Arsenal and Newcastle serve up a post-Christmas cracker in a 10-goal thriller at the Emirates. Theo Walcott has a hand in five of the Gunners’ seven strikes, while Olivier Giroud and Demba Ba both bag doubles. Here’s the follow-up to our early-evening Stock Check:

On the Up

Theo Walcott
In his third straight start as the lone forward for Arsenal, Walcott ran riot this evening with three goals and a couple of assists in a quite sensational display against Newcastle. With a trip to former club Southampton up next and double Gameweek 23 on the horizon, Walcott’s bandwagon is set to roar into action over the next couple of days; with the likes of Gareth Bale and Kevin Nolan now suspended for Gameweek 21 and doubts remaining over Michu’s availability, his transfer in will be a priority for those looking to freshen up their five man midfields.

Olivier Giroud
The Frenchman produced a two-goal salvo after climbing off the bench to suggest Arsene Wenger has options through the middle, though. While Walcott’s starting role is not in question, his performance on the right after Giroud’s introduction was equally eye-catching – certainly, Wenger has plenty of in-form options ahead of the St Mary’s trip.

Demba Ba
Once again, the Newcastle forward was amongst the Fantasy points this evening. The recent schedule had looked against Alan Pardew’s side but Ba’s double at the Emirates means has produced a goal or assist against United, City and Arsenal in the last four. Now up to second in the forward rankings behind Robin Van Persie, Ba continues to look fixture proof, despite his side’s top-flight struggles this term.

Lukas Podolski
A goal and assist from the German proved crucial as the Gunners fought off a valiant effort from their visitors. Podolski is hitting form just at the right time ahead of Arsenal’s double Gameweek 23 – he had notched a goal and pair of assists at Reading in Gameweek 17 and is another firmly on the radar, with an 8.2 price tag furthering his appeal.

Sylvain Marveaux
A peripheral figure in the Magpies’ starting line-up this term, the Frenchman’s display suggests he may be deserving of more game time under Alan Pardew. While Marveaux’s goal will have caught the eye of Fantasy managers, a stunning pass for Ba’s second hints at a player high on confidence right now. If he can maintain his starting berth, a 4.2 price tag is intriguing.

Going Down

Newcastle Defence
Alan Pardew’s backline have now conceded 11 goals in their last two matches, with injuries and suspensions again decimating their chances. The Magpies will now have Mike Williamson back for their home clash with Everton on Wednesday but with a handful of their first-team regulars still unavailable, they are in danger of being drawn into a real relegation scrap this term.

Arsenal Defence
Wenger’s side went into tonight’s game with two clean sheets in their previous three but Newcastle’s trio of goals will lessen the Arsenal backline’s appeal ahead of the double Gameweek. Although Kieran Gibbs impressed going forward with a third assist in his last three, Arsenal’s display at the back suggests he may have to maintain his current form if he’s to pick up the points.

Don't like ManU double up front. You can get pts with other players/matches and have an alternative when main hitters fail, if they do.

Would have been Davies but him being 'rested' (hmmm) is making me anxious. I had him pencilled in...but now what to make of it??

O'Brien has decent fixtures and DGW to look forward to. Jones...hmmm risky as he could be rotated. Might get a run with injuries though. Honestly I'd have to think about this one more Snake...it's too hard to call. Their fixtures all are pretty favourable. O'Brien I would say is your safest bet in terms of him being pretty much guaranteed to start.

Tiendelli I think, looks to me like a temporary switch to give Davies a rest. Monk and Chico/Williams (can't remember which one) started CBs with Rangel...suppose it was just a good time to rotate his team maybe. Makes me feel anxious about Davies now though...annoying!

    Any ideas for a transfer?

Thing that makes me particularly reluctant to buy into the 3-5-2 big midfield strategy is weeks like this. My strikers seriously saved my ass this week. Yes I could have had Walcott but he was owned by 3.5% for a few damn good reasons. There are some weeks where you need to have that reliability that 3 strikers are going to try their damnedest to get you that goal...even if it takes 10 shots off target before one bounces off their face and into the net in the 94th minute after they lost their shoes.

Michu and Fellaini causes the problem though. It means we can only have 2 big hitting mids. Thats no good when a fair few big hitting mids are on form.

If you want 3 big hitting mids say Bale, Walcott, Mata but you already want/have Michu & Fellaini then you left with a viable option to go will all of them. I'm so far juggling with my options and Michu and Fellaini are non negotiable. So the decision then is, which 2 big hitters I get. Its not a terrible idea to just get 3 if there's nothing in it.

Precisely although that does leave you with a benching dilemma. A 5m striker wouldn't be the worst idea to alleviate that problem but I'm sure you wouldn't want to get Di Santo again 😉

Benching dilemna? Someone's always getting crocked/dropped/rested/rotated etc etc at this time of the year. Then there's the weather to factor in too.

This is the only time of year (Jan-Feb) when you need 15 players.

Thanks to all the deadzoners who convinced me to take my first -4 of the season and get Walcott in, a nice little earner. It's given me my best overall rank of all time!
With regards to Ba, I've been relying on him for a while, no huge returns but he chips in almost every week no matter who he plays. I'd much prefer that than someone I have to think about every week - like Suarez or Tevez

Have them both right now. I hardly noticed Caz today though (may have been overly obsessed by Walcott). Wigan game he hardly ever got into the box and same today. Was much more impressed with Podolski. Assist for Walcott was great, he played another great ball from which Walcott forced a save and one more close assist which I can't remember specifically right now

    Begovic (Mannone)
    Rafael Enrique Davies demel (cueller)
    Sterling tarabt Walcott (bale michu)
    Rvp berbs Suarez...

So I have quiet a few problems with bale demel michu all missing next gw.
A: demel >> obrien....didn't know demel is going to afcon, was holding him for Dgw.
    B: tarabt >> brunt
C: bale >> mata and bring him back following gw
D: tarabt + Rafael >> fellaini + obrien for a hit...bt will leave me 0.1 short to do sterling >> Nolan following week.

I am leaning towards A or B...mata might be rested against qpr...and since will finally play against Wigan, doesn't make sense to take him out

Something to take note of fellas (from a City fan).

With Nasri out for 3 games surely, since it was a headbutt/violent charge/conduct, and with Yaya gone for a month or more, that opens up some space for the likes of Milner and Sinclair (dont bother!!!), and also watch Tevez for the hole/attacking mid spot. Kolarov could be the very best differential/choice when he returns (if quick enough), plus anyone we pick up can go straight in possibly.

Please keep that all in mind if you haven't already. We have some quality fixtures coming up in January and early February.

I'd be worried about none of Bale, Mata or Michu playing midweek. But it's hard to know what to do because Mata and Michu may play. I would wait till Monday and news on Mata/Michu before deciding anything

definitely would consider Fellaini and I have a similar dilema. I have Bale, Michu, Caz, Walcott and Yaya. Was all set to do Yaya to Fellaini this week but need a rethink with Bale and possibly Michu out.
Can't get rid of Michu as I got him for 6.5. Maybe I'll do Bale to Fellaini, then get Bale back in for Yaya. You could do Bale to Fellaini, then get Bale back for Mata or carry on without Bale

If you bought Michu recently I'd switch him for Fellaini this week, but not if you will lose too much value as you'll probably want him back in the wildcard.

But who would you bench?? They are all starters.

I would monitor the Swansea situation regarding their purchases in Jan.
If they bring in a striker it may mean less goals for Michu (or may not) but out of those 5 mids he would be the one to downgrade to a 'cheaper bench-able' mid.
3-4-3 will always be the way to go i feel.

What's the Defense looking like? See I'm thinking aguero and marveux/punch/maloney over berb and afro

My take is that you are to either downgrade Fellaini or Michu to a cheap budget midfielder in order to get Aguero or Suarez as your second elite striker. You can't play all 8 every week. Having that kind of front 8 means you cannot have a second elite striker and you face dilemma every week which of your front 8 should be benched.

        That's what I was saying.

Suarez is my 2nd striker now.

What's everyone's current rank? Pleased or need to work on it?

Mine is 25,234...which is my highest this season.

Hadn't played FF for many seasons, so wasn't doing well in the beginning, but think I'm finally playing the game correctly. Onwards and upwards

Currently, on 120,845th. Was on 137,454th in the first gameweek but suffered a string of setbacks due to my reluctance in activating the season wildcard. This gameweek seems to be the highest of all for me.

Good question, many in the same dilemma i feel.
It may come down to which of those two drop in price before the other.
I personally believe Michu will only be back for the FA cup tie vs Arsenal.

He is on -65 NTI at the moment.
Seeing as he isnt playing today i doubt it will change into a +NTI until his red flag disappear, and even then most 'casual' players will have other mids on their radar at the moment.
I would hold off a bit, you might get him for even cheaper pretty soon.

    Morning lads!

Some help needed in making up my mind! Should I take a 4pt hit to do the following transfers..

    Hernandez and Bale out
    Fellaini and Defoe in.

Also I'd probably captain Defoe too.

What do you think? Any help really appreciated. Cheers!

Your link is broken. If you have only recently transferred in Hernandez and are already looking to ship him out, I'd say no. At least, keep him for a few gameweeks.

How would you pay for Sterling->Felliani
    A: MacAuley->4.0 defender (Harte?)
    B: Suarez->8.8 forward (Defoe/Fletcher/Berbatov)
