Sunderland seal a crucial win over Reading to drag themselves out of the drop zone. James McClean and Steven Fletcher grab the first-half goals, while Stephane Sessegnon leaves his Fantasy owners frantic before finally slotting home a late third.

On the Up

Stephane Sessegnon
Over 68,000 FPL managers drafted in the Benin international prior to the double Gameweek deadline – Steven Fletcher, Adam Johnson and James McClean had a combined tally of around 36,000. With seconds to go, we were cursing our luck as it seemed he was to disappoint but Sessegnon duly delivered to put a smile on plenty Fantasy managers’ faces. With United, City, Spurs and Liverpool in his next five, though, many will be already planning an exit.

Steven Fletcher
Martin O’Neill was particularly cagey over the forward’s chances of starting tonight after his recent ankle injury. Fletcher missed out against Chelsea at the weekend but managed to shrug off the problem to notch his seventh strike of the season. Now up to 74 points in FPL, he’s ahead of the likes of Wayne Rooney but the above-mentioned run of upcoming fixtures is likely to deter many more from investing.

Adam Johnson
The former City man benefitted from an “FPL” assist earlier this evening. A corner from Johnson was cleared by the visitors defence but only as far as James McClean – the winger’s converted attempt boosted his fellow wide man’s double Gameweek haul. Johnson has now produced attacking returns in five of his last seven appearances, though his owners were denied the chance of further points after he was subbed off at half-time with a leg problem.

James McClean
Prior to the double Gameweek, the winger had managed a single assist all season and had started just two of Sunderland’s previous six. Having provided an assist for Adam Johnson’s consolation against Chelsea at the weekend, he needed just one minute to open his account for the season and suggest he’s starting to come into form after a poor first half of the campaign.

Going Down

Kaspars Gorkss
As expected, Sean Morrison failed to recover from the ankle injury sustained against Southampton last weekend. Surprisingly, though, it was Alex Pearce who was given the nod to start alongside Adrian Mariappa, suggesting the Latvian has slipped even further down the pecking order for a spot at centre-half.

Phil Bardsley
Having started the previous six, his place at right-back seemed assured since recovering from a hamstring injury. It was something of a surprise, then, to see Bardsley dropped to the bench, with Craig Gardner preferred at right-back instead. He came on after the break to replace the injured Johnson but lasted just 31 minutes before limping off injured.

Sunderland Injuries
Martin O’Neill has plenty concerns ahead of the weekend trip to United. Danny Rose joined Johnson and Bardsley in limping off – in a defensive reshuffle, Carlos Cuellar finished the match at right-back as Titus Bramble entered the fray at centre-half. If the injuries are carried into the weekend, Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney owners will be even more confident of returns.

    Repost: need more opinions

    Which option is better?

    A) Rooney + Suarez + Snodgrass

    B) Suarez + Ba + Bale

    C) Defoe + Rooney + 7.7 mil

    **Third forard is RVP

    D) No RVP- Suarez + Rooney + Defoe + Mata

    E) No RVP- Suarez + Rooney + Torres + Bale

Can't decide. What do you think?

Bale poss injured, but has great fixtures.

Yay or Nay? Lambert and Sess out Aguero and Bradley Johnson in for a hit? I figure Johnson has a decent fixture this week and he can play for Mata and then he rides the bench until January.

Well I won't captain him. But I don't really think that means I shouldn't do it, especially since I'll only have 10 players if I do it in two steps.

My bad, Lambert obviously has a blank doesn't he.

Plus you having only 10 players makes that a problem, therefore do it.

No problem. I forgot to mention also that Aguero will be a real captain contender very soon (GW 18) so get him in either this week or next.

With the 10 players though, taking the hit instead of only doing Sess > Johnson would mean Aguero would have to return something against Newcastle, so it's up to you whether you'd feel comfortable with that. Though it probably seems a good bet.

Cheers. There's certainly risk. Aguero could explode, or he could barely match Lambert's production for twice the price...

        Midfield is Sess/Sterling/Silva/Fellaini/Mata

RVP and Suarez are the other two strikers.

so if I get Aguero I'll be more comfortable losing Silva for Bale, and then I'll probably get Punch or Ramirez for Sterling in the near future.

My intent had been to shift from Bale to Silva at this pt of season but I'm holding Bale now. May shift Cazorla to Silva in a week or two but am waiting to see how Silva pans out. Punch looking a good option too. Should also look at Michu.

I think that would be very worth it. Rafael is in my team, but I'm very worried about rotation now. You don't get that with Shawcross or Suarez.

I'm keeping an eye on Torres, but it's easy to jump ship from Suarez, harder the other way.

Berba isn't 'out of form', he just isn't getting the FPL points. He had a great game vs. Newcastle and was unlucky not to score.

I hate saying points are 'due' with a player, but with Berbs I think they are.

Hmmm, in a tricky situation this GW.

With Southampton players having no fixture and defensive injuries, I may struggle to field 11 - I'm fielding 4-4-2 as it is:

    Begovic (Foster*)
    Baines Sagna Evans* Demel** (Bardsley*)
    Michu Fellaini Sess Sterling (Puncheon***)
    RVP Suarez (Lambert***)

    * = injured ** = rotation risk *** = no fixture

1FT, 4.2 in bank. Looks like it's worth getting two defenders in for a 4pt hit isn't it, because I may end up playing 9 or 10 otherwise!

Was thinking Bardsley > Johnson and Evans > Rafael for their great fixtures.

I don't see sense in benching your form striker for an unpredictable mercenary whose attitude sucks. I don't think 4-4-2 will continue so I think avb will have to choose between Ade and Defoe. And sadly once again I think Defoe will be hard done by. International level, club level, his bloody goalscoring has never been fully appreciated.

That'd be an extremely heavy defence. You're going to find it hard to get in Bale/Mata/Cazorla if u need them in the near future without a hit or two.

Evans > Rafael and upgrade Sess maybe?

4.2 in bank - I can upgrade Sess to bale without fuss - fellaini and michu are heavy hitters IMO so I'm ok there - quite keen to go defence heavy at this time of year looking at the fixtures of mun, ars, liv, eve too. Can always exit with the wc, but looking at fielding 4 at the back til gw22.

Get in Berbatov if you can. He had an immense game last GW and was unlucky not to score good points. He is the focal point of Fulham and they have decent fixtures over this period and he will be nailed on. Its important to have nailed on players during busy schedules and it'll provide you the freedom of mind having to worry about the situation you currently are and rotation.

My problem is that when I have a linked team I feel like then the advice I get is too tilted through the lens of "coverage" which I'm not how I feel about. I prefer to get unbiased advice about the players in the transfers. Of course, when people ask, I just tell them so not sure it really matters....

      Well.
I was deliberating over Gunter -> Cuellar all week for a 4 point hit.
You should have done it, says you. Gunter 0 points, Cuellar 10 points.
In reality it meant I got Rafael auto-sub for 9 points (without the 4 point hit).
It's a funny bloody game, this FPL.
PS, I still own Gunter, which is shit obviously.

How many have doubled on RVP and Rooney?
Not quite anxious, but does feel like quite a knee jerk!

I did it four weeks ago, now. And then I chickened out and dumped Rooney before his goal explosion. I feel like he should send me half his paycheck.

I have that option. I have millions of cash and could do Fletcher -> Rooney for free.
But I have decided to be brave and go for Aguero instead.
      RVP, Aguero, Suarez FTW.

Any more news on Giroud? If Bale is good for the weekend I'm planning a Sess+Fletch>Bale+Berbs. Giroud out could throw a wrench in my gears....

Very true! Seems like utter madness though, I mean Michu got 2 goals in half the time 😀
