered me a way to rebuild and to get excited again about it. At least that's how I remember it. This year feels like way more pressure because I'm taking it so seriously. Last year I was all about the punts and going with my gut...this year I'm overloaded with stats research and forward thinking 🙁

    Any advice fellow deadzoners?

This is my 5th year playing FPL. Prior to this season, all I ever cared about was my mini league. Never even looked at my overall rank once in 4 years. I had a good start to the season this year so it changed what used to be a hobby to a 24/7 obsession 😀

This festive period is a real chance for the obsessed among us to do better, as huge number of people will miss deadlines, etc. Given how close games are I'd suggest taking only players that are 100% immune to rotation like Suarez, Bale, etc...

Only get players who are indispensable to their teams. Avoid any risky prospects that may be carrying injuries or are rotation risks. This is the number one priority during this time and it overrides form and fixtures.
