A superb second-half comeback from Southampton stuns Stamford Bridge and denies Rafa Benitez a much-needed home win. Demba Ba notches a first league goal for the Blues, while strikes for Rickie Lambert and Jason Puncheon ensure that Gameweek 22’s double was a profitable one. With the FA Cup replays covered in the Scout Notes to follow, here’s the Stock Check on tonight’s league action…

On the Up

Demba Ba
The talk before the game was that the Senegalese striker was unlikely to start two matches in the space of four days but, by naming him in the lineup ahead of Fernando Torres, there is perhaps already a pecking order forming. Ba duly took just 25 minutes to again show his quality with a first league strike for his new club. Ba owners will, however, be concerned on possible rotation ahead of the visit of Arsenal and it’s likely that, week-to-week, that threat will remain with Torres waiting in the wings.

Eden Hazard
The Belgian timed a return to form perfectly to reward double Gameweek investors, scoring for the second consecutive match to take him to six goals for the season. With a seven-point return before bonus, Hazard matched the much-fancied Juan Mata in the Gameweek, despite the Spaniard’s hat-trick of assists at Stoke.

César Azpilicueta
The decision to rest Branislav Ivanovic to the bench and retain the Spaniard at right-back could be seen as a huge vote of confidence. While Ivanovic was perhaps due a break, Azpilicueta has now started the last six and 11 of the last 12 league outings. Keep the role for the visit of Arsenal and we can start to consider him as Rafa Bentiez’s first choice for that position, with Ivanovic perhaps destined to compete for the central defensive roles.

Rickie Lambert
Thirteen consecutive league starts came to an end as Nigel Adkins opted to stat with Guly Do Prado in his side, presumably feeling that Lambert needed to rest his legs for the home clash with Everton. Once again, however, he was not to be denied, cracking his second strike of the Gameweek to repay those who showed faith in the Saints’ hitman. With ten goals for the season, Lambert goes on presenting superb value for his modest price tag.

Jason Puncheon
A first goal in six league starts was worth the wait as the Southampton winger silenced the Chelsea fans with a strike of real quality. Like Lambert, Puncheon remains a hugely popular choice at the budget end of the market and, with doubts mounting on Raheem Sterling’s security of start for Liverpool, tonight’s goal will have boosted Puncheon further in the minds of potential suitors searching for a fifth midfielder in their January wildcard selections.

Nathaniel Clyne
The right-back completes Southampton’s trio of strong budget options having returned his third assist of the season in tonight’s game. With Luke Shaw also impressing on the left flank, Nigel Adkins’ side have two 4.0 options that appear to present an attacking intent that warrants interest.

Going Down

Branislav Ivanovic
We can’t be hasty and start to question Ivanovic’s security of start just yet – particularly given the fact that the Serb has started the last 14 competitive matches for the Blues. He was due a rest at some point and Rafa’s decision could be made with the visit of Arsenal in mind. However, having made glaring errors in the recent Capital One Cup tie, Ivanovic owners are suddenly fidgeting at the prospect of the 7.1 valued defender slipping down the pecking order and competing with the likes of Gary Cahill, John Terry and David Luiz for a central defensive role.

Fernando Torres
Does Rafa’s decision to start with Ba once again suggest that, already, the Senegalese striker is in the driving seat for the centre-forward role? The weekend clash with Arsenal will tell us more. Should Torres find himself benched again, it will indicate a pecking order has been established.

David Luiz
Back in defence for the second match running, Luiz owners will now be concerned that Rafa has cooled on the idea of deploying the Brazilian in a midfield role. John Terry’s likely return is set to add to the completion for starts at the back and with Luiz having started the last seven, there will be concern that a rest is also on the horizon.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ok I went a bit overboard on the whole Chamakh comparison.. or did I? Both scored well in the french league. Got starts.. then faded into darkness. Sounds a lot like a deja vu to me.

Chamakh's final year for Bordeaux - 10 goals

Giroud's final year for Montepellier - 21 goals and led Montpellier Ligue 1 title

Chamakh currently can't even get into the Moroccan team; Oli is a regular for Les Bleus, 2nd only to Benzema (of course) in the pecking order.

Chamakh easily loses his confidence when he gets benched or loses form; Giroud worked his tail off to go from playing in Ligue 2 3 years ago to finally playing for one of the biggest clubs in the PL. Oli's work ethic is insane.

i know mata is everybodys darling around here, but having had both mata and hazard for the dgw, and originally planned to move in caz for haz for the next dgw, i am now tempted to keep hazard instead as a modest differential for the gws ahead. 'what do you think?

Mata is an annoying player to own. Just when you think Mata is doing well Hazard goes and outscores him!

I'd keep Hazard if I had to choose between the two of them. He seems to have a knack for biting me in the ass whenever I don't have him.

I tried liking him, I really did (we're both Gunners fans btw). He's just too immobile for a fast paced game like the EPL. French league was slower paced, build up, etc. EPL you have to be able to counter and take your chances.

But I agree on your prediction of PT Ryan.

It will work. Arsenal's style alone is effective in breaking down any team. Although both games will be a low scoring imo. Terry's return will help Chelsea's defense and the Hammers can be tight when they want to be.

Just remembered the way they tore up Reading with Theo's pace up top which allowed Caz the space to get a hattie.

If you have Mata or Haz and you won't lose too much ££ on Ba I'd say take a punt. Can sense that you want to despite what BB is doing.

I don't think I wanna lose Ba for Pod anymore. firstly I got Ba at 7.7 and prob won't be able to bring him back if it turns out that Torres is being sent to the horse farm. Secondly I just saw his stats over the last 8 GWs and they are not good(underlining stats).

Bale to ->Santi looks ugly on paper. Santi seems tired and isn't taking anywhere near as many shots on goal anymore. I'm not really sure what to do because both DGW have produced the goods and those who invested heavily made out great. Anyone looking at double Arsenal defense?

I'm keeping ba. I think it's a good time to save a transfer with al the variables coming. Ie Sturbridge and aguero. I don't fancy pod enough to ditch ba just yet.

      Same dilemma as well.

I don't want to give up either Mata or Bale to get Santi in.

I lose tremendous value on Ba (got him at 7.5) if I get in Podolski; I may want Ba back if he ends up as 1st choice for Rafa.

If you're looking at Arsenal double D, I suggest Chezny and Gibbs.

ugh just 0.1 short of bego -> Chezny. I was looking at Azp -> Sag as I was gonna bench him anyways for Davies. I think its either that or I save this week. Too risky to cut Ba now when we don't know how much rotation he'll face + Pod will prob see 120 mins total in the DGW

No one is really in form apart form Walcott, Gibbs and err O'Brian. It would be tempting to not bother getting any more DGWer's and plan beyond one GW. If wildcarding afterwards though I think the potential upside of Caz is too hard to ignore.

Over the last 5 GW to say that Santi's goal threat has been abject is putting it midly. Bale has Man U at home which isn't a great fixture but could easily bag a goal vs our leaky defense. Santi HAS to be due a rest at some point and it could come next week which would make that move a little too risky for me right now.

I think I'll do it (of course not until deadline). It's for a free here. I think Ba has a decent chance of scoring well this weekend, if he starts, but Podolsk is just rested and has two games. Really the only way for me to get more cover, unless I want to do Luiz -> Gibbs but then I'd have to bench Davies with the game of his life (STK).
