Arsenal and Newcastle serve up a post-Christmas cracker in a 10-goal thriller at the Emirates. Theo Walcott has a hand in five of the Gunners’ seven strikes, while Olivier Giroud and Demba Ba both bag doubles. Here’s the follow-up to our early-evening Stock Check:

On the Up

Theo Walcott
In his third straight start as the lone forward for Arsenal, Walcott ran riot this evening with three goals and a couple of assists in a quite sensational display against Newcastle. With a trip to former club Southampton up next and double Gameweek 23 on the horizon, Walcott’s bandwagon is set to roar into action over the next couple of days; with the likes of Gareth Bale and Kevin Nolan now suspended for Gameweek 21 and doubts remaining over Michu’s availability, his transfer in will be a priority for those looking to freshen up their five man midfields.

Olivier Giroud
The Frenchman produced a two-goal salvo after climbing off the bench to suggest Arsene Wenger has options through the middle, though. While Walcott’s starting role is not in question, his performance on the right after Giroud’s introduction was equally eye-catching – certainly, Wenger has plenty of in-form options ahead of the St Mary’s trip.

Demba Ba
Once again, the Newcastle forward was amongst the Fantasy points this evening. The recent schedule had looked against Alan Pardew’s side but Ba’s double at the Emirates means has produced a goal or assist against United, City and Arsenal in the last four. Now up to second in the forward rankings behind Robin Van Persie, Ba continues to look fixture proof, despite his side’s top-flight struggles this term.

Lukas Podolski
A goal and assist from the German proved crucial as the Gunners fought off a valiant effort from their visitors. Podolski is hitting form just at the right time ahead of Arsenal’s double Gameweek 23 – he had notched a goal and pair of assists at Reading in Gameweek 17 and is another firmly on the radar, with an 8.2 price tag furthering his appeal.

Sylvain Marveaux
A peripheral figure in the Magpies’ starting line-up this term, the Frenchman’s display suggests he may be deserving of more game time under Alan Pardew. While Marveaux’s goal will have caught the eye of Fantasy managers, a stunning pass for Ba’s second hints at a player high on confidence right now. If he can maintain his starting berth, a 4.2 price tag is intriguing.

Going Down

Newcastle Defence
Alan Pardew’s backline have now conceded 11 goals in their last two matches, with injuries and suspensions again decimating their chances. The Magpies will now have Mike Williamson back for their home clash with Everton on Wednesday but with a handful of their first-team regulars still unavailable, they are in danger of being drawn into a real relegation scrap this term.

Arsenal Defence
Wenger’s side went into tonight’s game with two clean sheets in their previous three but Newcastle’s trio of goals will lessen the Arsenal backline’s appeal ahead of the double Gameweek. Although Kieran Gibbs impressed going forward with a third assist in his last three, Arsenal’s display at the back suggests he may have to maintain his current form if he’s to pick up the points.

In the best of Bale highlights on MOTD he has been clipped (far more significantly then he was for the dive) repeatedly and not gone to ground. He just decided to make too much of the YC incident because he was in the box. Clear dive.

Nothing to do with the assist-it's whether the goal standas as Ruiz's as it touched Riether on way in. Press Association have awarded it to Ruiz and so it's only if that changes(extremely rare)-see our comments on 'page 8' including Granville's..

It's pretty hard to say for sure.

FACT is that Ruiz' shot hit Riether before it went in, but what really matters for us is how it will go down in the official data. Since the touch was about 30 cm outside goal and since Riether didn't do anything to touch it I think it might stay as a Ruiz goal and a Berbatov assist after all.

    Repost

So people think I’m an idiot for suggesting that is a Lambert goal…

But what if Wilkinson was standing on the line.

Lambert heads the ball towards goal (on target)

The ball bounces off the ground and Wilkinson misjudges the flight of it.

Wilkinson tries to head the ball above him but it accidentally goes into the roof of the net.

    is that an own goal?

re: diving. bale today, you'll hear everyone shiting on about contact etc. but, if you look at this case, while there is contact, it is to his right side, and if you actually look at it, if you use your left leg properly, you'll still stay up easily. instead, he drags his right foot along ground and then falls over. this indicates to me trained diving which is worrying. and all the people going "contact" just makes it worse.

    i'm a bale owner

Agree totally. After going on about the contact and how he was entitled to go down MOTD then showed highlights of Bale's game in which he was clipped (often more significantly than for the dive) repeatedly and didn't go to ground or even wobble. Just goes to show that he could easily have continued, but realised he was in the box and tried to cheat.

Totally disagree, when you're watching a slow motion replay it's easy to forget, but when Bale is running full speed he is going incredibly fast. It's impossible to stay on your feet and regain your balance in the amount of time he would have to.

    Re: The diving debate.

Does everyone agree that if referees occasionally gave a penalty for a foul in which the fouled player didn't actually go down, it might prevent players feeling the needs to go down in the box?

The phrase 'entitled to go down' might become redundant in place of 'I got fouled in the box, so I'm entitled to a penalty kick regardless of my reaction'.

There's a difference between a dive and going down easily. A dive means no contact at all surely and that should be a yellow. But if there is some contact, but not enough to naturally knock a player over, and a player consciously decides to go down i don't think that is a dive but its also not necessarily a penalty.

I think one of the main issues is often there is contact such as shirt pulling, the player doesn't go down then loses the opportunity to score and so gets nothing and had he gone down it would have been a pen. Refs don't give pens unless you fall over.

it clearly hit riether, which i suppose, must mean his goal. but if it was a defender it wouldn't be an o.g so i'm not sure.

Oh how happy I was to have finally gotten rid of Boyce this week.

Hahhaha fantasy pain. I love it.

Kneejerjked Bale to Walcott, it feels good oh yeah.

Big lesson learned about STICKING TO THE PLAN though, as plan was to Morrioson/Enrique to Walcott/defemder this week, but Bale's huge game last week made me decide Silva/Boyce to Bale/O'Brien was the sensible thing.

    Joy to the world.

If Lambert's was goal than Ruiz's was even more, his was also on target

you seem to want to change the rules based on whether you own the player

      Ruiz's shot was on target

By your rules on the Lambert 'goal' that is a Ruiz goal

Difference is the colour of the shirt worn by the player who got the touch. Them the rules

That makes it pretty conclusive that the Berbatov assist will stay imo. Weird.

This is also used for betting rules. They've already paid out on Ruiz and the Wilkinson OG, if you can indeed make those bets.

I'm a Berbatov owner and I think it's shocking if it stays as a Ruiz goal.

That said, I think it might.

well by Santiago's rule, if it's a Lambert goal, it's a Ruiz goal.

Ok just to end all the bickering, I've emailed FPL wondering if there will be a review of 3 events.

    1) Yaya's assist for Aguero's goal (seems to take a touch of Bassong outside the box)
    2) Puncheon's assist/Lambert goal as oppose to Wilkinson OG.
    3) Demba Ba's free kick that deflected in off Jack Wilshere.

Don't really care about the outcomes, I just wanna see what the story is so everyone can stop panicking..
