A first win in six, a first clean sheet in eight – West Brom turned up at Anfield and failed to read the double Gameweek script. Steven Gerrard’s missed spot-kick compounded an evening of the unexpected, as Ben Foster’s inspired performance frustrated Liverpool and Fantasy managers alike. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s events…

On the Up

Ben Foster
A simply outstanding display by the Baggies stopper, capped by a stunning save from Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick. This was a first clean sheet in eight for Foster, a first away from home. With fixtures brightening for Steve Clarke’s side, we may yet see Foster build on tonight’s performance and start to attract Fantasy interest.

Gareth McAuley
The opening goal from McAuley, his second strike of the season, underlined his credentials as the luxury item in the West Brom defence – a proposition that has tempted few given their poor record of late. Like Foster, however, tonight’s returns may well earn him attention, particularly with the schedule presenting further opportunities for shut-outs in the coming weeks.

Romelu Lukaku
The big Belgian started the game on the bench as Steve Clarke bolstered his midfield with the return of Youssouff Mulumbu. Shane Long kept his start, then, but was overshadowed by the cameo role played by Lukaku late on. An early warning saw the Chelsea loanee threaten the goal, breaking from inside his own half, only for him to seal the victory with a superb first touch and calm finish just minutes later.

Going Down

Steven Gerrard
It’s harsh on Gerrard given Foster’s outstanding save, both from his second half effort and his penalty. Having said that, such is the competition for places in our midfields, failure to register points at home to Swansea on Sunday will surely see Gerrard suffer significant sales ahead of the Gameweek 27 blank, as the clamour for Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Juan Mata continues to build .

Luis Suarez
Brendan Rodgers decided against risking Daniel Sturridge, assuring us that “he should be okay” for Sunday’s meeting with Swansea. Suarez shifted back to a central attacking role, then, only to put on one of his least effective performances in memory. While Suarez won a rather dubious spot-kick, he contributed little else as the West Brom defence coped admirably with his movement and close control; an eighth booking of the season only compounded the frustration for Suarez’s owners.

The Liverpool Defence
They had look such a strong proposition ahead of home clashes with West Brom and Swansea and yet, following tonight’s setback, Brendan Rodgers’ back four have now conceded six goals in their last three. With a confident Swansea at Anfield on Sunday, suddenly our expectation of returns from the likes of Glen Johnson have taken a dent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Looks fairly standard,

My worries would be Demel, Cameron and Szczesny, in that order. Maybe look at Harte as well as Norwich (Turner, Martin) or QPR (Samba, Onouha) for budget defenders to get in.

no one move looks obvious to me, but I'd def start looking to downgrade 1 keeper and get one more slightly attacking defender

that and figure out the logarithm for when RvP starts loosing game time and make your move before your mates

then follow that instinct and toss Wojciech for fundage

with P5 all you really have is that "Sturridge" spot and D to work with.

Oh my what I have missed. What a game. No CS, penalty miss and Suarez yellow before the end. Hhahahah, unbelievable. Well after several successful double GW's in a row this was bound to happen according law of averages. And I decide to invest big in this one hahahah.

Thanks to Sturridge I didn't watched the game and just saw what happened. This place had to be crazy last night. WOW. Any interesting conversation that I have missed ?

If yr willing to take an 8 pointer then lose gj suarez and ramirez i reckon
get dawson or even harte (he's serious value I reckon @home to wigan next) which will earn you 2mil+

And Guthrie is looks to be out of favour at the moment..
If you are taking hit try to field a very strong XI who has good fixtures over the next few GWs, especially GW29 where there is a potential blank for Chelsea, Everton n Arsenal..

Sturrpocalypse plus 5 hours...we're huddled together in the shelter, seem to have rations so it's ok. Unreal is out on patrol with the Winchester...it's all dark outside, kinda eerily still...we'll survive if we keep our wits about us...prayer circle down at the city center...damn it's cold...

I wold like to offer profoound thanks to G-G-G Granville. My plan last week was to do Bale to Gerrard, Granvilles point about this historically being the week that MAta got benched helped to change my mind, now I only missed out on Mata's 1 for Gerrard(c) so far 0.

After the unexpected defeat to Aston Villa, Liverpool wne ton to win at home to Fulham 4-0, so. Always look on..................

What would be the lineup of united against Madrid. I'm thinking fergie will field almost the same team that played Everton .

Kagawa coming for giggs and carrick for jones is my guess. What do u guys think?

still in the fpl cup and up against a 'non-casua'l player i suspect who is currently 6 points ahead of me
My only differentials are stevie G and davies
All I need is 6 friggin points from those two to progress
gerrard 0 pointer hasd made what seemed to be a cakewalk extremely tight now

What a horrible night of football...

If that penalty is scored and Liverpool see out the game, I'd probably be looking at 35pts from 3 players...

Instead I got 2pts... a 33 point swing, that is heartbreaking...

I really hope Gerrard uses this bad performance as motivation to step up against Swansea... so I have to believe that all is not lost...

Although all of my H2H's this week probably are now.... 🙁

Completely out of the blue, though... how the hell did that happen?!

In hindsight, I would much rather Sturridge played now, would have given them much more attacking verve and direction...

Can't say I was impressed by the attitudes of some on here celebrating Gerrard missing, even when they had Suarez as captain... very sick attitude...

Yeah, it would have got me 6 points and Liverpool would likely have hung on for a CS...I can't believe how poor they were though, Suarez was pants, Gerrard was completely off his game and the rest were just dire.

I only saw the second half but from what I did see I completely agree...

Was not at all confident when the camera panned to Gerrard standing over the ball, you saw him do a nervous swallow, and then the commentator proceeds to tell you that they have missed 5 of the last 6 penalties etc etc...

I'm not too sure, it was just what the commentator's were on about.. was trying not to listen, and trying to avoid thinking about it since I didn't want them to jinx my bloody captain...

One solace is that Swansea have the cup final coming up and they will likely not be taking this game too seriously...at least they won't be prioritising it.

          Good morning DZ.

Well that was a bit of a wash out. Bang goes my 100 point dream.

Almost the best damage limitation I could have hoped for I suppose with Studger (C). Even Gerrard pen would have left me with net -1 v suarez Armbanders. Shirley he will be fit for next week?

In a kind of strawclutchy way, as someone planning to hold Studger long term, I'm pleased how toothless 'Pool were without him.

Gerrard and Demel out next week, just need to decide who for. Will leave it late this time, a lot of known unknowns and unknown unknowns before the next GW. 🙂

or is there any new inclusions like sissokho???

combined score(without anyone selected as captain) of power 5 in the last 3 gamewks are:

35(gmwk24),40(25),42(26 till now) which is reasonably good imo...

nor RDG are good fixtures on paper, but after that they get very tough... I think that this could be a good time to mix it up a bit...

I'm sure Fellaini will still get goals, but so will Sissoko and he is 1.7m cheaper... that swings it for me...

He should have. It would have been a much better tactic. Having Shelvey as the frontman did not work. Suarez was not threatening enough as a result.
