Abounding in every kitchen, but an unsatisfactory meal in themselves: budget defenders are the condiments of the Fantasy football feast. Only earning a place at the table if they marry with the main course, for every ketchup thereโ€™s a forgotten chutney, peacefully gathering mould in the dusty recesses of the cupboard. With few Fantasy managers ambitious of employing their free transfers to chop and change the cheapies that no longer cut the mustard, and fewer still prepared to pay points to preserve themselves from such pickles, Winter Wildcard season affords a welcome window to clear the shelves and stock up afresh for the closing months of the campaign:

Boasting both long term promise and short term appeal, Swanseaโ€™s Ben Davies stakes a claim as the most appetising option in the budget bracket at present. Promoted to the starting line up in the wake of Neil Taylorโ€™s broken leg on September 1, the young Welshman has ably fended off competition from emergency signing Dwight Tiendalli to make the left-back berth his own. Initially priced at just 4.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a cool million less than the rest of the Swansea rearguard, Davies has emerged as the obvious choice for those keen to tap into the clean sheets on offer from Michael Laudrupโ€™s side.

Swansea sit joint seventh in the Premier League in terms of clean sheets, and fifth in terms of fewest goals conceded โ€“ on both counts thatโ€™s comfortably ahead of Manchester United, and crucially itโ€™s a better defensive record than the other teams with budget defenders on offer. Of players with an initial price of 4.0 in the FPL, Davies currently sits third in terms of total points on 56, with only the potentially Canada-bound Ryan Nelsen and the hamstrung Hammer Joey Oโ€™Brien ahead of him. Even if Nelsen stays at Loftus Road and Oโ€™Brien quickly recovers, the Swansโ€™ fixture list should afford Davies the chance to challenge for the top spot over the coming weeks.

Stoke arrive at the Liberty on Saturday in uncharacteristically shaky form, having shipped 10 goals in their last three games and failed to find the net away from the Britannia since December 1. Following that are trips to Sunderland and West Ham โ€“ both of whom boast an underwhelming tally of just 24 goals for the season thus far. As the spring approaches the Swans host strugglers QPR and Newcastle, with a testing trip to Anfield tucked in between.

Priced at just 4.2 in the FPL (3.6 in the Sky Sports game) Fantasy managers are likely to have few qualms about playing Davies at home and benching him for tricky away trips but itโ€™s worth noting that the Swans backline has been breached just twice in their last five away games. Indeed, a total of nine goals against outside of the Liberty is the joint-best away defence along with Arsenal. With fullbacks afforded license to roam in Laudrupโ€™s system, those who opt for a home-only schedule over the short-term (STK, QPR, NEW) should provide Davies good chances to augment his haul of two assists and reap returns at both ends of the pitch.

For any of thos playing your WC this week, are you not afraid of the lack of price rises due to such a short break between games. ie. a lot more people won't be doing transfers till the day of or day before.

    Current Team:

    Mig (Cerny)
    Luiz Gibbs Demel Davies Harte
    Walcott Michu Mata Fellaini Bale
    RVP Suarez Pog

Looking at a couple different options for how to proceed after these DW's, and also grateful for any advice:
    A) Keep as is
    B) Go with Baines and 4 low cost defenders
    C) Gibbs down to another low cost defender and Suarez to Aguero (meaning Luiz or comparable cost guy and 4 low cost defenders
    D) Suarez to Sturridge, Luiz to Baines, Gibbs to Evra, so I'd have Baines, Evra, and 3 low cost defenders but Sturridge now as my 2nd forward
    E) Write in options haha

Thanks in advance for any help

too heavy in DF, even if you got Bego cheap. 2 big defenders tops. I think Arsenal are the worst bet between City, Chelsea & Arsenal, so if you're willing to put up with some infrequent rotation, I'd say Gibbs to Davies, Cesar to Federici/bunn, and upgrade up front.

How is this looking for a WC team from next week onwards:

    Sir Chesney - 3.9
    Nasty - Davies - Demel - Wilson - Mariappa
    Michu - Bale - Fell - Mata - Walcott
    RVP - Aguero - Pog

    Bank: 0.2

Obviously it's a weak DF, but does the 'power 5' in MF plus RVP & Aguero justify it? Also would you make any changes?

Just because those 5 players are all playing basically in the hole or upfront and all are below 10m. So when you consider that they are classed as MFers (so 5pts for a goal plus cleanie pts) it makes them all highly attractive propositions.

Things might change soon though. Should one of them get injured or lose form massively then it's easy to do

I like having 5 midfielders because I feel there are better options right now in midfield than up top...this could easily change over the next few weeks, but playing 3-5-2 is perfectly viable.

I think people get a bit ticked off because the Power 5 is Michu, Fellaini, Walcott, Bale, and Mata and excludes certain other players that people may be sensitive about... ๐Ÿ˜‰

that'd be high on the list of reasons for me if I go that way. One of my decision-making goals/criteria this year has been to minimize regret. Largely that's meant sticking with players who's stats are good and not avoiding bandwagons like a stubborn fool (surprisingly those two rules have rarely conflicted). The power 5 is appealing because it also minimizes regret, though I do think it ultimately leaves me less flexible (gerrard is the only straight swap if something happens, maybe silva... whereas forward have lots of good options).

I have a low team value (105.5) though, w/ Lukaku/RVP/Dzeko up top, so I can't afford to have another Suarez/Aguero level striker unless I downgrade Lukaku. Sad, I know.

I'm captaining Cazorla. I get that Walcott had one outstanding game, but for so much of the season he's looked fairly poor. Take away "the game" (which i know isn't really fair, but just for perspective) and he's level on points with the Romeo Lukaku, Anthony Pilkington, Sebastian Bassong crowd. Who knows, he may be explosive again and score a zillion points. Just too inconsistent for me.

Easy. Top 10 forward who has acheived Top 10 points on limited minutes. Hence if he gets even 120-150 minutes then in theory returns should be strong. Both Chelsea and Wham are liable to conceed and Pod will also be on Pens to benefit from Walcott and Caz trickery. He is a very sensible and simple pick for me.

Regression plus Swansea are too defensive away from home to create many chances and then he has been quite lucky this season to pounce on so many unforced errors. But if he continues up front there is of course a huge risk in avoiding him.

Exactly he's been awfully lucky so far this season and is now beginning to hit the post etc. His luck is changing ๐Ÿ˜‰

Considering I'm not losing much value on him it's a risk worth taking to leave him out.

Taken off set pieces mainly and suffering from fatigue I think. He's played every single game for Arsenal so far.

However another way of looking at it is between GW16-GW20 he scored 37 points which was his most productive run of the season in FPL and the best time to own him so it's not bad. Plus he scored a hat-trick. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Begovic
    demel davies rafael (luiz cueller)
    michu fellaini bale walcott(c) (sterling)
    berbs rvp ba

    have 1Ft and 0.8m ITB.

    A: sterling + ba >> nolan + podolski
    B: sterling + luiz >> gibbs + nolan
    C: luiz + berbs >> gibbs + podolski
    D: mannone + ba >> sczenscny + podolski

am going to WC in gw24 so these are all 1 week moves…

my current defense is: begovic rafael demel davies (luiz cueller)….ideally i want to A, but since i dont expect either begovic or rafael/luiz to keep a clean sheet, B or D makes more sense

    thoughts?

OK guys, here's my little* introductory piece to this year's UCL & Europa League from a Bayern perspective... Enjoy...

    *not so little... ๐Ÿ˜‰

After an extremely difficult, and somewhat forgettable, first season in charge of the most successful Bundesliga side in history, Zep Guardiola has endured more hardships than many an illustrious manager over the last 6 months.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that, in light of his recent failings, Guardiola would have 'upped sticks' and abandoned his post under such circumstances which left Bayern languished in 15th position and on the brink of humiliating relegation.

    Not a chance.

On last season's unsatisfactory efforts, Guardiola had this to say: "We did everything we could, but we failed. We could not get it right in the key moments, and these things are costly. Now, we will have to recover and think about the next season. The only thing we can do is congratulate the teams above us, but we'll be back next year."

A new season, a new team and a renewed team spirit brings with it a new opportunity, however, and a recent surge in form has brought about a mini revival...

With Guardiola under-playing his team’s chances, perhaps the mind games have already started, "I can't promise titles but I am convinced that the fans will be proud of us, I give you my word that we will put in the effort. I don't know if we'll win, but we'll persist. Put on your seat belts, because we're going to have fun."

After a quiet word in his ear though, I can assure you that, despite his realism, Guardiola is quietly confident that Bayern will be back with a bang this year.

Last season's efforts did not go unnoticed. In light of Bayern's superior position in the Fair Play league, recent UEFA sanctions have afforded Zep the chance to once again rub shoulders with Europe’s finest, even if his league finish didn't merit it. It's unsure whether they will be in the CL or Europa Cup, but regardless of which competition they are in, Zep will be absolutely delighted to be a part of it.

It has been reported that Zep and his players took to the town in light of this recent news to celebrate their inclusion during their week off. Having caught Zep off guard (no pun intended) with his fly down coming out of a busy city bar, he did his best to retain his composure, and with some gusto parted with these inspiring words,

"Esta es una noticia absolutamente genial, increíble... tan inesperado... Vamos, el Bayern!"
