The Magpies unearth a new hero, Daniel Sturridge finds consistency, the “Bale bomb” promises destruction, while an array of Premier League veterans are back in bloom. Here’s the lessons learned from Gameweek 25…

Moussa Sissoko is a handful…
The numbers suggested that Moussa Sissoko would simply provide more muscle to the Newcastle midfield – another combative element alongside Cheick Tiote. While Sissoko’s attacking instincts were clearly curtailed for the majority of his tenure at Toulouse, Alan Pardew has let him off the leash at Newcastle and his impact has been remarkable. The pace and power of Sissoko looks hard to contain and, playing in the advanced role as part of a midfield three behind Papiss Cisse, he looks to be a real threat which could well go on harvesting Fantasy returns. With over 50,000 “transfers in” overnight in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there are already plenty backing Sissoko’s substantial influence to continue.

Daniel Sturridge looks the real deal…
Critisised for inconsistency and a selfish, wasteful streak in front of goal, Sturridge has banished such talk with his early appearances in a Liverpool shirt. Quietly, he’s returned three goals and an assist in his four league appearances under Brendan Rodgers and his performance at City on Sunday was both effective and mature. His ability to lead the Liverpool attack is perhaps bad news for those holding Luis Suarez, who will go on pondering whether Sturridge will dent the Uruguayan’s output in the coming weeks. For those yet to plunder Liverpool’s attacking potential, however, Sturridge has emerged as a clear front runner for double Gameweek acquisition, providing his thigh injury is as minor as we suspect.

Everton still can’t defend…
Having kept back-to-back clean sheets in matches with Swansea and Southampton, David Moyes’ defence was badly exposed by the power and confidence of Villa’s Christian Benteke on Saturday. Leighton Baines did his best to repay his owners and keep his tally ticking with the assist for Marouane Fellaini’s late equaliser but it’s pretty clear that he will need to go on delivering attacking returns to justify his price tag. With a trip to Old Trafford up next and matches with Arsenal and City looming, attack appears to be the best form of defence for Everton and Baines will need to play his part.

The cupboard remains bare in the United midfield…
Wayne Rooney’s decisive strike at Craven Cottage added further fuel to the fire as the Rooney vs Robin Van Persie debate rages on. However, Saturday’s display also underlined just how reliant United have become on their strikers. Both Nani and Antonio Valencia saw pitch time at Fulham and both bitterly disappointed as their miserable campaigns continued. With Shinji Kagawa still settling to the demands of the Premier League, United’s midfield remains bereft of any reliable source of Fantasy talent, giving us little option but to turn to one or both of the United front men to cover their attacking returns for the title run-in.

Bale could make or break us…
Doubts were creeping in as both Theo Walcott and Juan Mata accelerated away from Gareth Bale as prime midfield assets. Sunday’s strike at the Hawthorns gave further indication that Bale is, by some margin, the biggest threat that Spurs have to offer and showed that Fantasy managers should still be examining a way of acquiring Bale’s services or settle on the fact that they will live in fear of explosive returns. Talk of Bale cementing a central midfield role, or even being shifted to a role up front, only compounds matters.

There’s life in the old dog…
Veterans of Fantasy football – perhaps players we had written off – are clearly enjoying a major comeback. Further goals for Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard continued their recent ascent and their consistency is now pushing for inclusion in our squads – not just as differentials, but as strong alternatives to more expensive options such as Luis Suaraz and Juan Mata. In defence we’ve also seen two warhorses restored to the starting lineup and delivering value. Both Jamie Carragher and Michael Dawson were out the cold just over a month ago but have since cemented starting roles are earning plaudits. Once again, Fantasy managers are beginning to take notice and cash in on the potential offered by these assets of a bygone age who appeared to have discovered a new lease of life.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Post dgw, think I'll need to ditch Puncheon to afford my planned transfers unless Gerrard goes banannas and he rises during the blank too.

    So for sub 4.6:

    Townsend or Kebe?

Is this really a proper DGW? Surely a DGW followed by an immediate blank just means you're getting your points a few days early. Other than the captain getting double it's not that bigger deal.

For people with a terrible bench it's no use. For people with a strong bench it's not AS big a deal as the other DGWs so far, but it's definitely a bigger deal than a nomal GW.

I think that he was put into the game maybe a day before he played his first game on the 29th. In that case, if he's price protected 10 days like I have heard, then that's only until this Wednesday or Thursday. Therefore, his price will likely go up before next gameweek when I can get him for free for Michu. (Against Southhamption is more appealing that Spurs anyways). Should I risk the potential price rise or just take the -4 hit and get him now?

The question is, by how much will his price rise Wednesday and Saturday? Will it be a steep increase after the price protected deadline or will it only raise by .1? What's worse a .1 hit or a -4 hit?

Only rise 0.1. 4 point hit much worse. Only take a hit for a transfer like that if you were going to take a hit later anyway or the rise makes him unaffordable.

      GW27 - 12 Players. 3 DGW. No Hits.

I dont see it quite as black and white between the gwks though. I prefer to see it as the fixtures available to the player over a period of time. When viewed this way, all you need to do is attempt to maximise the best fixtures for your players whilst minimising the points hits.

Well spotted. I obviously admire Gerrard as a player and he's proving all the doubters wrong but something still makes me hesitate seeing him the same way I would have in years before. I would fancy him to do well in the DGW and there is a chance I might change my mind and stick him in but I still don't think he is as much of a threat to opposition defences as Mata/Walcott/Bale who are all 'pure' attacking midfielders. I suppose it's the categorisation.

Gerrard's set pieces/pens are a massive selling point...I just am reluctant to believe in him over Sturridge/Suarez. Maybe it's the ownership too, I'm not that scared of him!

Swansea have only scored in one of their last six away games whereas Liverpool have kept a clean sheet in five of their last six home games.

Therefore GW26 is like a single gameweek plus 2 points for Michu. Discuss. (or not, it's up to you).

Well I can see what you mean. I'm not very optimistic either. But neither were people very optimistic about Michu's chances against Arsenal and he scored two. Anything can really happen in football.

On 'paper' yeah it doesn't look too prosperous but like above poster anything can happen in football, maybe not wonderful example but Villa scoring 3 times at Everton with Benteke brace and I doubt his owners were expecting much at all.

IMO Swansea wont go crazy but I think they'll snatch one and of course there's a decent chance Michu will be involved

Looking at the stats on here and the games yesterday it looked to me that Sturridge could be the better option than Suarez regardless of price 😕 ..... Too late to do anything about it for the double, but I may do the downgrade post-DGW depending on how things go in the meantime... Also making me rethink my captain strategy, anyone else like the look of GJ??? Could have easily had a few assists yesterday and surely Pool will keep at least one cleanie?

Suarez is still going to be as much of a threat as he was before he just now has a strike partner accompanying him. Sturridge has done well but I wouldn't judge things based on him scoring and Suarez blanking. Suarez still had six shots which trumped Sturridge's total at least. Over two home games Suarez is going to be a massive threat.

Yeah I guess, but in almost all stats since the Studge move he is at least on a par with Suarez.. I'll probably end up captaining Suarez anyway and he probably will score more over the season, I'm just saying it's something to look out for, and that Sturridge has definitely impacted on his output...

Ha yeah perhaps... I don't like to come accross as though I think it's not a problem in English football but I'd like to think that there is no active involvement on the part of any English club. Has anybody conceded a boatload of goals in the CL at an English club in recent years? Remember Besiktas losing 8-0 at liverpool once but we're probably talking 6-7 years ago for that.

I would presume that it's something as small as a yellow card or something for an individual player, surely the risk of fixing a match result with the amount of attention on the English sides in the CL and amount of people involved is too high?? Not saying it's not worrying though...

Yeah, Demel's blank has made it difficult for me. Just hoping for Wilson's comeback, which is predicted to be GW27. And just hoping Demel returns.. Risky. Way too risky I know..

The maths to back it up is fairly sound, rooney is a decent shoe-in. However, ive got several other more pressing matters transfer wise, which means im sticking.

good decisiont too much uncertainty around him possibly being resedt and tough away game makes it hard to (c) him plus with a possible gw29 blank it makes sense, we will be happy if he gets a 1 pointer on sunday off the bench make up some serious ground!

I really do like it, if you could downgrade Krul and upgrade JDG or Guthrie, it would be really good...

After hovering around 104 TV for a good while pre-xmas to a few weeks ago, nice to see it up to 107 after last night 😀

Sissoko and Sturridge look to be the new Michu and Fellaini in terms of price rises - expect them to rocket 1m + over next few weeks.
