Liverpool brush past a woeful QPR as Luis Suarez masterminds a first half dismantling of the R’s defence. Over at Goodison, Everton’s unbeaten home record is snatched by another efficient Chelsea display under Rafa Benitez as Frank Lampard fires a brace. Here’s the Notes from Sunday’s two Gameweek 20 encounters…

Suarez Torments The Hapless R’s
Two more strikes from Luis Suarez capped a performance that simply dazzled QPR’s centre-back pairing of Ryan Nelsen and Clint Hill. The R’s rearguard failed to find answers for the Uruguayan’s movement and his confidence was clear throughout – Fantasy managers without Suarez will be thankful that he failed to add to his early two goal tally as the match progressed. Before the late goal against Fulham at Anfield in Gameweek 18, Suarez had gone four league starts without a strike – his longest run without Fantasy returns this season. We’ve seen a new level of consistency from the Liverpool man, then, suggesting that forthcoming fixtures against Sunderland, United and Norwich could continue to bring profit. The schedule does stiffen, however, with Arsenal and City to follow soon after the United visit – Suarez will have to demonstrate fixture proof status if he is to keep pace with the leading forwards on show – Robin Van Persie and Demba Ba. So far in the Gameweek, interest in Suarez has been tempered with Ba enjoying twice as many new suitors off the back of his brace at the Emirates and perhaps talk of a move to Stamford Bridge in January.

Gerrard’s Quiet Resurgence Continues
While our attentions turn to the likes of Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini in the light of Gareth Bale’s one-match ban, Steven Gerrard sits out of the limelight having scored or assisted in his last five league starts. Gerrard’s consistency in December has been superb and has seen him scale the FPL midfielder rankings and has threatened to establish him as a viable transfer target once more. A punt on Gerrard as a Bale replacement with Sunderland visiting Anfield on Wednesday would seem a decent move, although this would likely only be a short-term measure; as mentioned, Liverpool’s schedule hands them a series of tough opponents that will likely dent attacking potential over the next month.

Mata Makes His Case
The Spaniard is another who has shown a frightening level of consistency to earn himself a constant stream of Fantasy suitors. His assist and two bonus points from Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Goodison means that, like Gerrard, he has returned in his last five league starts. With QPR at the Bridge on Wednesday, Mata looks well placed to earn investment with some Bale owners looking to swap their suspended asset. The concern with Mata is, of course, rotation within the Chelsea squad. Mata has started the last four league outings, with Eden Hazard, Oscar and Victor Moses all rotated around him – that would suggest that Mata could be benched for the visit of Rangers. However, with Victor Moses and Mikel set to leave for the African Cup of Nations, it would seem likely that Benitez will recall that pair for Wednesday’s game, while Oscar was also only given 6 minutes of action at Goodison. That would perhaps make Eden Hazard more vulnerable, with Moses or Oscar taking his role out wide, though it remains to be seen if Benitez will gamble on facing Harry Redknapp’s side without both Hazard and Mata.

Luiz Cementing Midfield Role
Significantly, Rafa Benitez opted to leave Mikel on the bench at Everton, restoring Ramires to his midfield and keeping David Luiz in a midfield pairing with the recalled Frank Lampard. Luiz was at his combative best, earning a sixth booking of the season but there can also be no doubt that he does offer some attacking menace in this advanced role, while he’s also added himself to the pecking order at direct free-kicks. With Mikel set to depart for African Cup of Nations duty after Chelsea’s FA Cup tie, Luiz would seem well placed to retain the midfield role for fixtures against Stoke, Arsenal, Reading and Newcastle. Three of that four are away from home, but, while clean sheets could be difficult to earn, Luiz will at least offer the chance of attacking points. A full 0.5 cheaper than Branislav Ivanovic and with just 4% ownership, Luiz looks a decent January wildcard consideration.

Turnbull Set For R’s Start
We could be offered a decent budget option in the Chelsea goal for Gameweek 21, with Ross Turnbull, priced at just 4.3 in the FPL, set to start in the absence of the injured Petr Cech. Chelsea’s number one was withdrawn at half-time at Goodison after suffering “a strained adductor muscle at the top of his leg” and will be a doubt for the quick turnaround in fixtures. Rafa brought us this post-match on Cech’s situation…

“He felt something. We have to wait, but obviously we didn’t want to take any risk…We’ll have to do a scan and see…These things depend on the doctors.”

Benitez also confirmed that the QPR game would likely come too soon for John Terry.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

His place in the side long term depends on the future of Ba imo.

If Ba leaves I reckon it might be a 4-3-3 with Marveaux Cisse HBA as the front 3

As I currently own both Bale and Michu, what would you do if Michu is ruled out vs Villa? If I went 4-3-3 it would be:
    Walcott Sessegnon Sterling
    Ba RVP Berbatov

It's looking like Fellaini in for either Michu or Bale, but which would you sell?

If Michu is out then his 2 games before the last opportunity to wildcard are Everton and Stoke; not easy fixtures. Bale has QPR first then can be easily switched to the likes of Cazorla for the double if you're so inclined.

    B) Marveaux + Gibbs + Luiz

Depends if you'd have a clear bench option. A) sounds better in isolation but not if your front 8 is so strong that you'll be benching points every week.

But then the fixtures after he hasn't a high chance of cleanies. I might just downgrade Enrique to a 4m defender and upgrade my mid / strikers or swap him out for Walker / Vertonghen.

The supposed next 2 transfer I'm going to do is Gibbs and Podolski for DGW.
But since Davies is likely to have his price increase soon and I want him for my WC team I'd probably take him.
3 transfer in 2 weeks so one of them would take a hit.

I reckon since Gibbs price increase is practically here, I rather take him in for a hit now.

Or I can take Davies in which has higher probability to CS.

    Begovic
    Rafael Davies demel (cueller Enrique)
    Tarabt sterling Walcott michu (bale)
    Rvp berbs Suarez

If doesn't play, my mid is looking very weak for this week so what would you recommend
A: tarabt >> brunt...will take out Enrique next week
    B: tarabt + Enrique >> fellaini + sagna
C: tarabt + Enrique >> fellaini + Hughes...this will leave me with funds to do sterling > Nolan next week
D: bale >> fellaini and next week do tarabt + Enrique > bale + sagna

I am leaning towards either C or D but the only problem with D is that I waste a FT by selling bale and then buying him back

after a lot of debating decided against doing bale >mata last night
rafa's keen on his rotation and if he keeps up that policy it'll be
the spaniard sitting the next one out,
he'll be pretty confident that the others can see off qpr watching the game yesterday
mata will play the cup game at the weekend imo , (saints away)
chelsea will want the silverware and will play their best team in that one
with the mata price rise last night theres no going back for me

Played safe this GW and had a nightmare with 6 of my squad not playing!

Wish I’d followed my gut instinct and done Bale for Walcott for -4- but now done it for GW21.

Would really appreciate your thoughts on the following:

    GW21 Kacaniclic > Mata, Tevez > Carlton Cole (-8)

    GW22 Gera > Fellani, Silva > Bale, Glenn Johnson > Gibbs (-8)

    GW23 Bale> Carzola

Giving 5 playing double games and attack of

    Michu, Mata, Fellani, Carzola, Walcott

    RVP, Berb, Cole

    or just

    GW21 Kacaniclic > Fellani (-4)

    GW22 Tevez > Carlton Cole

    GW23 Gera >Carzola

Giving (for a hit of -12 points less) 4 playing double games and:

    Michu, Fellani, Carzola, Walcott, Silva

    RVP, Berb, Cole

    My current, light defence is:

    Begovic (Federici)
    Gibbs, Demel, Clyne (Cameron, Nelson)

    0FT £1.5 in bank

Is it worth doing Nelson -> Azp for a hit?

Demel will start as McCartney at left back is out mid to long term so O'Brien is playing there. Collins is suspended tomoro so Tomkins will play there, leaving right back free. Clyne was just rested the other day so is ok.

As for long term, i think the fact that Demel is trusted right back and O'Brien has been moved to left back to cover McCartney whilst he is injured probably means that Demel is first choice right back if he can stay fit.

No. Gibbs is fine, Demel will play, and Clyne at home could easily be involved in a goal so it’s not worth the hit.

      Mine is not dissimilar:
      Foster (Bego)
      Sagna, Demel, Skrtel (Simpson, Cameron)

….and the dust settles over what was even by FPL terms an amazing GW.
I was head in hands until injury time on Sat’s 3pm kick offs and then suddenly at the end of Sunday I have 69 pts and into the top 30k.

    Funny old game eh.

Anyway quandary for next week. Fix injuries/suspensions with hits or accept it might be a bad week and just build to the DGW.

    Foster
    Baines – Wilkinson – Clark
    Walcott – Michu* – Sterling – Punch
    RVP – Suarez – Berbs

    Bego – Shorey – Enrique – Bale

    1FT & 1m to spend.
    Possibilities:
    Bale > Mata
    Wilkinson > O’Brien
    Enrique > Gibbs

Team linked if anyone is kind enough to have a think.
    Thanks.

Guy Demel must be the most talked about £4m defender for an average team ever. Only 6.8% ownership but he's on everyone's lips almost every week! What a ledge!

Is HBA worth a WC punt? Most of the heavy-hitting midfielders are rising out of my price range so I need to go for some midfield differentials instead...

Perhaps. If Ba leaves then Pardew might revert to 4-3-3 which should increase HBA's attacking gains.

Chelsea play stoke the following week :/

Discounting the Villa match Hazard hasn't done much recently? For a one week punt (if you feel that Mata might be rested) then Lamps/Oscar or Ramires could be well worth it against a woeful QPR.

      Lamps - age 34 & 90 mins last game v
      Oscar 21 & 6 mins v
      Ramires 25 & 90 mins

Lamps is so tempting; 3 goals in last 3 starts, just one short of Kerry Dixon's 193 strikes in the club's all-time goal-scoring standings and at 34 needs to be playing regularly. He's basically playing for his future whether that is at Chelsea or elsewhere remains to be seen!

        Defender off the bench.

Can't sell Michu, I had for 6.5m at beginning of the season. Too much value there, only reason to sell if he was out for 4 weeks plus.
