With a slew of international friendlies, Fantasy managers are cursed by the usual array of injuries – some genuine, some phantom. This week we’ve already seen a number of withdrawals from international squads, casting some doubt, howver minor, over participation in league matches for the coming weekend.

Daniel Sturridge yesterday confirmed his withdrawal from England’s squad to face Brazil tomorrow evening. The Liverpool striker is suffering from a thigh injury and, although he joined up with the squad, has returned to his club for assessment and treatment prior to Sunday’s Anfield meeting with West Brom. Sturridge has been a top transfer target as we approach Liverpool’s double Gameweek, attracting over 70,000 new owners to this point – more than any other player. Having played to the final minute in the 2-2 draw at City on Sunday, there is obviously confidence in Sturridge’s availability for Sunday’s match; we can only wait on further updates from the club as the week progresses.

Marouane Fellaini is perhaps the next biggest name to be affected. Having suffered a bang to his hip in the dramatic 3-3 draw with Villa on Saturday, the Belgian reportedly missed training with his national side on Monday and has been declared a doubt for their friendly with Slovakia. Again, Fantasy managers won’t be too concerned by these reports just yet. Such is the importance of Fellaini to Everton, it seems likely that the Belgium national team respect the club involved by not taking any risk with such a player for a friendly encounter. Had the match been a qualifier, we may see a very different scenario but, until we hear more from Goodison on the injury, Fellaini is nothing more than a minor doubt for the weekend’s trip to Old Trafford.

The finger injury sustained by Chelsea’s Petr Cech appears to be more of an issue. The Czech stopper has been withdrawn from his national side’s squad for their clash with Turkey with confirmation that he’s suffered a broken little finger. The player brought us this on his latest setback…

“2013 started unfortunately for me. At first it was groin, then calf and now the finger. Hopefully I have had my share of bad luck for the whole year already. I punched the ball and the head of one of Newcastle players at the same time. I thought it was nothing but went for an X-ray just in case. However, it showed there was a fracture.”

The early reports suggest that Cech is already ruled out of the weekend home meeting with Wigan, whilst also casting doubt on Cech’s chances of facing former club, Sparta Prague, in the Europa League next Wednesday…

“It will depend on whether we find a solution where it would not threaten my health and, at the same time, I would be able to perform adequately…I have to be able to cover the shots, push the players away and so on. If I were unable to give 100 per cent, I would not play. With the splint I have now it would not be possible at all.”

Once again, it will likely be Ross Turnbull who deputises for Cech in the Chelsea goal should he be confirmed absent from the Wigan meeting on Saturday.

Across West London, Harry Redknapp is sweating on the fitness of new striker Loic Remy, with the lastest reports suggesting that the Frenchman is facing up to two months on the sidelines. Remy suffered a groin injury in training on Friday and subsequently missed the 0-0 draw with Norwich on Saturday. While Redknapp stated that Remy had suffered a torn groin, he later retracted this and indicated that it was merely a strain. This was later confirmed by assistant boss Joe Jordan. Despite this, a report in the Daily Mail are far from optimistic on Remy’s prognosis, stating that a prolonged spell out is on the cards. Others have followed suit with similar claims.

With Bobby Zamora fighting for match fitness, Redknapp’s options up top are scant: Jamie Mackie is his only fit recognised striker, with Adel Taarabt recently being asked to play a striker’s role. While Taarabt’s start and attacking responsibilities will be assured should Remy face a term of absence, Fantasy managers will perhaps have little confidence in QPR’s attacking potential without their new signing in the starting XI.

Man United’s Phil Jones was a notable withdrawal from England’s U21 international with Sweden tonight. Jones also missed Saturday’s victory at Fulham and, while United have been vague on his situation, Stuart Pearce has confirmed that he has been ruled out of his U21 squad due to a bout of shingles. A report in the Daily Telegraph this morning states that Jones is now a doubt for United’s Champions League tie with Real Madrid next week. His absence against Everton this weekend seems almost certain, then, cutting Sir Alex Ferguson’s rotation options ahead of the big European tie.

Moving away from injuries and illness, it was interesting to find Martin O’Neill discussing his tactical options following the recent acquisition of Danny Graham from Swansea. The Sunderland boss gave Graham his debut from the bench at Reading at the weekend but recent articles have discussed the option of O’Neill fielding both Graham and Steven Fletcher in a 4-4-2. O’Neill certainly seems to be considering such an option…

“We’ll see, we’ll develop something with them – I don’t see it being a problem…Steven Fletcher, although he’s been brilliant as a centre-forward, I think he can drop in and easily play in another position…We’ll see what develops with the two of them playing together.”

That statement indicates that Fletcher could well be deployed in a support striker role, linking the midfield and Graham as the focal point of the attack. That would not only have implications on the role of Stephane Sessegnon, it could also possibly impact on Fletcher’s output from this point on. The former Wolves man has been outstanding in his first season on Wearside, scoring 10 times in the league so far in a side that, earlier in the season, was creating little but scraps in front of goal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anybody taking a calculated risk and going for 3 or less DGW players?
Really struggling to know who I would drop (if I'd had a bad week last week this may be a different story).
    Benteke with WHU is staying.
Aguero, Fellaini and Bale all could go but are also all hitting some kind of form and have decent fixtures.

The only player I have who is even sort of out of form (And a rotation risk too) is RVP and I don't know if I have the cajones for losing him.

Could do but then I'm left with Suarez and Davies only - which doesn't feel enough. I'd be happy if I can find a way to get one of the main Liverpool trio, a Liverpool defender and Hernandez for 4 points. Haven't found it yet though.

I wouldn't have said Aguero is hitting form. I thought he was almost as bad as the rest of City against QPR and against Liverpool, he apparently had one shot and just 3 touches in the box (not 3 shots in the box, 3 TOUCHES).

What you guys reckon are the chances for the following teams grabbing a CL spot for nest season (assuming the Manchester teams finish 1 and 2)? I'll go first:

    Chelsea - 60%
    Spurs - 50% (biased?)
    Everton - 35%
    Arsenal - 35%
    Pool - 20%

I think depth will be an issue for both Pool and Everton. So id say 55:45 between Spurs or arsenal for the fourth with a slight advantage to Spurs. And 75% that Che will get at least 4th.

I'd be shocked if Chelsea manage to drop to 5th (although with Rafa anything is possible).
I still think Arsenal will pip Spurs to 4th by goal difference as their fixtures are tasty and we're going to miss Sandro in the big games. Parker's been rubbish.

    Morning everyone!

Been doing some number crunching and thought I'd share my findings....

I took the top 20 players in each position and calculated the mean and median value and points.

I then worked out what the points per £m spent in each position was and it was actually quite interesting.

    Goalkeepers
    Mean Value - £5.29m
    Median Value - £5.2m
    Mean Points - 70.85
    Median Points - 66.5
    Mean Points per £m - 12.79
    Median Points per £m - 13.39

    Defenders
    Mean Value - £6.00m
    Median Value - £6.00m
    Mean Points - 86.05
    Median Points - 81.50
    Mean Points per £m - 13.58
    Median Points per £m - 14.35

    Midfielders
    Mean Value - £7.90m
    Median Value - £7.75m
    Mean Points - 112.05
    Median Points - 101.00
    Mean Points per £m - 13.03
    Median Points per £m - 14.18

    Strikers
    Mean Value - 8.15
    Median Value - 7.70
    Mean Points - 106.45
    Median Points - 103.00
    Mean Points per £m - 13.38
    Median Points per £m - 13.06

Now what is interesting is that working of median points per £m spent defenders actually offer the greatest bang for buck! The strikers have a mean smaller than the median which demonstrates the RVP factor skewing the numbers, there is a much wider spread of returns.

Also by taking the median value of each position and assuming you need 2 GKs, 5 DFs etc here's how much would be spent on each area.

    GKs - £10.4m
    DFs - £30m
    MFs - £38.75
    ST - £23.1m
    Total - £102.25m

I'm no expert in statistics but would appreciate any people's views - fully appreciate this doesn't take into consideration captain choices, not playing all 15 at once etc etc. Keen to do a bit more detailed work now I've explored the basics.

p.s. Avatar and team linking to follow shortly 🙂

You can do that an easier way by using the Value(season) on the drop down menu on th FPL site...Keep an eye on it...Last week for example the top placesas a squad would have had a score of 67 pre capt choice...very often good scores..Team value at the mo for season.s best value players...85 mill....

Appreciate your comments guys, agree the bare stats need a lot of work to bring into the real FFS world but as a starter for 10 I found it interesting so wanted to share....

Going to look next at a bit more detailed stuff that considerd formations, consistency of players, how to factor in anomolies i.e. RVP and also look at how the performance of positions varies over time

Nice stuff. It is worth remembering that value isn't everything though; if you got a team full of the top value players then you'd have a cheap team of slightly above average scorers.

You need to have some of the top scorers at any price. It's about balance thought. You afford the elite by getting the best value players around them.

But in terms of historical conversion rate, most midfielders have overperformed so far and strikers overperformed. Defenders have overperformed scoring wise as well but there have been less than expected clean sheets. Also much rotation in the main defenders and defenses.

    Reina, anybody?

He's a bit of a clown and all that but he's a double gameweek player you can bench in gameweek 27 without restricting your chances of a full XI.

I have him instead of Johnson/Enrique.

I just thought my bench was not strong enough for next week to justify one of the above.

Bunn is my other keeper and he rotates quite nicely tbh

Thought I'd ask for an initial sounding board on my gw 27 squad:

    Mignolet
    Demel, Wilson, Zabaletta
    Fellaini, Mata, Bale, Walcott
    RVP, Pog

    3.9; Suarez, GJ, Michu, Davies

Tempted to do Suarez and Demel (who might not be nailed on) -> Harte and Aguero (-4)

I'm not over thinking about gw27 yet - think I'll just wait and see. Options at the minute are shipping out Michu (which I don't really wanna do as I've had him all season!) or getting rid of Demel (maybe Wilson?).

Your plan sounds good. I'm doing Suarez -> Aguero. Got 5 DGW players, not sure who I'll lose of GJ/Michu/Sturridge. Sturridge would allow me to field a 3-4-3, which could help points wise.

        Davies, Zabaleta, Rafael (Demel, Harte)
        Mata, Fellaini, Bale, Michu (Kaca)
        Sturridge(c), Remy, RVP

NO FT, 1.7 in bank. Was thinking about taking a hit in order to convert Kaca to Henderson. Any other ideas? It's a bit of a sticky situation because Remy could be ruled out for a long, long time and would have to look for a replacement so another possible hit next GW.

Just fear having not done well against them off late will probably want SAF to play a strong team?

          For sure.

What about Rooney? I remember Fergie saying he has to keep playing to maintain his fitness but then he does tend to rest him.

I think Rooney has more chances of starting compared to RVP.
I fancy Rooney RVP and Chicha to start vs. Madrid.

I don't understand the mania surrounding this double game week.....
It is immediately followed by a blank!
So these teams have 2 games in 2 game weeks....
        Nothing special about that....

So who should i worry about this week?
FYI, i love the classic LAWR league. I make sure i look at yours, Evs and Forca's teams every week. Keeps me on my toes. Plus its so tight...

If you have 5 DGWers (incl. a keeper) your players can have 27 fixtures (instead of 22) over 2 weeks without taking any hits. Factor in your captain choices and this becomes 29!

With good team management it's still a chance to get points from 25/26/27 players over 2 GWs rather than the usual 22

          Transfers and benches.

You can play 28 players in 2 weeks, instead of the normal 22. Of course that takes hits but you get the point. More players in two weeks than in a regular two weeks.

I just think those taking hits + fielding the likes of Demel, Guthrie, Harte etc. could be in for a nasty GW27

But it's those who are planning no hits who are making that choice...If you only have 3dgwers and rely on your bench the following week then na awful lot of people will be playing some real lightweights (unless you have a v good bench)..If you sart with 5 Dgwers then and play 9 the second week you will have one more chance to accrue points bit it will be an extra Sturridge at home rather than 3 Marveaux's and pearce's playing playing,,, and likely failing...

Gentlemen, I'm flying to London for my first PL game live (being Swedish and all), Spurs vs. Newcastle at WHL. Any do's and dont's? Can you go to the pub for beer before noon (considering the match starts 12:45)?

Definitely go to the pub as early as possible! I was in London a couple of months ago at Stamford Bridge (the 2-0 vs Newcastle), it was all good. Just have fun.

Great, thanks! When do they start serving beer then? In Sweden you are not allowed to serve alcohol before noon (or maybe 11 am)....

Re the above post by Jaegerbombing

Current best value(season) squad from FPL site....

        Jaask Mignolet

        O'Brien Bassong Evra Davies Reid

        Puncheon Noble Routlege Fellaini Snodgrass

        Lambert Benteke Fletcher

In the mix....Baines Michu LeFondre(?) Ba DeGuzman etc...

It's amazing the scores that are within those combos most weeks...The difficulty...as with my team...is Capt choices..
