We end our coverage of the Gameweek gone by with an appreciation of Newcastle’s midfield powerhouse, Liverpool’s blossoming form under Brendan Rodgers and a discussion of the dilemma’s faced by Fantasy managers as we prepare our squads for the potential of more double Gameweek profit…

The Player

This was a Gameweek full of contenders and yet Moussa Sissoko’s impact on his arrival in the Premier League cannot be ignored in the light of a two-goal salvo which humbled the Champions League holders.

Sissoko’s presence in the centre of Newcastle’s advanced midfield three was hugely influential in Saturday’s victory – his brace capping a display of controlled power and pace, coupled with a calm assurance and accurate passing that, at times, seamlessly linked Newcastle’s midfield and attack. Alan Pardew may have unearthed a savior for the princely sum of just £1.8 million. Fantasy managers will have to shell out 6.0 to acquire the services of the muscular Frenchman – a bargain of similar proportions if Saturday’s showing is anything to go by.

There are possible caveats to the deal. While Sissoko had shown goal threat in his time at Toulouse, his goal count is that of a player deployed in a holding midfield role – one that he could yet occupy for Alan Pardew’s men. The return of Cheick Tioté and the return to fitness of Hatem Ben Arfa will change the dynamic in the Magpies midfield and Alan Pardew may yet have a selection dilemma in front of him.

That will only really be an issue if Sissoko’s influence begins to waver and the current 4-2-3-1 system shows cracks. Two league starts down, Sissoko is looking every inch a Premier League player and hinting that he could well be the key Fantasy target to emerge from the January window. With almost 60,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers in so far in the Gameweek, faith in Sissoko is already matching the hype his performances have whipped up.

The Team

Liverpool’s display at the Etihad was timely given the double Gameweek scenario. Fantasy managers can surely consider the assets on offer in Brendan Rodgers’ side safe in the knowledge that form and confidence will not be an issue – although consistency may still be a concern, given they came a cropper to Aston Villa on the back of a decent run earlier in the season.

That doubt aside, there is a blossoming cast of talent on tap at Anfield for the Gameweek matches with West Brom and Swansea. As we’ve mentioned in the past 48-hours, the performance of Daniel Sturridge stole the show, although Steven Gerrard’s strike, Stewart Downing’s creativity, the forward forays of both full-backs and the return to prominence of Jamie Carragher, were all notable features of a Liverpool display that put City on the back foot for long periods.

We haven’t even mentioned Luis Suarez in that summary – a player with no less than 17 goals to his name thus far who may or may not take a backseat now that Sturridge is ensconced in the Liverpool forward line. Again, Suarez was found drifting out wide but there was fluidity to his understanding with Sturridge which suggests that his days as a major goal threat are far from over. Sturridge may well be the flavor of the month but Suarez owners won’t yet be concerned that their man is set to disappoint as a result of the new threat the former Chelsea striker offers.

The Talking Point

Liverpool’s ascendency under Brendan Rodgers leads us nicely to consider their assets for the impending double Gameweek. With both Chelsea and Arsenal providing big profits in the previous two instances, Fantasy managers are already preparing in anticipation of a big haul. There is, however, the small factor of the blank for both Swansea and Liverpool that follows immediately after their potential points bonanza – that changes the landscape quite considerably.

Most Fantasy managers will go into Gameweek 26 with two or three Liverpool and Swansea players already recruited. With a free transfer available after Gameweek 26, this allows us to recruit one more double Gameweek player and still navigate our squads through the Gamweek 27 blank with a starting XI – barring any injuries or suspensions of course.

Four double Gameweek players presents the “safe” route then – more than that, and you have to factor in the points hits required to empty your squad in time for Gameweek 27. Take three Liverpool outfielders and both Michu and Ben Davies into Gameweek 26, then, and, while profits could be significant, you need to factor in the four points it will cost to remove two of the five players for Gameweek 27.

Lets look at one typical scenario – Team A has both Ben Davies and Michu, with Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez also recruited. We could now also choose to use our free transfer prior to Gameweek 26 to sign Glen Johnson. However, in order for Johnson to return profit he would have to fetch more than a single clean sheet over his two matches: we have to remember than any returns for the fifth double Gameweek player have to consider the four points required to remove them again for the blank that follows.

If you’re considering a double Gameweek defender over an existing member of your squad who also has a strong Gameweek 26 fixture, you can see how such a move becomes far less attractive.

Of course, attacking returns could more than compensate and, if you’re considering a fifth double Gameweek player as a captain option, then there is extra incentive on offer. However, it’s imperative to consider the points hits that will follow in order to weigh up the merits of the transfer. You also have to be wary of already committing your trade for Gameweek 27 before a ball has been kicked. Get an injury elsewhere in your squad, perhaps to a key player, and your points hit could escalate.

One option, which perhaps has been neglected, is the Pepe Reina route: signing a double Gameweek keeper can offer a way around the “hit” factor. If you’ve an active Gameweek 27 keeper in reserve, you still have three outfield players on your bench to replace other double Gameweek players. This therefore allows the recruitment of five double Gameweek players, which, by using your one free transfer, can give you a full starting eleven for Gameweek 27. Again, this presumes you suffer no injuries or suspensions elsewhere and already commits your Gameweek 27 transfer – a gamble. Pepe Reina’s form, typified by the error that lead to City’s equaliser is also a concern here.

Everyone will have their own approach to this Gameweek, largely shaped by their anticipation of the expected returns on offer. The likes of Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Michu all look attractive packages that could deliver very healthy returns. The Liverpool defence, with two home fixtures, also looks a favourable path to take. However, Fantasy managers should not cast aside the rest of their squad in scrambling for double Gameweek assets – there will be nothing more painful than points on the bench and the failure of a double Gameweek signing, particularly if Gameweek 27 also harbours a points hit in order to get 11 players on the pitch.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    It may be crazy but I'm thinking RVP > Sturridge for DGW, then Sturridge > Rooney the week after. Basically a one week punt on Sturridge over RVP.

      ref....Enrique, or not Enrique: or perhaps Johnson:
      Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
      The slings and arrows of Liverpool’s defending,
      Or to take arms against a Swansea of troubles,
      And by transferring end them? To dream too deep;
      No more; and by a dream to say we score!
      The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
      That double game week brings, ’tis a consummation
      Devoutly to be wish’d. To score a hundred;
      A hundred: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub;
      For in that dream of scores unheard what hits may come
      When we have shuffled off our normal team,
      That gives us pause: there’s the respect
      That makes calamity of our ranks;
      For who would bear the whips and scorns of FFS,
      The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,
      The pangs of despised hits, the bonus point’s delay,
      The insolence of picks and the loss
      of patience merits the unworthy choices,
      That we then inevitably make
      With a bare arse cheek, who would farts appear,
      To grunt and sweat under a weary burden,
      But that the dread of undiscovered injury,
      That dreadful physio’s couch from whose clutch
      No player returns, confounds the will
      And makes us rather bear those ills we have
      Than fly to others that we know not of?
      Thus indecision does make cowards of us all;
      And thus the native hue of resolution
      Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of overthought,
      And enterprises of great pith and moment
      With this regard their currents turn awry,
      And lose the name of action. – Soft you now!
      The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
      Be all my sins remember’d.

    Bego, Bunn
    GJ, DAVIES, Baines, (Harte, Clyne)
    Bale, Mata, Walcott, Fellaini, (Marveaux)
    RVP, SUAREZ, Benteke

    Bego, Bunn
    Cuellar, Baines, Harte, (Davies), (Clyne)
    Bale, Mata, Walcott, Fellaini, (Marveuax)
    RVP, Aguero, Benteke

    Benteke-->Sturridge the week after

    This way I don't loose value on Fellaini by not getting Michu, I think I'll be able to field 11 even if Marveaux doesn't play and get LIV coverage the week after. How does it look to expert community?

          Never mind his point scoring, his actual play has risen to an awesome level. He got off to a slow start, looked out of place in the way Brendan wanted to play. For the last 3 months or so, he`s been incredible, probably the best CM in the league in that period.

              He`s 32 and its normal that his body will tire some and Arsenal have some energic midfielder, i mean Wilshere was immense 2nd half.

              Meh your team will be fine. I suspect Fellaini`s "injury" is the same one he sustained against Villa, and he proceeded to score twice after getting hurt. Luiz, Ba and Berba are offering you some trouble though, i see. I`ve already taken quite the gamble preparing for the dgw myself, excited to see how it goes.

                  Bale/RVP for Gerrard/Suarez. Plan is to do either Gerrard to Bale or Michu to Sissoko, depending on how they perform in the DGW, and get Rooney in for Benteke the gw after that, at home to Norwich i think.

                  I might need to do both of those transfers mentioned first since Demel and Guthrie didnt play the weekend, but i dont mind. GW 27 probs wont be a high scoring one anyway.

                    not really fussed on team value - say this week for example im pretty certain ba is getting sold. but would rather wait on team news and have the time rather then make transfer early.

                    Btw i like your strategy...keep telling myself bale is useless at home and to gerrard myself!

                    Me either, but this week i had to catch the rises if i wanted to see the rest of my plan completed. Only have 0.1 margin, although the players im swapping are due to rise and earn me 0.1 here and 0.1 there, so i`ll be fine. Usually i dont like to transfer until saturday morning.

                    Tbh i wouldnt mind keeping Bale, but i just want Stevie for the double and it would cost 0.5 if i sold Walcott, Bale just costs me 0.1 to retrieve which i`ll earn back from Gerrard anyway. Theyre playing the french revolution as well, who`s to say they might not struggle?

        Yes it would and still fielding 11 (if injury free). But would need to take the hit the week after in order to fund Sturridge. Probably a better option since a lot can happen in the meantime, PL wise.

        I think Liv will get something from Brom but "Not A Lot". Suarez will do well;

        In the Swan game I think Swans will upset the reds with Hernandez Guz being the main players after there backbones being up after taking QPR back to the stone ages.

          Johnno offers a lot more attacking threat, goalwise anyways. Enrique has equal assist potential, i would say,but the man cannot shoot, whilst Johnson can - and often does. Not srue if he`s worth the extra million or whatever it is.

    If you already had Ben Davies, Gerrard & Sturridge, would you rather get Carragher or double up with another Swansea defender, most probably Chico?

          Well i think Carra will play both. Skrtl probably gets a run in against Zenit as Carra cant play 3 games in 2 weeks anymore. Rodgers has hailed his communication skills recently, and i think he`s pretty damn nailed on atm.

    Quick question: Say Gerrard rises the .3 this week and then hits the threshold again, will he rise the first night of the next game week?

    I hope that makes since.

      He`ll have to meet the threshold three more times after GW26 has officially begun.

    Bunn/bego
    Baines ENRIQUE Harte
    Bale Mata Walcott MICHU(vc) Fellaini
    rvp SUAREZ (C)

    option 1: -4 baines to GJohnson (then back again to baines probably for gw27)
    option 2: -8 baines to DAVIES and Fellaini to GERRARD (dgw blitz then -4 hit to swap back or get monreal,zab etc.for gw27)

    Personally, I like the look of this team :
    DAVIES ENRIQUE harte
    GERRARD(vc) MICHU bale mata walcott
    SUAREZ(C) rvp

    I went puncheon lambert clyne ba mata (C) luiz for dgw21 and
    walcott(C) gibbs cazorla demel jaask for the next dgw 22
    Both double gameweek blitz moves not only paid off (gw22 less) but made the game 'fun' again imagining how scared people in my mini league would be looking at my teamsheet
    Remember 'fun'?

    Best 4.0m or below defender to bring in this week?

    a) Wilson (best option imo, but when will he be back. Big problem if not back by GW27)
    b) Pearce (nailed on with a decent GW27 fixture. Means doubling on REA defenders though)
    c) Someone else

    Proposed transfer: Baines & Lambert -> xxx & Suarez(c)

    Szczesny
    Baines, DAVIES, ENRIQUE
    Bale, Mata, Walcott, Fellaini
    Rvp, STURRIDGE, Lambert

    Bunn, Marveaux, Harte, Demel
    Bank 1.1m, 1 freebie

      Wilson has been tweeting that he's close to a return... It would be perfect for you if you got some team news before the deadline...

      As it stands I think that is too much of a risk... I have to suggest someone else... Pearce seems to be the only one that will play... but keep an eye on Whittaker also...

        Yeah, I can probably wait right up to the deadline since my plan for GW27 is Suarez -> Aguero, so I don't mind the Suarez rise tonight.

        Like you say, I need some news on Wilson - if he's back this week, or definitely back in time for next week then I'll probably get him. Otherwise Pearce seems the best bet, and I'll just have to hope REA manage to get a cleanie at home to WIG in GW27.
