Abounding in every kitchen, but an unsatisfactory meal in themselves: budget defenders are the condiments of the Fantasy football feast. Only earning a place at the table if they marry with the main course, for every ketchup there’s a forgotten chutney, peacefully gathering mould in the dusty recesses of the cupboard. With few Fantasy managers ambitious of employing their free transfers to chop and change the cheapies that no longer cut the mustard, and fewer still prepared to pay points to preserve themselves from such pickles, Winter Wildcard season affords a welcome window to clear the shelves and stock up afresh for the closing months of the campaign:

Boasting both long term promise and short term appeal, Swansea’s Ben Davies stakes a claim as the most appetising option in the budget bracket at present. Promoted to the starting line up in the wake of Neil Taylor’s broken leg on September 1, the young Welshman has ably fended off competition from emergency signing Dwight Tiendalli to make the left-back berth his own. Initially priced at just 4.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a cool million less than the rest of the Swansea rearguard, Davies has emerged as the obvious choice for those keen to tap into the clean sheets on offer from Michael Laudrup’s side.

Swansea sit joint seventh in the Premier League in terms of clean sheets, and fifth in terms of fewest goals conceded – on both counts that’s comfortably ahead of Manchester United, and crucially it’s a better defensive record than the other teams with budget defenders on offer. Of players with an initial price of 4.0 in the FPL, Davies currently sits third in terms of total points on 56, with only the potentially Canada-bound Ryan Nelsen and the hamstrung Hammer Joey O’Brien ahead of him. Even if Nelsen stays at Loftus Road and O’Brien quickly recovers, the Swans’ fixture list should afford Davies the chance to challenge for the top spot over the coming weeks.

Stoke arrive at the Liberty on Saturday in uncharacteristically shaky form, having shipped 10 goals in their last three games and failed to find the net away from the Britannia since December 1. Following that are trips to Sunderland and West Ham – both of whom boast an underwhelming tally of just 24 goals for the season thus far. As the spring approaches the Swans host strugglers QPR and Newcastle, with a testing trip to Anfield tucked in between.

Priced at just 4.2 in the FPL (3.6 in the Sky Sports game) Fantasy managers are likely to have few qualms about playing Davies at home and benching him for tricky away trips but it’s worth noting that the Swans backline has been breached just twice in their last five away games. Indeed, a total of nine goals against outside of the Liberty is the joint-best away defence along with Arsenal. With fullbacks afforded license to roam in Laudrup’s system, those who opt for a home-only schedule over the short-term (STK, QPR, NEW) should provide Davies good chances to augment his haul of two assists and reap returns at both ends of the pitch.

That's not the point. City need to do that to get around financial fair play. From my understanding, that doesn't affect teams that aren't going to qualify for the champions league. If QPR get relegated, then the owners are going to have to fund a HUGE loss and I wouldn't rely on the players that they will be left with to get them promoted.

Who would you have along RVP for the medium or long term?

    A. Suarez (0.3m left)

Suarez. Simply because he's the best striker there, he's guaranteed first name on the teamsheet, scores against anyone. Sturridge will flatter to deceive, scores one in four chances and may start tight games on the bench and be used dynamically. Berb will come good but only as third of a three pronged attack. Ba, with the dodgy knee, the rotation and Rafa's love of all things Torres I'd steer clear of long term.

Brendan Rodgers has made it clear that he wants to play Sturridge through the middle. That doesn't mean Sturridge is now essential and FPL gold but I think it will significant lot den Suarez's potential. He may still score goals but I don't think he'll score enough to justify 10+m

Suarez assist production should go up. With the amount of chances Suarez creates, he really should have more than 3 assists at this stage.

For me, the question is whether the increased in assists will compensate for the potential drop in goals.

Still not totally convinced by Sturridge as a central striker, he naturally pushes himself out to the flanks (old style inside forward) and may actually help add to Suarez's hauls in terms of assists. Suarez is so often isolated yet still scores consistently. Just because BR calls him a centre forward doesn't mean he is one. Yet.

You are correct on Sturridge but it's best IMO to not be getting Suarez in right now with fixtures and uncertainty clouding the issue. 10.4 is a lot to put into someone without knowing really what you might get back. Reassess for GW26 to see what's what.

I have Ba right now, and got him in at 8.2, but am thinking of ditching him for Sturridge who is cheaper and has common fpl potential imo or I could go with a big hitter and racist proven fpl asset in Suarez. I will see how Ba, Sturridge and Suarez perform before my WC. Thanks for the input.

China, I couldnt help laughing at your post above. Even at full strength without injuries and without Ba, Newcastle would be challenging for 6th-7th tops imo.

Cisse seems to have been a one-hit wonder, and has forgotten how to score. You guys have no attacking power what so ever. Like you said earlier in the year, Tiote has not been the same since injury, and you guys look woeful at the back.

Not trying to talk the toon down but that's just harsh reality imo. I reckon you'll stay up though.

+1. The top 4 comment killed me.

Although Cisse is definitely not a one hit wonder.I saw a brilliant run he made in behind the defence against Norwich where the ball wasn't played over the top for him because the player on the ball had no quality in terms of passing and vision (can't remember who). Aside from that, he's spent most the season out on the wing and at the moment the team in general aren't shifting their weight to give him chances. He still knows how to make the movements and how to finish.

to be fair, injuries to cabaye and barfa cost them some creativity. Plus, i am not sure how many times they were able to field their first choice defenders together this season (simps, saylor, colo, santon). Top 4 was probably too optimistic, but 5-7th placing is certainly not out of reach.

And lets not forget Pardew is being found out.

Does it at every club has a honeymoon period and gets all the plaudits before being found out and shown for the mug he is.

Maybe as a Charlton fan I'm biased but at least he's not being considered the messiah anymore after a very poor season. I almost feel sorry for Newcastle stuck with him for 8 years. There's no way he making it to the end of the contract thought, which just means he's going to get a big payoff which also winds me up.

Either way I said all last year the success wouldn't last with Pardew at the helm and all I got was grief from people saying I don't know what I'm talking about. It won't be long until he starts shifting blame to everyone but himself.

I don't hold anything against Newcastle the club, but if you were ever to visit the Valley you'd get pretty much universal hatred of the man who left our club in such a state we were stuck in League 1 for 3 years. Classless man (pushing the linesman, countless spats with some of the most respected managers, Fergie/Wenger etc., the 'rape' incident on MOTD and more) who could very well see you relegated this season if you lose Colocinni and don't get in ample replacements.

Note I said we could be challenging for "4th spot". Not top 4. The top 3 are out of site. But 4th spot is wide open. If Everton are challenging for it, why couldn't a full strength newcastle? Note that presumes a return to form of Cisse. But I don't see why he wouldn't.

      Krul
      Santon
      Colo
      Saylor
      Debuchy
      Cabeye
      Barfa
      Cisse

Are all good enough to get in the first team squads of any of the teams challenging for the 4th spot (spurs, arsenal, everton). Many would get in the first team. I think we will soon be able to add anita to that number, and hopefully tiote if he remembers how to play football while in africa. Add in whichever new forward that we buy, and you have 11 players good enough for 4th spot. So why can't we challenge?

NB I know that our squad isn't as good as the likes of spurs, but after the first 11, its similar to everton, who everyone accepts are challenging for 4th spot.

Ya but Everton are having a "Newcastle" season like last year. When all's said and done, I always think Arsenal, Spurs will claim that spot. But like I said, possibly 5th-7th -- if you guys are consistent and injury-free.

OK. You can have that. But do you agree that if everton can be considered as contenders for 4th spot, then a full strength newcastle could be too? Spurs and arsenals squads are much stronger, so yes, they are most likely to be challenging for 4th spot.

Personally for me, top 4 is out of the question --for both Everton and Toon. But if you guys have a really really consistent season then 5th is a possibility. Thats my take on it.

Top 4 will always be: United, City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool(if Rodgers can fix em up)

IF we had seized the moment in the summer, and spent the 15-20 million that was required to get the squad up to scratch, then we could have been challengers. We didn't though, and so lost all momentum from last season. So it will probably be a while before we can really challenge for 4th spot again!

This season is a right off due to injuries. What we were originally looking at was the potential of Newcastle v QPR. Next season we will be challenging for 4th-8th position. QPR would consider it a success if they scraped into the top half.

Absolutely. The powers that be messed up majorly in the summer by banking on a) we would avoid too many injuries, b) our youngsters were ready to step up. They were massively wrong on both counts. Hopefully they realize this now. They have to spend now on improving the squad, otherwise we would be in serious danger of relgation

Decent shout, I'm getting him in this week for Luiz. Will probably end up keeping then, going him with Zabaleta and three cheap defenders.

Then I'll upgrade Sterling to Fellaini in my midfield. Not sure on Puncheon yet, may swap for another budget option.

Up-front, looking to replace Berbatov but not sure who for. If I've the cash then Sturridge, with Suarez replaced by Aguero.

Hey Pepin, watched Jack Reacher in the cinema last night, was OK, a few cheap laughs, and decent story line, but it wasn't earth shattering...

        You seen it?

          Have you read the books?

Why cast the midget that is Tom Cruise as a guy who's meant to be like 6'6"? 🙄

    Good evening.
Just looking ahead at potential fixture congestion through February and am thinking a big front eight could be the way to go -- many teams with top scorers have crowded schedules with Cups and/or Europe beckoning so rotation could be significant. Am on WC and might go from the seven no brainers and one value player set-up to eight elite attackers with value defenders instead and just hope squad selection works out.
    Michu Fellaini x x x
    RVP x x
And fill in the x's with Che Tot Ars Liv Mci studs, assuming rotation might not leave me with too many points on the bench.
    Anyone else of this mind?

Front 8? Can only play 5-3-2 or 4-4-2 or 3-4-3

Not a Fan of the "BIG 5" 3 strikers seem the way to go and also gives you the Who to bench everyweek

Trying to get both, actually. Running out Puncheon or Ruiz is nice but am wondering if I'm missing out on more.

Right -- would have eight elite attackers in the team, and would be picking -- hopefully -- the right seven each gw since rotation might mean not all are available due to crowded schedules.

You know when you haven't eaten a certain thing in ages and then you eat it again after ages and it's so nice that you kick yourself that you haven't eaten it in ages?

I just had a big juicy corn-on-the-cob with loads of "real" butter melted over it. yum
