634x258 The Stock Check

A Hugo Rodallega header earns Martin Jol’s side the points and condemns Newcastle to their fifth defeat in six games. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday night’s events…

On the Up

Damien Duff
A brace of assists took the reliable winger to five for the season and made Duff Fulham’s leading Fantasy Premier League points scorer. Duff has been rotated in and out of Martin Jol’s lineup of late but demonstrated his worth and even hinted that, if the Cottagers can get back to goalscoring ways long term, he could present an option, particularly from Gameweeks 19-22 when Fulham face three favourable home fixtures in four.

Steve Sidwell
Another unsung hero in the Fulham ranks, Sidwell was a tireless performer and capped his display with a fourth goal of the season: a strong return for a 5.1 FPL midfielder. Having started the last six, his place seems secure and, like Duff, he could well present a differential for Fulham’s kind schedule from Boxing Day onwards.

Hatem Ben Arfa
The mercurial Frenchman made his return to the Newcastle lineup and reminded of his talents with an equalising goal: his first strike in the league since Gameweek 3. Investment in Ben Arfa looks unlikely given Newcastle’s evil schedule but he’ll be a player expected to enjoy an upturn in 2013 and could yet come into the equation before the season ends.

Going Down

Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian oozed class and was central to Fulham’s attacking ploys throughout; he also had opportunities to notch but the fact remains that Berbatov has now blanked in his last five league outings. With no goal, assist or bonus coming his way since his superb Gameweek 11 performance at the Emirates, it seems likely we’ll see continued sales. His price has dropped from 7.6 to 7.4 in the past two Gameweeks and the fidgeting and steady decline in ownership is likely to continue. Those that hold will be looking beyond the next two away matches and hoping for a change in fortune and, more significantly, a speedy return for Bryan Ruiz as Berbatov’s foil.

The Newcastle Defence
Despite the return of Fabricio Coloccini, Alan Pardew’s back four continued to leak goals: their only clean sheet in the last eleven matches has come against a Wigan side with 10-men for the majority of the match. Away from home, the Magpies have conceded twice in their last three trips. With Man City, United and Arsenal in their next four fixtures, it seems most unlikely that we’ll see an immediate turnaround in fortune.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I want to make a point regarding our short sightedness as an inevitable and normal part of this game. For instance, it might seem a reasonable option to double up on United strikers, back players not on form for the sake of a good run of fixtures, consider punts such as Kolarov as a worthy option despite rotation. These are decisions that require you to stick with them long term no matter how bad the decision may seem to be if things don't quite go as expected. But are we capable of sticking to our convictions even when things don't go our way? We probably would like to see ourselves as strong under pressure but the reality is we often kneejerk and abandon our convictions and dent our pride as we recant our previous convictions. Such long term brilliant idea's can come crashing down at the first sign of it going wrong, why? Simply because we are human and will eventually cave under pressure and kneejerk out past 'brilliant ideas'

You either keep the faith in your 'cleaver ideas' even when things go wrong, or you don't even bother taking needless risks that could easily result in you just flagging the whole idea at the first sign of trouble. I would argue to never avoid trying to be too cleaver and just save yourself the trouble.

The perfect manifestation of what you are saying: Two gameweeks ago, I get in Rooney and Puncheon for a hit. The week after I 'realize' my team is in tatters and wildcard into Suarez (suspended), Bale (injured), Walcott (injured), Fletcher (injured), Jones (dropped), while Rooney goes amok. Obviously extremely unlucky, but still.

      Perfect example of this:

I got Sess in for Michu 2 weeks ago for a 4 game punt.

Michu scores 3 goals in the 2 games I don't have him.

Got Michu back in for Sess this GW. Screw the DGW.

      Michu scores a brace.

Sometimes you just have to suck it up and admit you made a mistake.

Absolutely, I had to do that last week when I sold Silva after only one game and bought in Michu. They key though is to not make such mistakes at all and the best way to do that is to avoid 'cleaver ideas' and just play the game safe.

Sometimes it's not all our fault though.

I'm sitting on 5 flagged players, 3 of which were brought in the last 2 weeks.

I could take some of those out, a very fair option given the doubt, and they could still go and score goals next week.

Giroud being the prime antagonist here...

All the more reason to not take unnecessary risks on some players. Because if it goes wrong it can be compounded if your squad gets hit by injuries.

This described my season perfectly. Kneejerking has made my rank fallen from around 100k to 1 mil. When I finally tired of it and stop doing those transfers, my rank has slowly rising every week to the point of 400k now.

I can't say my 400k rank is a good one ofc, but I know if I keep my faith in my players, these green arrows could lead me to the top 100k again before new year 🙂

Kind of a different situation there. In general its never a good idea to take tons of hits. We have to realise that all transfers are essentially long term so its best not to bring in dodgy players or back dodgy ideas unless you're willing to go through with it long term. Otherwise it will just result in wasted transfers as you soon realise it was a silly idea to bring in that player in the first place resulting in more hits.

In essence play the game safe then you won't be sorry.

Very true. Sess for instance was a DGW kneejerk, if he fails tomorrow it will be a waste of two transfers for many people. That can be costly. The key is to identify the level of risk attached to any player you're considering about bringing in. If you get a guy with form AND fixtures then there's a greater chance it will come off good.

Fantasy football is a funny game.

Player A has two shots and scores both (despite one being a scuffed mis-hit). He creates 2 chances

Player B has 4 shots (3 in the box, two on target) but is denied by excellent goal-keeping. He created 4 chances.

Both play in a similar position for their team and have penalties. Player A cost ~£12m, player B costs ~£7.5m.

Everyone wants to sell player B and buy player A. Justified?

If yes: Not sure you can boil it down to those factors. Rooney plays for United, is pretty nailed on, on form (has the Rooney self confidence, at least, which is important for that guy it seems), and has great fixtures. Berba has no end product of late, doesn't have the same fixtures, and doesn't have the same tradition of doing well during Christmas time.

at the end of the day it's all about whether you can put it in the back of the net or set someone up to put it in the back of the net. there's a reason not many people got suarez in their teams last year: he wasn't getting too many fpl points for hitting the post all the time

I actually thought Rooney meant to put the ball where it ended up. Mis-hit or not.

If we are just basing the decision on one game, perhaps your point is valid. But when we look at the fact that Berba hasn't scored for a while whereas Rooney has grabbed 2 successive braces and has a better run of games, then it is perhaps not surprising that people are buying Rooney and selling Berba.

Now you're going to tell me that the 7.5 player to whom you refer is not Berbatov, in which case I will get my coat 😀

I'd probably right that if everyone had an unlimited budget that they'd take Rooney over Berba. However, that's not the case. I'm not arguing that they should be mutually exclusive, just that I find it interesting that there's so much talk of buying Rooney and selling Berba and I just thought that observation was interesting to make.

      Depends who that someone is!

I'd be in no rush to sell either Berba or Tevez so I'd prioritise either upgrading Wisdom (if you have the cash) or swapping Sess out. Wait until after the Sunderland game and if possible for confirmation of Enrique's fitness either way.

When you ask is it madness, is that because you think it is? I think it's a valid tactic. I imagine with their run of fixtures that they'll keep a few cleanies over the next few.

I categorically and without reservation say, "maybe". Suarez is currently in the keeper category for the rest of the season for me. You will be glad you have him when all is said and done. But, my initial reaction was that it isn't worth the hit, particularly with Berbatov at QPR.

I then added the caveat, that it wouldn't be worth a hit ..., unless you're planning to double down and give Suarez the armband this week. And, I'm currently leaning that way. But that would be the decision-maker for me in your shoes. I'd only take the hit if I'm also giving the armband. If it's not an armband decision, just wait and do it next week.

          Good luck.

Strong possibility that Bale is fit for Swansea:

Need some help guys. My ranking is dropping fast.

What would you do with this team? Can still wildcard.

Was going with a cheap defence after getting rid of Baines. Think I got sucked in to the DGW.

    Mignolet - Jussi
    Rangel - Cuellar - Cameron - B Jones - Shorey
    Sterling - Michu - Fellaini - Sessegnon - Silva
    Berbatov - Suarez - RVP

    Begovic / Jaaskelainen
    Baines / Hughes / Shorey / Cuellar / Nelsen
    Fellaini / Bale / Nolan / Michu / McAnuff
Berbatov / Giroud / Van Persie

1 FT, £4.1m in the bank.

Giroud to Suarez on the cards, though I think I can give Giroud a week with Reading. Leaves me with an option to do Cuellar to GJ. Thoughts?
