So Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Darren Bent from Sunderland for a club record fee, believed to be in the region of a staggering £24 million. The striker is set to be formally unveiled at a press conference this evening.

As we stated yesterday when the news of Villa’s bid and Bent’s transfer request broke, the move seems an odd one and not necessarily an event that will immediately boost the Fantasy potential of a striker who has dipped considerably in returns following last season’s 24 league goal haul.

Bent has so far recorded just 8 league strikes, despite Sunderland showing decent form and “overachieving” – the Black Cats currently sit in 6th place. Villa, in contrast, are languishing just above the relegation places having suffered a stuttering season with Gerard Houllier’s arrival failing to spark a revival in fortunes.

Goals have been a major problem – Villa have notched just 24 in 22 league games. This aggressive move in the transfer market should provide a solution. Bent has proven himself on the Premier League stage in previous seasons and, if Villa can maximise the service to him, he will surely start repaying the substantial fee sooner rather than later.

While Bent’s Fantasy Premier League price of 8.6 is unlikely to tempt immediate investment at a time when the likes of Carlos Tevez, Robin Van Persie and even Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, are attracting the bulk of the investment up front, Villa’s new acquisition must be watched and a glimmer of form could spark interest. Villa’s run of opponents between Gameweek 30 and 36 looks a particularly promising period for Bent and his new team-mates.

Villa are one of the teams facing a double fixture in Gameweek 24 with a home clash with City, followed by a trip to Wigan next week. Those fixtures appear to offer Bent an immediate platform to register his first goal in the claret and blue.

Fantasy Managers must also consider the knock-on effects of this deal; if Houllier can retain both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, then their potential to earn assists will surely be boosted by the arrival of a proven finisher. The same could be said of Marc Albrighton if he can regain a starting role.

We must also wait to assess the impact on the January transfer window. Only today there have been articles suggesting that should the Bent deal be completed, it would ripple throughout the Premier League and prove the catalyst for a number of moves that will likely influence our Fantasy selections over the coming weeks. John Carew’s switch to West Brom could well be the first development of many to emerge in the next week or so.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Wellesley v Bonaparte
    Chiang Kai-Shek v Mao Zedong
Elizabeth v Mary Queen of Scouts
    Toffs v Proles
    Members v Non Members

After the rampant demolition of the communist Non Member hordes last gameweek, the triumphant Members re-captured all ground lost since Christmas, and pushed deep in to the Mordor of Non-Memberville.

    GAMEWEEK 22
The onslaught continued, the retreating non-members attempted to regroup to hold back the methodical vengeance of the members. The Members were led by a young ensign Jamsie P. He brayed with a donkey like laugh as he slaughtered all before him with a massive 82 points. But alas! In the very moment of his triumph, as he captured the enemys flag, once again the Beast Known As 'M' lopped off his head and defiled his mortal remains most brutally. Will the horrendous beast ever be stopped? And did he do enough to pluck victory out of the grasps of defeat for the non-members? The cumulative scores are as follows:

    ..............drum roll...........
    MEMBERS 1090 v 1061 NON MEMBERS

    The Members continue their onslaught.

    GAMEWEEK 23

This battle saw the hordes of non-members turn on their heels to facing the baying pack of Members hell bent on their destruction. Chief amongst the Members was Yes Don with 67 points, however he was smashed by Sum Ting Wong who scored an impressive 75. The cumulative scores are as follows:

    MEMBERS 842 v 840 NON MEMBERS

The narrowest victory yet! A mere two points separate the sides, who both having suffered grievous losses pull away from each other to regroup. Next week there is talk of another bigger gameweek, it should be the highest scoring one yet, and it needs to be a good one for the Non-Members who are trailing by an ever increasing margin. The overall cumulative scores are as follows:

    MEMBERS 19907 v 19786 NON MEMBERS

The lead has increased to 121, plenty of time to turn it around though. Thanks all for playing.

Pretty standard for here, very cheap defence. Just need to decide 2 out of Tevez (lose 0.5/6 if I sell him), Rooney and Torres up front. What about you?

I saw you post about Kelly on 606 while I was at work yesterday btw! (or maybe it was SuperDunny .. I get confused)

Erm, not bad, same as you really, extremely cheap defence which will enable me to have Fabregas, Rooney, Torres & RVP.

It's these regularly updated Opta stats. They are like muskets compared to our Zulu spears. I won't have a bad word said about them after the Opta people shut up both Jamsie P and DBcrackers in one foul swoop with their team of the year. <3 Opta.

I'm in the league as a member but I'm a bit of a dead weight. I rarely use the stats and never for when I'm making transfers. Lately, I'm trying to get value out of them by looking at stats I don't even care about

Shhh that's seditious and borderline treason.
Saying that though before the last double gameweek I used the stats to judge Crainey a better prospect than Evatt for my Blackpool defender. Result? Assist for Evatt and balls all for Crainey. There are lies, damned lies and statistics.

Ah right, well it wasn't that dramatic unfortunately. But they both stopped slagging Rooney immediately, of which DBR has been doing relentlessly for weeks prior. I'd have actually paid good money to see the shock on his potato raveged face when he saw that line up. The Kalou reaction was serious lols too.

If you want the OPTA team this is it (googled)

Opta's PL Team of 2010: Foster, A.Cole, Ferdinand, Terry, Sagna, Kalou, Van der Vaart, Lampard, Nani, Berbatov & Rooney.

For those asking, the team is based on the Opta scoring system & only includes players to have played 1000+ mins in 2010.

              Oh and KALOU?!

Chaps, what do you think of this Wildcard team:

    Hart
    Kelly Vidic Djourou
    Cesc Walcott Vdv Nani Adam
    Berba Tevez

Stockdale DJ, Kolarov, Simpson. 0 in the bank.

Or i could do Evra & Nasri for Vidic & Walcott and i would have 0.4 in the bank.

Vidic will be downgraded once Rafael is back.

Chaps, read a comment on here a few weeks back about Modric being the player that 'provides the pass before the assist'... so looked into it and the grand consequence of which is an article on the Croatian, esp seeing as he earned so much praise during the ManU game last weekend. http://wp.me/p16qgr-rL Feel free to have a browse and/or comment the pants off it - any feedback much appreciated.

In a nutshell however, it shows this - on FANTASY he might not be getting the goals/assists we all crave, but his influence on Spurs's general play and importance to his side is revealed in the bonus points he has gathered over the last eight matches: 3 2 2 0 3 3 0 3 (that's 16 out of a possible 24... not bad going!!).

    Anyways, all the best folks...

Sorry for the delay alang i was getting some food. He says hes the second best player in the world after messi. He says him, dzeko and tevez is the best attack in the world (theyve never played together). He says berlusconi musnt have heard of him in light of berlusconis recent comments regarding cassano being the best italian talent around (a term im sure that old codger has used several times in describing 16yr old prostitutes no doubt). He says hes never heard of jack wilshire (runner up in the world young player awards) when surely any entrant in a competetion/awards ceremony will obviously have checked out their opposition. Im sure theres more those are just off the top of my head.

The kind of open attacking play the Magpies favour, give him the potential to rake points in. It could be a goal fest of a game.

Quiet a few in here seem to want to bench him. Sounds decidedly dodge to me.

Peanuts is utility gold - a no-lose signing; he could be sold at the end of next season for a big profit if it all goes tits up, but I can see him being the perfect fit for us if he plays like last season.

I'm really expecting good things from him. Plus a 3-1 loss on the weekend.

I don't think so. He flourishes as more of a second striker than someone who can dictate from midfield.

Not really. He couldn't play in the current 442 as the midfielders both need box to box style play, and be able to defend. Thanks to mr berbatov united very rarely play 433 any more and i can't see him being happy on the bench. It basically comes down to Berba vs Vdv. I'd pick VdV probably but SAF won't, he's invested too much in the Bulgarian.

Wow, just logged in for the first bit of football news all day to find the two most ridiculous transfers in a long time.

£24m for Bent? If they have that money to spend, surely they could get a world beater.

And personally I see Pienaar as no more than a squad player at Spurs.

I think Ill ship Hart for VDS and not have to worry about trying to fit in Roo or Berbs. Ill have VDS, Vidic and Nani for MU representation.
