634x258 The Stock Check

Strikes from Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor are not enough as the Baggies boing back to rescue a point in midlands derby clash. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s evening kick-off…

On the Up

Christian Benteke
A superb turn and an exocet shot that arrowed into Ben Foster’s net, handed Benteke his seventh goal of the season. The Belgian continues to be Paul Lambert’s key player and the sole Fantasy temptation in the Villa squad. With the Newcastle failing back four up next, Benteke’s chances of scoring back-to-back goals looks enticing.

Charles N’Zogbia
A former Fantasy favourite, at times in the first half, the former Latics winger sparkled and showed glimpses of talent that once made him a serious proposition. A brace of assists will immediately re-introduce him to the radar and, having made just his fourth start of the season, N’Zogbia he could yet emerge as a mid-price prospect in a Villa midfield that’s been bereft of Fantasy options.

Chris Brunt
Rather like the Norwich midfield assets, it appears that Brunt has been on a see-saw with James Morrsion as the main source of points for the Baggies in the middle of the park. A second goal in five games promotes Brunt’s stock this time around and arguably helps to oust Morrison as the primary target in Steve Clarke’s midfield.

Going Down

The West Brom Defence
With Gareth McAuley owned by over 8% of Fantasy Premier League managers and Ben Foster claiming over 6%, the Baggies rearguard goes on disappointing. Having started the season with three shut-outs in the opening five fixtures, Clarke’s side have gone six without defensive returns, conceding more than a single goal in their last four. It’s one clean sheet in 13 league outings, although McAuley’s assist for Odemwingie’s equaliser will sweeten that pill for tonight at least.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Wasn't really expecting anything from today to be fair, no shots on target is a bit grim though. We just need a win soon to get things moving again or else i fear we could be in trouble. Hopefully it'll be West Ham next week.

In need of some serious surgery over the next couple of weeks to match all the WC’s and to match how teams forms have changed.

    Currently
Szez, (Federici)- fine for now me thinks,

Gibbs, Martin, Clark, Demel, Cole, ( need to downgrade Cole 6.5 to upgrade elsewhere)

Mata, Walcott, Fellaini, Ramirez, Nolan ( need to upgrade Nolan 6.5 )

RvP, Ba, Ruiz.. ( Ruiz needs to be upgraded but he has a decent game next week)

0.0 on the account. Team value not much over 100m
    2 FTs,

I’m thinking Cole could be downgraded – ( Davies, wisdom, other?)

Nolan needs a really solid replacement- ( possibly Michu but days difficultly) any good options for less than 7.5/8? Michu would only work if I bring in a 4m.. To upgrade ruiz
Ruiz needs to go too probably. Might keep for home game v west ham (Remy or someone around 6-6.5)

Every transfer will affect the other transfers..
What would u do with this lot?

Adam johnson could be a good shout for a midfielder in the price range you said. Sunderland have got a long run of good fixtures coming up and hes getting games and is in form or de guzman looked good today for a cheaper route into swansea midfield

I know its not where all the glamour is but the bottom half of the PL is getting pretty tense with Reading/Southampton/QPR picking up points and ourselves, Newcastle, Norwich and West Ham on terrible runs. I can't see Wigan or Villa staying up, the third spot really could be anyone from 6 teams.

+1. Disagree on Villa thought. Agbon, N'Zogbia and Benteke will give them the firepower they've missed for pretty much the whole season. They all looked very sharp today and very pacey. Also Dunne will be back soon which should be a big help and Vlaar had added some much needed experience at the back now too.

I wouldn't discount Wigan either. They always pull it together somehow.

I would say QPR, Reading and Southampton to go.

Maybe I was a bit harsh on Villa and Wigan, noot saying they'll definitely go down but they're in trouble and the others around them have started getting results. This year seems like one of the closest in the bottom half though. Normally there are 3 or 4 teams that look way off the pace.

      Yep it's a proper dangerous 9.

      I'd classify them like this:

Bad attacks: Reading, Fulham, QPR, Norwich, West Ham, Wigan (minus Kone at ACON), Newcastle (until injuries ease)

Bad defences: Newcastle, Norwich (minus Bassong), Wigan, Villa, Fulham

I'd say the ones that fall into both categories are most at threat, that's Newcastle, Norwich, Wigan, Fulham.

I think Villa have the makings of a good team there if they can sort out their heads and drill the defence which did okay in midseason with a bunch of clean sheets. They can attack when they need to.

(Obviously given QPR's league position they are highly favoured for the drop. They could still go down but I think they'll do better than many from this point on, without Hughes in charge . Southampton I can't describe under their new boss, if he screws them up they'll drop)

            Don't ask me! 😆

Honestly though, executive chairman Cortese must've made up his mind at least weeks ago because the new manager said he'd been researching saints that long. Some say Adkins asked for spending in January and that was the last straw.

Will be tough for us, however what was once and eight point gap is 5. That can of course swing, however suddenly quite a number of teams are under pressure. Once teams eg Norwich lose momentum it becomes very difficult. What I'm saying is the teams that have struggled, like us, should we get in the mix may find it easier to make strides.

It's crazy, why not let Adkins stay in charge for the hard fixtures, if they do alright, they could be 5 points clear of the relegation zone. I they lose 3 of 4 then replace him. It would still be a very harsh sacking but there could be some sort of reasoning.

Everything about the decision was just complete madness. Not a drop of sense in any of it. Cortese had better be the new Mourinho or else there's going to be a revolution on the south coast.

I have the same dilemma and was also planning on WCing this week but it's definitely worth waiting. It's been a reasonably quiet window so far so I expect a lot of late moves.

I'd do Cazorla -> Bale/Silva or Suarez -> Aguero and sit tight for one more week.

Haha same. I try not to, but often a lot of my transfers are made with an eye kept on my rivals (one in particular). Making sure he doesn't have a particularity dangerous differential to me or seeing what defensive cover he has. This year more than ever as he's coming to "knock me off my perch".

All of the sides near the bottom are keen on putting the work in to make a good run of results.
          Impossible to predict really.
I would say Southampton will find themselves in deep water very soon.
A really crazy time to sack Adkins. Thev ve been doing ok recently but who knows what kind of effect his termination will have on their morale.

Are the players going to come out fighting with the hard work and spirit that's so important now...? I dont think so.

Southampton, Wigan, Reading going down for me with Villa and possibly even Norwich deep in the scramble too!
